Las Vegas billionaire has 2 megayachts docked in Maine at once
by Troy R. Bennett, Bangor Daily News
PORTLAND, Maine ( BDN ) -- The billionaire owner of a megayacht visiting the Portland Harbor this week is so rich he brought along a second megayacht just to house all his expensive toys.
The second vessel, the 217-foot Hodor, was purposely designed to trail the 285-foot Lonian. The Hodor is likely hauling a crew of 20, five smaller boats, an array of jet skis, and a set of four-wheelers for use on land, according to the website Superyacht Fan. The Hodor can reportedly also accommodate a 6-ton helicopter, though none was spotted Wednesday morning.

Both boats, now at Fore Points Marina, are owned by Las Vegas casino tycoon and former Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.
A private, motor-driven pleasure boat longer than 24 meters — or about 80 feet — is usually called a superyacht. But larger vessels over 60 meters — or 196 feet, like Fertitta’s boats — are known as megayachts
Superyacht Fan estimates the Hodor cost $30 million when it was new in 2019 and now costs between $3 million and $5 million to operate and maintain every year. But that astronomical price is a bargain compared to its mothership, the Lonian. The website reckons it was purchased for $160 million in 2018 and costs upwards of $15 million annually.
Fertitta’s pair of ultra-expensive vessels aren’t the only megayachts in town.
Parked at the next slip over is the Cayman Islands-flagged, 242-foot M&EM, which can accommodate 12 guests in six cabins, along with a crew of 19, according to Amels Yachts, the Dutch company which built it in 2022. The M&EM can cruise at 16.5 knots and has a range of about 5,000 nautical miles.

It isn’t clear who owns the M&EM, but according to Vesselfinder, it arrived in Portland on Sept. 1 after being spotted in Portugal on Aug 25.
Also at Fore Points is the relatively small, 166-foot superyacht Sapphire, built in 2009. According to big-boat broker Denison Yachting, the Sapphire had an extensive retrofit in 2019 and can sleep up to 20 guests in seven staterooms. It’s for sale with an asking price of $15 million.

There’s a $30 Million Dollar Superyacht ‘Toy Box’ Visiting Portland, Maine

Over the past several years, Portland, Maine , has become no stranger to visits from superyachts. Some of the most impressive private vessels in the world have come to the waters of Casco Bay, sometimes for a short visit and sometimes for a longer stay.
Nowadays, it takes more than a monster cruise ship or a massive superyacht to perk up residents of Portland. Which is why another unique ship has garnered some attention over the last couple days. It's a superyacht but it's different than many of the others that have visited in the past.
The Hodor is Visiting Portland, Maine
The Hodor is a superyacht shadow vessel, a garage of sorts. That's a nice way of saying that the billionaire that owns it, doesn't spend any significant time on it. According to SuperYachtFan , the Hodor was designed and built to be the ultimate "toy box" for someone with incredible wealth.
The Hodor has its own dedicated crew and several rather incredible features. But what is most noticeable immediately is all the expensive gadgets. Then most obvious of which is the certified helipad and helicopter on the yacht's top deck.
What Hodor Has Inside is Simply Incredible
When people refer to Hodor as a "toy box", they're not just making a joke. According to BOAT International , the superyacht houses some world-class toys inside. The Hodor features a submarine garage fitted perfectly for a real-life submarine for exploration use.
There's also nearly a dozen jet skis, several ATVs, and of course, another boat. Yes, a wildly expensive speedboat housed inside another boat. The inside of the Hodor almost looks as through it's owned by Bruce Wayne, ready to transform into Batman at a moments notice.
The Hodor is also fitted to be a rescue boat of sorts. The superyacht has a decompression chamber as well as a full triage station. It also had a dedicated fuel area in the event that a refill is needed.
Who Owns Hodor?
While superyacht owners typically try to keep their boat ownership secret, Hodor is unquestionably owned by Lorenzo Fertitta. He's the former CEO of the UFC and a well-established billionaire.
Hodor is meant simply as a support vessel for the Lonian , a $160 million dollar powerhouse. While Hodor is fit for all the toys, the Lonian is a nearly 300 foot superyacht designed purely for comfort and luxury.

