Join the Malolo Molokini Snorkeling Tour to experience awesome Turtle Town and Molokini like never before with your tour departing Wailuku, HI, Maalaea Boat Harbor Road. This immersive experience is unlike the typical snorkeling adventure, as this lasts approximately five hours and covers two breathtaking locations, all guided by an experienced captain and crew. When it comes to this particular snorkeling tour, you get a few options in terms of departure times. There is the morning option which includes two stops along with the afternoon departure, which only differs from the morning variety in that breakfast isn’t served and there are different fare options. 

The Malolo Molokini Snorkeling Tour morning departure begins with a continental breakfast, which is served as part of your tour cost in addition to lunch and your snorkeling gear. There are also flotation devices like float vests, body boards, and noodles that you can utilize to enhance your experience if you so desire. You do have the option of a wetsuit as well, which you can rent along with a 16-megapixel Olympus underwater digital camera. 

Your tour will visit both Turtle Town and Molokini as mentioned above, with around an hour of snorkeling being provided at each site. At each location, you will see a great deal of marine life and create lasting memories to be sure. Aboard the 55-foot comfortable, stable catamaran the Malolo, there are trampolines on which to lay, and the vessel is equipped with two easy access stairways into the water on both the rear and front of the boat. There are also two restrooms available, which is a big asset when spending hours on the water, as well as a freshwater shower. 

If you aren’t familiar with the Molokini site, you will be after your snorkeling tour as your crew will explain all the interesting historical facts. Molokini is located just three miles from the southwest coast of Maui. It is a crescent moon-shaped island that spans over 18 acres and rises over 160 feet. The kaleidoscope of coral that is found in the area provides a safe haven for over 250 species of tropical fish, creating a truly unique snorkeling experience. 

Molokini’s history involves the arrival of the first Polynesians to the area at around 500 BC. Molokini for Hawaiians is part of life. For Europeans, it was an inlet that remained uncharted prior to the efforts of French explorer Jean-Francsoise de Galoup in 1786. King Kalakaua hired two U.S. engineers in 1883 to survey the area, which led to the establishment of the Alexander and Baldwin Company. 

Before the conservation efforts put forth by Hawaii in 1977, Molokini was used as a target practice for the United States Navy, with some signs of the damage it endured still visible today. Its beautiful black coral was also sadly overharvested between the 1950s and 1977. Thanks to the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District, the area is now a protected space. In fact, the only activities allowed in the crater’s inner reef today are snorkeling and scuba. The reef surrounding the crescent-shaped island is currently monitored by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. It is home to many tropical fish species as mentioned above as well as being the home to 38 species of hard coral and 100 species of algae. 

Turtle Town, the other stop in the Molo Molokini Snorkeling Tour, is a snorkeling site located off the coast of Maui near Makena. It is so named because it is a frequent stop for green sea turtles who spend time resting on rocks and eating seaweed in the area. You can only access the site via boat. Underwater, several lava formations were developed by submarine volcanoes. The coral reef at Turtle Town is also abundant and breathtaking, making Turtle Town among the most popular snorkeling destinations in all of Maui.

One of the most magnificent places to snorkel on Maui is Molokini Crater, and you can only get there by boat. The Malolo, our 55 foot power catamaran, is a super comfortable ride that has everything you’ll need.  Even if our Malolo afternoon snorkel is your first experience with this fun ocean activity, you’ll have a great time. All equipment and instructions are provided by the fabulous crew, and there is a $7.50 hot dog and soda lunch served onboard, too!

Molokini Crater is a marine protected area, so the fish are free to roam, and you are free to watch them do so. The animals there are just beautiful, and you can happily lose yourself while floating above the reef. You are likely to see parrotfish, yellow tang, cornetfish, and surgeonfish, as well as many others. Lucky visitors will catch a glimpse of a spotted eagle ray cruising through, and don’t forget to look up—Molokini Crater is a bird preserve, too!

The Malolo often sails to Coral Gardens to snorkel along the Pali sea cliffs in West Maui in the afternoon when the trade winds are too strong to go to Molokini.  Our morning departures almost always go to Molokini Crater.

Digital underwater cameras are available for purchase. If you wear prescription glasses, there are optical masks you can rent to use underwater. If you tend to run cold, there are wetsuits for rent, and they bring flotation devices galore. The Malolo afternoon snorkel cruise has got you covered!

As each day unfolds on Maui, weather and ocean conditions naturally dictate the best snorkel spots. The experienced captain will decide whether you go to beautiful Molokini Crater or the aptly named “Coral Gardens,” a gorgeous reef off the west side. Coral Gardens is home to all kinds of wonderful marine life, too!

This tour leaves from Maalaea Harbor in the afternoon. (That means you get to sleep in!) Check-in is at 12:30 pm, and you return at 4:00 pm—enough time to make your dinner reservations.

Even if you’ve never snorkeled before, or are not a strong swimmer, you can still snorkel! The crew will patiently instruct you on how to use the snorkel gear. If you don’t want to snorkel or swim, the Calypso has a glass bottom in one section, so you can watch your friends and the fish. If you decide to join them later, reaching the water is simple. Wide staircases are lowered through the water’s surface. If you’d rather go express, the boat also has two water slides and a second deck jumping-off point.

After your Molokini afternoon snorkeling, Calypso will whisk you to Turtle Town – a second snorkeling spot. About Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is located between the islands of Maui and Kaho’olawe.  This beautiful site is not only home to several fish species, but many species of birds, as well!  The crater is a designated Marine Life Conservation District and bird preserve, so no fishing or climbing on the crater is allowed, but wearing flippers and a mask to watch the fish is perfectly wonderful.

The inner curve of the crater shelters a huge reef where the visibility is often more than 100 feet – perfect for snorkeling! Fish of all kinds will swim by, busily conducting their beautiful business. While you’re exploring, you may see parrotfish, black triggerfish, and longnose butterflyfish. An underwater photographer will be swimming in the mix too, capturing you and your friends/family discovering one of the coolest places on the planet!

Snorkel Locations and Wildlife

• Snorkel locations are not guaranteed they are determined daily by our captains based on weather conditions, swell height and direction, and many years of experience in Maui waters
• The ride to the snorkel location is approximately 60 minutes. If prone to seasickness, please prepare accordingly

We had a large group with small children. The crew was very accommodating and friendly! They made sure we had a spot together on the boat and were comfortable! They had all the right equipment to make snorkeling doable for all skill levels and ages including a viewing board to allow my 2 year old niece to see the ocean bottom. The food was great! The boat was clean and spacious! The family said it was a highlight of the trip! We would definitely do it again!

This trip was amazing. Having a big boat was worth it. Sure there were more people. But when there was a heavy surf we barely noticed. The food for both breakfast and lunch was great!!! Also on the ride back they gave out some little ice creams too! The photographer Marley is amazing at photographing and he has both go pros and nice camera to use in the water. This was 100% worth it.

We took our kids (6 & 11) and we had a blast! The highlight was swimming with a turtle for sure. Every just seeing the cool fish was amazing. The girls loved the slides off the boat and the food was good. Definitely would do it again

An absolute must do. This is an awesome adventure for the price. You get to stop at two locations and even if you only get out and snorkel at one it is way worth it for the cost. Molokini was incredible and clear. The crew on this boat makes everything even better the captain is funny, friendly, gives clear helpful instructions to snorkel newbies like myself and they have everything they can for sea sickness. Truly an amazing time with the Calypso.
