You Can Stay In A New York Airbnb That's A Yacht

the Crown Goose at dock

This classic yacht available through  Airbnb is truly a unique experience. Named the Crown Goose, it may be one of the  best Airbnb rentals in New York . You and five other guests can enjoy a stay on the wooden yacht, which has four bedrooms and five beds. For $311 a night, you'll enjoy fantastic views of New York Harbor. The boat has one and a half bathrooms, plus a wash basin in the bunk room. You won't even have to leave behind your fur babies because this host allows pets to join you during your stay!

There are books and other reading materials to enjoy in case you forget to bring your beach read. Additionally, you can use the sound system to listen to music while relaxing on deck or down below. There's no washer or hair dryer included, and there's no Wi-Fi or TV either. However, with all the nearby attractions surrounding the yacht, you're unlikely to miss them. If you're someone who is a bit taller, you should be prepared to watch your head, though. The boat has a height maximum of just over 6 feet at its peak and goes down a little lower towards the back.

What you can expect when staying on this boat

As you walk up to the boat, you'll be struck by how stunning this classic wooden yacht is. Per the Airbnb listing , the exterior and interior of the ship glow with its rich wooden construction. It's furnished with gorgeous rugs and chairs that bring a sense of elegance and vintage vibes. Visitors will enjoy the adorable nautical décor and bedding in each room. The bedrooms are cozy and could be a tight fit for those who are taller, but you'll get an authentic experience without a doubt! The bunk beds are perfect for kids and teens; they'll love the privacy the bunk room provides.

You can cook all of your meals in the galley kitchen equipped with essential cooking utensils, a fridge, microwave, electric stove, oven, and toaster. When you start your day, you can use the drip coffee maker or steep some tea in the kettle. The kitchen is surprisingly large for the small boat, but you might not want to use it considering how close you'll be to some extraordinary bistros, cafés, and restaurants. You can even enjoy a lovely sunbathing moment on the deck in a lounge chair. Keep an eye out for Lady Liberty because there's a view of her from the yacht.

Exciting amenities and surrounding attractions

During your stay on the Crown Goose, you will not be able to operate the yacht, nor will the boat leave the dock, per  Airbnb . However, there are plenty of clear views of the infamous  New York skyline, and the boat is docked near Brooklyn Bridge Park, so there's plenty to see and do from right there. Brooklyn Bridge Park says there are activities like fishing, pickle ball, birding, and roller skating within the park. There are places to rent bikes you can ride to some of New York City's most famous attractions.

The incredible views and the yacht's proximity to top of the line entertainment and eateries have set this Airbnb up for success, which is evident from its 4.9 stars and 40 reviews. A reviewer named Eric said, "I really loved staying in this yacht. Being on the water with the amazing views of Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty was very nice." And Chris raved, "Lived up to my expectations. This was such a unique way to stay, I was curious if it would live up to the photos and it absolutely did."

The 10 best boat rentals in NYC

Debating between a two-hour hire or a full-day trip along the Hudson? Choose a boat to start your adventures around NYC

Alex Floyd-Douglass

Okay, so finding a boat rental may not be the first thing on your mind when planning your next trip to NYC. However, some would argue (us included) that one of the best ways to see the city at its best is on the water. From two-hour bareboat hires (yes, you’ll be the skipper) or a boat tour to full-day events fit for up to 600 people on a super yacht, there is a wide choice of boat rental options in New York City for you to choose from And we’re here to walk you through them and help you find the right one for you – and your socials, of course. Let’s get into it.

Before sailing into our list of the best boat rentals in NYC, we’ve got to keep you in the know-how for renting boats. It may sound super simple, but there are certainly a few things you should know before booking your dream yacht. Thanks to us (no shame), we’ve put in the research so you don't have to. Take a look and get ready for one of the best things to do in NYC .

How much does it cost to rent a boat in NYC?

Renting a boat in NYC can be a surprisingly cheap thing to do, especially when split between your pals or family members. Most of the offerings are centered around quarter- and half-day rentals, while the mega-party yachts occasionally deliver a full-day experience. Prices for quarter-day boat rentals begin around $500, while larger boats and half-day rentals can get into the lower thousands. With that in mind, we’d suggest finalizing your guestlist and budget before putting down a deposit. It's smarter in the long run, promise.

How much does it cost to charter a private yacht in NYC?

Chartering a private yacht in NYC varies from other parts of the country where you’ll often hear of $100,000 charters as standard procedure. Thankfully, in New York City, things are a little different. Full-day charters can range from $5,000 to $60,000 – although the higher price points typically cater to large groups of 300 guests plus. it's best to decide beforehand what kind of party you’re throwing and how many guests you’d like to accommodate to ensure you get the best deal.

What do you need to rent a boat in NYC?

To rent a boat in NYC, you’ll need to be over 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have a credit card (in most cases). In some circumstances, you’ll also need a Boating Safety Certificate, but it’s best to check in with your boat rental company in advance to find out exactly what they need from you. Alternatively, you won’t need any sailing qualifications if you charter a private yacht as the captain will be in charge – just have the cash ready.

