  • The Below Deck franchise features a variety of charter guests who vacation on luxurious yachts, some pleasant and others difficult to deal with.
  • Memorable charter guests include an American Idol alum, a disruptive lawyer, an adult film star, and a musician who became a party animal.
  • The crew members' main goal is to ensure the charter guests have a great time on the yacht, catering to their needs and avoiding complaints or mishaps.

The Below Deck franchise has welcomed many iconic charter guests on the show over the years, and one of them was even an American Idol alum. Below Deck premiered on Bravo in 2013, and has since added four spinoffs to its roster; Below Deck Mediterranean, Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Adventure. Each Below Deck spinoff is very similar, and centers around a group of crew members who live and work aboard a yacht together.

Every spinoff in the Below Deck franchise features charter guests who vacation on a yacht for the trip of a lifetime, whether they're sailing around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Great Barrier Reef, or even the waters of Norway. The guests send the crew members a preference sheet beforehand to make sure their needs are tended to during their time on board. Some Below Deck charter guests are pleasant , while others are very difficult to deal with. The main goal for the crew members is to make sure the charter guests have the best time on the yacht, without any complaints or mishaps.

Frank Fay - Below Deck Mediterranean Season 7

Frank Fay was a memorable charter guest on Below Deck Med season 7, and was most known for catching the attention of third stew Kyle Viljoen. When Frank came aboard the motoryacht Home for his charter, Kyle was immediately attracted to him, especially his smile. Kyle continued to flirt with Frank throughout his time on board, even though he knew he would lose his job. The third stew did eventually share a kiss with the charter guest, but was only called out by Captain Sandy Yawn instead of being fired altogether.

Justin Guarini - Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4

American Idol season 1 runner-up Justin Guarini made an unexpected reality TV appearance as a charter guest on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. Justin came on the charter as a friend of the primary guest, Kim. On the Parsifal III, the popular celebrity made his mark by spilling his drink on the boat's staircase, and complimenting Chef Ileisha Dell's cuisine by calling it " out of this world ." Justin's group of charter guests made Below Deck history when they invited the crew members to eat dinner with them.

Erica Rose - Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 3 & 4

Erica Rose was a difficult charter guest who was on Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 3 and 4. This wasn't Erica's first reality TV stint, as she previously appeared on The Bachelor season 9 and Bachelor Pad season 2 and 3. The lawyer booked a charter on the yacht with a group of friends who were disruptive to the crew members. Erica and her husband Charles Sanders are most known for giving the Parsifal III crew one of the lowest tips at $6,500. Charles also complained about Chef Marcos Spaziani's food throughout the whole charter, which aggravated the crew.

Laura Desiree - Below Deck Down Under Season 2

Laura Desiree joined Captain Jason Chambers and the rest of the crew aboard the Northern Sun on Below Deck Down Under season 2. The primary charter guest was known for her inappropriate behavior on the yacht, which made crew members like Chief Stew Aesha Scott uncomfortable. Laura was a very demanding charter guest, whether she was recruiting deckhand Culver Bradbury to do piggyback fights topless, or being covered in chocolate by Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph while laying across the dessert table during a " big gay brunch. " The adult film star still had a great time on board, despite her unusual requests for the crew.

Roy Orbison Jr - Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 & 6

Roy Orbison Jr. was a charter guest on Below Deck Med seasons 5 and 6, and caused a lot of drama on the show. The musician enjoyed a luxury vacation around the Mediterranean with his family and friends, who seemed to be the calmest guests in the franchise on Below Deck Med season 5. However, when Roy returned for Below Deck Med season 6 , he became more comfortable and unleashed his inner party animal.

Roy drank a lot during his charter on Below Deck Med season 6, and took part in various activities on the boat such as going on the slide and indulging the meals prepared by the chef. During one of the dinners, Roy was so drunk that he was slurring his words, and his wife had to ask him to leave the table and go to sleep. He also peed all over one of the toilets, leaving third stew Courtney Veale to clean up his mess. It's safe to say that Roy made his mark after appearing on Below Deck Med .

Timothy Sykes - Below Deck Season 2

Timothy Sykes met Captain Lee Rosbach and his crew aboard motoryacht Ohana on Below Deck season 2. At the time, he was called one of the worst charter guests in Below Deck history, long before other people stole the title from him. The CEO constantly complained about the boat's Wi-Fi situation, and wanted Chef Ben Robinson to make a molecular gastronomy dinner. The meal impressed everyone but his much-younger girlfriend, who asked the chef to make her a quesadilla.

Timothy was upset with the crew for not accommodating his needs throughout the charter by not having the correct Wi-Fi connection on board so he and his employees can work. At the end of the charter, he even removed some of the tip money in front of the crew, taking $5K away from a total of $22K. Since his Below Deck episodes aired, Timothy claimed that some of his scenes on the show were fake, and said producers made him look bad.

