Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht

Kimi Raikonnen – the Iceman himself – has long been known as both the most enigmatic and straight-shooting character in Formula 1.

From telling his race engineer mid-race “ Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing ” to justifying why he missed a speech by Pele with “ I was having a shit “, it’s pretty clear the Flying Finn does and says just about whatever he wants. Which is why the footage of Kimi Raikonnen retiring at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix is the furthest thing from surprising.

The retiring Kimi Räikkönen once left the Monaco Grand Prix to drink beers in the hot tub of his private yacht

• Kimi Räikkönen is retiring at the end of the F1 season, 20 years after making his debut.
• Known as the Iceman, he once retired from the Monaco Grand Prix to sit in the hot tub of his yacht.
• Räikkönen was pictured by TV cameras with his shirt off whilst the race was still going on.

F1's most experienced driver in the sport's history is retiring at the end of the season.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen announced Wednesday via Instagram that he was stepping away from the sport he has competed in since 2001.

"This is it. This will be my last season in Formula 1. This is a decision I made last winter. It was not an easy decision but after this season it is time for new things.

"Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time.

"Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi," he said.

The Finnish driver was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

One particular moment that defined the character trait came in 2006 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Driving for McLaren, his heat shield caught fire and he was forced to retire from the race. Instead of returning to his team's garage in the pits, Räikkönen headed for his private yacht which was docked nearby.

As his rivals continued to race, the TV feed cut to Räikkönen sitting in the boat's hot tub with his shirt off and drinking a beer.

Räikkönen is also the last Ferrari driver to win the world championship having beaten Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the driver's standings in 2007.

In his time in F1, Kimi Raikkonen has amassed a fortune driving for teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, and Alfa Romeo. He has made several splurges from his net worth of $250 million, but the most attractive one yet has to be his yacht.

The Finnish driver bought a 33-meter Sunseeker Predator 108 in late 2008. Raikkonen’s ‘new toy,’ reportedly cost him $10 million, can be seen in the harbors of Monaco and Adriatic coastlines.

It has four cabins with bathrooms and a jacuzzi on the deck, and as reported by News24 , the the Iceman designed the interiors of the yacht himself. One of the most famous moments of Kimi’s career in Formula One involves his yacht.

How Kimi Raikkonen earned his boat the name ‘one more toy’ in 2006

Before he bought a second yacht in 2008, he was involved in a famous incident with his first one at the 2006 Monaco GP. Raikkonen was having a fairly average season; his McLaren was accustomed to mechanical issues and reliability the entire season.

But then, at the 2006 Monaco GP, the Finnish driver made a blinding start and passed his rivals to move to P2. Unfortunately, he was hit by mechanical issues once again.

Kimi had had enough of this, so he parked his car at the Saint Devout corner and started walking through the tunnel. Everyone assumed that the driver was going back to his garage. But Raikkonen surprised everyone when he went straight to his yacht.

He joined his friends on the boat and partied his worries away. ” There is Kimi Raikkonen. He has not even got back to his paddock. He has got his shirt off, he’s on his boat which has a splendid name ‘one more toy’. Kimi’s with some of his best mates from Finland who have consumed their own weight in champagne and beer,” said the commentator.

It was reported at the time that he paid about 3.5m euros for a new 22-meter yacht.

12 classic Kimi Raikkonen stories, and a few that you may not know

Kimi Raikkonen will always be remembered in F1 for his racing prowess, and he is equally regarded as one of the series’ best characters.

Raikkonen firmly put himself on the map in Formula 1 with his spell at McLaren, unfortunate to miss out on World Championship glory in 2003 and 2005, before finally achieving that goal in 2007 when he joined Ferrari.

‘The Iceman’ was not just a very fast Formula 1 driver though, he was arguably the last of a dying breed, a driver who did not care for the politics, PR or media attention, which made him an iconic character who the fans connected with.

When he retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2021, Raikkonen had called time on something which he had considered just a ‘hobby’ for several years already, heading home to spend more time with his family, the days of wild parties now behind him.

Raikkonen left Formula 1 with a who’s who of hilarious classic moments and tales to remember his career by, so let’s indulge in the best of them…

How did he get into Jenson Button’s living room?

Recounting a past Kimi tale, 2009 World Champion Button explained that while Kimi did not have much to say to him in the paddock, “when the sun went down, things changed”.

“The only story I can really remember with Kimi, because most of them are a blur, we were out until like 3am in London and I had a house at that point,” Button told Sky Sports F1 in 2021.

“And I was like ‘I’m tired, I’m out of here’. Got in the cab, get home, walk in my house, and Kimi is sat in my living room, alone, I have no idea how he got there.”

We all know that Kimi loves to have a good time away from the race track, and that was no different back in 2018 as he attended the FIA’s post-season Prize Giving Gala.

In what was one of his final acts representing Ferrari, Raikkonen certainly looked the part in his black suit and bowtie, but it was clear as he made his way out onto the stage alongside Sebastian Vettel that he had downed a few drinks behind the curtains.

