The weather cleared up just as we departed for the Marina, which made our view from the top deck look amazing. The staff was very friendly, and there wasn't a single moment where we had to ask "can we get some help?" because they were all mind readers and knew exactly when to come by. The guitarist on board was also incredible; I never knew a slow jazz version of Low Rider was something I needed, but now it's all that I want. Thank you for such an incredible experience and I can't wait to come back! Read more Written January 17, 2024

My wife and I recently spent a week escaping the Phoenix heat at the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach. Of all our excursions from Long Beach to Marina del Rey, this cruise was without a doubt, our favorite. The entire crew were very accommodating, views were awesome and the food was outstanding. • biancasD156LX 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun, relaxed experience. Very cute couple hours on the water. Boarding the ship was straight forward and it was pretty cool to see quite a few people on board when we arrived. Champagne and alcohol-free cider were served as soon as we boarded and the ship took off right on time. Simple decor, but to be honest it was totally fine-- there was some simple live music, too. But the service really stood out and the champagne was consistently served-- truly bottomless. As for the excursion, a little bit disappointing to not go out into the open water, but we did do a solid lap around the marina. The buffet was served halfway through and the spread was generally ok; didn't seem as if they were using enough heating trays so there were some things which were cold. But there were plenty of options, though Vegetarians may have less to work with. Wrapped up the cruise with shout outs to anniversaries, birthdays, and special events, and overall had a good time. Would recommend for families and friends groups who just want to enjoy bottomless mimosas on the water for a couple hours. Would definitely do it again with family. Read more Written June 12, 2023

Your guide to Los Angeles

The local subway and light rail system is being revamped and extended to relieve the city's infamous traffic situation. Renting your own wheels is a great option for visiting areas still in need of better public transportation. Meanwhile, many locals opt for Uber and Lyft to enjoy cross-town nightlife without having to worry about a DD.

Los Angeles is a city of perpetual summertime, with bucket-loads of sunshine year round. All the same, some times of year make for a more pleasant visit than others. Spring and fall have more moderate temperatures than the sweltering summer months. Plus, these seasons offer the added bonus of ducking the summer crowds. In fall, you'll get to see the city dressed up for Halloween, and attend the spooktacular events that go along with that.

One of the great advantages of heading off to a sunny destination is that you don't need to bring much with you. There are a few non-negotiable items you'll definitely want in your suitcase though:

  • Sunglasses: If you're not wearing cool shades, are you even really in Los Angeles? Pack your flashiest pair and prepare to feel summery to the max.
  • A swimsuit: A trip to the beach is more or less compulsory, so bring at least one swimsuit and strut your stuff on the sand alongside the locals.
  • Sunscreen: Yes, it's a necessity. Yes, even in the winter. The Los Angeles look is golden-brown, not crispy and red, so keep yourself protected.

Set sail on Lake Shasta for this North State summer dining favorite

yacht dinner cruise los angeles

Matthew Doyle had an idea 21 years ago: Offer dinner cruises on Lake Shasta at sunset, serving meals made from locally sourced ingredients.

The former Air Force mechanic worked for Lake Shasta Caverns, fixing and maintaining boats and other equipment, he said.

At that time, the caverns and Lake Shasta touring agency occasionally took business associates and staff out onto the lake on their boats for dinner and to watch the sun go down. But there were no commercial dinner cruises on the lake. “I thought, ‘what a missed opportunity,’” Doyle said.

When he became general manager in 2003, Doyle pitched the idea to Bay Area residents and Lake Shasta Caverns tour owners Patty and John Winther. At the time, they were a bit skeptical, but gave him the go ahead, Doyle said.

2024 marks the 19th season Lake Shasta Dinner Cruises will bring guests out onto the lake for a meal and a chance to watch the sun set over the mountains.

Guests board a patio boat for each two-hour cruise and sit family style, with eight to 10 people to a table. Then a smaller boat with a kitchen pulls up alongside the dining boat to serve guests their meal — an all-you-can-eat buffet with tri-tip, chicken and shrimp entrees. Sides include potato salad, several fresh green salads, desserts and non-alcoholic drinks.

