Boat Review: Viking 65 Convertible

  • By By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: October 12, 2001

Viking Yachts has, in its three newest models, embarked on a journey into truly advanced technology, design and construction. Each new model employs refinements gleaned from the last model. So to say that each new boat Viking builds is the best it’s ever built is no exaggeration. The company’s goal is perfection, and although there’s never been a perfect boat, Viking gets a little closer with each new model. The 65’s entire hull is end-grain balsa composite. Even the stringers are now foam filled except under the engines. Amazingly, the new 65’s hull weighs a scant 1,000 pounds heavier than the Viking 58s. Styling has changed a bit. You’ll see more crown on the foredeck and flybridge, fewer sharp corners and more soft, radius turns. Frameless windows even have a crown in them to soften the lines.

Performance Fore and aft vision for the helmsman is the best you’ll find anywhere on this size boat, thanks to the placement of the helm and the notched cutout in the flybridge coaming forward. The wheel turns like silk; you’ll experience an immediate response, and small, incremental course changes can be accomplished remarkably quickly. However, turn the wheel hard over and the 65 banks gently, scribing a large arc that doesn’t decrease your speed. Backing down at 6.5 knots in total control, I couldn’t get any water at all to enter the cockpit through the scuppers, tuna door or over the cap rail. Looking at the scupper from the inside, I have no doubt that any water that might gather in the cockpit wouldn’t be there for very long. To make a boat this size go fast takes impressive power. Our test boat packed twin 16-cylinder, 2000 series DDC/MTUs into the engine compartment. Each engine produces 1,800 hp at the peak of the torque curve. Top speed according to two GPS units proved an impressive 39 knots. But a far more economical 34-knot cruising speed seemed very comfortable while still cooking right along. Looking from alongside, the 65 appears to run with a very modest bow inclination. But as with most high-speed large convertibles, there’s actually a fair bit of hull lifting out of the water. At cruising speed, the ocean meets the hull right about amidships.

Fishability Needless to say, the large cockpit of any 65-footer provides more than enough room for multiple anglers to fish side by side without crowding. But the first impression of the Viking 65’s cockpit inspires minimalist awe. It’s so clean it borders on stark. Gaffs, mops and the like stow efficiently under the side walkways, as do the hose and shore power cable. Viking has molded in a ledge or step along the forward edge of the cockpit where cleaning supplies, fish, drinks, bait and anything else can be stored unobtrusively. An additional step up to the salon door contains a refrigerated drink cooler. The cabinetry along the salon bulkhead also contains the obligatory rigging station, sink, tackle drawers, etc. After about an hour’s cruise out to the tuna grounds, I discovered another terrific aspect of the 65’s cockpit. Viking has tapered the back ends of the cabin sides toward the center of the boat, effectively channeling air into the cockpit. This totally eliminates any “station-wagon” effect from the exhaust, leaving not a speck of spray to besmirch the salon’s cockpit window. All those anglers who regularly sit atop the cockpit cabinetry underway will particularly appreciate it. There must have been a hundred boats out in one fairly small area fishing for giant bluefin tuna. During our day of fishing, we raised, caught and released a 100-pounder. As far as I could see (or hear on the radio), we were the only boat to catch a fish that day. That certainly speaks well for our boat’s fish-raising ability. Oh, and reaching over the gunwale to remove the hook and revive the bluefin proved a comfortable and well-balanced reach. While pulling tuna spreader rigs at a 3- to 4-knot trolling speed, I detected absolutely no discernable wake turbulence. The spreader bars generated far more white water than the boat did. At 8 knots the prop wash was solid through the first wave aft, but still I saw no chine turbulence. I know there was a time when hardcore anglers swore that no boat over 40 feet long could fish effectively. They obviously never fished a Viking 65. It doesn’t matter what maneuvers you perform to catch a fish; this boat will back, spin and run responsively enough to match even the fastest big game. Altogether, I can think of only one change I’d ask the factory to make if I were buying a new 65. Despite the exceptionally good nonskid on the bow, there’s a space between the cabin sides and the foredeck where, if you’re walking forward to anchor, there isn’t adequate handhold security. Sure, adding a handrail may disrupt the lines slightly, but I’d rather do that than fall overboard.

Flybridge Air-conditioning evaporators have been moved from the bridge, where most builders put them, to down inside the boat. This freed up a ton of space for additional rod storage on the flybridge. A big refrigerated drink box assures you’ll only need to make one beverage trip per day to your belowdecks storage. I like several noteworthy features about this flybridge. First, you could get everyone aboard seated topside for evening harbor cruises and still not be crowded. Second, the helm has plenty of room behind it to move across the bridge to the guest helm seat. Third, a Plexiglas insert in the forward flybridge coaming affords the helmsman a wonderfully clear view of the bow for anchoring and docking.

