History of the Mississippi River Steamboat

The legendary MISSISSIPPI – River Steamboat sailed the Mississippi throughout the 19th century, following a route that passed through the most emblematic cities along the river’s banks, from its origins in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the mouth of the river, down in New Orleans. The main characteristic of these delightful wooden boats were the great, steam engine powered paddle-wheels. The shallow draft of these fine boats allowed them to navigate all but the smallest of the main rivers.

It is ship model of legendary American riverboat. Scale 1:80, Length: 660 mm, Height: 192 mm Display scale kit difficulty: 2

Model ship riverboats were jacks of all trades. They served as the lifeline for cotton and inland trade, towed barges and ferried railroad trains across the river. As passenger boats, they helped to shrink the vastness of America, and as showboats, they made that vastness a little less lonely.

The kit features the following: This intermediate kit would be suitable for anyone who has previous model building experience. Artesania Latina has improved this popular plank-on-bulkhead kit for easier assembly. Molded wooden pieces are now included for the bow and stern sections, so you can shape them with accuracy. Pre-cut ribs and hardwood parts are included for hull, deck and super-structure construction. Fittings include brass decorations, ship's bell, steering wheel, handrails and chain. Windows, doors, chimney heads and paddle wheels are cast metal. Galvanized wire, brass cables and cotton rigging are all provided along with brass pin nails. Illustrated instruction book makes building easy. Figurines are not part of this kit . NOTE: This is a new improved version of Artesania Latina's kit. The model varies a little from the photograph. For example, there is one walkway at the bow instead of two. This is a more detailed model than the one pictured. We are sure you will be happy with it.

CAUTION!!  Although these are high quality ship model kits, they may not be suitable for some one not familiar with building of wooden model ship kits. See more.

About Robert E Lee Mississippi River Steamboat – Amati

ROBERT E LEE – The first highways in America were the great rivers, which permitted the growth of commerce and transport. The advent of steam and a brilliant idea of Fulton and Livingston, first builders of riverboats, permitted the upstream navigation on rivers.

The search for speed inspired marvelous competitions. One of the most famous races is that between Natchez and Robert E. Lee, held in 1870 between New Orleans and Saint Louis. After 750 miles of water the Robert E. Lee won the race, covering the distance in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes.

The Robert E Lee was a Mississippi River steamboat that captured the imagination of travelers in the late 19th century. With its towering black smokestacks and elegant white exterior, it was a sight to behold as it made its way along the winding river. Named after the famous Confederate general, the steamboat was a symbol of power and innovation in the post-Civil War era.

At 285 feet long and 63 feet wide, the Robert E Lee was one of the largest and most luxurious steamboats of its time. It was built in 1866 by the renowned shipbuilder John Litherbury, who spared no expense in its construction. The steamboat was equipped with the latest technology and boasted a powerful engine that could propel it through the water at an impressive speed of 20 miles per hour.

Kit includes solid wooden hull; machine turned smokestacks; photo-etched brass stanchions and decorations; white metal windows, doors, paddle wheels; wooden planking for deck and cabin; metal accessories; plans and detailed instructions.

About the The Robert E Lee

But it wasn’t just the speed that made the Robert E Lee stand out. It was also the luxurious amenities that made it a popular choice for travelers. The steamboat had a grand ballroom, a spacious dining hall, and even a smoking room for the gentlemen. The interior was lavishly decorated with ornate furnishings and intricate woodwork, giving it a regal and elegant atmosphere.

The Robert E Lee was not just a means of transportation, but a destination in itself. Many travelers would embark on the steamboat simply to experience the opulence and grandeur it had to offer. It became a popular choice for social events, such as weddings and parties, and was often used as a venue for concerts and performances.

But the Robert E Lee was not without its challenges. Navigating the treacherous Mississippi River was no easy feat, and the steamboat had to contend with dangerous currents, sandbars, and other hazards. However, the skilled crew and advanced technology on board ensured a safe and smooth journey for its passengers.

The steamboat also played a significant role in the economic development of the region. It transported goods and supplies along the Mississippi, helping to fuel the growth of cities and towns along its banks. The Robert E Lee became a symbol of progress and prosperity, as it brought people and goods to new frontiers and opened up opportunities for trade and commerce.

