Built completely from aluminum, OHANA is the perfect balance of performance and luxury. A finalist for many prestigious design awards and a proven track record at regattas, the looks and performance of this stunning superyacht are indisputable. When not under sail, her Caterpillar C32 ACERT 1,400-brake-horsepower engine propel her to a maximum and cruising speeds of 14 and 12 knots, while her fixed bulb keel ensures stability. For serious sailors, OHANA can be available for regatta charters.

HUGE EXTERIOR AREAS

The enormous deck areas of OHANA offer many options to enjoy the alfresco life. The aft cockpit offers a large sunbathing area with sun pads, perfect for lounging in the Mediterranean sun before descending the stern stairs to the swimming platform. From here, guests can slide in the water to cool off, enjoy the tranquility of a quiet snorkel, or make use of OHANA’s extensive collection of dive gear including a dive compressor to explore deeper underwater (rendezvous diving only). Guests can also make use of the onboard windsurfs, paddleboards, and dinghies, and take lessons from the onboard instructors. The large sofas and coffee tables of the flybridge are perfect for gathering and enjoying a coffee or relaxing in the early evening with a drink. The alfresco dining area of the main deck is perfect for formal or informal meals, with sheltered sides enabling guests to enjoy the sea air whatever the weather.

ELEGANT LIVING

OHANA’s high-performance does not forgo the elegance and luxury of a superyacht charter. The neutral palette of interior areas creates an atmosphere of understated decadence while sumptuously comfortable furnishings invite guests to sink in and enjoy the serenity. The stunning black marble table in the main salon is perfect for elegant dinners prepared by OHANA’s excellent chef; after which, guests can retire to the sofas of the main salon to enjoy a digestif from the bar or gather for relaxed movie nights with the cinema setup. The five staterooms on board OHANA include a full-beam master, two doubles, and four singles. Up to ten guests are accommodated on board, cared for by OHANA’s experienced crew of eight. All staterooms all feature en-suites and are lavishly decorating in keeping with the interior décor of OHANA.

Chef Nikolaj’s menus focus on featuring local items in a creative and sophisticated way. This means fresh-farmed eggs, hand picked microgreens, and island-farmed vegetables when available. Local hot sauces, inspired infused flavors and supporting local every chance we get. 

Breads and baked goods are all made in the galley or sourced from local bakeries. He uses organic and high quality ingredients. Ohana supports keeping sustainability a priority when selecting meats and fish for our guests. 

Dietary requirements and preferences can be met with advance notice. We are happy to accommodate everyone from picky eaters to those on medical diets. Most menu options can be served in a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or pescetarian modification easily. Certain diets require high-cost provisioning and may be subject to an additional cost. 

Menus and planned meals are subject to change at any time due to remote provisioning restrictions, guest requests, sailing plans or at the chef’s discretion. 

For celebrations requiring special items, themed decoration or large dessert requests, the guests may be asked to take Happy Hour on shore to give the crew time to set up, set the mood, and aim for a beautiful surprise. Please give advance notice for celebration cakes.

A custom layout featuring hand-picked design elements made in-factory at Sunreef’s shipyard in Poland ensures she is one-of-a-kind. Her bold exterior boasts a custom color hull while the contemporary decor finds softness in the warm, light woods and coastal blues of her inviting interior. All five king beds are all floor-level berths with full-walk around access. Each cabin boasts a mirror-covered wall to allow for maximum light during the day and lend an airy vibe to the comfortable cabins. Five spacious heads are ensuite featuring spa-like, waterfall shower heads and full-size commodes.

With three wet bars, a central open-concept galley, and a seamless flow between the yacht’s interior and exterior spaces, Ohana creates a perfect platform to host guests comfortably. Ohana 80, is a luxury sailing yacht ideal for exclusive getaways, intimate charters, and island adventures. Ohana accommodates up to ten guests in five deluxe, king-size ensuite cabins. The king beds are all floor-level berths with full-walk-around access. Airy, luxurious guest cabins each have a mirror-covered wall to allow for maximum light during the day, roomy closets and storage spaces, temperature control, a retractable flatscreen TV, and an immense bathroom. All heads are ensuite featuring spa-like, waterfall shower heads and full-size commodes. A perfect setting to unwind and relax after a long day in the sun.

