The Sunfish combines easy rigging and manageability for a comfortable and hassle-free sailing experience. This is the sailboat loved by all. Designed in 1952 as the ultimate beach craft, the Sunfish sailboat is still a favourite with all ages. This maintenance free boat holds its resale value thanks to its robust construction, highlighted by hard chines and a flat underbody. The Sunfish can be stored almost anywhere and is a snap to car-top, making it a popular international class and easy to transport to your favourite beach for family fun.

The Sunfish has its roots planted firmly in 1947 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Friends Alexander “Al” Bryan and Cortlandt “Cort” Heyniger (the Al and Cort in Alcort) pondered, “How to put a sail on a surfboard?” The answer involved a rejected design for American Red Cross waterfront rescue surfboards, leading to the Sailfish – a lateen rigged, flat-decked, plywood marvel. In 1951, Bryan’s pregnant wife found its flat deck somewhat uncomfortable. The addition of a cockpit and widening of the hull created the Sunfish. The logo was created by Heyniger, who traced a nickel and added fins, the tail and an eye. Early wood Sailfish and Sunfish were available assembled or as kits. In 1959 the introduction of fiberglass and the low cost and ease of production led to the proliferation of Sunfish everywhere. Other improvements included aluminium spars replacing spruce, Dacron sails replacing cotton, ash replacing mahogany for tillers, resulting in increased speed, performance and reliability. Sunfish racing started almost as quickly as two or three boats came together – the first North American Championship was 1963, the first Midwinters was 1965.

Is the SOL Sailboat a Sunfish? Let’s Set the Record Straight!

We get it—our SOL sailboat, built by SERO Innovation, does bear a striking resemblance to the classic Sunfish. In fact, we’ve heard it all: “Is this a Sunfish?” “Is this the new Sunfish?” “Did you copy the Sunfish?” So, let’s dive into the details and clear up the confusion.

The Short Answer: No, the SOL is Not a Sunfish.

But we totally understand why you might think so! The SOL was born from a deep love for small, fun sailboats like the Sunfish, but also from our frustration with the market gap and the inconsistent quality we were seeing in recent years. How do we know this? Because our sister company, Sunfish Direct, has been the largest importer of Sunfish for the past decade. We’ve seen firsthand the changes in the market, and at SERO Innovation, we thought, “What if we could take what we love about the Sunfish and make it even better?”

Why We Built the SOL

The Sunfish has been a beloved part of the sailing world for decades. It’s a boat that’s easy to sail, easy to love, and offers a ton of fun on the water. But over time, we noticed that the Sunfish wasn’t quite what it used to be. We saw an opportunity to improve on this classic design while keeping the spirit of simplicity and fun alive. So, SERO Innovation designed the SOL—a sailboat that keeps the joy of sailing intact while addressing the quality and availability issues that have been frustrating sailors. 

What Makes the SOL Different?

While the SOL might look similar to a Sunfish at first glance, there are key differences that set it apart:

• Spacious Open Cockpit: The SOL’s open cockpit design offers more space and versatility, making it an excellent choice for instructors or for taking a couple kids out on the water. It’s perfect for teaching or simply enjoying a day of sailing with family and friends.
• Customizable Features: The SOL is all about showcasing your style. Choose the sail, blades, handles, padding, splash guard, and accessories that match your unique style. From non-skid padding and extended splash guards to a variety of sails, you can customize your SOL to fit your preferences and needs, making your sailboat truly one-of-a-kind.
• Compatibility with Sunfish Components: The SOL was intentionally designed to be compatible with all Sunfish components. The sail, blades, and spars are identical, so you can easily interchange parts, making the SOL a practical choice for individuals, along with camps, clubs, and sailing schools, who already own Sunfish gear.

There’s Room for Both Boats in the Market

We’re not here to replace the Sunfish—we’re here to offer an alternative. If you’re looking to race in the official Sunfish Class, then the Sunfish might be the right boat for you. However, if you want a recreational boat for your cottage or a fun, durable fleet of boats to teach kids (or adults!) how to sail, the SOL is a great option.