Sadly, the glory days of the Robert E Lee were short-lived. As railroads began to dominate the transportation industry, steamboats like the Robert E Lee gradually faded into obscurity. It made its final voyage in 1870 and was eventually dismantled in 1884.

Today, the Robert E Lee remains a powerful symbol of a bygone era. It represents the spirit of adventure, innovation, and grandeur that defined the Mississippi River steamboats. Though it may no longer grace the waters, its legacy lives on in the memories and stories of those who were lucky enough to experience its majestic presence.

HISTORY OF KING OF THE MISSISSIPPI

Discover King of the Mississippi and its renewed steamboat wooden model kit. The real steamer was entirely made of wood and equipped with boilers to move their iconic wheelpales, these ships were the solution to transport passengers and merchandise along the river well into the XX Century.

Steamboats played an important role in the development of the Mississippi River basin and its tributaries allowing a convenient transportation in both directions of the river. They helped to reduce the immensity of America and as 'theater boats' reduced the solitude of this immensity. America is not just modernism: it's also romance and dreams! Dream and fall in love now with this unique model that will beautify any of the rooms at home!

I was wanting to eventually build a wooden Mississippi Paddle Boat. I am thinking large scale 1:90 or larger. I have found old AL King of Mississippi kit on eBay but was wondering what suggestions may out from those who may have built this kit or one from another company Please let me know what you know! Thanks Kurt K

pebbleworm

I remember a lot of griping about the King of the Mississippi kit on a usenet forum a very long time ago. As far as a kit goes, The Model Expo Chaperon looks pretty nice: Model Shipways CHAPERON STERNWHEEL STEAMER 1:48 SCALE . There was a LOT of variations on the general theme of a box on a raft, and there are plans available from the National Parks Service's Historic American Engineering Record and other sources if you want to go the scratch route.

paulv1958

The AL kit is an OK and fun kit without major issues ( except the main stairway which is s technical challenge). The only issues to be noted is on older kits, the cabin ballroom fittings do not lign up with the deck holes, so be aware ( mine from 5 years ago okay). Also the 2nd layer on the hull has just(barely enough wood supplied) so be frugal and dont thtow away cutoffs. It is a fun ship to build and the instructions are complete for once. Lots of metal & PE and LOTS of very fiddly painting. Easy to add a motor & lights for animated paddle. For what it is , its good value. its builds to approx 50cm in length and being flat bottomed does snot need a stand. Great kit to relax with.

I have the Constructo "River Queen" mostly built and think it makes a nicer river boat than most, especially when painted. The wood seems better and it goes together well. I have seen a couple Robert E Lee models that are nice also but not sure of the kit,

Glad you found it, I was searching and found photos but no direct link to mfg so I'm guessing it may be discontinued. I got it used about 5 years ago.

I found reference to a Revell plastic kit of the Robert E. Lee, did someone make a wooden ship kit?

There are several wooden REL kits, some may no longer be in production but they are out there just Google wooden ship kit Robert E Lee

IMG_20200414_004050.jpg

Looks very good! What scale and overall size is she?

  • Apr 14, 2020

If I may add, I went back to your original post about 1:90 scale. I might be wrong, but a 1:90 scale of a steam paddle boat is going to be quite small. I might be wrong, but that would make the boat about 12 to 18 inches long (??) the chaperon from model-e is 1;47 at almost 36 inches. So 18 inches sounds about right for a 1:90. Kind of small. if you do find a 1:90, it will lack serious detail and be toyish looking. but then again, I am not sure what you are striving for.

That is what confuses me Amati says there REL is 1:150 scale? Even smaller

Is there a way to just see what the overall dimensions are? Maybe they post this info on site and just ignore the scale. It might all be typo error or something. it’s all give and take. You might like dimension but you might not like the appearance of product.

Well I got the kit last night. UPS came at 8:00PM. I had ordered it from Model Ship Building College in Australia. (it was little lower cost) According to the internet tracking it made 27 transfer on it's way here.  the shipment came through Europe,London, New York, Miami, to Palm Beach Gardens

post-14839-0-62333100-1452605990_thumb.jpg

I am not going to unpack it any further than that. I'll do it as I need the parts

I do not intend to finish it like the pictures in the box. I am going to paint the hull flat white, and tone down the finish everywhere.