Does a crew come with a boat rental in NYC?

No, a crew doesn’t come with a boat rental in NYC. If a boat is offered bareboat, this means that you’ll be the skipper for the duration of the trip and there will be no captain onboard. However, if you charter a private yacht, more often than not, there will be a crew onboard to heighten your experience. You will need to verify this in your package offering.

What's the difference between NYC rentals and charters?

Most boat rentals in NYC are typically quarter-day or half-day trips centered around the Hudson River and offer up a unique perspective of New York City. There’s also a large variety of boats available, ranging from speedy motorboats to soaring sailboats. A few boat rentals in NYC offer the bareboat option, while the majority will have a captain available to sail you around the Big Apple's coastline so you sit back, relax on charter and enjoy that glass of bubbly in peace.

Summer in the city never felt so good. Manhattan, the main NY boat rental area, offers several types of boats fit for every occasion and interest. Whether you're looking for the perfect NY boat rental for your fishing adventure or you want a sunset dinner cruise with views of the Manhattan skyline, Sailo's got you covered.

How to rent a yacht in New York?

There are three main types of NY yacht rentals to choose from: sailboats , motor boats , and party boats . These are daily yacht rentals, meaning they can be rented for up to a certain number of hours each day, depending on the rental. You can choose the vessel for your trip based on your party size and activity preference.

What to see in New York when renting a boat?

For the most variety in the heart of New York City, Manhattan is the place to be. Here, the city and the sea come alive in perfect harmony, with luxurious dinner cruises and adventurous excursions to satisfy the boat-lover in all of us. This city has a boat rental for every occasion and convenient access to the surrounding areas of the northeast. If you're here for a weekend or even just a day, we recommend Manhattan for its central location to all things fun in the Big Apple. Take a morning sail in the fresh Atlantic air, rent a party boat for your next spring break vacay, or dine aboard a sunset dinner cruise through this beautiful harbor.

Jersey City

Jersey City also offers some amazing yacht rentals in NYC. The Jersey City marina is slightly smaller, but don't let that stop you from checking out this beautiful hidden gem right across the water from Manhattan. If you're looking for a relaxing romantic sail or a family-friendly sailing for the weekend, this is the place to be. While you're here, take advantage of the close proximity to some of New York City's iconic sites, like the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. These attractions make NY boat rentals completely worth it.

Other nearby locations to explore

If you're in the New York City area and want to explore some other scenic destinations by sailing, we recommend the Hamptons and Oyster Bay . Each of these locations is perfect for couples, families, or groups of friends. For a taste of the traditional, head to the Hamptons for picturesque northeastern views and beautiful seaside architecture. Go fishing in Montauk or join in the fun with some epic watersports rentals for any skill level. If you're looking for even more history and delicious cuisine, head over to Oyster Bay. This sailing paradise is located just a stone's throw away from the historic Vanderbilt Estate (and some incomparable oceanfront dining). No matter what suits your fancy, choose your own boating adventure on your northeastern vacation.

When is the best season to rent a yacht in New York?

Because New York is located in the northeast U.S., you should keep in mind local weather conditions when planning your boating excursion. Generally, the sailing season in New York runs from the end of April through October, as this is the time of year when the weather is the most permissible. But for the best experience, we recommend anytime from May through August. This is the warmest time of year and will offer you long, sunny days on the water with gorgeous evening sunsets. Of course, you should check the average weather conditions during the time you plan to visit and pack accordingly. Spring and fall temperatures tend to range in the high 50°s with some rainfall, which summer temperatures are generally in the 80°s with some humidity. Because the temperature can differ within the sailing season, be sure to pay attention to the weather forecast before embarking on your boating vacation and pack the appropriate clothing and gear before you set sail.

Spending the Night on an Idyllic Houseboat... in New York City

After thoroughly investigating " the worst hostel in New York City " earlier this year, for Outdoors Week Curbed decided to embark on a more serene, pastoral overnight jaunt: to a houseboat docked in the Plumb Beach Channel , in between Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach in southeastern Brooklyn. Here's what happened.

How to find a houseboat in New York City : Go to Airbnb's NYC page, type in boat, and voila . More than one vessel in this little slip is available for rent, but host Sean, a cop by day who lives a few boats down, was willing to waive the two-night minimum. So for $118/night , my travel companion and I booked this one-bedroom seacraft , securely moored to the dock, that came complete with a roof deck , back terrace, cable, Wi-Fi , and a kitchen and shower nicer than many New York City apartments. This is not roughing it .

3:30 p.m.: Depart Upper West Side with a groan, as Google Maps says it'll take an hour and a half to get to the boat, off of Knapp Street and Harkness Avenue, just northeast of Coney Island and Brighton Beach. Remember that we're stocked with magazines and try to think of the travel time as part of the whole getaway thing. You know, that thing New Yorkers aren't very good at.

4:15 p.m.: Still on the train. Speak to adorable, excitable child in swim trunks going to Brighton Beach for a dip with his mom. It's starting to feel like a vacation. The B and Q trains all go to the Sheepshead Bay stop. From there, take bus B4 to the very last stop.

