Sunken superyacht believed to contain watertight safes with sensitive intelligence dataSpecialist divers surveying the wreckage of the US$40 million superyacht that sank off Sicily in August, killing seven people including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, have asked for heightened security to guard the vessel, over concerns that sensitive data locked in its safes may interest foreign governments, multiple sources told CNN. Italian Prosecutors who have opened up a criminal probe into multiple charges of manslaughter and negligent shipwreck think the 56-metre (184-foot) yacht, the Bayesian, may contain highly sensitive data tied to a number of Western intelligence services, four sources familiar with the investigation and salvage operation said. Lynch was associated with British, American and other intelligence services through his various companies, including the cyber security company he founded, Darktrace. That company was sold to Chicago-based private equity firm Thoma Bravo in April. Lynch, whose wife’s company Revtom Limited owned the vessel, was also an adviser to British prime ministers David Cameron and Theresa May on science, technology and cyber security during their tenures, according to British government and public Darktrace records. The sunken vessel, lying on the seabed at a depth of some 50 metres (164 feet), is thought to have watertight safes containing two super-encrypted hard drives that hold highly classified information, including passcodes and other sensitive data, an official involved in the salvage plans, who asked not to be named, told CNN. Specialist divers with remote cameras have searched the boat extensively. - Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories
Initially, local law enforcement feared that would-be thieves might try to reach the wreckage to find expensive jewelry and other objects of value still onboard the yacht, according to divers with the Fire Brigade who spoke with CNN. Now they are concerned that the wreckage, expected to be raised in the coming weeks as part of the criminal investigation into the tragedy, will also be of interest to foreign governments, including Russia and China. They have requested that the yacht be guarded closely, both above water and with underwater surveillance. “A formal request has been accepted and implemented for additional security of the wreckage until it can be raised,” an official with the Sicilian civil protection authority who is assisting with the criminal investigation confirmed to CNN. Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, American attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, British banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and the yacht’s onboard chef Recaldo Thomas died when the ship sank in a violent storm in the early hours of the morning. Preliminary results from autopsies suggest that the Bloomer and Morvillo couples died of suffocation or “dry drowning” when the oxygen in an air bubble in a sleeping cabin ran out. Autopsy results for Lynch and his daughter were less clear. The chef, whose body was found outside the vessel, died by drowning, the coroner said. Toxicology reports on the dead have not yet been released, but none had suffered any physical injuries when the boat went down. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares and 14 others survived, including the captain James Cutfield, who, along with a deckhand and the yacht’s engine room manager, is under investigation for multiple manslaughter and causing a negligent shipwreck. They have all been allowed to leave Italy. Some of the 15 survivors, of whom nine were crew members and six were passengers, including a one-year-old girl, reportedly told prosecutors that Lynch “did not trust cloud services” and always kept data drives in a secure compartment of the yacht wherever he sailed, a source with the prosecutor’s office told CNN. None of the crew or passengers who survived the incident were tested for drugs or alcohol because they were in a “state of shock,” authorities said during a news conference following the recovery of the bodies. Morvillo represented Lynch when he was acquitted in a criminal fraud case in the US in June tied to the takeover by Hewlett Packard of his software company Autonomy, and survivors told investigators that the cruise was a celebration of that acquittal, according to the assistant prosecutor, Raffaele Cammarano. Though Lynch was acquitted of any criminal wrongdoing in the US, Hewlett Packard has indicated it will not drop its bid to collect a US$4 billion civil payout from Lynch’s estate, awarded by a British court in 2022. In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, Lynch’s business partner Stephen Chamberlain — who was his co-defendant in the US fraud case and the former chief operating officer of Darktrace — died on August 19, the same day the Bayesian sank, after being hit by a car while out jogging two days earlier. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told CNN that Cutfield told them Lynch had learned of Chamberlain’s serious condition and had planned to cut the cruise short to return to the UK to see his business partner, who had been on life support. The Bayesian sank a few hours before Chamberlain died in the hospital, his lawyer said. Lynch would not have known of his partner’s death, and Chamberlain was in a coma so would not have known about the shipwreck, Chamberlain’s legal counsel said. - Follow the CTV News channel on WhatsApp