Also I intend to put lights in it like the model of the "Portland" that I just finished.

A quick review of the drawings and part show that Mantua took some liberty  in making this kit a true "Scale Model".

The  paddle  wheel scales out to be 28 ft in Dia where it should be in the 16 - 18 range. The  aspect  ratio of the model makes it appear short and tall.

Well here is the first step.

post-14839-0-12639000-1452606736_thumb.jpg

The kit is roughly 9" wide and 40" long. A quick look at the parts trouble me a little in that some of the parts look out of scale. For example the paddle wheel is 7" in dia. That scales to 28 feet. I would think it should be around 16 to 18 feet. The cabin height also looks a little tall. I am not sure what realistically they should be. I'll take any input.

After I get the hull planked I'll mock it up and see how it works out.

I am certainly goig to cut down the wheel and try to get  everything  in the right proportions. I have Built the Chaparon (MSW), and it appears very true to historic drawing and pictures so I will use the as a guide.

Another note on the kit. The supplied plywood is very soft and porous. Using  thin quick set CA the glue gets absorbed by wood, and a second coat has to be used. I switched to the thicked CA and it works ok.

I'm excited to follow this build, as I don't know much about these kits and want to learn more about their content and quality. I agree, every steamboat kit I've seen looks foreshortened to me, like someone squeezed the plans in their drafting program. Do the included materials say anything about what they based the design on?

I can't tell from the photos, but does the main deck have any sheer to it? My understanding is that decks gradually flattened over time, as builders realized they didn't need to copy ocean-going vessels in that regard. It would certainly make various aspects of the kit easier!

Current builds: scratchbuilt Missouri River steamboat Peerless (1893) ;  1:1 scale timber-framed outdoor kitchen

Nautical builds (kits):  USS Cairo ;  NRG capstan project ;  NRG half-hull ;   Viking longship ; US revenue cutter ; 18th century longboat ; Bounty launch Missouri River craft (scratchbuilt) :   1853 Missouri River steamboat Arabia ;  1865 steamboat Bertrand ; Lewis & Clark barge ; keelboat ; 1876 steamboat  Far West

Here is a side shot of the main deck. You may not be able to read the ruler, but it is  5/8" and over all length is 40"

The names that show up on the drawing are:  "The River Prince Company" on side of Engine room, "Tennessee - New Orleans" on the side of the boiler room  & "Matthew V Spress"  on the side of the Pilot House.

Here is a picture of the Chaparon (MSW) that I built which has good proportions and is in agreement with a picture of it in real Life.

I'll copy it and include in future post.

post-14839-0-47807600-1452624552_thumb.jpg

  • Canute , cristikc and edmay

There was also the name "The Bourbon Nearly"  shown on the front of the Pilot House. Sorry I missed it last time. Also below is a old photo of the

Chaparon it is essentially identical to the kit.

post-14839-0-05404500-1452695952_thumb.jpg

  • Canute and edmay

Thanks for the names. I asked so I could look them up in my copy of Way's Packet Directory, which lists most known riverboats from 1848-1994, and see if I could identify a boat the kit might be based on. Unfortunately, there are no listed boats with names anything like Matthew Spress or Bourbon (anything), so that was a dead end.

Regardless, I'm very interested in how you approach this kit. Thanks for the profile photo, there's definitely still some sheer there!

  • mtaylor and Canute

I am going to finish planking the hull, then try to mock up the decks to see what the kit hieghts are. Then I may have to scratch build or modify portions to get it reasonable. I am certainly going to reduce the wheel to around 18ft.

