"Your plans for the Amigo are remarkable. If I had questions, I just needed to keep reading and the answers were there. Very complete and accurate. The boat is fair and sails well." -Mark Lemahieu

Although our AMIGO may seem compact, this pocket cruiser offers the seaworthiness, comfort, and features of much larger vessels, but at an affordable price. Not to be confused with the lighter, less able weekender-types of similar length, this is a heavy boat capable of serious long-distance offshore and coastal cruising. Yet AMIGO is a boat that is easy to handle in either the masthead or gaff sloop rig, even by the single hander. Best of all, it's trailerable. A most notable feature aboard AMIGO is the standing headroom throughout the cabin area, a remarkable feat considering the very attractive and well-proportioned appearance. Another clever feature is the fully enclosed toilet room with stall shower formed by a series of hinged panels. These panels fold back when not needed, hiding the head from view while opening up the cabin for spaciousness. The divided cabin offers dual cabin privacy, something seldom seen on a 22' boat. Other features of AMIGO include two hanging lockers, a dinette that converts to form a berth, an aft quarter berth, a 4' long galley, and a huge ice box with loading and access from the cockpit or galley. Storage space is located in every nook and cranny, including a separate locker at the stern for stove fuel with overboard drains for safety. The cockpit is self draining and long enough to sleep in. For range there is a 50 gallon fresh water capacity. Aimed at the amateur who prides himself on quality workmanship and perseverance, building AMIGO will be a rewarding experience that will draw the admiration from on-lookers. Plans are available for either wood-strip or "one-off" fiberglass construction.

These COMPLETE PLANS to build in Strip-Plank WOOD include FULL SIZE PATTERNS for all station, transom, and stem form contours, deck crown and cabin cambers, plus gaff and masthead rig, and inboard or outboard power options. Includes instructions, Table of Offsets, and hull materials listing.

Relieving news, Stu. I hope to see Max around here again soon. Best.
I cannot resist the temptation to quote David Harding at this month's issue of Practical Boat Owner (page 34). "If you want a boat that has the look, feel and handling of a big boat, you have two choices. One is to buy a big boat. The other is to buy something older and much smaller -such as an Elizabethan 23, for example. Let me explain. By and large, sailing yachts have become more dinghy-like over the past 20 years or so -and this applies much to cruisers as to those designed for racing. They're lighter, beamier, flatter-sectioned and broader in the stern. Their keels are shorter in the chord and the mainsails bigger and tweakier. As a result they're faster in most conditions and on most points of sail than their equivalents from earlier decades, but this extra performance is often at the expense of a relaxing ride. Many modern cruisers are surprisingly demanding to sail: they need to be kept relatively upright; rig tuning and sail trim are critical; they can't be left to look after themselves without the help of an autopilot; they slam in a seaway and they broach with little warning. This isn't quite as bad as it sounds. Design developments over the past few years have produced some wonderful boats. Some equally wonderful types of boat, however, are not longer built. Take the Liz 23 as an example. Here is a beautifully proportioned cutter cruiser that looks like a scaled-down 33 footer. If you see her in isolation, only the size of the crew gives away her diminutive size. She has an slim hull and a long shallow keel with a steel centreplate for extra bite to winward. She retains her balance when heeled, remaining light on the helm and showing no inclination to broach. She slices through the seas, has remarkable directional stability and makes life far gentler for her crew than most modern boats of similar size. This is a little boat that feels much bigger than you would imagine. Her designer and original builder, Peter Webster, described her as a 'real yacht in miniature'. I heard this echoed by a sailmaker who owns a modern 32-footer and tried her in fresh conditions. 'She sails like a proper big boat,' he said. There are plenty of reasons why boats like this aren't build any more. The two main ones are that they would cost too much and not enough people would buy them. They were designed and built at a time when people often treated a 23-footer as a passage-maker in which crossing the Channel was a routine part of a cruising or racing calendar. These days a 23-footer is seen by many people as day-sailer: if you want to go further afield you buy something bigger." No comments. Cheers.