With three fully-equipped wet bars, a central open-concept galley, and seamless flow between the yacht’s interior and exterior spaces, Ohana creates a perfect platform to host guests comfortably. A vast, central lounging space with panoramic views opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit. The bow benefits from a cozy lounge, well shielded from sun and wind. To the aft, the saloon merges with the spacious cockpit offering a lovely al fresco dining area. The cockpit overlooks an extra-large hydraulic platform that can act as a swim-up island once the jet tender is splashed. From the aft bathing platform, you can launch water toys, try scuba diving for the first time, or sun tan all at sea level. All the areas combined form a universal, open environment where flexibility and freedom reign.

Unique to Ohana, a day-head is located in the aft cockpit to allow for maximum comfort during the day. The day head is complete with a wash basin and changing table for our younger guests. In addition, there are two waterfall shower heads by each aft sugar scoop for fresh water rinses throughout the sunny, salty days. Underwater lights line the waterline for added ambiance in the evening.

High bulwarks and a large beam lend to the superstructure design allowing for a generous flybridge and bimini that extends its full length. Along with dual helms, the flybridge is dedicated to leisure, with comfortable seating, plush sun pads, and a large jacuzzi. There are options to dine alfresco while enjoying movie night with the family or catch a game on the large, retractable flatscreen TV while simultaneously enjoying a 360 view of the Caribbean.

Ohana is BVI-based, and BVI Taxes, Permits, and Licenses are paid by Ohana.

Scuba Diving: During a seven-day charter onboard Ohana, certified divers can dive up to five times, one dive per full charter day, with the guidance of a scuba instructor. Additional dives can be added based on the itinerary and Captain Tyler’s discretion. The cost of scuba diving is $100 per dive/diver.

TYLER BORUFF

Captain Tyler is always on the move and ready for an adventure, he is a man of many hobbies and easily relates to others. He grew up fishing, boating, wakeboarding, and water-skiing.

When he was ten he sailed for the first time and he quickly became hooked. In college, he worked as a windsurfing and scuba instructor. His passion for being on the water followed him to the East Coast where he owned his own fishing boats and served as a first mate/instructor on several dive boats. Tyler has always been an outdoorsman whether it’s hunting or backpacking in the mountains of North Carolina, where he calls home, cave diving in North Florida, or free diving in the Keys. He satisfies his land-based tendencies by hiking around the islands and finding the best jumping spots to plunge into the ocean. On the water, he enjoys throwing out a line or diving for lobsters in the USVI, and in the BVI he enjoys kiteboarding. In the water, he is an avid free diver and exceptional at fish identification.

Shawn hardesty.

Shawn grew up on the coast of North Carolina, where hobbies such as scuba diving, surfing and sailing started at an early age. His love for this life lead him to pursue a career as a USCG Captain.

Shawn’s yachting experience started as a second engineer on motor yachts before finding his niche as a captain on sailing catamarans. His background on super yachts allow him to bring a high-level of service to his craft - an eye for detail and a pride in service.

While Shawn’s charter captain career has centered in the Caribbean, he has had some remarkable opportunities all over the world. Shawn has spent time cruising the Rivas province of SW Pacific side of Nicaragua leading boat trips tailored for fishing and surfing. The past several years he has been captaining in Europe and French Polynesia. His chartering experience includes extensive cruising in the Caribbean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the South Pacific.

Wherever he is in the world, you can notice his passion for being outdoors which allows him to connect his body and mind through water. Catching surf or wind, he is always up for an adventure.

