Sunset Luaus at Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
Known as San Diego’s tropical hideaway with luxurious accommodations, it’s no surprise that Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa knows how to throw a summer party up to royal standards. The Sunset Luaus on the Bay have remained a summer tradition every year, hosting events every Tuesday and Friday evening through September.
For more than two centuries, Hawaiians and Polynesian people have been celebrating a major societal change thanks to King Kamehameha II’s ruling that allowed men and women to eat together. This cultural culmination is known as the luau.
Upon arrival at Sunset Luaus on the Bay, attendees walk through the Polynesian-themed lodge of Catamaran Resort Hotel before landing at the luau venue overlooking the iconic Mission Bay . Guests are not only welcomed with leis placed around their necks, but also Mai Tai cocktails, a staple concoction.
Between the live music and signature drinks, guests get to know their fellow table mates. Whether they’re seated with longtime friends or acquaintances they just met, it’s the start of an evening where everyone becomes family.
On stage, the host walks attendees through the ceremony of the evening. The Kalua roast pig is introduced first, as the delicacy has been cooking underground for hours in preparation of the feast. Guests are then released to indulge in the impressive all-you-can-eat display of luau dishes. From spicy bay shrimp and Huli Huli chicken to shoyu jasmine fried rice and traditional macaroni salad, there’s something for everyone (and plenty of it).
The feast isn’t all that guests have to revel in throughout the night. As the sun begins to wane, the Pride of Polynesia, a San Diego-based dance revue group, immerses guests in an authentic luau experience. Through performances from Hawaii, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Samoa and New Zealand, the entertainers not only story tell each island’s culture, but also create immersive experiences for those looking to participate on stage.
To close out the evening, the Pride of Polynesia delivers one final show-stopping performance: Polynesian fire dancing.
Sunset Luaus on the Bay are every Tuesday and Friday evening until Sept. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (doors open for VIP at 5:30 p.m.). Tickets start at $110 for adults and $60 for children (up to age 12). For more information about Sunset Luaus at Catamaran Resort, visit www.catamaranresort.com/sunset-luaus .

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
Explore the exotic side of san diego.
The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round.
Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests.
The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti.
At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.
On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy happy hour specials Monday-Friday. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms.
Guests may also choose to grab a bite at Lava Java, the on-site grab and go café, or poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet.
Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Operating seasonally, the Bahia Belle is a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi-style boat that provides a 45-minute sightseeing cruise of Mission Bay. The 74-foot, 3-story sternwheeler boat offers an observation deck to view the beautiful sites of the 4,200-acre aquatic park.
The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more.
Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport.

Polynesian paradise at catamaran resort and spa in san diego.

