lagoon 55 catamaran 2021

Lagoon launched their first catamaran, the original 55, back in 1987. Fast forward to 2021, and the first new generation Lagoon 55 splashed representing almost 4 decades of development and design evolution from this famous French catamaran manufacturer.

Lagoon celebrated its 6,000th catamaran launch in 2021 since 1987, quite a milestone.

These days, the Lagoon brand is all about maximising comfort and space while maintaining decent performance under sail. On a test sail off Port Ginesta (our home base near Barcelona), we achieved 9.7 knots with the Code 0 up in a moderate breeze of 15 knots on a beam reach (apparent wind angle of 75). Those aren’t the kind of numbers that you’d hit on an Ocean Class from Catana , but still, pretty impressive for such a comfortable, spacious boat.

Photos Credit Nicolas Claris, Lagoon, Katamarans

Looking around this catamaran, they have certainly delivered on the comfort, and we’d say they have delivered on the space too.

The 55 represents a big step up from the 51 with a bigger beam, redesigned aft cockpit and transoms, a full flybridge, saloon skylights and an improved foredeck. Let’s take a look.

Of course, with all of that space comes weight: 27.7 tonnes of it with no kit on.

When the wind heads below 7 knots, your speed will drop away and you will need to motor sail, particularly at tighter angles to the wind. That is your compromise. With a breeze and the Code 0 up, she moves very well.

Living Area

lagoon 55 catamaran 2021

The next generation Lagoon 55 from Bordeaux has some interesting innovations. The sugar-scoops have been stretched aft making access to the boat even easier. The aft platform is flush with the aft cockpit deck, and with no aft beam the whole area opens up into a terrace at anchor.

Nauta Design are responsible for the interior design and overall they have done a great job.

The boat feels like a smaller Sixty 5 rather than a bigger 51, it’s the new generation alright. The L-shaped galley on the starboard side has a bar attached, and the huge sofa will soak up plenty of guests. The saloon table will fit 8-10 people when fully extended.

The overall feel is warm and cosy.

Heading through you arrive in the enormous saloon (27 m² or 290 sq ft) which is linked to the the forward cockpit via a large fully opening front window. Here you have another large sofa area and a deck that is flush with the nets. There is an option for a shade sail on carbon poles.

Helming is done from the flybridge with a rigid bimini that is accessed from the port side deck (there is an option for an additional access to starboard which would make the journey to the trampolines easier). The flybridge has forward and aft sunbathing areas, an outdoor galley / bar area, and forward-facing table and seating.

lagoon 55 catamaran 2021

Visibility is great from the flybridge of course, and all lines come down to the foot of the mast (set further aft in keeping with the other models in this Lagoon generation) and the halyards and sheets are managed using three powerful winches. Given the size of this boat, you will need someone to help when coming into the marina.

The mainsail can be hoisted by a single crew member thanks to the electric winches.

During our test sail off Port Ginesta, we hit 7-8 knots in a 15 knot breeze with full mainsail and jib. Once the 154m² Code 0 was unfurled, we accelerated to almost 10 knots with the wind on the beam. Not bad for a boat weighing over 30 tonnes with all the gear on.

You can expect to sail at around 70% of TWS with the bigger sails flying off the bowsprit unless the wind really dies, and then you will need to motor-sail.

With the 272m² asymmetric spinnaker, you will maximise your speed heading on a broad reach as well. Lagoon are reporting 6 knots in only 7 knots of true wind, 8 knots in 10. You are not going to be breaking any speed records on the Lagoon 55, but the performance is nevertheless impressive for such a spacious boat.

There’s plenty of room for sails on this boat, it makes sense to stock the sail locker up with some big ‘uns.

The living space is enormous in the hulls thanks to the pronounced chimes.

The Lagoon 55 is available with four, five and six-cabin versions. In the four-cabin version , the owner’s cabin (17.5 m² or 188 sq. ft.)  is aft in the starboard hull and fills two-thirds of the hull. The other three cabins each have an en-suite.