  • Canute and Cathead
  • 3 weeks later...

sorry it took so long to continue, but a few personal issues have held me up. I have finished the hull planking, and have done a little mock up of the superstructure. Without knowing any facts I would say the model is a little “to tall”. The paddle wheel is 28ft in dia, the boiler room is 12ft tall

The other decks have a ceiling height of 9+ft.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to modify it to something less, but with all the laser cut parts that fit so well it means that if you change one it cascades through the whole model. So I have decided to follow the plans except where change does not create a mountain of problems. I have cut the paddle wheel down to 18ft. and am going use flat finishes instead of the varnish. I have pained the hull white and tan below the water line.

post-14839-0-91168400-1454449064_thumb.jpg

The planking on the bottom of the hull is not to good. It calls for double planking, but when I decided to paint the hull i decided to leave the bottom as is. If someone turns it over after it is built,, so be it.

The paddle wheel in the background is painted dark red, and the paddles are dark red  mahogany. I get a better picture next time.

  • cog and samson

I see I posted the last twice. Sorry. I get the hang of this soon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is the status to date. I have the main deck structures in place and painted. I used tan for the hull. I saw it in a picture of the Bertram in Cathead's forum and I thought it look good and different.

it looks great  .  i too have a goo eye to thous old riwer boots . i will folow with interest .

The first photo made me jump, as the paddle was backward, but I let out a sigh of relief when I saw you were just test-fitting it. Good progress. I can't tell from the photo, are those structures already planked,  or does that happen next?

I appreciate your keen eye.  I took one picture then realized I should show the paddle wheel so I just set it there. The structures are planked, and I have just started planking the deck. Here I am using another idea I got from you. I have cut the strips in "20 and 10 ft" lengths and stained them Minwax natural then randomly layed them. I like the effect. I think I mentioned before I do not intend to "Gloss" anything. Just going to keep it flat finish.

Since the kit has no real name I am trying to come up with my own name for it. I may use my wife's maiden name.

I have practiced using decal paper with an ink jet printer and things have come out pretty well. When I come up with something I like I'll put it on a 1/32" plywood and mount it on the side.

post-14839-0-79392300-1455281942_thumb.jpg

This picture shows the wire that will got to the spotlight that is on the foremast.

Glad you are following, and keep the comment coming

  • cog and edmay

Thanks for that photo, I can see the structure planking now. And I agree that I like the look of decks done that way, though I'm hardly unbiased.

Adding lighting is very neat.

I have completed the main deck to the point that I will add the next (boiler deck??). According to the plans I will add the rails etc on the main deck latter.

post-14839-0-21417200-1455985186_thumb.jpg

I have added lights to the engine room, boiler room and over the doors. I'll get a better photo of the effect next time. I thing I want to add a red led to the boiler room to get a little more effect.

I had to add ceilings to the boiler and engine rooms because of the lights, and prevent them from shining through to the upper deck.

post-14839-0-86520100-1455985206_thumb.jpg

I finished the planking with MinWax wipe on poly (wop). Really couldn't tell the before and after finish.

The lights are a nice touch, that's something I've never played with. And yes, the next deck up is the boiler deck, despite not hosting the boilers.

I finish the main staircase and the lights for that area. All the lights are 12v 1.8mm LEDS. I have a variable resistor that I may have to use to dim it a little. I'll wait till after I finished to see if I need it.

post-14839-0-77655100-1459347506_thumb.jpg

I am making afew modifacations to the plans. Mainly am moving the Stacks outboard. The plans have them going through the cabin area. I will do the same with the steam engine exhaust stacks

  • slow2cool , Gerhardvienna , cog and 4 others

cog

Slowly but very nice indeed, I'm curious as to how those stacks will turn out ...

"Desperate affairs require desperate measures." Lord Nelson Search and you might find a log ...

Carl the main change is on the boiler deck. Initially they blended into the cabin area at the top. I lowered this blend to the bottom of the deck. On the Hurricane deck I moved the stacks about 1/4" out ( thast a foot in scale). In engine room exhausts I haven't placed them. should be in passage way. They are now in the cabin.

The Hurricane deck is planked I will get some pictures of it.

  • cog and slow2cool

I mislabled the decks I refereed to. I meant the Salon Deck not the Hurricane. (I still think they ought to be called the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc)

  • slow2cool and cog

Steamboat deck nomenclature is definitely not intuitive.

After all the research you have done how do you feel about the finish on the top? I intend to make either Black as if it was tared, our planked with heavy chalking between planks. I am leaning toward the tar.