Circa 5 p.m.: Depart bus with small rolling suitcase and a laptop-loaded urbanite's handbag, feeling vaguely ridiculous. Like a tourist in my own town. It's sorta deserted.

Walk south down Knapp Street and hang a left on Harkness. Pass a bagel place and a hair salon of the left, a Dunkin Donuts on the right, then stop before you get to the Cold Stone, TGI Friday's, and a lobster shack. Wait, this is not scenic. WTF, mate?

You are here. It's a parking lot. It's hot.

5:15 p.m.: Sean has left the key in a lockbox hooked onto the green gate. I open the gate.

I drag my suitcase down the plank and onto the dock, and make a right to get to the slip. This is her!

5:30 p.m. Sean left bottled water in the fridge. So I explore the boat, which, I notice, is solid and doesn't rock. Not needing to get sea legs: +1. (Click through for the full tour.)

5:45 p.m.: Neighbors are chilling on the front deck of the boat next door. I chat to the couple about life on the water. They spend summers here. They've got a cat. They're drinking wine. The sun is shining. Was I really in Manhattan an hour and a half ago?

6 p.m.-ish: I'm too relaxed to even take note of the time. I grab sunblock and the New Yorker fiction issue and climb up to the boat's roof deck to take in the scene.

Travel buddy K arrives on his bike; the dock even has a place to park it, albeit by the recycling bins. We had out to find food in Sheepshead Bay, and purchase a bottle of red for later at the liquor store by the Dunkin Donuts. Claaaaassy.

6:30-8:30 p.m.: We stroll to Emmons Avenue, the main drag along the waterfront, and walk west, passing Kingsborough Community College and other sites. Plus a famous bait-and-tackle shop. And a clam shack. And a yacht club with rather Brutalist architecture. There are about a bazillion boats offering fishing trips at every hour of the day or night. Also, swans. Also, a footbridge to Manhattan beach. We eat at a restaurant that serves food from Azerbaijan. Everyone is drinking, eating, and laughing. Life by the water is just so much more fun.

9 p.m.: Sean has left beers in the fridge. We play gin rummy and listen to Sister Sledge. Oh, and we work. The Wi-Fi is SOLID.

9:30 p.m. on: Getting ready for bed, we notice flames shooting out of a building across the way. Oh, it's just an incinerator. The boat doesn't rock, but we fall asleep easily.

7 a.m.: We wake up to the water and boats and peace. I jog along to Manhattan Beach and back, watching everyone getting ready to commute to work and some fishermen trying to catch a few in the inlet between the beach and Sheepshead Bay. I feel a million miles away from it all. (K ran to Gerritsen Beach , across the channel, and through Marine Park .)

8 a.m.: The shower is a piece of cake. Clean, operational. So, for that matter, is the toilet.

8:30 a.m. The wife in the neighbor couple is sitting in their little speedboat. A swan comes over to say hello. A SWAN. I pop out to say hi, too. Breakfast is from the bagel shop on the corner of Knapp and Harkness. Bacon, egg, and cheese, just like from the bodega back home. The Wi-Fi is so stellar that that two posts for Curbed NY were penned from the houseboat. Thinking of making it our new HQ. But checkout is at 11 a.m.

11:15 a.m.: I reluctantly drag my suitcase to the bus stop. Bus Time, letting me know when the B4 is on its way, helps make the most of every last minute. I take the bus to the train, which zips me to Midtown and back to work.

Renting Paul S.'s yacht was a fantastic experience! The vessel was pristine and well-equipped, ensuring a comfortable and luxurious outing. Paul's hospitality and knowledge of the area enhanced our adventure. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a memorable day on the water.

Ian was fantastic! Ian explained everything in detail and was very welcoming. I really enjoyed the experience and hospitality. I wanted to surprise my partner with the trip, and Ian was very accommodating in trying to keep it as last minute as possible. The boat was very well maintained and the ride was extremely smooth. Ian helped me create memories that'd last a lifetime and for that I'd highly recommend him.

Happiest experience ever; words cannot express my gratitude. I had the opportunity to visit all of New York, and the staff was incredibly friendly and eager to assist with anything. I've booked the nicest sailing trip ever and I'll do so again! I am quite delighted with this experience.

It's a bit windy but we all enjoyed the view and how friendly and professional Andrew is. He was very kind in helping my friend who has sea sickness. I had a wonderful birthday today on the boat even though it was cold. Also, they kindly waited for me to arrive due to unexpected traffic jam.

Christopher and his crew really made our wedding day a truly unique and amazing experience. The Cabana boat is a MUST if you are looking for something to do with a large group in NYC. Off the charts experience!!

Testimonials

I have attended several events on the Yacht Justine. The plush furnishings and careful interior layout produce an atmosphere that is both elegant and intimate. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. A truly memorable way to experience the New York harbor.