Barrie & Tony Drewitt Barlow - Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 2 as charter guests. The former couple sailed aboard the Parsifal III with their five children, along with Barrie’s current fiance Scott, and Tony’s boyfriend Brent. On the show, Barrie didn't get along with Captain Glenn Shephard. Barrie seemed to be attached to his phone instead of talking to Captain Glenn, which made the crew member tell him to put it away. This was offensive to Barrie, since he was the one paying for the trip. Overall, the Below Deck charter guest still had a great time on the yacht.

Did Barrie Drewitt Barlow and Scott Hutchinson get married? Inside 'Below Deck' guests' romantic proposal

One of the UK's first gay dads, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, ended his 32-year-long relationship with husband Tony Drewitt-Barlow after he met Scott R Hutchinson. The couple was in a relationship for a few years until they went on a vacation in Europe. Barrie and his family of nine were aboard the Parsifal III when he decided to surprise Scott by popping the question. It was easily one of the most romantic setups with flowers strewn across the deck that's lit with candles. Bottles of champagne, good food, and some sailing. In a nutshell, it was perfect. Did Scott say yes? He did but a better question to ask at this point would be is Barrie divorced yet?

Who are Tony and Barrie Drewitt-Barlow? UK's first gay dads on 'Below Deck' run a million-dollar empire

Is Barrie Drewitt-Barlow engaged to Saffron's ex Scott? Truth behind 'Below Deck' star's SHOCKING sex life

Tony and Barrie had decided to split but they are not officially divorced yet. The former couple might be legally together but their paths have diverged. While Barrie is engaged and had recently welcomed a baby girl with Scott via surrogacy, Tony is dating his cancer nurse, Brent. And, it's not awkward between the four of them. Barrie, in a Facebook post , made it clear that he and Tony are in a good space and are in it together. "I’m not sure what the big deal is myself, things don’t always work out in relationships for one reason or another," he wrote and added: "but Tony and I are both very happy about the way things have turned out and regardless of the negativity regarding our relationship, we will both be there for each other through this very difficult time."

Tony and Barrie's firstborn Saffron too has given her blessings even though she dated Scott once. When Barrie and Scott began their relationship, it stung her a bit but she was able to move past it once she saw how happy they were. She even featured in the photo dump Barrie shared on Instagram announcing the Drewitt-Barlow family's appearance on 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht.' "Been holding in the excitement until the official trailer came out for the new season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht to tell you all that the Drewitt-Barlow family are in this season x Scott and I are totally excited to share this amazing trip to Croatia with you all and for you to see our amazing engagement," Barrie posted on the photo-blogging site. ‘Below Deck’ Sailing Yacht Shares Chilling Link To Sunken Morgan Stanley Billionaire’s Boat ‘Bayesian’

‘Below Deck’ Sailing Yacht Shares Chilling Link To Sunken Morgan Stanley Billionaire’s Boat ‘Bayesian’

Much has been made of the tragic events that unfolded earlier this week off the Sicilian coast, with the Morgan Stanley international chairman initially missing before being found dead alongside tech founder Mike Lynch. Adding more intrigue to the tale, a strange link between the sunk Bayesian yacht and hit show Below Deck has been uncovered…

The Italian shipyard Perini Navi, which built the PARSIFAL III — the yacht featured in the popular reality show Below Deck that rammed a pier due to an engine malfunction — is also the maker of the Bayesian , which tragically sank on August 19.

PARSIFAL III Misadventure

Below Deck is an American reality TV series that made its debut in 2013 on Bravo TV . The show, to date, is running on season 11, with a new cast of crews on every luxury superyacht during its chartering season. Their challenges while catering to wealthy guests are depicted on the show. The PARSIFAL III , a 177-foot yacht, suffered a big mishap during an episode of the show’s second Sailing Yacht season which first aired on May 17, 2021.

While trying to maneuver in bad weather, the yacht hit a dock because its engine broke down. In an explanation, Yacht’s Captain Glenn Shephard said:

“I was using a different maneuver mode. And there’s a computer in between the throttles and the propeller that adjusts the load on the engine. Maybe my inputs were too much for the computer and it kind of, I don’t know, froze or didn’t react in the right way. I’m not really 100 percent sure. But I was pushing ahead and it was still moving backwards, which is not normal.”

Some of the wreckage was visible floating in the sea after the accident. Luckily, no serious damage was caused in this crash. Launched in 2005, PARSIFAL III can accommodate up to 12 charter guests in a master suite, two double cabins, and two twin cabins. The yacht also has a Jacuzzi and two Open Bic sailboats for guests to play with.