Local prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said no personal effects, including computers, jewelry or Lynch’s hard drives had been recovered from the vessel. However, the onboard hard drives and surveillance cameras tied to the yacht’s navigation system have been brought to investigators to determine if there is any usable data that might indicate how the yacht sank within 16 minutes of the storm hitting. The vessel did not have a traditional black box or voyage data recorder to record navigation data or audio on the bridge. After divers complete surveys of the wreck this week, they will make suggestions for how to best raise the 473-ton vessel without spilling any of the 18,000 litres of oil and fuel still onboard, and how to make sure any sensitive data does not fall into the wrong hands. The costs of raising the ship will fall to its owner, Lynch’s widow, as is mandated by Italian maritime law. The Classic 1988 Feadship Ice Bear is up for bid with Boathouse Auctions. Well kitted out for ... [+] sportfishing, she is also a luxurious superyacht. In 1988, a beautiful new Feadship yacht was built at the Dutch shipyard for Jim Moran. He named it Gallant Lady . Moran, an automotive entrepreneur, would go on to build scores of yachts, seven of which were Feadships. All of his Feadships shared the name Gallant Lady. The fourth Feadship build in the Gallant Lady sequence, this particular edition gained not only length but also in detail far beyond her predecessors. Built with a relatively flat shear and raised bow to the main deck level, the most notable design detail would prove the vertical glass rimming the observation deck. Ice Bear is a true sportfishing yacht, as illustrated by the two fixed fighting chairs backed up by ... [+] a gallery sofa for spectators, and a raising storage compartment behind the sofa to store and protect precious fishing rods and reels. A Little HistoryGallant Lady IV would later be renamed Ice Bear upon becoming the private yacht of Jim Scott, Jr., Chairman and CEO of construction and engineering firm Kiewit, and friend of Warren Buffet. Designed and built with all the expertise and craftsmanship expected of a Feadship, Ice Bear's classic design holds her own quite well with contemporary yachts. Scott owned Ice Bear until his passing in September of 2021. Under his ownership, the yacht was exclusively used for private groups and was meticulously maintained, putting her in a class of her own with regard to condition. Boats for saleMore Sports Sep 21, 2024 | 6:45 AM EDT CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – MARCH 03: Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan looks on in the fourth quarter during their game against the Orlando Magic at Spectrum Center on March 03, 2023 in Charlotte, North Carolina. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by Jacob Kupferman/Getty Images) Sailing off the European islands hosting his friends family, battling it out at the fishing tournament in North Carolina, and a momentary landing in Monaco. Michael Jordan had his summer of 2024 sorted out for him. But seems like a little trip around with his wife Yvette Prieto, enjoying the luxuries, hasn’t come to a hold just yet. The Chicago Bulls legend was recently spotted in Monaco with his wife. In the pictures now viral on social media, he was present at the Stade Louis-II to watch Monaco beat Barcelona in the Champions League . He made the news for having the fans concerned over looking ill. The last time he was in the country was early in August. He had captured quite a few eyes then too. But only for his mode of arrival. Michael Jordan’s newest addition to his luxurious AssetsADVERTISEMENT Article continues below this ad Back in early August, Jordan was seen getting off a 74.5 m Super Yacht costing $115,000,000 . Jordan reportedly purchased it in 2024 from a British billionaire and founder of the Travelex Group, Llyod Dorfman. However, the latter had initially set the price of the yacht at $137,000,000, and Jordan seemed to have clinched a pretty good deal. But who made the yacht? It was built by a yacht builder named Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany in 2018. The yacht was solely made for the British billionaire and initially had the name “ Elandess “. The superyacht has a beam of 12.8 m and a volume of 2065 GT. It can go at a pretty amazing speed of about 16kn as it is powered by two Caterpillar Inc engines. Most interestingly, the interior was solely designed according to the needs of Dorfman by the designer Harrison Eidsgaard. The superyacht is believed to accommodate 12 guests along with a crew of 24 people. But the features of the superyacht don’t end here. It has one of the most unique features that most of the yachts in today’s world don’t have: a Neptune Lounge, which is similar to the Nemo Lounge in the boat “ Savannah “. The concept of this Neptune Lounge is that it features an underwater observation room. Such types of features led the Elandess to win four awards at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards in 2018. When His Airness had got his hands on the superyacht, the name was changed to “ M’BRACE. ” However, this isn’t only insanely expensive that the Chciago Bulls legend owns. The former NBA legend also has a fully custom $61.5 million Gulfstream G550 Private Jet, his Chicago Mansion, which is priced at $14.9 million, his 226-acre golf course by the name Grove XXIII, and even a huge collection of supercars. While some may criticize his luxurious lifestyle, it is clear that he has reached a level of success that only a few can match. Another part of Michael