Introduction/Why this site

In 2020, I built and sailed an IOM model yacht for the first time.  It was a tortuous journey researching all the information and as a past dinghy world champion, olympic campaigner, yacht skipper and tactician, I wanted to delve deep into the IOM resources to help me on my journey. IOM information is scattered in a fractured manner across the web so it made sense to me to catalogue what I learned, add in my own racing knowledge and experience to that already out there and show my "Alternative" build in glass epoxy.  By putting the knowledge into this web site and sharing it with newcomers and existing owners, I hope it will provide a valuable resource and short cut to build on their existing knowledge.  If I have missed any valuable web sites, please forward the link and I will add it on.

If you are new to radio sailing, click here

A FINAL WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

I would like to say a big thank you for visiting this IOMBuildSetupTuneRace site.  My goal is to consolidate and share information on IOM stuff on the web site and combine it my own dinghy racing experience over 35 years.  It was built out of my frustration getting access to good information on radio sailing and particularly IOM boats.  I used to work for a company that collected data and presented it online to customers (for a large fee of course) so this was a logical step for me.

The web site is now complete from a racing and boat build point of view and I hope it will help newcomers and existing owners.  The next stage is to focus on racing and observation on mast sail combinations to truly understand what the best setup is. It is a constant learning process.   If there is anything else you would like covered I would be delighted to research and publish.   Please let me know

One favour I would ask is for feedback.  They say that no news is good news but I would like to hear what you think.  The site has over 8000 visitors (according to WIX stats) and has been studied for over 3652 hours at the last count so I assume that the info is relevant.  Let me know what you think.  Send me links to any boat build projects you have and I will add these to the site.  I have detailed an epoxy build but would like to reference more woody projects.

Please share the site as far and wide as possible so as many can benefit as possible.  This is not a commercial venture but I do get a kick out of seeing the number of users growing which is my return for building this site.

Keep safe and have a fabulous sailing year.

Achieve Your Potential in Competition IOM Sailing

Vickers RC Sailing

75472874_10157751310012277_7807677101569

Producer of the V11 Competition International One Metre Design by Ian Vickers.

Our workshop opened in 2014 with the V8 IOM. Since then we have produced hundreds of hand crafted IOM yachts in the Vickers design range. Yachts that have helped IOM competitors around the world achieve their potential and exceed expectations in competition.

We are currently offering the V11, the innovative design that finished 3rd at the 2019 World Championships in Port Alegre, Brazil.

When our clients return, they know they are tapping in to smart, competitive technology in IOM design and build. Stiff, Lightweight boats, that are Easily Assembled, Fast and Forgiving to sail. Join the fun!

Improve your results at the club and the regatta, with the fast and forgiving V11 from Vickers RC Sailing

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.

We are ready to help.

IMG_6638.jpg

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.

Vickers Rc Sailing is back taking orders again for the V11

We look forward to hearing from you

This site is primarily intended to help those building a one off IOM (International One Metre) or a similar radio controlled model yacht. Essentially the hull and decks can either by built in Glass / Epoxy throughout, or in Wood - typically Cedar or Balsa (balsa needs glass sheathing), and with a very thin ply deck.

Where you are intending to build a few similar boats, for example a group of you want to build the same design, a female mould of some form should be made. This is not dealt with here.

To me, wood is much prettier, but glass is likely to give a lighter, possilby stronger boat, so faster if done well. You can use correctors and put them in the right place for the conditions.

I spent over a year deciding on what design to build, and was lucky to be lent a one off designed IOM which helped me get to know the class. Eventually I decided to go for a V8 IOM designed by Ian Vickers, believing this will give me the best chance of going well in all conditions with the current crop of IOMs. As this was my first go at such a project, I also decided to try out techniques and make my mistakes (hopefully) on another build first, so I made one to my own design, a design that I had done drawn up before I got the Vickers plans.

Several other club members built similar boats (V8s) and Goths, and now Alternatives, so the following pages are mainly from my forst build, but also include other members photos.

To complicate the process, I react to Epoxy resin and many other chemicals, so please read to help working with Epoxy.

Happy building & hope this site helps

P.S. whatever time you think it will take to build your boat, it will almost certainly take you much longer.

Two prototypes were built including a 3D printed boat which was built by John Taylor in the UK.  The design incorporates several features of some of the newer IOM shapes including a fuller higher bow profile and wider stern. The design is well balanced and well behaved like the Ellipsis and also should be as easy to plank from wood.

ALIOTH Licensed 3D Printed IOM Kit

is backordered. We will ship it separately in 10 to 15 days.

Dragon Sailing North America is the authorized USA Factory for the ALIOTH International One Metre. This is a cutting edge International One Metre hull  and print design by top sailor Juan Egea from Spain at RC Sailing Labs. The ALIOTH design incorporates the latest cutting edge features of many top end International one meter classes including, balanced hull, hard chine, great forward buoyancy, among many other features! Juan's print design ensures that the licensed ALIOTH 3D print will be the proper width, quality, and rules compliant boat that you can enjoy for years to come! Our print is also structurally reinforced in several key areas not found in lower quality 3DP designs. DSNA uses PLA Tough Pro Filament for our prints to strive for  maximum durability and resistance to high temperatures. Our experience printing the hulls sections and sharing quality control information directly with other "Factories" and the designer, ensures a quality product for our skippers! Please note ,we require 5 business days to print a kit (7 Color Choices)  and internals (7 Color choices) . Each ALIOTH Lisenced Boat Kit Includes:

Paid License for the ALIOTH IOM 2023 Version 3!
3D printed Boat Hull sections (printed at 1.2mm width) Currently 3 sections (Unfinished, Unsanded, Uncut)
Internal 3D Printed Parts printed at 100% infill to comply with IOM Class Rules to accomodate deck hardware and internal rigging nuts & screws
RC Sailing Labs Pot and screw on top
Discounted Packages for DSNA  IOM Electronics / Batteries!

Alioth Licensed owners have full access to the forum at https://aliothiom.com for resources, and guides on building, finishing and coating the hull sections, rigging the boat, and getting a competitive IOM on the water racing!

Please keep in mind however 3D printed boats will not hold up under long periods in high heat, especially darker colors!  When not on the water make sure to store under cover, and out of the sun! Our design can accomodate several different types of servos & winches, but we recommend our ALIOTH Electronics Package Which includes our multi-voltage/ digital/ coreless, SW22 Sail Winch (w/ 40mm Drum) & DFGMD1 Micro Servo, which help reduce overall weight.  These servos are both super high torque, high quality , and battle tested for the IOM class. We also offer complete deck and internal hardware kits as an add on option. Currently, complete keel fin, rudder fin  and Ballast must be sourced separately directly from RC Sailing Labs.   Other fins and bulbs can be fitted to the boat kit with printed adapters available on request. We also have lightweight, reliable LiPo & Life Batteries, chargers available .  Rigs and sails can be sourced worldwide from many different dealers, currently DSNA does not carry these item or build boats turnkey! In an era of radio sailing when high end competeitive boats can take years to get on the water, the ALIOTH IOM is a fantastic, low cost alternative to enter the international level  of high end radio sailing!

position 1--hull sitting upright--bulb should have a webbing strap under to support load of it.

position 2--rig on, tilted so you can check the mast for side to side trim--hull needs to be tilted enough so you can stand and sight down the mast....

position 3--with bulb on support, you can trim booms and sails for best upwind settings

position 4--with rig off, you can transport hull with cradle laid on it side--will use some webbing and velcro to hold bulb in place