The Lagoon 55 (2001) is so different from the original model launched 34 years before, and represents how Lagoon’s design philosophy and DNA has changed in over 3 decades of development.

Performance catamaran enthusiasts may prefer the older model, but Lagoon has already sold more new 55s than the total number of original 55s produced. They know their market. The bottom line is that there is more market demand for this kind of package.

For comfort, space, sailing ability and value for money, this cruising catamaran ticks a lot of boxes.

As always, we will qualify this with “it depends on your options”, but to give you an idea, you will start the conversation at around €1.1m and head up to €1.4-1.5m depending on how you kit the boat out.

2021 Lagoon 55 luxury sailing catamaran revealed in full

Lagoon's latest version of one of its cornerstone models ready for australian deliveries.

The latest-generation Lagoon 55 luxury sailing catamaran has taken to the water, featuring a number of design and styling innovations that make it even more user-friendly.

The 55 name dates back to the first-ever Lagoon ocean cruiser launched in 1984. The catamaran has evolved over time with this, the new generation, featuring a slimline profile dominated by plumb bows and a cantilever coach roof.

Of note, the new Lagoon 55’s mast is set further back than before to give it a much higher aspect ratio – an innovation borrowed from fast, modern racing yachts.

The standing rig can provide a total sail area ranging from 186 square metres with the standard main and self-tacking jib, and up to 266 square metres with the square-topped main and code 0.

The Lagoon 55 can come in three different internal layouts featuring four, five or six cabins, with the six-cabin version using a slightly different saloon layout to provide easier access to the cabins.

Outdoor living space

Living space above decks is prioritised, with a huge aft cockpit space looking over the water, and a smart design to the way people on the Lagoon 55 change levels from the twin swim decks to the cockpit, forward to the bow and up to the flybridge.

The aft section of the Lagoon 55 is dominated by a large, open space that connects the 25-square-metre cockpit terrace, complete with two separate dining or lounge areas and a bar, with the saloon. The looks and lines going forward are enhanced via stanchions integrated into the bulwarks to reduce visual clutter.

One of the innovations for this generation of the Lagoon 55 are large overhead skylights that allow natural light to fill the saloon, as well as deep windows.

The foredeck is another large entertainment space, with a retractable window providing a connection between the large sunken lounge with modular seats and a folding teak table, and the saloon.

The Lagoon 55 comes equipped with a hydraulic swim deck that fills in the space between the hulls to create a single large space. It’s also equipped to house a tender.

The hardtop-equipped flybridge deck includes a helm station that has moved forward and to starboard, with a large lounge space aft. The helm seat provides access from the starboard side, making it easy to swap positions while underway.

Lagoon sailing catamarans are sold in Australia via The Multihull Group . Lagoon 55 pricing is expected to start here from around $2.5 million.

Multihull of the year

Up until now, Lagoon has gotten us used to them launching more conventional new models than this new 55-footer - until the last day of February, we only knew it by its code name, the Lagoon 5MA and its length, between 52 and 55 feet.

Lagoon 55 Vs. Bali 5.4

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the all-new lagoon 55 to the existing mega success of the bali 5.4, multihulls have been growing in popularity for the past years, and there is no sign of catamarans stopping their conquest anytime soon.

Major brands known for their monohull production have now a dedicated line for multihulls. In this article, we compare the all-new Lagoon 55 to the already establish Bali 5.4 that has become a sure bet for the investor looking for crewed charter management catamaran.