Josh has been on the water for as long as he can remember. Growing up, Josh learned to wakeboard and water ski. He spent his spare time fouling and sailing boats of all sizes for pleasure and racing. He was always drawn to the water’s edge. It didn’t take long for him to plunge in and get hooked on all that diving had to offer. Under the surface, he found a whole new level of passion after he took his junior open water course that would follow him into adulthood.

Josh became a scuba instructor in the hopes that he could explore exotic places. This has led him to have a myriad of jobs all over the Caribbean. He has worked on some of the most notable liveaboards and worked in partnership with companies like National Geographic.

Josh has also served as a rescue diver, worked as a support diver for environmental studies, learned to be a salvage diver and even mapped/surveyed dive sites. His diving resume is impressive giving him a comfort and ease underwater. Noticeable as he serves as Ohana’s lead dive instructor. Josh also has a knack for engineering which is crucial to his role as the mate.

His journey started on Ohana when he got the rare opportunity to cross the Atlantic and from then he was instantly itching to get back onboard. Josh is here to make sure you also cannot wait to be back onboard too!

Despite growing up in a landlocked province in Canada, Maddy’s passion for aquatic pursuits has always been undeniable. She started scuba diving at age ten and has experience as a lifeguard and swim instructor.

She started scuba diving at age ten and has experience as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Maddy spent her summers wake surfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Recently graduated from university, with five years as a varsity student-athlete, Maddy's competitive spirit makes her always up for a beach game, a hike, or family board game. Her sense of team-work and commitment to the best experience radiates through everything she does. She will ensure each moment aboard Ohana is filled with laughter, relaxation, and joy accompanied by the hydrating drink of your choice!

Maddy has a background in the high-end service industry. She has pursued continuing education which has earned her key knowledge when it comes to pairing your wines, whipping up custom cocktails, and making sure your cravings are catered to. Her creative side and attention to detail shines when it comes to curated party planning, laying beautiful table scapes, and ensuring your space onboard exceeds your expectations.

Maddy's journey with Ohana began as a guest. She chartered with Tyler three times and spent the entirety of her last charter repeatedly badgering Tyler for a job. Chef Nikolaj’s menus focus on featuring local items in a creative and sophisticated way. This means fresh-farmed eggs, hand picked microgreens, and island-farmed vegetables when available. Local hot sauces, inspired infused flavors and supporting local every chance we get.

Breads and baked goods are all made in the galley or sourced from local bakeries. He uses organic and high quality ingredients. Ohana supports keeping sustainability a priority when selecting meats and fish for our guests.

Dietary requirements and preferences can be met with advance notice. We are happy to accommodate everyone from picky eaters to those on medical diets. Most menu options can be served in a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or pescetarian modification easily. Certain diets require high-cost provisioning and may be subject to an additional cost.

Menus and planned meals are subject to change at any time due to remote provisioning restrictions, guest requests, sailing plans or at the chef’s discretion.

For celebrations requiring special items, themed decoration or large dessert requests, the guests may be asked to take Happy Hour on shore to give the crew time to set up, set the mood, and aim for a beautiful surprise. Please give advance notice for celebration cakes.

Ohana 80, is a luxury sailing yacht ideal for exclusive getaways, intimate charters and island adventures. Ohana accommodates up to ten guests in five deluxe, king-size ensuite cabins. A custom layout featuring hand-picked design elements made in-factory at Sunreef’s shipyard in Poland ensures she is one-of-a-kind.

With three fully-equipped wet bars, a central open-concept galley, and seamless flow between the yacht’s interior and exterior spaces, Ohana creates a perfect platform to host guests comfortably. Classy lines underscore her modern style with a classic edge. The contemporary decor finds softness in the warm, light woods and coastal blues of her inviting interior. Her bold exterior boasts a custom color hull.

A vast, central lounging space with a panoramic view opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit. The bow benefits from a cozy lounge, well shielded from sun and wind. To the aft, the saloon merges with the spacious cockpit offering a lovely al fresco dining area. The cockpit overlooks an extra large hydraulic platform that can act as a swim-up island once the jet tender is splashed. From the aft bathing platform, you can launch water toys, try scuba diving for the first time or sun tan all at sea-level. All the areas combined form a universal, open environment where flexibility and freedom reign.