Still to this day we haven’t seen Kimi hosting one of these galas, which quite honestly is a travesty. It could become a highlight of the year!

‘I was having a sh*t’ grid walk comment

Back at the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix, icons of two different sports met. Ahead of what was Michael Schumacher’s final Formula 1 race at that stage, he was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Brazilian footballing legend Pele.

Almost all the drivers were present for the ceremony, we say almost because one was missing, Kimi of course.

As part of Martin Brundle’s gridwalk , he would point out to ‘The Iceman’ that he had missed Pele’s presentation, Kimi bluntly saying his absence was due to the fact that he was ‘having a sh*t’. The perils of Kimi and live TV there folks!

It is amazing how a simple line from Kimi can turn into a merchandise opportunity and something which stuck with him for the rest of his career, but this is exactly what happened after his outburst in 2012.

Leading the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the Lotus, Kimi’s race engineer was informing him of Fernando Alonso behind and that he would keep him updated on the Ferrari driver’s pace. Kimi didn’t like the sound of that.

“Just leave me alone, I know what to do,” he said in a stern reply over the radio. Turned into a printed T-shirt on the F1 store, Kimi’s final team, Alfa Romeo, but their own twist on the line at the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, Kimi’s last race.

Written on Raikkonen’s Alfa Romeo C41 was “Dear Kimi, we will leave you alone now”.

As Ferrari were pushing Kimi in his Ferrari out onto the grid in Baku in 2017, there were a few very important pieces of equipment missing.

The minor one was that he didn’t have his gloves to cover his hands when holding the steering wheel. The other things that was missing…the steering wheel!

While not funny for Kimi at the time, it certainly was for the viewer as he yelled over the radio for someone to bring him his gloves and steering wheel, which fortunately for Kimi, soon arrived.

Reliability problems were often a frustration for Raikkonen at McLaren, one of those arriving at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, a fiery heat shield and subsequent engine damage forcing him to come to a stop at Portier.

Back to the media area and McLaren garage for a debrief then? Well actually Kimi had different plans.

He would instead go for a wander over to his private yacht which was waiting in the harbour, Kimi enjoying the rest of the Monaco Grand Prix from very comfortable surroundings as he chilled out with his pals.

Speaking of chilled, it was a hot Sunday in Malaysia for the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix, though a torrential downpour would bring out the red flags as the race was suspended.

Kimi then headed over to check out what the Ferrari refrigerator had to offer. Of course, the athletes that these Formula 1 drivers are, Kimi was going to go for the healthy option, right? Wrong.

Instead, Kimi was seen tucking into a chocolate-coated ice cream and can of Coke. The perfect way to cool down if you ask us!

Kimi and the drinks saga

Kimi got the drink on that day with his can of coke, but sadly he has not always been able to have the drink. Let us explain.

It was back at the 2018 Hungarian GP where one of the most popular viral Formula 1 clips in recent seasons arrived, as Kimi and his Ferrari race engineer got lost in translation regarding his disconnected drinks pipe. “No, no, Kimi, no, you will not have the drink,” has since been added to the list of iconic Kimi-related lines.

Kimi would make his disgruntlement quite clear back in the Ferrari garage!

The dodgy drinks bottled returned to haunt Raikkonen again at the 2021 Monaco GP, this time driving for Alfa Romeo, and once more during practice at the Turkish GP later that season.

Now that Formula 1 is behind him, we hope that Kimi can finally have the drink!

Kimi gets revenge after his hands are dyed blue

Former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley, who built up a friendship with Kimi during their time at the team, spoke of how a McLaren tradition left Kimi with blue hands , and himself with a dodgy haircut.

For anyone who was about to leave McLaren, on the final day they would be covered with all sorts of “crap” in the view of the pit lane, while the team also had an intense blue dye in their armoury, so Kimi was not going to be an exception as he prepared to move to Ferrari.

Kimi was determined to avoid his fate, but when he went to the bathroom at the 2006 Brazilian GP, he didn’t miss only the Pele-Schumacher ceremony, but also Priestley filling his gloves with this blue powder, so after a demanding, sweaty race at Interlagos, Kimi found himself with blue hands!

Kimi got his revenge though when Priestley was one of the guests at his Lapland home for the yearly Finland “piss-up”.

While Priestley was in bed, Kimi and his mate smashed the door off its hinges, held Priestley down and “he gets a set of clippers and buzzes like a reverse mohican down the middle of my long shoulder-length hair!

“And then, worse than that, he cuts the plug off the end of the clippers and throws it out a window into like a five-foot snowdrift!

“That was day one of a week, so there was nothing I could do apart from a massive combover to hide it for the rest of the week!”

Note to self, never prank Kimi, ever!

The 16 days of fun and missed Lotus test

Sticking with wild, boozy stories, after finishing P2 in Bahrain back in 2012 from P11 on the grid, Kimi and his mate, ice hockey player Kimmo ‘Piki’ Pikkarainen, were at a party hosted by the Prince of Bahrain which kicked-off 16 crazy days!