The ultimate man cave? Inside 66m superyacht shadow boat Hodor
- Superyachts
This cavernous support vessel can carry up to five tenders, as well as jet skis, quad bikes, helicopters and submarines
What do you do when your 87m Feadship can’t fit all your toys on board? Build a 66m shadow boat to carry them of course!
Launched this week by Spanish yard Astilleros Armón and designed by multihull specialist Incat Crowther, Hodor is the latest member of a growing global fleet of superyacht support vessels.
The owner clearly has a need for speed, as the pictures above show an impressive array of rapid toys, from a 56ft chase boat packing four Seven Marine outboards on the transom to what looks like a Fountain 32 Thundercat.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however, as Hodor can also carry a further three tenders, a submarine and a Eurocopter 145, not to mention jet skis and quad bikes galore.

Hodor is no slouch either, with a top speed of 22.5 knots – enough to overtake the mothership so that the 20-strong crew can set up all the toys in the next secluded anchorage via the four built-in davits.
When the owner and his chums tire of charging around at top speed, they can explore underwater, as Hodor has a fully-equipped dive store, complete with Nitrox and O2 compression facilities.

VESSEL REVIEW | Hodor – Super yacht support vessel and reception space
Spain's Astilleros Armón has recently launched and delivered the 66-metre composite catamaran shadow vessel Hodor , designed by Incat Crowther.
Shadow vessels are a new breed of workboats. They are designed to blend in amongst super yachts with their smooth lines and gleaming chromed steel, however their purpose is to reduce crew numbers on the main yacht, allowing room for more guests, whilst also offloading other tasks that interfere with the enjoyment of being on a motor yacht.
Hodor offers large amounts of deck and storage space, flexibility, stability, efficiency and capability. The design offers a stable platform for the safe transfer of guests from helicopter to the mothership, via tenders.
Hodor allows for more luxury space to be available onboard the mothership while offering access to toys on demand. It also gives the crew a separate space to manage the operation and maintenance. The vessel can also act as a reception space for visiting guests, transferring them from helicopters to tenders.
Hodor has been completely customised to carry the specific equipment and supplies to support and enhance the owner's mothership capabilities. The design uses the robust engineering of hulls proven in offshore platform service, such as the Seacor "Crewzer"-class and Incat Crowther's 70-metre fast crewboat class. The hull incorporates a reverse bow, a deadweight capacity of 240 tonnes and a low propeller draught of 3.1 metres.
The platform accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel. This includes five tenders (the largest being 17 metres in length), jet skis, quad bikes, a submarine garage, a helipad, a large complement of crew, staff and support equipment.
The tenders and submarine are flexibly located and can be launched from the upper and main decks. On the upper deck via the two large knuckle boom cranes, and on the main deck via twin beam cranes. A primary feature of the vessel is the the aft lifting platform for the 17-metre chase boat. A portable davit on the fore deck facilitates the launch and recovery of the vessels ROV and can also be used for additional jet ski storage.
The submarine garage is housed in the centre of Hodor . The launching system for this uses air casters to transfer it from the garage to the beam cranes for launching.
Incat Crowther has a number of vessels with fast launch and recovery systems – these existing proven systems were scaled up to the suitable size to allow the chase boat to be launched easily and quickly between the catamaran hulls.
The helipad is a fully-certified and CAP437 compliant for helicopters of six tonnes and up to D-value of 16 metres including the Eurocopter EC145. A large reception room, finished to a yacht standard, sits forward of the helipad, allowing guests to be transferred in comfort between helicopters and tenders.
Incat Crowther found that the catamaran platform lent itself well for helicopter support operations given the increased deck area, in particular the wide beam, and good level of stability.
The port hull shell door, provided for guest access is finished to a yacht standard and directly connected to the guest lounge via a guest staircase. The starboard hull shell door is reserved for crew operations. There is also water access via two stern platforms, should weather conditions require stern boarding.
Dive equipment is fully integrated with compressors, nitrox and oxygen facilities, as well as a hospital with decompression chamber.
Specialised spaces are dedicated for fresh and frozen food storage, additional storage for the mother vessel, waste treatment and general and spares stores.
Propulsion is provided by two main engines, giving a max speed of 22.5 knots, or long-range cruising at 14 knots up to 5,500 nautical miles. The catamaran platform allows fuel savings of around 40 per cent, affording the full vessel range with only 160,000 litres of diesel fuel. The vessel's tankage supplies toys and vehicles with jet fuel, petrol and diesel from dedicated bunker stations.
A complement of 20 crew and staff are comfortably accommodated in a mix of double and twin ILO-compliant staterooms, each with ensuite bathrooms.
The wheelhouse is situated with excellent visibility. Access to electronics systems is simplified with incorporation of a walk-around main helm console and a dedicated MEC.
Fitted with an exhaust cleaning SCR system for IMO Tier 3 and EPA Tier 4 compliance, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced, allowing the design to be more environmentally friendly.
The inherent stability of the catamaran does not require gyro or roll stabilisers whilst at rest. When underway, the vessel pitching motions are reduced by twin Humphree active interceptors on the stern.
A twin anchoring system is provided, which, combined with the widely spaced twin hulls, provides reduced motions whilst at anchor.

