Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Island Packet 45

Basic specs..

The Island Packet 45 is equipped with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.47 - 1.57 meter (4.82 - 5.12 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 62.0 hp (46 kW), which gives a max speed about 6.7 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 530.0 liters (140 US gallons, 116 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Island Packet 45 is 1.75, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Island Packet 45 is about 311 kg/cm, alternatively 1744 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 311 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1744 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

The Island Packet 45 is built with a full-keel design, which provides excellent directional stability and a forgiving sailing experience. It features a low D/L ratio of 238, which indicates good performance for a full-keel boat. The large rudder is hung in a way that allows for balance, reducing helm loads. The interior layout of the yacht includes a flat hull section and a hard turn to the bilge for increased stiffness. The short bowsprit allows for a larger foretriangle, which can accommodate both the jib and staysail. The SA/D ratio of 17.18, including the area of the staysail, ensures good sail performance.

The Island Packet 45 features a fibreglass hull that requires minimal maintenance during the sailing season. The boat has a long keel, which provides better directional stability, but can make it more difficult to handle in tight spaces. The draft of the boat is around 1.47 – 1.57 meters, which allows it to enter shallow marinas.

The Island Packet 45 has a spacious deck layout, with plenty of room for lounging and entertaining. The cockpit is large and well-designed, with comfortable seating for guests and a helm that offers excellent visibility. The deck itself is made of non-skid fiberglass, providing a secure footing even in wet conditions.

Overall, the Island Packet 45 has a well-designed and well-equipped deck and on-deck area, providing all the amenities necessary for comfortable and enjoyable sailing.

The interior of the Island Packet 45 boasts a layout designed to comfortably accommodate two couples. Both of the staterooms feature adjacent heads, and a spacious navigation station is included in the design. The station is large enough for two people to stand and study charts, with a convenient wet locker located adjacent to the navigation seat. The forward part of the vessel features a Pullman-style berth, with the head located at the front. Island Packet is known for producing boats that are both handsomely outfitted and highly detailed. The boats stand out for their aesthetic appeal, making them a popular choice among sailors.

The yacht features a well-equipped on-deck galley, complete with a refrigerator, stove, and sink. The foredeck is also designed with ample space for anchoring, and the bow features a built-in roller furler for the genoa sail. The yacht also has a built-in windlass for easy anchoring and a large storage locker for ropes and fenders.

The yacht also features a built-in bimini top to provide shade and protection from the sun, and the cockpit also has a built-in shower for rinsing off after a swim. The yacht also features a built-in davit for a dinghy, and a built-in swim ladder for easy access to the water.

Performance

The standard sail plan of the yacht includes a main sail and a genoa, with the option to add a staysail. The rig is designed to provide stability and performance, allowing the yacht to handle well in a variety of weather conditions. The yacht’s performance can be further enhanced with the addition of a spinnaker or gennaker, depending on the sailor preference. The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine with a power output of 62.0 hp, which provides a maximum speed of around 6.7 knots. The fuel tank has a capacity of 530 liters.

The Island Packet 45 is a cutter-rigged sailboat with a reported sail area of 102.2 square meters and a total sail area of 85.7 square meters. The mainsail has a sail area of 38.5 square meters with a P (luff length) of 14.4 meters and an E (foot length) of 5.3 meters. The foresail has a sail area of 47.2 square meters with an I (luff length) of 16.7 meters and a J (foot length) of 5.6 meters, and the forestay length is 17.7 meters.

The Island Packet 45 has a full keel and a draft of 1.47 – 1.57 meter which makes it suitable for shallow marinas. The boat has a well-balanced sail plan, with a cutter rig and a spacious cockpit, making it well suited for long-distance cruising. The interior is designed for two couples, with both staterooms having adjoining heads and a nav station that is big enough for two people to stand and work on the charts. Overall, the Island Packet 45 is a well-built and well-designed sailboat that is well-suited for cruising.

Quick Notes

She seems to be built for it, but I want to be reassured since she's borderline in size to make this trip comfortably. I want to go from (Newport) straight to .