Mike Mallner

We spent the first night of our honeymoon on Yacht Justine. It was the ten year anniversary of 9/11, and the tour around lower Manhattan was sobering and reflective, but also heart-stoppingly beautiful. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our country and one of its greatest cities, and made the first day of our marriage magic and memorable. The accommodations were also very chic and comfortable, preparing us for the five-star resorts we had booked for the rest of our honeymoon. On top of spending the night in luxurious accommodations, we got a kick out of the novelty of knowing we were on a boat. All in all, it was a cherished experience, and one we would recommend to anyone looking for a truly special night.

Rachel Darwin , Communications Manager at Taft and Partners

Justine is beautiful, outside and in; and her crew is tremendous. I have been on many leisure trips on New York waterways on all types of boats from rustic sailboats to cruise ships, and can say that the aesthetic and ethos of one's immediate surroundings greatly impacts the experience. The elegant look of Justine, and the friendly unpretentious feel of her crew has been the number one factor in my enjoyment.

Sidney Oolongo , Events Coordinator

I had the great pleasure of coming aboard Yacht Justine for a cruise on NYE. Justine is a beautiful vessel and the staff was extremely accommodating and nice. I was very impressed by how attentive the staff was and all their efforts to make sure that I enjoyed my time aboard Justine. I will definitely book another cruise in the near future. If you are looking for a classy retreat from the city in the company of an incredible staff, this is where you want to be.

Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.

Q Who will be on the yacht with us?

All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.

Q Justine is a huge yacht! What is up with the 12 guest limit??

It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.

Q I represent a client who has special security and privacy concerns.

We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.

Q What can I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.

Q Can we bring children?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.

Q Can we bring pets?

We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.

Q Is there Wi-Fi?

No, but cell phones and streaming data will work throughout all of our routes.

Q What is the music situation?

Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.

Q Do I have to remove shoes aboard?

We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.

Q Are any parts of the yacht off-limits?

Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.

Q Where do you sail from? Where do you go?

Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.

Q Which times/dates are available or recommended?

All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.

Q What if the weather is bad?

If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.

Q I see the same boats listed everywhere? Where should I book this?

Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.

Q How do we pay for a cruise?

We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.

Q What discounts do you offer?

Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.

Q What is a customary tip?

Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.

Q I am an influencer! Please give me a free cruise so I can post photos of your yacht and get you tons of business!

Thank you but pass.

Q Are we allowed to swim from the yacht?

New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.

Q Can I fly my drone?

We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.

Q Are there any kayaks, jetskis, etc?

We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.

Q Can we film aboard?

You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Q What are your policies regarding masks and the Coronavirus?

We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.

Q Am I allowed to smoke on the yacht?

Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.

Q Are you Handicap-accessible?

No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.

Q Will I be seasick?

New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

X-Men

The X-perience of a lifetime is here.

Airbnb has redesigned a private mansion in Westchester, N. Y. — the home of the X-Men in Marvel comics — into a replica of the mutant manor from “X-Men ’97.”

The mansion, decorated in the 2-D animation style of the Disney+ series, is complete with replicas of Wolverine’s and Jubilee’s bedrooms, Beast’s science lab, the telepathic Cerebro device, the Danger Room and other features. There’s even the severed head of an evil, robotic Sentinel laying in the front yard to greet you as you arrive.

Popular on Variety

Variety toured the “X-Men ’97” mansion ahead of the announcement and got the full superhero experience. The mutant home is tucked away in scenic Westchester, surrounded by woods and a sparkling lake that makes it feel like a real Marvel getaway. Upon arriving, the iconic “X-Men ’97” theme song blasts from the mansion as you walk up. The life-sized Sentinel head sits on a pile of rubble, a leftover that hasn’t been cleaned up after a previous X-Men battle.

Every nook and cranny of the mansion is vibrantly colored, with bold comic book sketch lines applied to surfaces to make it feel like you’re actually in an episode of “X-Men ’97.” Portraits of Charles Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Gambit, Bishop, Beast and more adorn the entryway. As you go inside, you’re greeted by three X-Men “trainees” who guide you through the experience.

The bright, purple colors of Jubilee’s bedroom stand out against Wolverine’s rustic room. Music posters, star decals and a working TV with a VHS player decorate the young mutant’s quarters. There’s even an arcade machine with the classic “X-Men” game in the corner you can play. Jubilee’s yellow jacket, pink shirt and gloves hang in the closet. Next door, two guests can sleep in twin beds covered with blue X-Men bedspread.

After the room tour, Jubilee has a special welcome message for the visitors in a gadget room downstairs, filled with the rest of the X-Men’s costumes and weapons. You can get up close to Wolverine’s yellow spandex and mask, try on Cyclops’ visor and check out the “X-Men ’97” outfits for Gambit, Storm, Rogue and Sunspot.

Beast’s bedroom doubles as his science lab, and visitors are taught by an instructor how to make two fruity drinks. Beakers of juice, simple syrup and crushed ice await you for a quick refresher. After that, it’s trivia time in the Cerebro room. You can test your X-Men trivia and take a personality quiz to determine your mutant power — plus there’s a wearable Cerebro that’s perfect for a photo op.