Staff buy as much of the food as possible from local sources, Doyle said. Meat is from R&R Quality Meats & Seafood and most produce comes from the Shasta Lake Farmers Market.

The evening includes a guided tour with information about lake levels, wildlife and the history of Lake Shasta. “It was second nature to us” to add a guided tour to the dinner cruise, Doyle said, because the business already hires guides for the cavern tours.

But unlike the cavern tours, which include tromping up and down approximately 650 stairs, people with mobility issues can attend the dinner cruise. “Our boats are designed for wheelchair access,” Doyle said.

There’s a shuttle to bring people to the boat if they can’t comfortably walk from the parking lot, said Gail Yulich, who took her first Lake Shasta dinner cruise on May 11, the opening weekend of the 2024 season.

“The lake was beautiful; very smooth. The service was fabulous and the staff was friendly,” said Yulich, who attended other dinner cruises while living in Salinas before moving to the North State in October 2023.

Dinner is served about an hour into the cruise, she said.

Her only complaint: “It was too short.” She wishes it lasted three hours instead of two, said Yulich, who booked another Lake Shasta dinner cruise in July for herself and family after she disembarked.

In 2023, about 2,100 people booked their dinner cruises, including private bookings, Doyle said.

Friday and Saturday night dinner cruises serve up to 40 guests per night. Private bookings for weddings, birthdays and other parties accommodate up to 60 people per cruise, according to Doyle.

Bookings fill up fast in summer, usually a month in advance, he said, so people should book a spot as soon as they know their preferred sail date.

Former Shasta Lake vice mayor plans to snowboard into Heaven

During his youth in Los Angeles, Doyle grew up a landlubber ― but not by choice.

“I wanted a boat. My parents wouldn’t put out the dough,” he said, laughing.

It might have been for the better, considering he liked taking engines apart. As a kid, he said was always fascinated with motors and “sticking things into outlets that shouldn’t go in there."

After graduating from Saugus High School in 1994, Doyle said his happy memories of visiting Lake Shasta as a child made him decide to settle in Bella Vista.

Doyle took a job as Lake Shasta Caverns mechanic after a stint in the Air Force. He said: “This was my first civilian job."

The reservist went back into the military nine months later, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After leaving the miliary in 2003, the Winthers hired him as their general manager, Doyle said.

In addition to managing cruises and cavern tours, Doyle served on the Shasta Lake City Council from 2021 to 2022 and was the city’s vice mayor in 2022.

Serving in politics is a bit like boating, he said: “You have to navigate rough waters and do a lot of preplanning.”

Summer tours and cruises keep Doyle hopping, but in winter ― when not working on cavern tours ― he spends his free time fishing and doing his favorite sport: Snowboarding.

“I plan to slide into Heaven sideways” on a snowboard, he said.

For now, Doyle and cruise chef Jeff Curry are cooking up ideas for possible taco or spaghetti night cruises. They may also resurrect their Luau on the Lake, a dinner cruise with a Hawaiian theme and menu, Doyle said.

May 30 is the 60th anniversary of Lake Shasta Caverns tours, started in 1964. But Doyle said he plans to hold off celebrating until later this summer, when the season gets busier. At that time, Doyle said staff may do special lantern tours in the caverns and offer live music during dinner cruises.

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: ship that inspired ‘love boat’ sinks.

yacht dinner cruise los angeles

The vessel, which draws 12 feet, is currently stable and resting in the mud while the cause is being investigated and plans are made to raise it.

Over the years, the ship, now named Aurora, spent time in various berths in Long Beach and Los Angeles harbors, and many remember its days anchored off the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.

The 293-foot ship has gone by at least nine different names. It was a Bond girl, inspired a television series and had a quick affair with an Arab airline executive.

The ship was also the first of many “Love Boats” cited in the book by Jeraldine Saunders.