Ohana has a built in scuba diving compressor and an area designated to tanks and top-of-the-line gear. Four Seabobs are also on offer along with a wide array of water toys and adventure sports to try.

Unique to Ohana, a day-head is located in the aft cockpit to allow for maximum comfort during the day. The day head is complete with a wash basin and changing table for our younger guests. In addition, there are two waterfall shower heads by each aft sugar scoop for fresh water rinses throughout the sunny, salty days. Underwater lights line the waterline for an added ambiance in the evening.

High bulwarks and a large beam lend to the superstructure design allowing for a generous flybridge and bimini that extends its full length. Along with dual helms, the flybridge is dedicated to leisure, with comfortable seating, plush sunpads, and a large jacuzzi. There are options to dine al fresco while enjoying movie night with the family or catch a game on the large, retractable flatscreen TV while simultaneously enjoying a 360 view of the Caribbean.

The hulls provide impressive volumes to this large yacht. Airy, luxurious guest cabins encompass king-size beds, roomy closets and storage spaces, retractable TV and an immense bathroom. A perfect setting to unwind and relax after a long day in the sun.

Ohana is a Hawaiian term meaning family. It often refers to one’s extended support system, including nuclear family, extended family, close friends, colleagues and community groups. The word is imbued with loyalty, compassion, support and love. In native Hawaiian culture, it is a great honor to be a part of an ohana; it means that you’ll never be forgotten or left behind. The root word ʻohā refers to the shoot of the taro plant, a Hawaiian staple. Ana is a word that conveys regeneration. Just as the taro plant produces offshoots, a person’s family is multigenerational and grows in different directions to include all of the people they love.

With three fully-equipped wet bars, a central open-concept galley, and seamless flow between the yacht’s interior and exterior spaces, Ohana creates a perfect platform to host guests comfortably. Classy lines underscore her modern style with a classic edge. The contemporary decor finds softness in the warm, light woods and coastal blues of her inviting interior. Her bold exterior boasts a custom color hull.

A vast, central lounging space with a panoramic view opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit. The bow benefits from a cozy lounge, well shielded from sun and wind. To the aft, the saloon merges with the spacious cockpit offering a lovely al fresco dining area. The cockpit overlooks an extra large hydraulic platform that can act as a swim-up island once the jet tender is splashed. From the aft bathing platform, you can launch water toys, try scuba diving for the first time or sun tan all at sea-level. All the areas combined form a universal, open environment where flexibility and freedom reign.

Ohana has a built in scuba diving compressor and an area designated to tanks and top-of-the-line gear. Four Seabobs are also on offer along with a wide array of water toys and adventure sports to try.

Unique to Ohana, a day-head is located in the aft cockpit to allow for maximum comfort during the day. The day head is complete with a wash basin and changing table for our younger guests. In addition, there are two waterfall shower heads by each aft sugar scoop for fresh water rinses throughout the sunny, salty days. Underwater lights line the waterline for an added ambiance in the evening.

High bulwarks and a large beam lend to the superstructure design allowing for a generous flybridge and bimini that extends its full length. Along with dual helms, the flybridge is dedicated to leisure, with comfortable seating, plush sunpads, and a large jacuzzi. There are options to dine al fresco while enjoying movie night with the family or catch a game on the large, retractable flatscreen TV while simultaneously enjoying a 360 view of the Caribbean.

The hulls provide impressive volumes to this large yacht. Airy, luxurious guest cabins encompass king-size beds, roomy closets and storage spaces, retractable TV and an immense bathroom. A perfect setting to unwind and relax after a long day in the sun.

He has over 20 years of experience skippering, racing, teaching and captaining sailboats and is excited to show anyone the ins and out of the sport. He has been cruising the Caribbean since the early 2000’s aboard large sailing catamarans and can share his extensive knowledge of the islands, restaurants and culture with you. Cory was the captain on a Sunreef 60 the past four seasons and is excited to learn the ins and outs of Ohana as the mate.