The Danger Room is the final stop on the tour. A super-strong trainer will help you awaken your mutant abilities with some exercise warm-ups. You’ll play a few games in the huge training room, which has oversized dumbbells, laser cannons and whirring saws on the walls. After that, you’ll be led into Charles Xavier’s office and say goodbye to your guides as they’re whisked away to battle more Sentinels. Dinner (and breakfast the next morning) will be prepared for you; you’ll have the rest of the night to hang out in the mansion before your mutant vacation comes to an end.

New York Giants Rookie Regrets Taking Photo On A Yacht

Newly drafted NFL safety Tyler Nubin learned an early lesson as a New York Giant.

Nubin didn't know that Giants fans can't stomach the sight of yachts . Why the strange phobia?

New York was infamously buried in the 2017 Wild Card round by the Green Bay Packers, who clubbed the Giants in a 38-13 loss. The Giants' defeat came days after several G-Men posted a photo of themselves on a yacht. Considering how badly the G-Men showed up to work after their photo, fans naturally assumed that the picture was bad luck, or that New York should've taken their assignment more seriously than spending time on a yacht.

That said, Giants rookie Tyler Nubin spent some time on a yacht with his friends over the weekend, coming off his selection on Friday in the second round of the NFL draft. Nubin was in a celebratory mood, but the sight of the dreaded yacht haunted Giants fans, almost signaling another miserable year ahead of them in East Rutherford.

The safety learned his lesson, vowing never to hop on a yacht again. New York finished 6-11 last season, suggesting they may have bigger issues than a yacht superstition.

New York can forgive the highly graded safety out of Minnesota, who's expected to be the ball-hawk to replace Xavier McKinney, who left the Giants for ( you guessed it ) the Packers this offseason. The Giants let their elite 24-year-old safety walk in free agency, so expectations will naturally get heavy for Nubin in that secondary.

Speaking of McKinney, Nubin had fun with a Giants fan's comment on X, which warned the young Giants safety to stay away from ATVs. Xavier McKinney shattered his hand in an ATV accident during the Giants' Week 9 bye week in 2022.

On the bright side, New York tends to draft well in the second round, specifically regarding the safety position. The Giants snagged McKinney and former Pro Bowler Landon Collins in the second round.

New York also seemingly missed out on bringing back veteran safety Adoree' Jackson, who could've benefited from a reunion with Shane Bowen, the Giants' new defensive coordinator who previously coached on the defensive side when Jackson was in Tennessee.

York election 2024: Voters to decide plastics ban, Airbnb rules and more

YORK, Maine — A single-use plastics ban, rules for short-term rentals like the ones on Airbnb, and a new athletic complex are among the issues voters will decide at the May 18 referendum.

Sixty-six articles are on the ballot, including the proposed municipal and school budgets, capital projects, and other ordinance amendments.

Single-use plastics ban proposed by York High School students

Plastic forks, knives, containers and other disposable items will be banned from restaurants in York if voters approve a proposed single-use plastics ban .

The ordinance was brought forth by a group of York High School students and sent to the ballot with a 5-0 vote by the Selectboard.

The ordinance would prohibit plastic straws, stir sticks, and utensils at stores, restaurants, coffee/tea shops, cafeterias, caterers, food delivery services, or town-sponsored events. Health-care facilities are excluded.

The town's code enforcement officer would enforce the ordinance, with a $100 fine for the first violation. A second offense would result in a $200 fine, and a third offense $500.

This was the second attempt by the teens to get an ordinance on the ballot . Last year, the Selectboard asked the group to continue working on it, so it was more palatable for business owners who opposed the proposed ordinance.

The teens worked on a committee with business owners from the community to hammer out an ordinance both groups could agree on. The ban originally included banning cups and lids, for example, but that provision was removed due to feedback from businesses.

“I think it’s a small step in the right direction for our community,” said Caitlynn Ramsey, whose family owns and runs the Anchorage Inn.

York divided? Short-term rental ordinance regulating Airbnbs sparks dueling campaigns

Regulations for short-term rentals like Airbnb on the ballot

Short-term rentals have been at York Beach for more than a century. The town has never approved regulations for the rentals, however.

The Selectboard put forth the short-term rental ordinance in response to complaints from the York Harbor section of town. The proposal would require rental owners to pay a fee and register every three years to undergo an inspection of their homes. The proposed ordinance also includes occupancy limits and prohibits the use of firepits.

Owners of the rentals say the ordinance would threaten their industry. A group of opponents to the ordinance have started a campaign putting up "No on 64" signs around town. They also created the website  voteno64.com , outlining why the ordinance would be “bad for York.”

Some rental owners said they have concerns with the inspection of homes, noting many rentals have old construction and would be costly to upgrade.

“These are not people that are just from away,” said Realtor Greg Gosselin who supports the campaign against the ordinance. “This is about property rights from my perspective.”

Residents supporting the ordinance say short-term rentals have become more common in residential areas with websites like Airbnb and need regulation. Several have started their own campaign, posting "Vote yes 64" signs around town.

Kirk Minnick, who supports the ordinance, said he is concerned about the growing number of homes in his neighborhood near York Harbor that are now rentals. He said the ordinance is not as strict as he would like compared to other communities, where there are limits on the total allowed rentals.