Not So Lucky

The Bayesian , also created by Perini Navi, was not as lucky. Sailing in a sudden and strong squall that created too much wind and conditions for the yacht to handle, the vessel sank after its mast broke in half off the coast of Sicily near the fishing village of Porticello   in the early hours of Monday.

Of the 22 people on board at the time of the tragedy, 15 were rescued, while six others lost their lives, among them being the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

His daughter Hannah Lynch, 18, is still missing, and rescuers are frantically searching for her. Lynch was a British technology entrepreneur who achieved fame through his software company, Autonomy Corporation, which Hewlett-Packard bought for over $11 billion USD in 2011.

Shinkai: Inside the design journey of the superyacht designed for deep-ocean adventures

With a name meaning "deep sea” in Japanese, the 55-metre Feadship explorer yacht Shinkai is packed with ocean-going accessories including a  7.2-tonne, three-person submarine and Toyota Land Cruiser. Currently turning heads in Hawaii, designer Phillipe Briand breaks down her brief and build...

“Designing explorers – boats with a meaningful purpose – really interests me,” says Philippe Briand , a naval architect whose 30-year career can be traced through the 12,000 or more yachts conceived on his drawing board: a multitude of race-winning custom sailboats, a huge number of cruising yachts from production builders Beneteau and Jeanneau and, latterly, a series of elegant custom superyachts bearing the stamp of his award-winning Vitruvius brand.

So when approached by a superyacht owner with a desire to explore high-latitude waters – not just above the waves, but also beneath – his attention was truly grabbed by the challenge. “This highly experienced client had plenty of ideas as to how he might achieve his goal,” Briand explains, “including the possibility of a ‘submarine yacht’ – an idea that was eventually decided to be just too far ahead of its time.”

The brief eventually evolved into a highly-customised 50-metre explorer, whose prime task was to carry and operate a three-man submarine. “Of course,” Briand continues, “the boat still had to have all the luxury of a superyacht and carry a normal complement of tenders and toys, as well as a Toyota Land Cruiser and an all-electric Jet-Ski, so the 50-metre target size was under pressure from the very start of the design process.” The ‘high latitude’ requirement, including a desire by the owner to transit the Northeast Passage, further added to the complexity.

A 6.3-tonne, U-Boat Worx C-Explorer 3 was eventually selected as the submarine of choice. To allow its deployment in less than perfect sea conditions, a 7.0-tonne crane with an 8-metre reach, with stabilising lines running from the sub to deck winches on the mothership, was identified as the most reliable method of launch and recovery. This would be accomplished as a ‘launch-and-go’ operation with the three passengers boarding the sub before launch.

Breakthrough stabilisation

Then came the issue of the mothership’s stabilisation. “I was not keen on using conventional fin stabilisers,” explains the owner, “because they are rather inefficient at low speed and can be damaged by ice and flotsam, so I suggested that we should investigate the use of gyro-stabilisation, as I knew this is being used successfully in many smaller craft today.”

The technology is not new – Emily Cadwallader’s 136-metre motor yacht Savarona had been fitted with a gyro weighing 50-tonnes in 1931 – but this was never considered a satisfactory solution on larger yachts until recent technological advances, including the operation of the gyro in a vacuum and a tenfold increase in rotational speed to 2,000rpm, prompted its reemergence – but only in boats up to around 30 metres LOA.

The main downside of scaling such technology up to larger vessels is that the gyro installation will occupy a significant volume in the yacht, but for this project there were other considerations. At cruising speed the gyro’s performance is slightly inferior to fins, but, says Briand, “this deficiency can be partially rectified by adding long bilge-boards to the hull”. Going with a gyro would also eliminate ice-vulnerable hull appendages, increase the fuel efficiency of Briand’s already efficient hull form, and provide significant additional stability when launching the submarine and tenders, so it quickly became the most compelling option.

With this choice made, the final hurdle was to identify a manufacturer. “No one had ever built such a large and technologically advanced gyro, and just two manufacturers worldwide had the capability,” explains the owner, “Veem in Australia and GyroMarine in Italy – both of whom satisfied us that they could build what we needed. We eventually chose the Livorno-based GyroMarine for their Active Drive concept that is more attuned to the needs of larger vessels with slower roll rates.”

A custom-built GyroMarine GM600 Active Drive System gyro – at that time the world’s largest active drive system – was selected. This 23-tonne beast is housed within a 3.3m x 2.7m x 2.5m cube and develops an impressive 850kN of angular momentum (a measure of rotor size and speed) that delivers a stabilising torque of 1,000kN m, with peak power consumption of 70kW. “It was a unique experience for us to work with such a passionately interested owner,” says Tony Hands, the technical manager of GyroMarine’s Active Drive technology. “He certainly put us through our paces to create an ideal solution for this very exciting yacht.”

