Cure 55 first look: Ultimate performance catamaran?

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 22, 2024

The new Cure 55 from Cure Marine has been announced and this incredibly light catamaran will likely deliver some seriously impressive performance

cure 55 catamaran

Product Overview

The Cure 55 extremely lightweight Australian model is intended as the ultimate performance cruising multihull, combining spacious and well appointed accommodation with the ability to cross oceans at speed, even when sailing double-handed or even solo.

It’s a full carbon fibre build, including hulls, longeron, boards and rudders. That equates to an incredibly light predicted displacement of only 9.5 tonnes – which is over two tonnes lighter than the ORC 57, arguably the most performance oriented production cat at the moment. The hulls look very slender, while a carbon Hall Spars mast and North 3Di sails are standard equipment.

A big 3kW solar array, allied to a 13kW battery bank should give near complete electrical autonomy, though the twin 57hp Yanmar engines are fitted with ultra-high output alternators, which means the weight and complexity of a diesel generator is not required, even to run air conditioning.

Cure 55 Catamaran Build Update

The first Cure 55 catamaran (hull #1) has reached a big milestone in the build process. The cabin top is done and the Cure production team have spent the week attaching the structure to the hulls.

It’s always good to see a new build take place like this and with the cabin top windows being cut, the Cure 55 is beginning to show her lines.

Multihull of the year

The molds are ready! With construction soon to begin at Coolum Beach - just a stone's throw from the Sunshine Coast, on Australia’s east coast, the Cure 55 is a sharp all-carbon catamaran that makes the most of its one-piece structure to keep its displacement down to just over 9 tons.

The hulls are angled at 2.5° like the old Catanas, with very fine entry bows, slightly inverted bows and daggerboards. In short, the Cure 55 looks not dissimilar to a Gunboat - only smaller the current ones of course. The Hall Spars rig is obviously also in carbon, as is the Park Avenue boom that sits flush with the coachroof. The hardware on deck gives pride of place to electricity. On the coachroof, there are 3 kWp of solar panels, connected to a 13 kWh LiFePO4 battery bank. Apart from the cooktop and the stove, supplied with 240 V via the inverter, the whole catamaran runs at 48 V, allowing a weight saving of 550 pounds (250 kg) in wiring. All the technical elements are centered and lowered to the maximum to create the best seakeeping behavior for the catamaran. The layouts and deck plan focus around the nacelle and the cockpit, though the owners nevertheless has the entire starboard hull at their disposal. Launch is scheduled for this year. Builder: Cure Marine Overall length: 58.35’ (17.78 m) Waterline length: 54.58’ (16.64 m) Beam: 28.51’ (8.69 m) Draft: 5.02’/7.89’ (1.53/2.41 m) Light displacement: 20,095 lbs (9.12 t) Air draft: 83.01’ (25.3 m) Mainsail: 1,173 sq ft (109 m²) Self-tacking jib: 592 sq ft (55 m²) Gennaker: 2,110 sq ft (196 m²) Water: 211 US gal (800 l) Fuel: 211 US gal (800 l) Engines: 2 x 57 HP

The Cure Marine story

In 2005, two Sunshine Coast locals came up with an ambitious plan to develop a world leading composites facility with the ability to also deliver high end sailing vessels to the recreational marketplace.

Since those early days in Yandina, Dave Biggar and Ian McMahon have built Cure Composites into one of Australia’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of flat panel product into the industrial sector and an industry leader in utilising technology to streamline production process.

In the boat building division, Cure Composites has been responsible for some of Australia’s best known performance multihulls including ‘Zero’ (Schionning G-Force 1800 SSS) and ‘Chill Pill’ (Schionning G-Force 1500).

Fast forward to 2024 and Dave, Ian and the team are well into an ambitious plan to bring Australian design and constructed product into the global boating marketplace. Under the Cure Marine brand, the new Cure 55 Catamaran design was shown to the public on the 1st December 2022 with the first boat launching in 2024. Cure Marine in conjunction with sister companies, Zone RV and One Composites are committed to raising the bar in the Australian Marine Industry for the foreseeable future.