“There are many that are more restrictive,” Minnick said. “I really think it’s a balanced approach.”

York election 2024: New candidates, key issues in School Committee race

School Department seeks approval for new athletic complex

Voters will be asked to approve a $6.06 million construction of a new athletic complex at York High School, most of which would be funded by taxpayers.

The project would replace the current grass field with one made of turf and would include a new track, bleachers, LED lighting and updated scoreboards.

The existing track and field had been used for decades, and school officials say it’s time to replace it.

“What people in York tell me is it’s probably one of the worst fields in York County,” York Superintendent Tim Doak said earlier this year. “It’s done its time.”

Residents are being asked to approve a $3.75 million bond for the project paid back over 15 years at an interest rate of 5%. That would result in a total cost including debt service of $5.25 million. The rest of the project would be funded through $1.25 million from the school fund balance and $1.06 million in fundraising, according to the article.

York Selectboard race: Allen challenges incumbents in wake of husband's death

Sewer extension aims to improve environment, economic viability of Route 1

A major sewer extension project is being envisioned to run from Spur Road to Old Post Road. Voters will be asked to approve a portion of that project running up to Donica Road that would cost $3.8 million.

Selectboard members said earlier last year the project was designed to address flooding, which has caused runoff of sewage into the Little River.

Town officials also say the sewer extension will improve the economic viability of the Route 1 corridor in York. Currently, businesses like Eldredge Lumber and Anthony’s Food Shop rely on septic systems. The first phase of the extension, if approved, would stop in the area of Anthony’s.

The entire project to Old Post Road was estimated last year at $11.5 million funded by tax dollars, sewer ratepayers, and Congressional funds earmarked by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. Joseph said the project on the ballot is expected to cost voters up to $1 million in bonds paid off by tax dollars and $500,000 of the town’s fund balance, as well as through federal grants and the sewer district.

Letters: York voters sound off on May 18 election, short-term rental ordinance

Town and schools see costs rise due to inflation, contracts

Town Manager Peter Joseph said this year’s proposed municipal operating budget of $29.9 million was intended to keep costs from rising too much for taxpayers. Residents will shoulder $21,364,257 of that, with the rest covered by other revenue sources.

Major capital projects, new positions and programs were left off the table to keep costs down, Joseph said. Inflation and contractual obligations made it difficult to keep costs low, and the budget he said rose 4.2%.

Personnel-related increased costs are due to four union contracts, which saw raises and cost of living increases. Health insurance premiums also went up 6% this year, which is roughly double what the town has seen in the past three years.

“Call it a maintenance budget,” Joseph said. “Kind of trying to control those costs. Even then, it was difficult to bring it under control.”

The School Department is seeking a systemwide budget of $44.38 million, which is an increase of 10.74% from last year.

“Schools are realizing substantial changes in the expenditures for fixed costs such as heating and electricity,” Superintendent Tim Doak wrote in a letter to voters in the 2024 Voters Guide.

Other reasons for the increase include liability insurance, worker compensation, health insurance, salaries and benefits due to a recently approved teacher’s contract. Those costs make up 85% of all school budgets, Doak said.

Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky unveiled Airbnb's 2024 Summer Release on Wednesday

Airbnb is addressing concerns from customers complaining about the costs compared to hotels.

The company was started in 2008, advertising itself with its original tagline as “a cheap, affordable alternative to a hotel.”

However, Airbnb users have become increasingly frustrated with rising prices — especially when the total spikes due to cleaning and other fees.

CEO Brian Chesky

In response to the growing irritation, CEO Brian Chesky addressed the complaints on an earnings call on Wednesday, according to Business Insider.

“A year and a half ago, we noticed that, you know, there was a lot of concern about Airbnb prices increasing,” Chesky said before divulging the ways the company has tried to remain an affordable travel option.

Chesky noted that the site now allows customers to view a full price breakdown including service fees, discounts, and taxes before booking.

He also shared that Airbnb integrated a tool that allows hosts to compare their listings with others to stay updated on the average prices of similar booked and unbooked listings, including all fees charged.

Chesky claimed that the tool has been widely used and pushed 300,000 hosts to remove or lower their cleaning fees — which seemed to be customers’ biggest gripe.

He also highlighted the discounts that the site has begun offering for guests with longer stays.

Chesky claimed that over two-thirds of hosts offer a monthly or weekly discount as nearly half of the nights booked are for stays that last a week or longer.

Woman using Airbnb

Due to all of these changes, Chesky shared that Airbnb listing prices are down from where they were a year ago, while hotel prices continue to climb.

“I think that trend line is going to continue, given all of our efforts,” Chesky said.

As the company continues to make changes to appease customers, they recently announced an array of exotic experiences from a stay in a Paris museum to the house in “Up” — some of which are free.

Chesky said the company will invite people to fill out a profile and explain why they want one of the listings, and Airbnb will pick about 4,000 winners over the course of the year. He said winners will be able to book the featured properties or events for free or at prices under $100.