Jordan’s fleet “ The Joy “Yet another inclusion in Jordan’s yatch collection would be “ The Joy “. This vessel is more known to the public world than its larger counterpart. However, there’s a small twist to it. The original owner of “ The Joy ” is an Indian Businessman by the name of Sameer Gehlaut but most of the time the boat is chartered by Jordan for his private parties or vacations. Compared to “ M’BRACE ” this yacht is a little bit smaller in size, 70 m in length. But that doesn’t mean it has less facilities. Winter gardens and a beach club that transforms into a disco, a big pool, and BBQ area, a cutting-edge gym, and a spa center are among the amenities available on the boat, each of which can accommodate up to 12 people. The name “The Joy” itself suggests that this yacht is a source of pleasure and relaxation for Jordan. Growth indeed for someone scared of the waters. Stay tuned for more such updates and join us for the exciting second episode of the “Dual Threat Show” as our host BG12 sits down with Georgia Bulldogs star and Mountain West All-Freshman Team Selection, Asia Avinger. Italian divers surveying the shipwreck have called for more security to protect the site, and prosecutors investigating the fatal accident are concerned the vessel has data tied to Western intelligence services, according to the report. In particular, divers who have searched the Bayesian yacht with remotely operated cameras think two watertight safes onboard contain super-encrypted hard drives that hold highly classified information like passcodes and other sensitive data, CNN said. Lynch had ties to British, U.S. and other spy agencies through his companies, including cybersecurity firm Darktrace , the report said, adding that his wife was also an adviser to former British prime ministers David Cameron and Theresa May on science, technology and cybersecurity. “A formal request has been accepted and implemented for additional security of the wreckage until it can be raised,” the Sicilian Civil Protection Agency told CNN. Darktrace and authorities for Termini Imerese, whose prosecutors are leading the probe, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Bayesian sank last month off the coast of Italy amid a violent storm. Eight people died, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Authorities are looking into possible reasons why the yacht quickly sank , when other boats nearby seemed to weather the same storm without issue. Prosecutors in Italy have launched a probe into the shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide, which are equivalent to manslaughter charges. Meanwhile, the sale of Darktrace to a software-focused private equity firm is moving forward. In April, Thoma Bravo agreed to buy Darktrace for $5.3 billion, and shareholders voted to approve the deal in June. The acquisition is expected to be completed by year’s end. Earlier this month, Darktrace cofounder and CEO Poppy Gustafsson stepped down and was replaced by COO Jill Popelka. Gustafsson started Darktrace in 2013 alongside a team of mathematicians, entrepreneurs, and intelligence experts. She previously worked as a corporate controller at Lynch’s Autonomy before its controversial $11.7 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard. Lynch was an early backer of Darktrace through his venture capital fund Invoke Capital and held around 3% of the company when he died. Also this month, Hewlett-Packard said it will continue to pursue Lynch for $4 billion through his family. HP accused Lynch of fraud after its $11.7 billion Autonomy purchase in 2011. Lynch was acquitted in a U.S. criminal fraud trial in June, but HP hasn’t dropped a civil case in the U.K. Latest in TechCalifornia cracks down on social media platforms sending addictive feeds to kidsOpenAI’s newest creation is raising shock, alarm, and horror among staffers: a new logoNew Boeing CEO shakes up leadership, announces first departureMagnificent Seven stocks are riding high again after Fed cutYouTube will now play ads over paused screens, giving users fewer options to dodge themMost popular. Fire sinks 31m vintage Broward Marine yacht The Admiral in Marina del Rey, CaliforniaThe 30.5-metre Broward Marine yacht The Admiral has sunk following a fire while docked in Marina del Rey, California. The LA County fire department responded to reports of a fire at 8.33pm yesterday (18 September). Two people were on board at the time but were able to evacuate without injuries. According to local reports, the interior flames were resistant to firefighters' efforts and the yacht quickly began to list. Authorities were forced to evacuate at approximately 10.30pm. At the time of writing, The Admiral is now almost completely submerged. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, though several firework explosions were documented by eyewitnesses. The yacht has discharged red-dye diesel into the water, according to the United States Coast Guard, who are collaborating with the Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover any pollution. The Admiral has a fuel capacity of 6,000 gallons. The Admiral was delivered by US shipyard Broward Marine in 1986. Exterior design was completed in house while her interior is owed to US-based studio Robin Rose . Accommodation is across four cabins, including a master suite and all equipped with flatscreen televisions, entertainment centres and en suite facilities. The yacht was listed for sale in 2018 at a last known asking price of $985,000. The incident is ongoing. BOAT International will update the story as it develops.