Sunfish Women's North American Championship to be held in Great South Bay

Barbara Meier is on a mission to race or sail her Sunfish in all 50 states. So far, she’s made 42, including Alaska.

On Friday, she found herself in Amityville, where she was gearing up to participate in the Sunfish Women’s North American Championship. The winner will go to the world championship in Ecuador next year and represent the United States.

Meier, 63, only started sailing three years ago and wasn’t expecting to win or even place high. But she was thrilled just to be racing among some of the top women sailors in the country. They came from as far as Washington state and Florida, and ranged from teenagers to women in their 70s who have been sailing for more than six decades. Several were previous national champions.

A practice race took place Friday in Great South Bay off the Dinghy Shop in Amityville, with the full competition set for Saturday and Sunday among some 50 competitors.

“There is no way I should be in a championship regatta,” said Meier, who currently lives in Sarasota, Florida. But the competition was open to anyone, though most were accomplished sailors.

It was a sign of the camaraderie among the women sailors that she said she felt fully accepted and warmly embraced, as top sailors freely gave her advice on everything from how to rig her boat to how to sail upwind.

Another competitor, Libbie Tillman Fitzgerald of Bellevue, Washington, said, “Just sailing with women is unique,” adding that it creates a “female energy.”

The Sunfish is one of the most popular boats on the planet, with at least 500,000 of them produced since it fully came on the scene in the 1960s. It is a spinoff of the Sailfish, which is like a surfboard with a sail on it, originally used by lifeguards for rescues. Boat makers added a cockpit for comfort so people could sit more easily and, along with a few more features, came up with the 14-foot Sunfish.

Jim Koehler, owner of the Dinghy Shop who is hosting the championship and himself a top sailor, said people can learn to sail the relatively simple Sunfish in a day. But to get to the level of the top competitors involves a whole other range of skills, from figuring out water currents and wind shifts, adjusting sails and “hiking out” — that is, leaning off the boat when the wind blows hard.

The single-sail Sunfish is particularly appealing for women because you don’t necessarily have to be big or brawny to sail it, he said. “Women can sail the boat with authority,” he said. “It’s not a male-dominated or strong, big adult boat.”

Lee Parks, a former national women’s Sunfish champion from Newport, Rhode Island, who has been sailing for six decades, said she was thrilled to be at the regatta in Amityville.

“This is going to be phenomenal,” she said. “We love the Great South Bay. It’s just perfect for Sunfish.”

Susan Tillman Berg, whose mother was a Sunfish women’s national champion and whose father was a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic sailing team, said the Dinghy Shop is nationally known in sailing circles and was an ideal place to host the race.

“This is like an icon in the sport,” she said. The trophy for the championship is now named after her late mother, Linda Tillman.

Meier said she had a good day on the bay Friday, as she piles up sailing experiences in places including Lake Tahoe — on both the California and Nevada sides. If she makes it to all 49 states on the mainland, she said, she plans to fly to Hawaii and rent a Sunfish there so she can claim all 50 states.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Once you click on Book Now button and fill out all information required, we will then confirm your request and automatically put chosen boat under option for 3 days, which means nobody else can book it in that period. In those 3 days, in order to confirm your booking you will have to make your first payment as stated in payment plan.

Which boat licence do I need?

To sail a boat in most countries you’ll need an internationally recognized boat licence, such as RYA, ICC, Radio License or CEVNI. However, this rule may vary from one country to another, therefore before departing on your trip we advice you to contact our team to see what kind of licences are accepted.

What is a security deposit?

Security deposit is refundable and you will receive it after check-out (after the boat has been inspected for any damages). However, if you cause damage you are responsible to the amount of security deposit ( it can't be exceeded ) and if your damage is less, the rest will be returned to you. Deposit price depends on the price of the boat.

What is a transit log?

Transit Log is one payment for following services (in most cases) : final cleaning, bed linen, base marina fees, diver check. Transit Log services may differ depending on charter company - you can always contact our support team which will be able to outline the specifics of Transit Log for your booking.