Travels with Greg
By Greg ARAGON
My 6-year-old son has never left California. So when he said the Catamaran Resort and Spa ( www.catamaranresort.com ) in San Diego is more fun than Hawaii, I took it with a grain of salt.
But then I started thinking. He has a good point. The tropical island-inspired Catamaran has everything a kid and his family love. It offers a big, beautiful swimming pool, a sandy beach, spacious rooms and suites, bike rentals, a video arcade, an onsite restaurant and lots of opportunities to make new friends.
Our getaway to the Catamaran Resort began recently when we checked into a gorgeous bay front suite overlooking San Diego’s stunning Mission Bay. Spanning 438 square feet, the room was highlighted by a large patio that is literally steps from the sandy beach.
The suite also boasted a big private bedroom with two queen beds and a large TV, a separate living area with another big TV, a pullout sofa, a wet bar with a refrigerator and a dining area. A large and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower completed the room’s layout.
Beyond the suite, the rest of the property is just as impressive. Featuring 310 rooms, the sprawling Polynesian-themed resort is surrounded by palm trees, waterfalls, koi ponds, exotic birds and lush vegetation.
The hotel is located in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community and sits on the shores of Mission Bay, a large, artificial saltwater bay created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding and sunbathing.
One of my family’s favorite spots at the resort was Mission Bay’s sandy beach located steps from our patio. Here the kids made sand castles and played in the water while we relaxed in lawn chairs, soaking rays and admiring the coastline.
The beach was also where we rented a 21-ft Hurricane powerboat and cruised around the bay for a fun-filled hour. We rented the boat from Action Sports Rentals ( www.actionsportrentals.com/catamaran-resort-hotel-spa/ ), which has a booth on the dock in front of the Catamaran Resort.
It was an epic voyage. After learning how to control the vessel and finding the proper speed for the bay, we cruised into the morning sun. Along the way we waved to boaters and paddle boarders, sailed beneath an old bridge and past expensive condos and luxury hotels. The boat was easy to maneuver, had lots of seating and shade and was a perfect family outing for the afternoon.
After mooring the boat, we went to the resort’s large pool area where my kids played in the water and made new friends. Secluded behind tall palm trees, the pool is a tropical oasis with lots of seating, a Jacuzzi and a bar. Each day, the pool area offered a free kids’ program for hotel guests.
Next to the pool is also a video arcade, full of free games for kids and their parents. My son and I had a great time there, shooting basketballs, racing cars and playing foosball.
From the pool, we walked along a lush, tropical path to Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s on-site signature restaurant. Boasting beachfront dining with spectacular views of Mission Bay, Oceana serves creative, coastal California dishes with an eclectic flare. The restaurant, led by executive chef Paul Arias, won Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants for Everyday Eats, ranking 10 th best in the U.S.
Our dinner at Oceana began with a delicious bowl of New England style clam chowder with bacon, red bliss potato, thyme, cream and steamed little neck clams on top and mixed in. I am a major chowder fan and this bowl had the perfect amount of creaminess along with a perfect clam to potato ratio, making it one of the best I’ve had.
The restaurant also specializes in sushi and when we sampled the Oceana House Roll we fell in love. The rolls are exquisitely filled with eel, tempura shrimp, crab, Nori, avocado and unagi sauce. This dish is a work of culinary art.
We completed our dinner at Oceana with a succulent grilled prime hanger steak with smoked potato puree, watercress, cippolini and macadamia chimichurri; and a tasty Hawaiian style pad Thai with stir fried vegetables, tofu, pineapple, chili, macadamia nuts, cilantro and soy.
After dinner we strolled along the beach and watched the sun fall into Mission Bay.
The next morning we had potatoes and eggs, and a plate of chilaquiles for breakfast at Oceana, and then rented a surrey bike from Action Sports Rentals. We then pedaled around the bay. Along the way we saw sailboarders fling over waves and then stopped at a park for the kids to play.
Back at the resort we watched a demonstration featuring the hotel’s exotic parrots including vibrant macaws, beautiful cockatoos and a lilac-crowned amazon. Some of the birds talk and can say things like “hi,” “hello” and “goodbye.” The parrots are available to view outside daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time, depending on the weather.
We concluded the day at the resort’s Sunset Luau. Held on the shores of Mission Bay, the luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music and dances perfect for family and friends. The party begins with a lei with real flowers and a delicious Mai Tai. This was followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian-inspired rice and salads and various succulent meats including pork, chicken and fish.
Local luau group Pride of Polynesia provided authentic island music and dance featuring hula and fiery torch dancers. Kids also got a chance to hula dance and participate in activities at the Kids Corner where they made flowered leis, festive crafts, colored and played with stick-on tattoos.
Catamaran Resort and Spa is located at 3999 Mission Blvd. in San Diego CA 92109. For more information and reservations call (858) 488-1081 or visit www.catamaranresort.com .

Have the tower rooms been remodeled if so where are they located?
They have not been remodeled. We just stayed there earlier this week. They are in the Tower which is about the center of the resort. All the other buildings are only 2 stories while the Tower is 12, I believe.
Is this an all inclusive hotel?