The popularity of catamarans can be explained by their stability, manoeuvrability and comfortable and spacious living areas. They are  great for chartering .In case you are unfamiliar about the two brands or the catamaran models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Bali catamarans is part of the Catana Group , which in turn is part of the Fountaine Holding group which one’s majority share is the largest network of yacht charter businesses in the bareboat market (Dream Yacht Charters). In less than 5 years, Bali Catamarans has succeeded in establishing a new style and imposing technical choices in a market which, although expanding and being boosted by fleet replacements (following Hurricane Irma, among others), is one that is highly competitive. The skill of the designer and the mastery of composite construction has allowed for reducing or even eliminating the objections linked to this nacelle architecture (for this type of program), which has facilitated the scale-up of the Bali family to charter and private owners. Catana Group’s Bali range is incredibly dynamic and several evolutions are currently in the pipeline! The launch of the Bali 5.4, however, is a major step forward that will allow the brand to enter the charter fleets at the right time, at the right level, and at an affordable price

Lagoon is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans.  The brand values freedom and lifestyle, resulting in elegant and comfortable yachts. Designed by Nauta Design and Patrick le Quément, The Lagoon 55 represents innovation, freedom, and courage – the fundamentals of the Lagoon brand. Nauta Design followed Lagoon’s brief closely in creating this Interior Design concept. The shipyard’s primary objective was to bring the same level of high-quality lifestyle defined by bright and elegant spaces and a sense of peaceful, harmonious lightness as is found on Lagoon’s larger cats, to this new catamaran. An objective we shared with the builder. Nauta worked closely with Lagoon and with Patrick le Quément to open up vistas and sources of natural light, using horizontal lines to give a sense of continuity with the seascape and the horizon and to free up visual space so that guests can really enjoy the sea, the sky, the sun and the beauty of their surroundings.

The global launch has been held back a bit, but we have been promised to see the first hulls launched and handed over to its new owners in spring 2022.

lagoon55 exterior5

Lagoon 55   Exterior

The Lagoon 55  has a contemporary design with voluminous hulls.

It is the shipyard’s latest model and stands to replace the Lagoon 560. The Lagoon 55 was officially unveiled in early March 2021 and received a huge amount of interest from dealers and buyers alike, with the order availability now opening up. Bearing the signature Lagoon profile – classic, sleek and timeless – this new sailing catamaran reflects a new concept of onboard living and increased connection to the sea.

This boat has no straight line, no flat surface, all lines are stretched, all surfaces are compound. This is done to express strength and quality. Nothing has been left to chance, it is is a boat totally designed in every detail.

The design includes generous spaces allowing guests to find their own private relaxed area in the many different spots onboard. Her multi-function transoms are not just for moving around the boat but also serve as a living space when at anchor, either for cooking outdoors or for direct access to the sea.

A highlight is the transom, which has been designed to be an on-water terrace, equipped with an outdoor galley, that is perfect for socializing. The new concept of access on board and circulation offers a new sensation. The aft skirts are no longer just a space for movement, but a real living space at anchor, for cooking outdoors or simply dreaming at the water’s edge.

The Lagoon 55 provides first-class comfort with a large forward cockpit ideal for sunset aperitifs and a huge flybridge with a dining table, extensive sun pads, and a wet bar.

Docked Bali 5.4 from behind

Bali 5.4   Exterior

The Bali 5.4 is all about lounging space. The decks seem to go on forever, with cushioned surfaces everywhere. Up to 12 vacationers can take in the views on the foredeck, the afterdeck or atop the flybridge. Contrary to the trend of the majority of catamarans of this size, the Bali 5.4 doesn’t offer the traditional cockpit with table, bench seating and lounger, but completely redraws this aft space by merging it with the convertible saloon/gallery (open to the outside with the tilting bay window and side panels). This “revolution” goes against the “cockpit lounge” option chosen by their French or South African competitors by replacing it with a nacelle space and by adding a new living space forward.

With the exception of the comfortable bench seat athwartships, the stern of the boat is more dedicated to the role of an exchange area between inside and outside and for access to the sugarscoops or gangway (when the tender is in the water). The design for moving around the boat unveils new possibilities and allows you to reach the huge forward cockpit directly through a forward door: an unparalleled solution, conquering the usual trampoline, to offer a friendly relaxation/sunbathing/brunch/happy-hour space worthy of a model 10 feet longer!