This one has sailed from Sweden to Peru 8and back) and is now for sale at 55.000 SEK (7.000 Euros?). http://www.blocket.se/vi/15432239.htm?
Really heavy little boat, Raggi, with some surprising numbers: AMIGO 23 Length/Beam Ratio (2Lwl + Lh)/3B = 1,72 (wide!) Ballast/Disp Ratio W/Disp = 0,45 Displacement/Length Ratio D/L = 672,57 (wow!) Sail Area/Disp. Ratio SA/D = 8,26 (very low!) Hull speed HSPD = 5,64 Kn Potential Maximum Speed PMS = 4,93 Kn Velocity Ratio VR = 0,87 Capsize Safety Factor CSF = 2,21 (not nice!) Motion Comfort Ratio MCR = 26,87 Roll Period T = 2,61 Sec Roll Acceleration Acc = 0,13 G's (not nice!) Stability Index SI = 0,76 (not nice!) Angle of Vanishing Stability AVS = 124 º (Basic info taken from http://www.sailboatdata.com/viewreco...?class_ID=3527 ) Let's compare with the FLICKA 20, not a greyhound either: FLICKA 20 Length/Beam ratio (2Lfl+Lh)/3B = 2,42 Ballast/Disp Ratio Ball/Disp = 0,3 Displacement/Length Ratio D/L = 446,35 Sail Area/Disp. Ratio SA/D = 11,59 Hull speed HSPD = 5,71 Kn Potential Maximum Speed PMS = 5,64 Kn Velocity Ratio VR = 0,99 Capsize Safety Factor CSF = 1,76 Motion Comfort Ratio MCR = 30,81 Roll Period T = 2,78 Sec Roll Acceleration Acc = 0,07 G's Stability Index SI = 1,14 Angle of Vanishing Stability AVS = 128 º By these numbers Amigo 23 seems to be a super heavy, uncomfortable and slow one. Also her CSF well over 2 may indicate a not safe enough ocean-going boat, although my estimated STIX for her is in the range of 36-37, which is extraordinarily high for this size of boat (Cat A begins in 32) Anyhow she has sailed to Peru and back from Sweden, haven't she....? Cheers.
Well, yes she did that journy, but I have never seen the boat or sailed it. It's regarded as a strongly built little boat for coastal cruising.

Im looking at the Ted Brewer Thursdays Child design as a retirement cruiser I see you mentioned him in your post Im still doing a feasibility study on the basic design and will measure my options from there I was curious how some of you feel about the sea worthiness of this design Ill be sailing the inside passage mostly but also coasting along the western sea board and Hawaii ( big wave territory ) Ive heard nothing but good things about Ted and his work any one have experience with this boat thanks B

Good offers from European sailboat market every 48 hours

Amigo 23

Amigo 23 sailboat with inboard engine for € 900.

Today we’re having an excellent offer, Amigo 23 sailboat with inboard engine for € 900. Location: Sweden

Length: 6.8 meters Width: 2.3 meters Draft: 1.12 meters Sleeping places: 4 Engine: inboard Galley (kitchen): available

For my opinion it’s a splendid long-keel yacht. This model is often equipped with an outboard motor but in this case inboard Volvo Penta (9 h.p.) is installed.

The ads says that engine works good and has been serviced every year. The boat itself is in good condition, too, genoa roll, the hull without damages, navigation lights and sails are in order. The owner also says that there’s a lot of new small equipment on the sailboat (like moorings and extra ropes and fuel cans, for example). ⠀

In my view, the offer is really a gift for € 900: a really good boat for its money, moreover, it has a inboard engine which is so rare for small boats. ⠀

Review of Amigo 23

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Amigo 23 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.12 - 1.22 meter (3.67 - 3.97 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The Amigo 23 has been equipped with different engine alternatives.

Alternative 1:

The boat may be equipped with an inboard Vire 7 engine at 7 hp (5 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.2 knots

Alternative 2:

Amigo 23 may be equipped with an inboard Albin diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Amigo 23 is 1.91, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Amigo 23 is about 83 kg/cm, alternatively 465 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 83 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 465 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 9m 2 (96 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

telling the story of the circumnavigation of the Baltic and Botnia last summer...

Back to your question, you obviously want to go on your 'own keel', and why shouldn't you?

I am following the trip of 'Valkyrien' too, and a Leisure 23 is a sturdy little boat for off-shore work.

A couple of others are: Hurley 22, Westerly Nomad, Havsfidra and Storfidra (swedish designs) and of course the folkboat and it's derivates. For example IF-boat and Contessa 26.

These small boats are sturdy and nice, but might need some modifications before ocean-crossing but people have sailed around the world in lesser crafts.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron.

  6. Amigo 23 with a Tohatsu engine (optional) for only 400 euros!

Amigo 23 is an excellent boat for start and short passages for less than 500 euros. Reliable long keel and shallow draft. The interior and cushions look good. By these numbers Amigo 23 seems to be a super heavy, uncomfortable and slow one. Also her CSF well over 2 may indicate a not safe enough ocean-going boat, although my estimated STIX for her is in the range of 36-37, which is extraordinarily high for this size of boat (Cat A begins in 32)

Maybe the Amigo 27 but then it is costing much more.