Boat: Sabre 402
from to can get very nasty. It would be good to find out how well the (and boat, and rig, and you) might handle 40 knots of breeze for two or three days at a time, along with the waves that would go with that. Would you be going solo? That brings to mind the recent story of "Windward Passage". You'd certainly want a good window, but new cycles are not going to wait for a 29' boat, which is not likely able to outrun them either. Where are you going to stow and stores for a 2-4 week ?

can get very rough with short nasty seas. A 29ft boat (even a long type) under these conditions in 35+kts of , especially on a beat, can be very uncomfortable! You will be thrown around the , will be difficult, using the will be a major operation.
I speak from experience. A few hours is one thing, a few days is a completely different experience.
Of course it can be done, and if the boat is in very good condition and properly set up, it will probably be ok; the question is will you?
You mention being scared. That is natural to a point, but fear can be very debilitating. If you are constantly fearing something breaking, or losing control of the situation, it saps your energy and your mental resilience. Experience is the key, and trust in the boat. Given what you say, I'd recommend one experienced crew.
Good Luck

company has to say about this. You go pretty much due east until you around 65°W (sometimes called I-65) before aiming south for your . The reason is to get your easting in before you reach the trades which would put you on the , perhaps for hundreds of miles - not nice.

- From the lower Chesapeake the Gulf Stream is not far offshore and you can get a weather window to get across it in benign conditions. Once you get past about 4-5 days you get whatever weather you get. The only bailout spot is . The conditions can vary enormously. Last time we did it the good sailing winds predicted did not materialize and we ended up going into for more . On a earlier trip we hustled to get in front of a cold front that was developing off the US coast. It eventually produced a cold front that went from to , but moved very, very slowly to the east, mainly moved north. We had a week of beam reaching in around 25 knots that was excellent for making progress. My point is you need to be ready for what comes.

- We were told that if things are going well when you approach Bermuda (you will get close), don't stop. We know of someone who did not stop and was stuck in Bermuda for three weeks as a series of depressions passed. Go to Bermuda on the way back, likely in May or early-June. Much nicer weather to be had.

- I would say you would want three crew on your boat with two good sea berths so people can sleep. All three need to be competent to handle the boat alone in normal conditions so those off-watch don't get called unless conditions are really nasty. My wife and I could handle our Bristol 45.5 in almost any conditions because the boat was well set-up.

- Your comments about being afraid in conditions not all that bad suggest to me you might not be ready for this trip without more experience. A good trip would be a mid-June passage to and from Bermuda. It gives you offshore and GS experience (the Stream is much further offshore and you are going across at more of an angle). You could see what breaks on the boat and what the shortcomings are. You could also test potential crew.

- As for , check with your to see what size staysail he recommends for this purpose, probably somewhat smaller than the standard one. Self-steering is a big issue. A standard unit can easily be overwhelmed, even in 25-30 knots and hand for days is not nice, ask me how I know. is a big issue if you have both an autopilot and a . Vane steering is pricey and probably not worth it if this is a one-off (or a two-off with a Bermuda trip), but a or similar is very reliable and doesn't use electrons.

- I would go to first and on to Antigua if that is your desired goal. The Dutch side of the island, is duty-free, and has the headquarters of the two big chandleries in the - and Island World. Chances are that after 1500 nm you will need to do some and you might as well save some . All the trades are there as well.

Let me know if you have other queries.

starting at age 18.

The numbers on her boat are a bit better than that of an IP29 but not that far off.

Your boat should do fine.

I plan to do something similar to what you are doing soon on my Bristol 27 that I bought for $2,000 in 2011.

It has good offshore numbers as well with slightly better comfort ratio than the others.

with that size vessel. Inside (ICW) or outside in hops. Doing hops down the coast will get you more experience and confidence, You will be able to use what the boat is designed for, short 2-5 day trips. Small vessels have small , , and provisions .

Yes you can push the limitations but why? You can add stuff but you will run out of room quickly, when adding and the inside space will get smaller and smaller. The more you add the slower your vessel will go.

Also At that size reducing sail ahead of forecasted heavy wind will slow you down to a crawl. So the longer you are out there the more exposed you are to breakage of all kinds and running out of provisions.

Just my opinion

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