The Toyota Land Cruiser also called for special treatment. “I’ve carried vehicles on previous yachts,” says the owner, “but they rust really badly in salty air.” The answer was to treat the vehicle in the same careful manner as one would an embarked helicopter and store it in a sealed garage.

Finalising the design

With these technical parameters decided, together with identifying the need for six guest suites and generous accommodation for 12 crew, Briand could start design work. His approach was first to concentrate on the stern to locate the submarine, tenders, toys and gyro, to confirm that they could be accommodated within Briand’s slender 50-metre hull with its characteristic steep underwater rise at the stern – an essential element to meet the owner’s demand for fuel-efficiency.

While highly efficient, this hull shape limits the volume available in the stern sections for the internal stowage of tenders and other equipment so, as the design progressed, the yacht’s size not only grew to 55 metres but the decision was also taken to store the submarine on the open aft deck, together with the two tenders and the Land Cruiser. The submarine takes pride of place, centrally positioned in a shallow well at the stern with its huge Palfinger knuckle-boom launching crane on its starboard side. Just forward is the watertight box containing the Land Cruiser, a 5.7-metre SOLAS tender and its launching crane and an 8-metre limousine tender, launched by the sub’s crane. It’s a deck layout that permits sufficient below-deck volume to be allocated to the gyro.

With these items provisionally positioned, it became apparent that the elegant, low-profile design that is the trademark of Vitruvius designs would not provide sufficient volume for spacious accommodation. “I therefore pressed the owner to add an additional ‘owner’s deck’,” explains Briand, “rather than increase the length once again, which would make access to shelter and small harbours more difficult. After much discussion concerning the effect on the yacht’s aesthetics, this was eventually agreed.”

The remainder of the vessel offers all the luxury of a regular superyacht. Below an open observation deck, the uppermost enclosed deck contains the wheelhouse and captain’s cabin, while below is the owner’s deck featuring a full-beam dining room, two impressive suites and his and hers offices that provide panoramic views forward. Two spacious guest suites and two twin-bed children’s suites are located on the main deck together with the main saloon. Excluding the engine and gyro rooms, the crew have the lower deck to themselves, with seven cabins, a large mess room, laundry and galley.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht: Who is Barrie Drewitt-Barlow’s fiancé Scott?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht charter guest Scott Hutchinson is Barrie Drewitt-Barlow's fiance.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans are asking who is Barrie Drewitt-Barlow’s fiancé Scott Hutchinson? The two men got engaged on the Bravo show, which was filmed last summer.

Barrie, and his ex-husband, Tony Drewitt-Barlow, have been making headlines since they became Britain’s first gay dads in 1999. Their lives became even more intriguing when Barrie and Tony divorced.

Who is Barrie Drewitt-Barlow’s fiancé Scott?

Anyone who watched the family on Below Deck Sailing Yacht knows that Scott used to date Barrie and Tony’s daughter, Saffron Drewitt-Barlow.

Saffron has admitted her relationship with Scott was more friendship than romantic. She’s supportive of Barrie and Scott’s relationship, but it hasn’t always been easy. Saffron prefers to live on the opposite side of the house than her dad and ex.

There’s so much more to Scott than a guy who is engaged to his ex-girlfriend’s dad. According to Meaww.com, 27-year-old Scott hails from Harlow, Essex, and he used to work as a stuntman. Scott met Barrie while working on the set of the Fast and Furious 6.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Barrie Drewitt-Barlow (@donbarrie)

Not long after they met, Barrie hired Scott to work as his business assistant. Scott became a shoulder for Barrie to lean on after the family learned Tony’s throat cancer returned in 2018.

Barrie and Scott start a family

Even before Barrie popped the question to Scott on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, they were planning their future together.

The happy couple welcomed their first child, daughter Valentina in September. Scott and baby Valentina are featured all over Barrie’s Instagram feed, revealing the blessings they have been to his life.

Scott and Barrie are already looking to expand their family too. They are reportedly in the process of finding a surrogate to carry their twins. The proud papas want Valentina to be surrounded by siblings growing up just like the rest of the Drewitt-Barlow children.

Although the family is growing in new directions, it doesn’t mean they are growing apart. Barrie insists the group remains one big happy clan. Tony will forever be Valentina’s uncle, as he will be with any of Scott and Barrie’s future children.

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and fiancé Scott Hutchinson are living their best life together with their modern family.

Bravo fans can all agree that the Drewitt-Barlow family has made Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2 so entertaining. Whether you loved them or hated them, the nine-person group was intriguing.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.