Considering the extreme optimization and innovative organization of the space on board the 5.4, the flybridge was essential for clearing the technical hardware from the deck and offering a fitting helm station that also serves as a desirable marine terrace (accessible from both sides). The deck layout is simple and efficient with a readable and direct distribution of sail handling maneuvers: the 2 electric winches are obviously essential

interior design features

lagoon55 interior4

Lagoon 55   Interior

The Lagoon 55 has a 360-degree loft-style saloon connected to the cockpit.

As in all of Lagoon’s collaborations, Nauta Design worked jointly with Lagoon to design the interior design of the Lagoon 55. The main objective of the project was to create a high quality of life on board: bright and elegant spaces, as well as a serene and harmonious atmosphere, directly inspired by Lagoon yachts. Nauta design worked  with Patrick le Quément, to offer new perspectives, and to open the interior to natural light sources using horizontal lines, in order to enjoy continuity with the seascape and the horizon. The visual field is freed so that the guests can enjoy the sea, the sky, the sun, and the beauty of the surroundings.

Another stunning feature is the internal overhead windows, which provide a breath-taking vista of star-studded skies. Large windows and two spectacular skylights in the saloon are key features of this new model that further enhance what Lagoon catamarans are famous for spaciousness, comfort, stability, modern design, and plenty of practical solutions on board. There are several layouts available with 3-5 cabin layouts depending on the yacht’s usage. The interiors by Nauta Design  are bathed in an abundance of natural light with a soothing walnut wood finish.

The galley of the Bali 5.4 with elegant design on everything from the windows, sink and stove, to the practical built-in bottle holders

Bali 5.4   Interior

The designers have done an exceptional job of providing for this multitude of guests in only 54ft. Each cabin has a full double berth and ensuite head. The layout plan provides direct access from the outside to the two aft cabins (extra freedom for late nights or early risers!). The other 4 cabins (all equipped with private bathroom and toilet facilities!) are accessible by 2 lateral companionways, on either side of the chart table (which will be better integrated into the hulls on future units to facilitate forward passage) and from the galley.

The individual volumes of our 6 cabin version are only slightly smaller than those of some traditional owner’s versions and meet the primary expectations of the typical client couple: privacy and comfort. A real achievement on a boat of this size! The clean style is effective without being impersonal: the upholstery and the combination of materials create a pleasant and functional atmosphere that lends itself well to personalization through simple decorative contributions and the woodwork is of a high standard.

The two crew cabins are comfortable and practical, and their individual access via deck hatches is coupled with the possibility of entering in bad weather via an internal watertight door: very well thought out!

New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

lagoon 55 catamaran 2021

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

LOA: 16.56m / 54ft 4in Beam: 9.00m / 29ft 6in Draught: 1.55m / 5ft 1in Displacement: 26,500kg / 58,433lb Price: €tbc Builder: www.cata-lagoon.com

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

LOA: 18.21m / 59ft 9in Beam: 9.46m / 31ft 1in Draught: 1.40m / 4ft 7in Displacement: 25,500kg / 56,217lb Price ex VAT: €1,302,900 Builder: www.catamarans-fountaine-pajot.com

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

LOA: 12.67m 41ft 7in Beam: 7.04m 23ft 1in Draught: 1.40m 4ft 7in Displacement: 12,460kg 27,469lb Price ex VAT: €399,000 Builder: www.leopardcatamarans.com

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

LOA: 13.11m / 43ft 0in Beam: 7.50m / 24ft 7in Draught: 1.50m / 4ft 11in Displacement: 9,000kg /19,841lb Price ex VAT: €329,800 Builder: www.neel-trimarans.com

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

Seawind 1260: Lightweight catamaran making waves on both sides of the Atlantic

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Seawind 1370

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

Outremer 55

A contemporary fast cat set up for short-handed world cruising, Outremer’s exciting new 55 launches this winter.

We previewed this VPLP design in our September issue and hope to test it during the spring. Much focus has been placed on weight and stiffness to help increase performance and ensure the boat can sail in the lightest breezes and therefore rarely need engine power.