Finding himself in a swimming pool with his clothes on, attempting to imitate Maradona, a trip to Helsinki for the May 1st celebrations and twisting his ankle, which caused him to miss a Lotus test, were all part of the antics. Kimi had at one stage been using a baggage trolley to move around his house while he recovered from the injury.

Back to Formula 1 business it was though as the Spanish Grand Prix came around, where he crossed the line P3 in the Lotus to make it back-to-back podium finishes.

Lost at Interlagos

As Kimi slid off at Juncao on a damp circuit back at the 2012 Brazilian GP, he took to the old track which he believed he could use to return to the current one, but instead, all he met was a gate to ensure that his plan was ruined.

A very smooth 180-degrees spin quickly got Kimi facing the right way again as he bolted for the active part of the track, cutting over the grass to rejoin proceedings. He still managed to score a point!

Repairing the Ferrari toilet

As well as being very good at driving a Formula 1 car, Kimi also was a pretty decent mechanic, even if he didn’t finish his course.

That came in handy one day in 2017 when the toilet on the Ferrari bus was not working correctly in Barcelona, where pre-season testing was taking place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Handed the necessary tools, Kimi found that the system was similar to the one on his boat, and quickly got the Ferrari toilet back in full working order.

When your car breaks down and you have to retire from an F1 race, you're not going to be best pleased. You'll need to cool off.

Kimi Raikkonen once took that very literally, when he responded to an engine failure at the Monaco Grand Prix by making a beeline for his yacht to kick back and watch the rest of the race.

The heat shield had exploded on his McLaren at the Portier corner and his race was over, but fortunately his yacht full of his friends was nearby.

So he got out of his car and, still wearing his full race suit and helmet, strolled onto the vessel seemingly without a care in the world and got into his hot tub.

After all, why go back to the pits just to be asked a load of questions by your team and the media when you can grab a beer and relax with your friends?

That hilarious moment was one of many the Finn has provided over the course of his long career in F1, spanning 20 years.

The pressure was on right from the start. When he was announced as a driver for Sauber in 2001, many including some of the sport's top officials at the FIA were concerned about his inexperience.

Raikkonen had only actually taken part in 23 car races and was suddenly being thrust behind the wheel of an F1 car. It made a lot of people nervous, but not the man himself.

He was so laid back about it that he came close to missing the start of his debut race after deciding to have a nap.

A flustered team engineer found him dozing just 30 minutes before the Australian Grand Prix, and he decided it was probably the right time to take his seat and race for the first time in F1.

Starting 13th on the grid after a respectable qualifying, he raced through the pack to sixth and scored his first championship point. Clearly his nap hadn't in any way affected his preparation, nor had the noticeably high level of media attention.

In fact, he never seemed to be rattled by anything. He was quickly dubbed the 'Iceman' during his early years in the sport, perhaps in part because of his unflappable personality but also down to his dry, monotonous public persona and cold treatment of the media.

But it is that dry wit which has produced so many memorable moments and quotable soundbites over the years.

Raikkonen's place in the F1 history books is secure as a world champion with Ferrari in 2007 and the winner of 21 Grands Prix, though fans will remember him more for having one of the most unique personalities the sport has ever seen.

Yachts routinely steal the show during the F1 grand prix weekend.

The yachts docking in the harbour for the F1 Monaco Grand Prix have turned heads - with a couple particularly impressing.

A yacht named Seven Sins caused a commotion because there is a Bugatti Chiron onboard.

The Seven Sins can be chartered for a week at a much more reasonable $300,000 but that doesn’t come with the Bugatti! 

The car itself is worth around £2.5m and, now, there is one in full view in Monaco harbour during the F1.

A yacht named Evrima, owned by Ritz-Carlton, is being used by Lewis Hamilton , George Russell and Toto Wolff as part of their partnership with Mercedes .

Evrima is more of a floating luxury hotel than a boat.

Guests have voyaged around France before docking in Monaco for the coolest weekend of the year.

Rooms cost $10,000 to $100,000 for holidaymakers at this time of year.

If you want to charter Evrima, it will set you back $2.2m for a week.

It boasts 149 rooms, a private terrace for each suite, an infinity pool and even an onboard therapist.

It has direct access to the seawater, and watersports, from its deck.

A superyacht named Faith has also docked in Monaco for the grand prix and it is known to some of F1's richest people.

The $200m yacht was previously owned by Lawrence Stroll, the current Aston Martin owner.

Stroll sold it to the billionaire father of former F1 driver Nicholas Latifi.

Faith has a helipad onboard plus a gym and a theatre.

And it's yours to rent for one week for a mere $1.5m...

A yacht named Lionheart is also turning heads in Monaco this year.

It was formerly owned by businessman Philip Green, and is valued at $150m.

Most famously, when Kimi Raikkonen was forced to retire early from the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, rather than go back to his team garage he instead walked straight to the harbour to find his yacht.

Moments later, he was spotted lounging in the sun onboard his private yacht with his friends - with the F1 race going on without him.