Emily comes from a family of charter boat captains. She was taught from a young age everything about the boating industry and conservation, while being raised on Tybee Island, Georgia. Emily has always had an extreme passion for being on the water and outdoor activities. As a certified yoga instructor, she has taught many practices on the beach, stand up paddle boards and sailboats. Emily has more than 20 years experience in the service industry. She has spent the past five years creating exquisite meals on large catamarans in the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. As your stew, she will provide wine and cocktails paired to every occasion while making your experience a fun, safe environment.

If you’re interested in adding yoga into your sailing vacation, Emily will be happy to offer three complementary yoga sessions on the boat, beach or stand up paddleboards.

This crew’s strong background in water safety and background in scuba diving makes them capable of providing an extra level of security to all of their guests.

Chef Nikolaj’s menus focus on featuring local items in a creative and sophisticated way. This means fresh-farmed eggs, hand picked microgreens, and island-farmed vegetables when available. Local hot sauces, inspired infused flavors and supporting local every chance we get. 

Breads and baked goods are all made in the galley or sourced from local bakeries. He uses organic and high quality ingredients. Ohana supports keeping sustainability a priority when selecting meats and fish for our guests. 

Dietary requirements and preferences can be met with advance notice. We are happy to accommodate everyone from picky eaters to those on medical diets. Most menu options can be served in a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or pescetarian modification easily. Certain diets require high-cost provisioning and may be subject to an additional cost. 

Menus and planned meals are subject to change at any time due to remote provisioning restrictions, guest requests, sailing plans or at the chef’s discretion. 

For celebrations requiring special items, themed decoration or large dessert requests, the guests may be asked to take Happy Hour on shore to give the crew time to set up, set the mood, and aim for a beautiful surprise. Please give advance notice for celebration cakes. 

If your group is interested in starting their morning off with a yoga session from one of our two yoga instructors onboard, Ohana offers a special option…

Movement | Meditate | Mmmmmm

This option allows guests to start their morning with fresh squeezed juices, infused water, and coffee. Guests can then enjoy a guided 60 or 90 minute yoga flow, a short meditation focusing on the movement of water and breathwork, then a nutritious smoothie for breakfast and a ginger-tumeric immunity booster!

This option is great for those who feel three meals, including a three-course dinner and snacks, a day is too much or who would like to be mindful about their health while on vacation. OM and YUM in paradise!