However, some Airbnb options are still questionable and shockingly priced .

In January, an Airbnb listing for an $85 (£68) a night tent inside a London home went viral and inspired outrage for its meager offerings and exorbitant cost.

It was promptly removed but has freshly returned for an increased price of $100 (£80) a night, or more than $2,800 a month (and that’s before a $17-plus daily service fee).

A man in a paisley button-up shirt stands outside, with a large R.V. vehicle visible behind him and a few white flowers in close-up in front of him.

He Sang ‘What a Fool Believes.’ But Michael McDonald Is in on the Joke.

The singer and songwriter with a silky-smooth voice has written a memoir with Paul Reiser that recounts his story of pain and redemption with dashes of humor.

The voice of Michael McDonald has been compared to velvet , silk and sandpaper , melted chocolate and last year, by a besotted 11-year-old girl, an angel . He has harmonized with the best in the business. But his latest duet might cause even the most Botoxed foreheads of Hollywood to furrow.

“How you like us so far?” joked Paul Reiser, the actor and comedian, from one corner of a squishy sofa in McDonald’s Santa Barbara, Calif., aerie on a recent Tuesday morning. He was there to talk about the singer’s memoir, which they wrote together and will be published by Dey Street Books on May 21.

In the other corner, emanating the equanimity that’s as beloved as his baritone, was the man whose 50-plus-year career has included backup vocals for Steely Dan, Elton John , El DeBarge , Toto , Bonnie Raitt and on and on — backup so extensive and distinctive it’s inspired playlists on Apple Music and Spotify . He was wearing a paisley-patterned shirt, black trousers and, as one might expect of an angel who must tread this cursed Earth, puffy Hoka sneakers .

McDonald, 72, has also spent decades in the spotlight, albeit sidlingly, often with his famous blue eyes shut . (“Singing is such an intimate act,” he explains in the book, “and like kissing, it does no real good to see what the other person is doing.”) He led the Doobie Brothers in various iterations with his gospel-inflected keyboard style; released nine solo studio albums traversing multiple genres and continues to make live appearances at venues from Coachella to the Carlyle .

A man in a black shirt and dark pants stands a few feet behind a man in a paisley shirt with a white beard, both outside in a garden near a house with an angled roof.

The book is titled “What a Fool Believes,” after the Grammy-winning hit McDonald wrote in 1978 with Kenny Loggins, though with some hesitation. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s just too obvious,’” he said. “I wanted it to be something clever and mind-provoking, and I couldn’t really think of anything because, you know, I have a problem provoking my own mind.”

He was convinced by Reiser, who among many other projects wrote the best-selling books “Couplehood” and “Babyhood” in the 1990s, and a follow-up, “Familyhood,” in 2011.

“I mean, how lucky am I?” McDonald said.

“Awwww,” Reiser said. But seriously: “He’s very introspective, which you don’t see at first and then you go, ‘Oh, this guy is deeper than you think.’” A beat. “Not that I thought you were shallow!”

As if in a marathon therapy session, they plunged together back to the past. McDonald grew up Irish Catholic, bracketed by two sisters in a suburb of St. Louis. His father was a streetcar driver and ex-Marine, a teetotaler with an eye for the ladies and a beautiful singing voice. His mother worked in a trading stamps store and had a weakness for pep pills. The marriage didn’t last.

He had an Aunt Mame with a Victrola from which, at age 5, he learned to imitate Mario Lanza warbling “ Love is a Many-Splendored Thing ”; an Aunt Bitsy who introduced him to Rodgers and Hammerstein; and an Aunt Ann Catherine whose record collection included, revelatorily, Ray Charles. Burt Bacharach was a big influence, too. Beatles-wise, he gravitated more toward McCartney than Lennon.

“I always related to him,” McDonald said, “because I could sense from him that he heard a lot of the same music I heard — that kind of barroom, Tin Pan Alley chord progression.”

In one devastating passage, McDonald writes of getting his girlfriend pregnant in eighth grade and biking over to confront her parents, who insisted, along with his own, that she give the baby up for adoption. Too young to sort through this emotional wreckage, he steered away. “Disappearing became my MO,” he writes. “Distancing myself from whatever it was that might require accountability.”

He dropped out of high school and joined a series of colorful-sounding bands — the Majestics, the Sheratons, the Delrays, the Guild, the Blue. Old ballrooms; natty threads. Beer and marijuana became staples, and later, after he moved to Los Angeles and began breaking into the big time, cocaine.

Referred to Steely Dan by the drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1973, he “came to rehearsal a few days later and knocked everyone out,” Donald Fagen, the band’s surviving founder, wrote in an email. “There was a serious discussion about whether he should replace me as the lead singer, which would have been my personal preference. But, for some dumb reason, I was voted down. I didn’t insist, and I’ve regretted it ever since. I mean, here’s this monster singer and musician, and he’s also really funny and a sweetheart of a guy. What’s not to like?”