Built in 1955, the small ship was launched as the Wappen Von Hamburg, and was designed to ferry up to 1,600 passengers between Germany and Denmark. Wappen Von Hamburg was sold to the Greek Nomikos Line in 1960, which refit and renamed it the Delos.

The boat also featured as a Spectre yacht in the 1963 James Bond movie “From Russia with Love.”

The ship then headed to Alaska in 1967, when Westours purchased it and renamed it the Polar Star. Soon after, Westours was sold to Holland America Lines in 1970 and the Polar Star was transferred to West Lines. That’s when the ship was renamed the Pacific Star.

The ship was sold to Donald Ferguson’s Cruises of Panama and renamed the Xanadu in 1972. Xanadu’s next failed venture was as a floating exhibition and trade fair ship, when in 1985 it was purchased by a well-meaning Los Angeles company and renamed Expex.

In limbo, Expex spent several years during the 1980s at anchor off the Belmont Pier with a 40-foot container atop its stern until its owner gave up on the ship.

Next, the chronically jilted ship found religion. Expex was sold to Friendships, a Wilmington organization that renamed it Faithful and planned to restore it as a Christian relief ship service.

The Friendships organization used the ship for dockside living for almost 100 homeless Christians.

Florida resident Dr. James Mitchell then purchased the ship in 1991 and planned to convert the ship into a children’s hospital ship for use in South America. Instead, the ship sat at the Southwest Marine shipyard at Terminal Island.

Mitchell sold Faithful to a Delaware corporation in 2005 called Al Boraq Aviation, which towed the ship to Alameda to be refurbished as a private luxury yacht.

The ship ended up in the Sacramento River Delta and was about to be scrapped when Christopher Willson acquired it via a Craigslist transaction and renamed it Aurora. After a short stint in a berth directly across from AT&T Park in San Francisco at Pier 38, the ship returned to the delta.

I made multiple overnight visits to the ship over the years as the owners at the time, Chris Willson and Jin Li, were quietly nursing it back to health. Last year, they sold the vessel and moved out of state.

The 5 best nyc dinner cruises for food & views.

These dinner cruises provide some of the best views of Manhattan.

The Best NYC Dinner Cruises

Friends enjoying a La Barca Cantina dinner cruise.

Courtesy of La Barca Cantina

When you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks. The solution? A boat ride. A breezy sail in New York Harbor can feature everything from an elegant dinner to a live jazz band to tacos and tequila. Read on to discover the top-rated New York City dinner cruise options as determined by travel expert opinion and recent reviews.

City Cruises New York Bateaux Premier Dinner Cruise

Price: From $144 Duration: 3 hours Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.

Climbing aboard the Bateaux feels like stepping into a greenhouse, with its glass-enclosed structure and water views in every direction. There are no bad seats on this boat, but as an upgrade you can reserve a window table for the best views of the Hudson River, the East River and the New York Harbor. This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).

The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise

Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.

Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.

After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.

Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.

La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina dinner cruise with lights on boat at night.

Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.

La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise

Live jazz trio performing for the Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise on the Manhattan II yacht in the summer.

Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line

Price: From $108 Duration: 1.5 hours Standout perk: A jazz trio typically featuring a sax, keyboard and drums plays live on board.

Listen to jazz standards aboard a 1920s-style yacht with this fun sightseeing cruise departing from Pier 62 in Chelsea Piers. Choose between kicking back in the climate-controlled cabin or on the open-air deck throughout this evening cruise, which includes views of Manhattan landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Live music is played outside on the deck or inside the salon, depending on the season (and the boat, Manhattan or Manhattan II).

While this cruise doesn't offer dinner, one complimentary alcoholic beverage is included, and a cash bar offers additional drinks and snacks. Listen to music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more as you sail past the twinkling Manhattan skyline. Those traveling in a group should keep in mind: Tickets are slightly discounted for groups of 4 to 16.

Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $54 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.

When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.

Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.

Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.
