Tour The Black Swan , the World’s Most Elegant Superyacht

As the name suggests, superyachts are meant to garner attention . From Zaha Hadid’s stunningly crafted ships to vessels featuring waterfalls , these massive floating crafts are becoming ever more exquisite in design. And the latest concept superyacht, by designer Timur Bozca, is no exception. Dubbed The Black Swan for its black exterior and graceful aesthetic, the striking structure is proof of the power of simplicity. According to Bozca, who splits time between offices in Istanbul, Milan, and London, the superyacht was crafted by connecting “simple lines together with dramatic angles and curves.”

“Using the powerful image of an arrow as my inspiration, I tried to create an aerodynamic exterior that would give the yacht a distinctive look, while also improving the efficiency of the craft in the water,” said Bozca in a statement. The yacht will include four engines that can generate 23,172 horsepower, hitting a top speed of 32 m.p.h. Made from aluminium and steel, the yacht features a stunning pool that funnels toward the stern and seems to disappear into the ocean. The Black Swan also includes a sundeck, balconies that are hidden from view, and a rooftop helipad.

The superyacht will be able to accommodate up to 12 guests across a master suite and six guest suites. The yacht is still in its initial design stage, but if built as shown, it would cost upwards of ten million dollars.

The storm-related sinking on Monday, August 20, 2024, off the northern coast of Sicily of the British-flagged superyacht the Bayesian has been called a “black swan” event. What does that term mean, and why is it being used now given that oceanic storms are common?

The term was coined by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh who, in 1697, was surprised to find darkly plumed swans in Australia. At the time, Europeans thought all swans were white. Originally signifying any startling statistical improbability , Vlamingh’s term took on darker meaning when, in 1921, economist Nassim Nicholas Taleb used it in reference to unlikely and unanticipated financial calamities. The meaning of “black swan” continued to generalize, and today it’s being used in reference to the Bayesian tragedy. According to the New York Times and the Independent , twenty-two people were onboard the superyacht when it sank. Twelve were crew members. The remaining were celebrating a recent court victory of British tech mogul Mike Lynch, who had been accused of fraud when he sold his company to Hewlett Packard for $11 billion.

Fifteen people — including a mother and her one-year-old baby — survived by swimming to a raft. The body of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas was found early in the search for survivors. Since then, CNN reports that the bodies of five of the following six people have been found: Mike Lynch; Lynch’s daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; Lynch’s lawyer Chris Morvillo; and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. No names other than that of Thomas have been released.

While no official pronouncement about cause has been made, media are widely reporting that the Bayesian’s “black swan” event seems likely to have been a waterspout. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), waterspouts are ocean- or lake-based tornadoes that can originate either in storm clouds, in which case they descend to the water, or in the water, in which case they ascend to the clouds. Indeed, the New York Times has reported that a few early morning fishermen saw a waterspout over the yacht. Even so, no certainty is at hand. According to the Times , speculations include the possibility that lightning from the storm struck the yacht’s tall aluminum mast and caused a catastrophic shock that defeated electrical systems and sank the boat. Regardless of how the storm sank the ship, CNN has reported that a villa owner on shore reviewed CCTV security footage from his home and said that it took fewer than 60 seconds for the ship go to down.

Tornadoes aren’t unusual — certainly not in the United States, which has more than any other country. (NOAA pegs the number of reported tornadoes in the United States in 2022 at 1,329. Most occurred in “tornado alley” or, more specifically, all or parts of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, North Dakota, Montana, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and New York.) Tornadoes and waterspouts may not be as common elsewhere in the world, but they’re not unusual in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Quoting AtmosphericG2 , a company that provides historical and forecast weather data to traders, Bloomberg.com reports that about 100 tornadoes a year strike Italy. Seventy percent are waterspouts.

Given that tornadoes and waterspouts are not startling statistical improbabilities for Italy, why would a waterspout sinking a superyacht off the shore of Sicily be considered a “black swan?”

Granted, it’s a catchy term for a tornado forming without warning immediately over a superyacht carrying principal players from a lawsuit only recently in the news. “Black swan” sounds about right — but only if the waterspout formed almost miraculously over the boat, did its deadly business with astonishing speed, and disappeared. We may eventually learn that that’s what happened.

Meanwhile, the storm pattern over Italy continues. MSN.com is reporting that storm alerts are in place in “Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria and part of Sicily.”

Black Swan underwent a major refit in 2000/2002, where most of the bottom planking was renewed and the whole deck structure carefully reconditioned. She received a completely new set of spars and rigging, and the two original engines were rebuilt, as well as all technical, electric and plumbing equipment. She underwent her latest refit in 2018.

The Black Swan is the ideal way to experience a lovely classic sailboat and a fantastic yacht for an exotic, romantic sailing vacation. With six professional crew, she can cater to your every whim and luxury.

Now that the refit is complete, BLACK SWAN comfortably accommodates up to 10 charter guests. The owner's master cabin has a large double bed to port and a settee to starboard with its en-suite shower/toilets and two washbasins.

The guest's accommodation is made up of five cabins offering various alternatives for berth organization. Two guest cabins are situated forward of the saloon and have with upper and lower berths. Aft, there are two additional guest cabins with large beds plus an extra Pullman berth. All guest cabins have en-suite showers and toilets.

Description

The Black Swan is a stretched version of the White Swan for Dr. Carcereri of Verona who wanted good headroom in a small traditional gaff cutter. In fact she has just over 6' in the galley area and an accommodation that can be altered to suit your own requirements. She has room for a small inboard diesel engine or as an alternative, an outboard well could be incorporated. There is plenty of room for stowage and the centreboard case has been kept as low as possible by keeping the centreboard pivot outside the boat and through the keel. The case is only 8" above the sole height. Construction is based upon pre shaped ply frames and fore and aft girders which form the bunk/cockpit fronts. The hull panel shapes are given on the drawing so that the planking goes on using the stitch and glue method. This keeps construction costs and time down to a minimum and requires only basic skills. The plans also show the details/moulds for strip planking the hull.

Westport Motor Yacht Black Swan Sold

The 34.14 metre motor yacht Black Swan , listed for sale by Bob Cury at RJC Yacht Sales , has been sold with the buyer introduced by Raymond Young in an in-house deal. 

Built in GRP by US yard Westport with naval architecture by Jack Sarin , Black Swan was delivered in 2013 as the most highly customised Westport 112 model ever built. 

Accommodation is below decks in four cabins consisting of a master suite with a king sized bed and an en suite bathroom with a his and hers bath, marble fittings and mosaic accents. The VIP suite has a queen sized bed and there is a second double with a queen sized bed plus a twin cabin, all with full en suite bathroom facilities.

Her stylish, ultra-modern interior features sapele mahogany throughout along with many custom pieces including the sapele mahogany dining and cocktail tables in the main saloon, both of which feature inlaid back lit glass insets and stainless steel fittings. The lounge and dining area have custom marble flooring with carpeted inlays and there are granite counter tops on all of the buffets and entertainment centres. An additional detail is the recessed overheads throughout the yacht including a full skylight in the galley.

Outdoors, the spacious flybridge comes with teak decks, custom raised seating, a full wet bar, barbecue grill, a Jacuzzi hot tub along with a 19’ tender. Powered by 2,000hp MTU engines, she cruises comfortably at 20 knots with a 26 knot top speed. A 5,500 gallon fuel tank gives her an extended range of 2,500 nautical miles.

Black Swan was asking $10,800,000 and will be available for charter with RJC Yachts.