As the big yachts go, it was bigger than most
Hodor on the left. See it larger .
Eric Bender, who covers the waterfront, couldn't help but notice the Lonian docked at Commercial Wharf today, because the thing is enormous: It's a 285-foot-long superyacht.
It's so big it has a "garage" to store a smaller, 32-foot long boat for, we guess, those quick trips to little bays that can't handle the craft's draft or wake or something. Or owner (and Las Vegas billionaire) Lorenzo Fertitta , could just get a helicopter to pick him up - and ferry his up to 12 guests - from the yacht's helipad.
Of course, a $160-million yacht that costs $10 million to $15 million a year to operate (with a staff of 27), just isn't enough to contain all the life you need to live, so naturally you go out and buy a separate 217-foot long "support" catamaran (with a staff of 20) to hold another five smaller boats, your jet skis, your quad bikes, your ATVs and your motorcycles - with room left over for your submarine and your other helicopter.
And no, that doesn't sound at all like the sort of ship a Bond villain would use to visit his lair under an active volcano. Fertita, obviously a "Game of Thrones" fan, named it Hodor - and it follows the Lonian around everywhere, just like Hodor did with Bran:
The catamaran design means you never have to wait long for Hodor to open its door:
I love me an Edmund
I love me an Edmund Fitzgerald reference. If I were an actor that’d be my go to if I had to turn on the waterworks.

The first question that comes to my mind when I see such debauchery is how long would it take for the planet to become thoroughly unlivable -carbon emissions and all- if everyone adopted this kind of lifestyle.
If we all emulated Fertitta and his ilk, it would probably be a matter of days, not even weeks. In my esteem these folks rank about as high as pedophile priests and nazis and deserve the same amount of shaming. Why are they considered respectable?

Fortunately, that’s not a lifestyle that almost anyone can adopt.
A study showed that an income of greater than $250k/year brings no further actual happiness. With that in mind, anyone earning more than $250k/year MUST have a ZERO carbon footprint. So this guy needs to start building windfarms immediately to pay for the privileges that harm others.

Fair question... but consider this
how long would it take for the planet to become thoroughly unlivable -carbon emissions and all- if everyone adopted the average American's lifestyle?
AFter all, USA is 14% of CO2 emissions despite only being 4% of the world's population...

In the three minutes of patience I had to look, it seems there is almost a 1:1 ratio of superyachts to container ships, meaning the ever reliable savior of the economy, the American consumer, has some leverage to demand fewer crossings.

mostly designed for the passengers
Many (most?) super/megayachts (and most passenger vessels more generally) are designed to maximize interior volume/layout and views from the inside looking out, so they tend to end up looking like a floating Marriott of sorts.
Much of what makes a boat/ship pleasing to the eye are features that increase seaworthiness, which is largely irrelevant on these yachts as they are really mobile vacation homes that spend the vast majority of their time docked wherever the party is and don't need serious passagemaking ability.
You can see a vivid example of this form-follows-function whenever the QM2 is docked next to a cruise ship at the Black Falcon. You really don't need to know anything about naval architecture to see that they are very different breeds and the aesthetic difference is almost entirely coincidental.
I have voyaged on the QM2 a few times. Just one minor point: The QM2 is an ocean liner. It is designed to make ocean voyages in all sorts of weather and thus has a different design. Most large passenger vessels are cruise ships, not ocean liners.
That's astonishingly large!
By way of context, the Pacific Princess (aka Love Boat) was less than twice as long as this monstrosity.
