Review of Sigma 400

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with a Perkins Prima diesel engine at 34.0 hp (25 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sigma 400 is about 261 kg/cm, alternatively 1466 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 261 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1466 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Broker Remarks

Sigma 400 for sale.  A very fast cruiser racer of Rob Humphries hull design based on the 1988 Whitbread Maxi “Rothmans”. She delivers spectacularly in heavy weather with balance, stability and no slamming. Raced in her early life, this boat has seen more cruising in the last ten years but has benefitted from extensive renovation in 2014 including a new engine (200 hours), excellent electrics (Rolls batteries and inverter), solar panels, an extensive electronics fit including full race TackTik instruments, radar,  VHF radio with AIS and a full suite of Kevlar sails plus two symmetrical spinnakers. Fractional rig with running backstays. This is a lot of boat for a 40 footer.  Some renovation to the rear cabins and the option to fit a supplied new table is needed otherwise in excellent condition. Standing rigging was professionally checked and reinstalled in 2017. The current owners have moved abroad and are reluctant to sell but this boat needs to be sailed!

Broker's Comments

This sturdy ocean going Sigma 400 yacht, designed by Rob Humphries, has very little mileage on her having been de-commissioned in 2003 for a period of 12 years. Just 3 seasons ago in 2015, the current owners started their investment programme to get her ready for some serious offshore sailing. The list of upgrades is quite staggering and includes; New Beta 30hp engine 2017. New Selden mast & standing rigging (2015), New McWilliams mainsail (2017). New Rudder. The latest Garmin GPSmap7410 system looks after the nav and new upholstery was fitted (2015) along with new cockpit teak. The hull has been copper-coated and all safety equipment is new and complies with OSR Category 2 for offshore sailing. Ideally the owners would like to sell a 1/5th share in the boat and to continue their extensive sailing programme for 2018 which includes the 'Round Ireland' yacht race and the increasingly popular ISORA series. It really is a massive commitment to own and prepare a 40 footer for offshore races like The Fastnet or D2D, so if you wanted to dip your toe into it first, with like-minded individuals who share your passion, then this may be an ideal way for you to join a team who have done all the preparation and have put some good miles under the keel in the last couple of years. Some of the recent highlights on the water include 10th Overall in ISORA, 2nd in the St. Kilda and a superb 4th in Class in the notoriously difficult 2017 D2D race, as well as completing the Fastnet Race. If you would like to join this team of offshore enthusiasts, then please do get in touch. If you are planning a campaign of your own, then we would be delighted to arrange a viewing at your convenience. These boat details are subject to contract. Hi, Does anyone have an opinion on these good looking boats? As well as all round opinions, I am particularly interested in shorthand-ability as most pictures I see seem to have about 8 burly blokes on the rail! Thanks!

Well-known member

They are Rob Humphryes designed. Years ago I spoke to a chap in the designers office about a 400. Very much a fully crewed boat with a huge main and needs 10 on the rail, forget about short handing. I got a 41 (David Thomas design, like all the real sigmas) instead. A completelty different type of boat.

I've sailed a few 100 miles on one - Prime Evil owned by Wetstuff http://www.wetstuff.org.uk Great boats, but not the sort of boat I'd like to sail short handed though, they are fast and powerful and great fun to sail. accommodation is good, though small by todays standards 1 ensuite double aft to port , two singles to stb. double up front and a curved saloon, secure galley. Downside for cruising is the draft, over 2M /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Good solid fast racer cruises /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

  • 29 May 2009

I had seen Prime Evil on the web, she looks lovely. I suspected as much re short handing. shame - there are not alot of cruiser racer 40 footers out there in that price range. Dave.

wotayottie

Dont know about the 40 but looked over her smaller sister the 35 and no way was it a good boat for single handing. There are few newish boats that do seem set up for single handing. My last Moody was cr*p for that. New boat (Stalight) is a bit better but would still require single handing with autohelm.

Anthony

I raced one across the Atlantic a few years ago, alot of fun, but with running backstays I am not sure I would want to shorthand. You really feel the power of that rig, great for playing on but could quickly turn into a headache if short of hands. Ants

History of Sigma Yachts

Sigma Yachts was established in the United Kingdom back in the late 1970s, radically changing the sailing landscape with their line of high-performance cruiser racers. This innovative boat manufacturer found immediate popularity and, amidst great appreciation, quickly emerged as one of the leader troves of cruiser-racer designs across the globe.

Sigma's boat-building ideology was centred on the concept of crafting cruiser racers that could operate well on both fronts. David Thomas, a well-known British designer, was the mastermind behind the creations that were famous for their speed, seaworthy build, and sensible below-deck arrangements. The Sigma 33’ and 36' became stalwarts at yacht clubs, with enduring popularity that has spanned decades.

Today, Sigma yachts are no longer in production but they remain an iconic part of the sport cruiser racing yacht genealogy. Even though the company has since changed hands and moved its base of operations to other regions, Sigma's original home was in Cornwall, and many of their yachts are still seen sailing and racing on UK waters. This timeless brand fully embodies the spirit of robust British sailing engineering and their exemplary product line remains a testimony to their excellence.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Also available with a fractional sloop rig and shallower draft winged keel.

  1. SIGMA 400

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
