CAPTAIN: Giles Troulan - British Joined Spring 2020 Giles joins ICON with over 20 years’ Captain experience on both private and charter yachts ranging in size from 30 m up to 67 m. Giles is a natural on charter, an excellent motivator, putting all guests at ease in a warm welcoming environment. Giles grew up around the water and sailed extensively from an early age. After leaving school he worked for 5 years on board fast multi hulls and sailing yachts followed by two years diving on the Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. In 1992 he took his first job on board the yacht M/Y Deneb Star and has worked in the super yacht industry ever since. During his career he has cruised extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Indian Ocean, East & West Med, Caribbean and the Red Sea. Giles is an avid scuba diver with a dive master license and keen kite surfer with a love of deep sea fishing. Previous yachts: M/Y Mosaique (50 m), M/Y Lady May (46 m), M/Y Entourage (47 m), M/Y Nassima (50 m). Languages: English

CHEF: Michelle Bonetti – Australian/Swiss Joined Summer 2017 Australian born Michelle is a culinary trained chef well versed in all cuisines. She has worked alongside many Michelin star chefs and has also completed an intensive sushi training course. Joining the yachting industry in early 2015, she went on to win first place at the 2015 Antigua Boat Show Chefs Competition on board M/Y Zeepard. Michelle has spent the last two Med seasons on the 50 m M/Y Mosaique ‘wowing’ guests with her culinary expertise. Prior to joining the yachting industry Michelle was ‘Chef de Partie’ at Print Hall, one of Western Australia’s best restaurants. Michelle’s objective is to satisfy culinary desires, embrace local produce and provide guests with the highest level of cuisine. Michelle has a diploma of business and photography. SOUS CHEF: Mieke Bosman – South African Joined Autumn 2017 Mieke was introduced to yachting in 2016 when she accepted a temp stewardess position on board M/Y Lady Katherine V (61 m). Deciding that this industry was for her, she moved on as stewardess to M/Y Laurel (74 m). Mieke's last two positions have been as stewardess/crew cook which she has thoroughly enjoyed. Mieke moved to M/Y ICON and is enjoying the challenges that the position of Sous Chef brings. Prior to yachting Mieke worked at the high-end restaurant Delaire Graff Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. She also has experience in nannying. When not busy in the galley Mieke enjoys hiking, running and the outdoors. Languages: English

CHIEF STEWARDESS: Michaela Pownall - Croatian Joined Spring 2018 Michaela took a two-year break from yachting to have her first baby. Prior to this she had eight successful seasons on M/Y Mosaique. She is now really happy to be back with Captain Jez and the core crew from Mosaique on M/Y Icon! In addition to her considerable experience in hospitality and yachting, Michaela is a qualified pharmacist, an expert in mixing cocktails and silver service. Along with her experience, her warm and friendly nature makes her the perfect hostess on board, always on hand to anticipate guests’ requirements. Michaela loves to travel, read and is a very good salsa dancer in her spare time. Languages: Croatian, English

CHIEF OFFICER: Mark Lambert – Australian Joined Summer 2017 Australian born Mark is well used to growing up around the sea, having previously worked on Maxi yachts in the Whitsundays, dinghy sailing to national level on 420s and instructing children to sail, as well as becoming a rescue diver. Mark spent five seasons on board M/Y Mosaique, previously working on the busy Med-based charter yacht M/Y Seven Sins as deckhand. Languages: English

2ND OFFICER: Daniel Lambert – Australian Joined Summer 2017 Growing up in the coastal city of Perth in Western Australia, Daniel grew up sailing and having a love for the sea! Since a young age he has competitively raced dinghies, also entering multiple national titles across Australia. It was during this time that he decided to turn a hobby into a career. Daniel enjoys free diving and has also been certified as a diving instructor last year in Asia. In the next five years he wants to progress in the yachting career and improve his underwater videography skills. Languages: English

CHIEF ENGINEER: Zelijko Milanovic – Croatian Joined Winter 2017 Languages: English, Croatian Chief engineer Zelijko grew up in Split and studied marine engineering at university before obtaining his license, then working on container vessels for 3 years before going back to studying and doing his six months mandatory national service. He then worked on offshore vessels. One day he had a phone call which gave him the opportunity to work on M/Y ICON and he has never looked back. Zelijko likes to travel back to Split whenever possible to spend time with his family.