Patti LaBelle called about recording “ On My Own ” (1986) with McDonald, after a solo version went sour. “I said, ‘The person I would love to sing it with is quiet, beautiful Michael,’” she remembered. Recently they crooned it together on a jazz cruise on the Norwegian Pearl where, she said, he confessed nerves beforehand; when he emerged onstage, the crowd went bananas. “He’s one of a kind. He comes out whispering and then — all this power. It’s like he doesn’t even open his mouth, he’s just so laid back.”

Indeed, so constitutionally low-key is McDonald that Loggins, with whom he also composed “ This is It ” and “ I Gotta Try, ” and who released his own memoir, “ Still Alright ,” in 2022, didn’t even know his old collaborator is about to join him on the bookshelves.

On the phone, Loggins remembered the first time he heard McDonald in the Doobies’ “ Livin’ on the Fault Line .” “I just felt like, ‘Oh, this is going to be a major American voice,’” he said. “He kind of goes into a trance when we write, and if I say ‘play it again,’ he won’t remember, so I have to record all the time. We have completely different styles vocally, but blend really well. It’s not logical.”

In 2005, the duo, along with Hall and Oates, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steve Perry and others, were affectionately spoofed in J.D. Ryznar’s web series, “ Yacht Rock .” A strain of the much-maligned catchall “adult contemporary” category was suddenly rebranded as “smooth music”: gleaming with high production values and a general mellifluence; the polar opposite of punk. McDonald was portrayed as the genre’s earnest common denominator: its anchor, its intergenerational secret sauce, who stumbles out of fashion and then rises again when “ I Keep Forgettin ’” is sampled by Warren G in 1994.

McDonald compared the yacht-rock phenomenon to oldies radio. “Even though I was a little ambivalent about both, at first, they turned out to be the two best things that ever happened to us from the ’70s,” he said, “because we kept getting airplay.”

This wasn’t his first time as a figure of comedy. In 1981, in an SCTV sketch, Rick Moranis portrayed McDonald driving intently down a highway in a convertible to clap on headphones and sing bits of backup for Cross’s “Ride Like the Wind” before rushing off to his next gig. McDonald contributed a song to the 1999 “South Park” movie and sang at a fictional “30 Rock” benefit . In “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), an electronics-store manager played by Jane Lynch is excoriated by an employee for broadcasting a McDonald concert video ad nauseam. (“If I have to hear ‘ Yah Mo B There ’ one more time I’m going to yah mo burn this place to the ground!”) And in 2013 Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake donned silver McDonald wigs to sing “ Row, Row, Row Your Boat ” with him.

We have his current writing partner to thank, or blame, for the chapter title “Doobie or Not Doobie, That Is the Question.” Reiser, an accomplished musician himself who can sit down at the Yamaha and spontaneously ripple off a Rachmaninoff concerto, first encountered McDonald performing during an event at a neighbor’s house. “And in a surge of moxie, I went, ‘I live literally next door, and I got a music studio with two pianos that I put in just in case this ever happened,’” Reiser recalled. “Would you like to come over?’”

A jam session ensued. A friendship developed. Then the pandemic descended. McDonald thought that during lockdown he might apply himself with renewed vigor to his painting hobby . Reiser had another idea. “He’s the only reason the book exists, as far as I know,” McDonald said. “Putting one foot in front of the other was never my strong suit, on my own power. By myself, I become like a blob.”

McDonald’s wife, the singer Amy Holland, wandered briefly into their living room, which is large, cozy and barnlike, with plenty of blankets and candles and a banjo mounted on the wall bearing the visage of her mother, Verna Sherrill Boersma, who did a hillbilly routine as Esmereldy in the 1940s and resembled …. was it Bette Davis? “Celeste Holm,” McDonald said.

He and Holland were married in 1983, with David Pack, the lead singer of Ambrosia performing “Biggest Part of Me” at the reception. They have two adult children, a submissive golden retriever, and a possessive Chihuahua who sleeps in between the couple.

One of their previous pooches cringed at his singing, McDonald noted, and would try to pry his master’s hands off the piano keys every time he played.

“Everyone’s a critic,” Reiser said.

Working with McDonald, he said, was often just a process of having him slow down and fill out anecdotes that, to him, seemed like no big deal — Steely Dan partying in the penthouse of a London hotel, for one. “I’m going, ‘That’s like a Fellini movie!’” One chapter is devoted to an extended bender with the band’s co-founder, Walter Becker , who died in 2017; another features an unintentional acid trip. ( David Gest also makes an appearance.)

“I remember looking to the guys who seem to manage it well — guys who did a little of this and did a little of that but didn’t have a problem like I suspect that I already did,” McDonald said. “Their whole thing was ‘You just got to manage it — you can’t overdo it, man.’” He paused. “And every one of those guys, to a man, is gone.”

Sober since the mid-80s — he said his current vices are “food and sloth” — McDonald is not only still here, but discreetly ubiquitous.

Forget about velvet and silk: The more you read and think and listen, the more his voice seems like a connecting thread running through America’s popular-music tapestry that, if pulled, might unravel the whole thing — or at least, leave a significant, unmendable hole.

And yet, he said, “to this day I keep expecting the doors to fly open and the impostor police to come and grab me and take me out.”