Interior The Viking 65 comes in two accommodation layouts. A three-cabin arrangement provides a study in lieu of crew’s quarters aft for those who want to live aboard or take extended trips without sacrificing shore-side business. A four-cabin layout features two cabins with large beds and two others with over/under bunks. Both layouts provide a private head for each cabin. All the A/C comes out behind the window valances in the salon so you have no ugly vents in the overhead. Even the air intakes have been hidden in the stairwell below. Viking has finished the 65 impeccably with gloss-finished teak throughout. At first the galley appears to be bare counter space, but you’ll find hidden drawers containing the refrigerators and freezers, a three-burner electric stove, microwave, dishwasher and all the other appliances.

Engine Room The Viking 65 not only provides ample width through the cockpit access hatch but full standing headroom in the compartment. The extra cabin between the engine room and the master stateroom provides a healthy noise buffer. As in the cockpit, the word stark comes to mind in the engine room. Systems that need frequent maintenance are positioned conveniently, as are all switches. Additionally, you’ll find plenty of storage space for tools and spares.

ABOUT THE 65 Convertible

The Viking 65 Convertible is a 65-foot open bridge sportfishing yacht with a flybridge that was produced by New Jersey-based Viking Yachts between 2000 and 2005. SPECIFICATIONS

  • Beam 18' 9"
  • Draft 5' 6"
  • Displacement 96,000 lbs.
  • Engine Manufacturer MTU
  • Fuel Capacity 2,000 gallons

This yacht can be fitted with a custom-made tuna tower from Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers for elevated tuna-spotting and piloting, though even without this addition owner-operators can benefit from a raised helm station on the 65C’s open flybridge. This water-proofed fiberglass helm station benefits from a pair of leather helm chairs, power steering, bow thruster controls and instrumentation provided by Atlantic Marine Electronics. There is also room up here for a large drink cooler, an L-shaped forward sofa with views out across the bow and a side chaise-longue, all covered by a flat, fiberglass top with a removable plexiglass screen available to protect from spray.

Hardcore fishermen will undoubtedly love this vessel’s 179-square foot aft-cockpit, from where many a tournament winner has hauled in record-breaking marlin. The cockpit hosts a transom tuna door, rod storage, flush rod holders, a bait-prep console with a freezer, tackle storage units, Glendinning Cablemasters and a floor plate for a fighting chair or rocket launcher. The cockpit is lined in non-slip and easy to clean fiberglass with both fresh and raw-water hoses, and benefits from plenty of powder-coated grabrails to help keep you upright at the vital moments.

While exterior spaces on the Viking 65C are all about fishing practicality, when you step indoors you will find that the emphasis is placed squarely on luxury, comfort and style. A salon decked out in high-gloss, hand-crafted teak and plush carpeting features a U-shaped leather sofa surrounding a coffee table to port, with plenty of cabinet space to starboard. Moving slightly forward you will find a walk-in galley with granite worktops, a three-zone hob, under-counter fridge-freezer units and a combination oven. There is also a U-shaped dining sofa across from the kitchen, hugging a faux-marble-topped dining table where guests can enjoy sophisticated evening meals while gazing out of panoramic side windows.

Lower deck spaces offer comfortable retreats for up to six overnight guests across an en-suite bunk berth to starboard, an en-suite double stateroom to the bow, and an en-suite amidship owner’s stateroom to port. The owner’s room features a king-sized bed, bedside cabinets, maple-lined hanging closets and a private lounge area with a loveseat.

Central to the Viking 65C’s appeal are top speeds that can keep up with the feistiest bluefin tunas in the ocean, and thanks to a pair of MTU 16V 1800MHP diesel engines you can expect full-throttle speeds of 39 knots. At a more economical 34-knot cruise you will find that this is one of the most balanced and nimble fishing yachts on the market, with the sort of agility you would expect from a much smaller boat. A fuel capacity of 2,000 gallons, meanwhile, ensures that you can traverse the seas far and wide in search of tuna-rich waters with plenty of spare capacity left in the tank.

When you step inside the cockpit of the 65 Viking "Engage", you quickly realize the level of vessel you are aboard. The cockpit is huge with a raised mezzanine seating area and observation deck overlooking the fighting chair and tournament rigged cockpit. There is engine room access from the center line forward hatch, salon access to stbd through an electric sliding door and flybridge access from the stbd side ladder. For shade and sun protection the cockpit has a custom made aluminum frame sun shade.

Entering the salon you get a great feeling of space thanks to her wide beam. There is a U shaped sofa to port with storage beneath and a large ottoman also with great storage beneath. Across the salon, "Engage" has a custom wine chiller added.  Unlike most Vikings of her vintage, the interior high gloss teak wood is in excellent shape. Her color tones are neutral with a great deal of natural light from the large salon windows.