First and foremost, the entire crew, led by Captain John was spectacular to be around... They fully understood the "family dynamics" (having a 7 year old up to an 83 year old) well and catered to all perfectly... They are a absolutely delightful and experienced team of professionals that went above and beyond to make sure we all had a fantastic experience... Sara would love to have any of the "guys" as Manny's as well. They were so good with the two boys. In addition, Alice may be the best Chef on any yacht! Sara and I have been lucky enough to taste food from the best restaurants and chefs in the world, and Alice is at the top... I am not kidding or being gratuitous.. She is worth her weight in gold, not to mention being a lovely person... The boat was also extremely comfortable and we enjoyed all the toys... We even contributed to dinner a couple of nights through Beck's fishing with a couple of Mahi Mahi, some Snapper and even a Lobster...The weather also turned out to be "goldilocks like", not too cold and not too hot! Share full article By Alan Yuhas More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink. “It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.” But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat. Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard. The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors. An ‘earthquake’ in the sky? When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists. But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before. Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship. Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said. The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms. Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions. The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship. Open hatches or doors? The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008. Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck. At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep. 12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members. Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck. The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled. A retracted keel? The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level. But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks. Human error? Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects. “There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.” It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank. Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy. Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board. Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck. The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said. Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile L ast week’s sinking of the 56-metre yacht Bayesian and the tragic deaths of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his guests and boat staff have given the public a glimpse into the rarefied world of superyachts. From the sheer size of the mast (74 metres, roughly the size of seven two-storey houses stacked on top of each other) to the expense ( Bayesian was put up for sale in 2014 with an asking price of $30m, which is around £23m), to the sheer luxury (the interiors were by Remi Tessier, the designer behind Claridge’s new penthouse), it’s a world few people normally get to see.  There are currently 12,626 superyachts on the water around the world with 1,166 superyachts in build or on order. If you have been to a Greek island this year, or maybe the Amalfi coast, you may have glimpsed them coming in and out of harbours and wondered who owns a yacht like that. Or who can afford to charter a yacht like that – which have an average price of around £180,000 a week. While you may think of glossy influencers and A-listers, the superyachting fraternity is where millionaires are sorted from the billionaires from the centi-billionaires; the 0.001 per centers. Rarely will you find a celebrity with the financial clout to afford a yacht owned by Lynch, these are generally under-the-radar industry titans who don’t have household names.  So, what exactly makes a superyacht super? According to Boat International , where I work, it can be applied to any boat, motor or sailing yacht which is over 24 metres in length. Size, in the superyacht world, is everything – and yachts are getting bigger all the time. Indeed, our data arm BoatPro shows that the average length of a new-build yacht is now 39.2 metres, up from 38.5 metres last year. Currently, the largest yacht in the world is the motor yacht Azzam – at 180.6 metres, almost two football fields in length and triple the size of Lynch’s Bayesian . For owners, yachts can be bought “semi-custom” (a bit like a new-build house off-plan but on a much grander scale), or “fully-custom” – meaning they’re built from scratch to the owner’s exact specifications. And it is not a quick process either: it can take up to four years from design stage to completion, with 300 people or more working on each project. All of which might go some way to explaining the mind-boggling price of them. While this changes according to market fluctuations and demand, a fully custom 100-metre with all the bells and whistles is around £200m. And that’s just for starters. Depending on the size and age of the yacht you’ll need to spend at least 5-10 per cent of the purchase price every year on the cost of maintaining and operating it (so, in this case, £20m on crew, fuel, tax, insurance, harbour fees).  Some owners like to recoup some of their running costs by turning their yacht into a mini hotel business and chartering it out. A commercially successful boat (neutral interiors, jacuzzi, lots of executive toys) will pick up several charters a year, covering the traditional charter beats of the Med in summer and the Caribbean in winter. The 85-metre yacht Bold , for example, is equipped with an outdoor cinema, helipad, teppanyaki grill, inflatables, water skis – a snip at £665,000 a week.  While many prefer to keep a low profile, other yacht owners like fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger aren't so shy, and love to use their yacht to entertain (in Hilfiger's case, Kris Jenner of Kardashian fame). But more often than not, owners are super-private. (Lynch was one of these owners who liked to keep things low-key.) Often even the building of the yacht can be wrapped in a cloak of secrecy, and the engineers and craftspeople working on them won’t know who the owner is.  