2ND ENGINEER: Ivan Antonic – Croatian Joined Winter 2017 Ivan was raised in Rijeka, Croatia. He started his career as a waiter aboard tourist boats, then joined a cruise ship company as an engineering cadet. After working on cargo vessels for 8 years, he decided to join the world of luxury yachting on board M/Y ICON. Ivan loves basketball, water polo, hiking and cycling. Languages: English, Croatian

ETO: Andrej Jakasa – Croatian Joined Winter 2017 Languages: English, Croatian Originally from Split, Croatia, Andrej has completed a host of electrical engineering and electronics related studies and has accrued almost 10 years of experience in this field on board cruise liners. He joined the super yacht industry on M/Y ICON in October 2017 and understandably has never looked back! Andrej is also an experienced dive instructor, and his interests and hobbies include photography and graphic design. Languages: English, Croatian

BOSUN: George Thatcher – British Joined Summer 2017 George started his yachting career on board M/Y Mosaique and prior to this spent one year on the superyacht Cadetship UKSA, where he gained a clear understanding of the superyacht industry. George was selected for an Oxford Football Scholarship and played for professional academies. He also did a six weeks trial for the Chelsea Football Club and was then offered a scholarship at Reading Academy, but chose the superyacht Cadetship at UKSA to pursue a career at sea. George enjoys water skiing, wake-boarding and rugby. Languages: English

LEAD DECKHAND: Joshua Barton - British Joined Summer 2018 After finishing University in 2016, Josh started his career working in events and later went on to the Royal Marines Young Officer Selection. Deciding that yachting was really his career of choice in early 2018, he started day working on yachts which led to him joining M/Y ICON. He describes himself as an outgoing and ambitious individual with a strong work ethic and hungry to enhance his skill set in the industry. When he’s not busy on board, Josh has a wide range of hobbies, such as sailing, skiing, hiking, fitness & health and photography & travel. Languages: English

2ND STEWARDESS: Lucie Carbuccia - French Joined Spring 2018 Lucie had a memorable three seasons on board M/Y Mosaique, which has drawn her to join M/Y Icon with Captain Jez and the other core crew members. Originally from Corsica, Lucie brings with her a healthy service background, having previously worked in some of the UK’s well-respected boutique hotels. During her two-year break from yachting, she has enjoyed being on stage as a background vocal and recorded in some reputed American recording studios, as well as organizing concerts. Lucie also has a high interest in personal development and has experience in bodywork. Her altruistic personality makes her pay close attention to guests’ enjoyment. As a wine lover, she enjoys representing the “French Touch” on board, as well as being the yacht's official French translator. Languages: French, English

STEWARDESS: Patricija Sostaric - Croatian Joined Summer 2018 Hailing from Split in Croatia, most of Patricija’s working experience started with seasonal jobs in tourism while she was studying management at college. It was through her experiences gained in various bars and high-end hotels that she was introduced to the yachting industry when she was hired on board MY Antelope III (43 m) during a refit period in Croatia. From that point, she was hooked and was determined to take the opportunities further. An easy going, quick learner, who thrives on working in a close environment, Paticija invests effort and energy into all she does. Essex Police marine unit saves storm-hit yacht in distress off coast of Clacton

A yachtsman rescued in heavy seas has praised a police marine unit for coming to his aid, saying: "I feel like my life has been saved."

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday when a storm whipped up unexpectedly off the coast of Clacton.

With his yacht, the Samphire, damaged and taking on water, Mr Harris radioed for help to alert nearby boats and emergency services.

Sgt Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were nearby when they picked up the distress call and found the 40ft yacht near the Gunfleet Sands windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

“When Alex leapt onto the boat and said ‘You’re safe now’ it was such a comfort. I had been scared for my life," said Mr Harris

“The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue – I wasn’t expecting them at all.

“The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.

“I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved.”

“The Essex Police Marine Unit’s top priority is to keep members of our marine communities safe on land and water and a key part of our role is search and rescue," said Sgt Southgate.

“Thankfully, we were out on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the area that day and were able to locate Mr Harris and his partner in time.”

Operation Wave-Breaker runs from April to September each year and tackles anti-social behaviour and promotes water safety.

Putin rattled after Moscow ‘under attack from biggest ever drone strike’

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.

The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’ 

He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.

Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.

The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.

The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.

But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.

It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.

The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.