One small step up from the salon is the galley and dinette level.  The galley is to port and features everything a shipboard gourmet would require for dinners aboard.  She has a full-sized refrigerator freezer, great counter space, ample storage and a walk-in pantry!  The U-shaped dinette is right across the galley to stbd. She has a high gloss teak dining table with a plastic protective cover to save the wear and tear.  Above the dinette on the fwd bulkhead is a large flat screen TV.

At the top of the staircase leading down to the lower accommodations there is the walk-in pantry to port and a walk-in laundry room to starboard.

At the base of the stairwell, we have the first of three heads immediately to stbd.  There is both hallway day head access and stbd guest bunk room access. Just forward of the head is the bunk bed guest stateroom. This guest room has private climate controls and a high gloss teak hanging locker.

Across the hallway to port is the master stateroom. It is certainly worthy of the description as an owner's suite.  In addition to the island king size berth, it features an en-suite head and a sunken private lounge. The versatile lounge has a fixed desk, large closet, a sofa, bookshelf and flat screen TV.

In the forepeak of "ENGAGE", is the third and final VIP stateroom.  The bunk arrangement has a lower port side berth and an elevated stbd side berth. Both berths have storage beneath. Additional features include a cedar lined hanging locker, private climate controls, high gloss teak woodwork, a flat screen TV and natural light provided by an overhead hatch.

Back up in the cockpit, the stbd ladder will take us up to the large flybridge. Flybridge highlights include:

  • STIDD helm and companion chair
  • Aft bridge rail with rod holders
  • Large bench seat to stbd
  • L shaped seating in front of the helm
  • Deep refrigerated drink box - fwd of helm
  • Deep freezer - fwd of helm
  • Air-conditioned fly bridge (no isinglass enclosure presently)
  • Updated Furuno Chart Plotter (other electronics are original, dated or non-operational)

Engine room access is easy through the centerline cockpit door and hatch. In 2023, both MTU main engines were rebuilt with sea trials and testing completed summer of 23'; Details and paperwork can be supplied. She has a single ONAN 17 KW gen set to port.  A second smaller back up generator was removed at some point in the past.  There is room to add a second generator if anyone ever wanted to. This stateroom features split bunk beds and includes an en suite head and shower positioned strategically to the starboard aft. Here’s a detailed look at these features:

  • Split Bunk Beds : Located in the bow, this stateroom utilizes split bunk beds to efficiently use the V-shaped space. The upper and lower bunks are arranged perpendicular to each other, with the lower bunk running along the hull and the upper bunk mounted across it. This configuration not only optimizes sleeping areas but also provides individual space for occupants. The bunks are outfitted with comfortable mattresses, individual reading lights, and storage compartments or drawers underneath for personal items.
  • Interior Design and Comfort : The stateroom is finished with high-quality materials, featuring wood paneling, plush carpeting, and soft lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Port holes or a hatch in the bow provide natural light and ventilation, enhancing the comfort of the room.
  • Storage Solutions : Despite the limited space, the design usually includes clever storage solutions such as cabinets, shelves, and hanging lockers, allowing guests to store clothing and other belongings efficiently.
  • En Suite Head and Shower : The en suite facilities located starboard aft of the stateroom offer convenience and privacy. These facilities are designed with durable, moisture-resistant materials to withstand the marine environment.
  • Accessibility and Privacy : The stateroom has a door that ensures privacy for its occupants and easy access to the rest of the yacht. The en suite head and shower are also privately accessible from within the stateroom, which is particularly appreciated during longer voyages or when the yacht hosts multiple guests.

The design ensures stability and comfort, as mid-ship positioning helps in minimizing motion felt from the sea, which is particularly beneficial during rough conditions.
  • Interior Design and Features : The room is designed with practicality and durability in mind, incorporating marine-grade materials that withstand the humid, salty marine environment. The bunks come with comfortable mattresses, individual reading lights, and storage options such as under-bunk drawers or cabinets and overhead compartments. Soft linings and wood paneling often decorate the interiors, providing a cozy atmosphere.
  • En Suite Head : The en suite head is compact but well-equipped, featuring a marine toilet, a washbasin, and a mirror. A shower is included within the same space. The materials used are easy to clean and resistant to water, ensuring longevity and hygiene.
  • Dual Access : One of the key features of this bunk room’s en suite head is its dual access. One door provides private access from within the bunk room, and another door opens to the common areas of the yacht, such as the hallway. This dual-access setup allows the head to serve as both a private bathroom for those staying in the bunk room and a day head for other guests and crew on board, enhancing its utility.
  • Ventilation and Lighting : Good ventilation is provided by small portholes or vents, essential in maintaining air quality in smaller spaces. Adequate lighting is ensured through overhead LED lights, which are energy-efficient and provide clear illumination.