Unlike a car, yachts don’t depreciate in value quite as sharply. The caveat to this is that you need to keep it in pristine condition. This takes work: one thing that is true on Netflix hit Below Deck – crew really do clean cracks between floor tiles with toothpicks. Keep on top of maintenance and your yacht will last 70 years or more. Christina O , the iconic superyacht once owned by shipping giant Aristotle Onassis and wife Jackie O, is still going strong at 81 years old. She was recently listed for sale for €90m (£68m). You will need at least a crew of 20 for your 100-metre yacht. Not made-for-TV crews, but ones with professional qualifications, who you would trust to handle your multimillion-pound bit of kit. Good captains are very sought after and can name their price. Sailing guests to exotic parts of the world is just a tiny part of the job: you have to plan safe routes, book berths in marinas (you’re looking north of €117,000 – around £99,000 – for the Monaco Grand Prix week), manage crew, handle copious paperwork and organise repairs and yard visits. It’s not just a case of popping it into a local garage for a service – which explains why guests must take off their shoes before stepping on board to protect the precious teak decking.  And unlike other status symbols like supercars or precious watch collections, you can’t just moor a superyacht and forget about it until your next fancy holiday. They need constant attention – as the US government found to their cost when they seized Amadea , a 106-metre superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch and discovered they needed to pay out $7m (£5m) a year in maintenance.  This is why superyachts become such passion projects, beyond whether they are worth it or not. Owners don’t just own them, they put their hearts and souls into them. And this is where the fun happens. Because despite the tacky “gold taps and bling” reputation that blights the industry, many owners are, on the contrary, super-creative with their superyachts: cue underwater “Nemo” lounges, indoor gardens, waterfalls, snow rooms, padel courts, IMAX cinemas… imaginations have no limits.  Innovation is at the heart of the industry and is very bespoke according to need. Some owners prefer the cut and thrust of sail over motor and a closer experience of the sea. Some want a vessel that can circumnavigate the globe so they can really see the world. Bayesian , for example, was built to go places and her sistership Rosehearty (an almost identical yacht built by the same yard) has been taken around the globe multiple times in all weathers without a hitch.  Some owners get their yachts built with sturdy “ice class” hulls so they can visit the Poles. These are called “explorer yachts” and they have laboratories for visiting scientists, personal submersibles, James Bondesque “moon pools”, openings in the hull for subs to dock, and so on. Sometimes an explorer yacht is not big enough to handle everything an adventurous owner wants to do – which is where support vessels (secondary yachts used to store kit such as seaplanes and snowmobiles) come in.  Why have one yacht when you can have two? Some forward-thinking owners put their cash behind investigating greener alternatives to traditional diesel engines. The world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht, Project 821 , which is 119-metres long, reportedly hit the water this June. Project Zero , a “zero fossil fuel” sailing yacht with the ability to harvest wind, thermal and solar energy launches in 2025.  There has been a lot of speculation about what caused the tragedy with Bayesian . Superyachts have been known to have accidents, but rather than sink in storms, they run aground or catch fire (lithium batteries have been cited as a culprit in some cases). Often, due to the length of time passed and complex technical reports released by investigators, we never find out the cause. It’s now over to investigators to discover how an “unsinkable” yacht sank last week. The final discovery was announced on Friday; the other six bodies had been found after the calamity. Tech mogul Mike Lynch is among the people whose bodies were recovered from the sailing yacht, called Bayesian. The massive yacht sank in a violent storm along the shore of Sicily early on Monday. Italian divers on Friday recovered the body of Lynch’s daughter Hannah, 18, who was the last person unaccounted for. Lynch’s body was identified on Thursday, according to The Associated Press and other news outlets, citing the Italian coast guard. The agency did not immediately respond to messages from NPR. The sea rescue operation included 123 dives, according to the Italian fire brigade . Robotic craft have also been used in the search. Local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia reports that Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18, is believed to be the only remaining missing person from the calamity. 15 people survived the catastrophe Bayesian, with a length of more than 180 feet, had 22 passengers and crew aboard when it sank in the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning. Eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. One body was found, and 15 survivors made it to safety. That left six people unaccounted for. Since then, the Italian Coast Guard has been working to find survivors -- and as time passed, what started as a rescue effort became a recovery operation to retrieve bodies from inside the sunken ship. The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR that the operation has been complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily. Who were the missing people? The six passengers who had been unaccounted for include Lynch and his daughter, along with Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife. Judy. A lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda, were also missing in the days after the yacht sank. One member of the crew -- Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef -- also went missing. Local news reports have suggested it was Thomas’ body that was found soon after the ship sank. Who survived the sinking? Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said that as the ship sank, she used all her strength to hold her arms above water and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sofia’s father was also onboard and survived. Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff. Who was Mike Lynch? Lynch, 59, was the founder of Autonomy, a search engine and software company. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal fraud charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems. This past June, a lengthy trial in San Francisco ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him , after he testified on his own behalf.