The 5 star review is for the WAY THEY HANDLED THINGS, which was AWESOME, not necessarily for the resort and rooms, etc. As some have mentioned, it is a little dated in the rooms, but not too bad in our opinion, as the location right on the water makes up for it. I'm assuming they will be updating it all in the near future.... We were here for just 3 days; for my daughter and I to spread my mom's ashes, and for my daughter who has been sick for 3 yrs, to be able to see some good friends. Our first room had a few problems, like a broken shower arm/head, and very loud road noise. When we contacted the front desk the next morning, we were lucky enough to get Angie, who was wonderful. She was kind and understanding, and put us into a much nicer room (and surprisingly quiet for being next to the walking/biking/skating path) right on the water for the same price :) I wish we could have stayed there longer, as it had a large, private, lushly landscaped patio with dining table, tiki torches, lounge chairs and fire pit, and all fenced in for privacy and security, but you could still see the beach and water, and enjoy watching the people going by. Outside of this fenced "backyard" there were 2 other patios with lounge chairs and tables that were also for the room. There was great communication, and no stress, which we really appreciated. We would definitely stay here again, as we never had a single person who wasn't nice to us, AND as a cool bonus, the resort has at least 6 rare, tropical birds (parrots, and others) who are in a big cage in the middle of their lushly landscaped center area that put on a show with a trainer who they must hire to do that. It was fun to watch, and there are beautiful ponds in that area as well, filled with huge Koi and ducks, so that was peaceful and fun to to just relax and watch. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and appreciate VERY MUCH the kindness shown to us from Angie and her team. Thank you again so very much!
My previous yelp review caused some discomfort, they had to remove it. -5 out of 10.
For now I would rate this a 3-4 We originally wanted a ada room since we are a family filed with handicaps It was not easy for my son but he managed First thing that happened was our carpet was soaked from the fridge being turned off not fun getting pairs of socks u just slapped on wet and soaked. Dead Fruit flies in the freezer, side of the bathroom was not cleaned, handle on the dresser broke off, handle for the tub was hard to turn on and to turn in back off without dripping, phone was broken But honestly it is what it is. I think the location is great. All the tiny things can be easily fixed on my own and for the other things resort handled everything professionally Our children enjoyed everything Yes it's outdated but it reminded me of hotels From my home town. Food is awesome! I've never ate so much carbs lol The rosemary bread is to die for As I write this review. Im still a guest until next week Staff is very accommodating This is a reminder that nothing is perfect and sometimes ppl make the best memories When things go sideways Removed 1 star for here me out The hotel does not come with a water extractor machine for wet suits would have been great in the locker room pool side Picture will be posted later and a new review to add on will also be revised

Dear Jacquelyn, thank you for staying with us. We apologize for the wet carpet and fruit flies. It's gratifying to know that you had a great experience with our staff and you enjoyed our tasty cuisine. We hope you return soon for another amazing vacation.
Barely a 2-star experience that I'm typing this from my room. customer service is nonexistent. Every staff member we encountered couldn't care less about our stay. Hard to believe we paid over $600 per night for this mess. Despite multiple in-person requests for basic housekeeping, our room was never cleaned. We informed the front desk staff (at least five of them), who assured us multiple times that someone would take care of it, but nothing happened. When we returned to our unmade room with no towels for the third time and called the front desk again, we were met with attitude and told there was no one available to help. And well, our "king suite" is just an average hotel room. Will never come back here.

Dear Ashley, thank you for your stay and feedback. Our goal is to ensure our guests have an enjoyable visit and we apologize for falling short of that. Your feedback has been communicated to our management and housekeeping teams as we strive to enhance our services. We look forward to the opportunity to offer you the outstanding stay that you should expect from us.
Beautiful hotel. It's on the older side, but they have renovated most of the rooms. The tower rooms aren't renovated yet. We stayed at the garden view 2 queens room. Although I wish we had a bay view room, our room did not disappoint. We had a view of the Koi ponds and you can see them swimming from our balcony. The grounds are decorated with lots of tropical plants and trees. They have parrots who talk that entertained my kids. The beach is walking distance from our room. Very cool! Over all I'd stay again and try to take advantage of the amenities! Why the 4 stars and not five? Spider webs all over the place!! Dead bugs on spider webs just hanging around the hall ways and the balcony. The free coffee in the rooms sucks! The wanna be kuerig did the job but it still sucked! lol for the price you pay, I'd wish it was decent coffee.