Cure Marine origin story.

Cure marine team stats.

The Cure Marine team boasts a CV with 30 boats built including some of Australia’s most acclaimed performance multihulls.

Across the team there are hundreds of thousands of boating miles and numerous State and National titles ensuring that every component of the new Cure 55 has been subjected to a rigorous selection process based on experience.

30 boats credited

Over 100,000 open water miles across the team., state title, national titles and sydney to hobart winners, composite engineers, shipwrights and sailmakers on staff, over 1,000,000 hours of design and production experience in house, david biggar, founder & partner.

Dave has been a major player in the Australian composites industry for the past twenty years. With a major focus on the ‘Design for Manufacture’ process and a passion for Australian manufacturing, Dave built ZONE RV into one of Australia’s leading off-road camper producers. Eventually, it was only natural for him to combine his composites and manufacturing background with his lifelong passion for sailing and boating in general. Under the Cure Composites brand, in conjunction with Ian McMahon, Dave has been responsible for some of Australia’s most admired performance multihulls.

With the launch of the first Cure 55, 2024 will mark the arrival of Cure Marine onto the global marine stage and that can largely be attributed to Dave’s vision and foresight in driving the technological innovation that the company will utilise to produce a best-in-class product.

Away from the business, Dave maintains a strong family focus whilst also making time to experience all that Australia has to offer through caravanning, sailing and flying aircraft.

Ian McMahon

Ian is a veteran of the Australian marine industry with no less than twenty eight boat builds to his credit. After taking a break from building and launching boats in 2016 to focus on his flat panel composite interests, Ian was lured back by a custom 70ft sailing catamaran project which has now been branded the ‘Bloomfield Custom 70’ and was the first vessel launched in 2024 by the new Cure Marine brand.

Ian continues to manage aspects of the flat panel business and is regarded as one of the foremost experts in this area in Australasia.

Cure Marine depends heavily on Ian’s experience in all areas of marine manufacturing, not least of which to ensure that the product is in line with a standard that Ian has demanded from all builds that he has been involved with.

Ian has also ensured a strong family influence within Cure Marine with both his sons, Kai and Lachie actively involved with the business.

Away from the yard, Ian is an avid boater and family man.

With a strong background in banking and business management, Carl has been appointed as CEO of the Cure Marine brand to oversee its push onto the global stage. As a former part of the management team at our sister company Zone RV, we couldn’t be happier to have Carl back in the family.

Previously, Carl was the owner and director of one of Queensland’s largest sailing schools that focused on both education of new-comers to the sport as well as a focus towards instruction of all aspects of marine safety.

Carl’s strong business acumen and passion for boating makes him the perfect person to push Cure Marine to its next level of development.

When Carl is not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his young family and still finds the time to get out kiting or surfing wherever possible.

LEADING HAND PRODUCTION

With a wealth of experience, Leading hand Sean Brown has been a focal point of the operation at Cure Composites for the better part of a decade.

Having cut his teeth at McConaghy Boats’ award winning facility in China, Sean decided that the Sunshine Coast was where he wanted to call home and raise his family.

With an eye for detail and an impressive composite resume, Sean is a pivotal part of the Cure Marine team.

Leigh Champion

With an impressive international career in composites, Leigh fulfils a senior role both on the production floor and in the production planning sphere.

Having managed many impressive builds including the McConaghy Reichel Pugh 65 ‘Moneypenny’, Leigh knows what it takes to build vessels at the standard required by Cure Marine.

Based on the Sunshine Coast with his young family, Leigh enjoys fishing from his offshore kayak in his downtime.

Sid Thompson

Resource & logistics manager.

Sid has a wealth of diverse experience in the marine industry and is responsible for the smooth handling of the thousands of inputs that go into building the Cure 55.

Sid also has extensive experience in the rig and handling systems areas, which will no doubt prove invaluable in the sea-trialing of each Cure Marine product.