Dear Jess, thank you for writing about your recent stay at Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. We are thrilled to hear you had a wonderful stay and you enjoyed the Koi Pond and tropical lush landscape. My husband and I were in San Diego for our baby moon and a spa day was definitely a MUST for us (more so for me but hey, he reaps the benefits). We both got a massage (prenatal massage for me) and a facial - both were about 50 mins long for each service. We hung out in their lounge in between services and that provided great ambiance for relaxation. The locker rooms were great and had all the essentials that you'll need after your spa day, including access to their sauna! At the end of our facial service, our esthetician even provided a 'skin prescription' for us based on our skincare needs so that was really cool. Only reason why I'm giving 4 stars and not 5 stars is due to the booking system because it was super confusing. While I did get an email and phone call confirmation, I didn't realize that I had booked the facials for the both of us at a later time during the day and not right after our massages (we received our massages first and then facials) for it to be back to back. The receptionist was very nice and explained to us that there was only one esthetician on site at that time so that was the only way for them to accommodate us. We were going to cancel the facials but then ended up not doing so because they were going to charge for the service regardless if we received it or not so we decided to stay at the resort until our facial services, which were about 3 hours apart after the conclusion of our massage services. Otherwise, we had a very relaxing day at this spa location!

Fantastic stay! Before visiting customer service was super helpful over the phone and took down our requests. We booked a pool side room. Although it didn't come with a microwave. I made a request before hand and luckily we were able to get one in our room without an additional charge. Upon arrival the person at the desk Randy was super helpful. Gave us a rundown of everything, told us where to park etc . Room was clean and they brought in our crib and microwave before we got into the room. Our stay was amazing , scenery was so beautiful. Kids loved the hotel cat, ponds, and birds . The pool was so fun. We had a blast at the arcade as well ! Loved that this hotel including clean pool towels for convenience. Next to the pool was daily kid crafts . We made cute keepsakes while we were there ! The kids also were able to do the movie on the bay and ice cream social on Wednesday! We had a scavenger hunt given to us by the front desk and afterwards the kids turned it in to the Java cafe for a baked treat. Gift shop was REASONABLY PRICED ! Which is something I never thought I'd say! My kids were able to pick out some goodies under $10! ( bracelets , necklaces , notebooks) We ordered room service a few nights and the food was INCREDIBLE! The portions were HUGE. The kids meals could easily feed an adult and came with a scoop of ice cream ! Win win Restaurants are within walking distance. We tried world famous. The food was incredible, great portions and had a view. Beach was fun and clean . We did yoga on the beach in the am (8:30) and it was just so beautiful and the ladies we had instructing us were amazing ! Also kid friendly. Afterwards checking out was an absolute breeze and zero hidden fees were found once checking out ! 1)One thing I will say is poolside can be loud, however didn't bother any my kids including a baby sleeping . The curfew at 10pm was always enforced which made things perfect. 2) no top latch on the hotel doors. Also wasn't a huge problem for us . 3) make sure to ask for utensils and condiments when ordering room service . One night they were slammed and I ran down for some. Again totally understandable

I attended the summer sunset luau and Ricardo was incredible. He got us great seats and a few complimentary drinks because my fiancé and I are locals. The views were amazing and the service is unbeatable. I'd highly recommend this if you want to take your date to something tropical and magical.
Dear guest, thank you for letting us know how much you enjoyed our sunset luau experience. We hope you visit us again soon. Great pictures. Best wishes from our team.
This hotel is awful - children screaming and crying, no room cleaning or room service over our 4 day stay, no late checkout, WORST HOTEL BEDS EVER AND BED BUGS!!!!!!!!! pillows are not pillows they are completely flat we had to walk a mile to and from the front desk constantly it was the most unrelaxing and inconvenient vacation i have ever had and they should be providing me some sort of refund.... my car is more comfy than this hotel... also the water pressure in the shower is non existent and the soap is orange scented so if you want to stay here you have been warned... worst experience ever
Rooms are still very dated but it's about on par with what you can get for Mission Bay Area. The amenities though are awesome. Always a fun stay with lots to do. Plus the pool is awesome. So recommended depending on what your priorities are.

I coordinated with the Catamaran to host a private luau and buffet for my company. We got a lot of positive feedback about the event from our guests at the end of the night - many of them were hoping we could do it again next year!
