The Mark Twain Riverboat brings the mystique of the Mississippi River and the history of Hannibal to life through one-hour sightseeing cruises, two-hour dinner cruises, and the Captain's Sunday Lunch events.
Schedule can vary, call for times.
The Mark Twain Riverboat has been a unique fixture on the banks of the Mississippi for more than 30 years, offering visitors an up-close view of the Mississippi River during 1-hour narrated sightseeing cruises or 2-hour dinner cruises.
Hannibal river cruises give visitors the opportunity to explore the Mississippi just like Tom and Huck. This Mississippi River Cruise departs from Center Street Landing three times daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with two departures daily during September and October. Dinner cruises depart at 6:30 p.m; check for availability. Built in 1964, the Mark Twain Riverboat is 120 ft. long, 33 ft. wide and has a 400-passenger capacity, so there is plenty of room aboard the vessel, which is wheelchair accessible (w/ some limitations.)
If you have an afternoon to spare in Hannibal, the Mark Twain Riverboat is a must-stop. One-hour sightseeing cruises on the river include commentary on river history, legends, and sights. You will see Jackson’s Island, Lover’s Leap, and of course, the Mighty Mississippi rolling along. Beverages and sandwiches are available on-ship for purchase during these tours. A cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat is great for family events. Whether you are a visitor or resident of Hannibal, you can make wonderful memories aboard our unique riverboat experience!
For an extended Mississippi River cruise, be sure to reserve your spot on a 2-hour dinner cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat.
Guests aboard Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruises are treated to live music, a buffet meal featuring Riverboat Roast Beef, Baked Boneless Chicken Breast, Baked Potatoes, Seasoned Green Beans, the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad, a Deluxe Tossed Salad, Dinner Rolls and Dessert. Iced Tea and Coffee are included, and a cash bar is also available.
Once on board, you are escorted to your table, then you are free to roam the boat until the captain announces that dinner is ready. After dinner, you are free to dance or sit back and enjoy the music. Live entertainment is included on Dinner Cruises. It may be The Rivermen playing modern jazz (Saturday night from Memorial Day thru September), or you might get to enjoy the music of Tim Hart (Mondays & Tuesdays), or Adam Ledbetter and David Damm (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Listen or dance to their favorite tunes — and they have been known to take a request or two. And you never know when a crew member or two may step up on the stage and join in.
It’s a fun night of music for the young and the young at heart! The dancefloor is available after dinner if you are so inclined, or you can choose to dance under the stars on the outer decks (no dancing on the tables and chairs, please).
Enjoy lunch and a cruise on a lovely Sunday! The dockside meal includes a buffet of Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Seasoned Green Beans, Deluxe Lettuce Salad with dressing, Dinner Roll, and the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad. Iced tea, coffee and water accompany the meal. Top all of this with a delicious Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie.
Following lunch, enjoy a delightful one-hour sightseeing cruise on the “Mighty Mississippi” complete with river history, facts about Mark Twain, riverboat stories, and a few (or more!) tall-tales.
Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. Departure from the dock will be at 1:30 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m.
We hope you will join us for a delicious meal and casual river cruise; where you’re sure to become more like family by the time the landing whistle blows across the hills of Hannibal!

Sail past stunning castles, quaint towns, and vineyards on these Rhine River cruises.
Courtesy of Riverside Luxury Cruises
River cruising has grown in popularity in recent years, with new lines offering unique ways to experience Europe’s most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Douro, Seine, and, of course, the Rhine. “The Rhine River is famous for castles, cathedrals, historic sites, and medieval towns, offering majestic scenery as you travel through several European countries. You feel as if you’ve traveled back to a different time in our world,” Travel + Leisure A-list advisor Olga Placeres says.
On most Rhine River cruises, guests can explore on their terms, making this a great trip idea for multi-generational travel. From family-friendly trips to beer-focused itineraries to festive holiday cruises, here are 10 of the best Rhine River cruises for every type of traveler.
Courtesy of AmaWaterways
Cruise expert Placeres named AmaWaterways one of her favorite river cruise lines. This family-owned and operated line offers all-inclusive river cruises with a range of shore excursions for both active and relaxed travelers. Several Rhine River cruises are available, and a few include the Moselle and Main Rivers. Christmas market cruises and wine-focused itineraries are also offered.
The Enchanting Rhine cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland, where passengers board their vessel (while the specific ship varies depending on the dates, all carry fewer than 170 guests). In Breisach, Germany, guests can choose a wine country bike tour, walking tour, or hike in the Black Forest. The cruise continues to Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Rüdesheim, with options each day for active or relaxed excursions. The scenic Rhine River Gorge area is a highlight, and there are visits to Cologne and Düsseldorf before arriving in Amsterdam.
Courtesy of Viking River Cruises
Placeres also recommends Viking Cruises, which was established by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and operates river, ocean, and expedition cruises across all seven continents. Viking’s Rhine River cruises range from eight to 15 days, and itineraries go beyond the Rhine to include the Main, Moselle, and a voyage that goes across the North Sea to Norway’s fjords.
The Rhine and Main Explorer begins in Nuremberg and continues to Bamberg for a walking tour through the winding streets of the medieval city. Cruise highlights include palace tours in Würzburg, local Bavarian culture and food in Marktheidenfeld, scenic sailing on the Main River, touring the charming French city of Strasbourg, and admiring Germany's famous Black Forest. The tour ends with two nights in Basel, where you can take a tour of the city and enjoy cheese fondue.
8-day rhine river cruise.
Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, but they also offer adults-only (18+) experiences on Europe’s rivers. Instead of setting sail on a Disney Cruise Line mega ship, these itineraries use AmaWaterways river ships for a more intimate experience with a maximum of 156 guests. Travel writer Terry Ward took her six and seven year olds and her 18-year-old niece on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise in July. “I can confirm it’s a trip with total multigenerational appeal,” Ward says. “There were always multiple options for shore excursions — something to interest passengers across the board.”
“During a port of call in Germany’s Black Forest region, for example, we could choose a toboggan run through the forest with time spent carving wooden toys and learning to make butter, visiting Europa Park, or enjoying the medieval old town of Riquewihr.” Ward tells T+L, “On several nights, Disney’s Adventure Guides whisked the kids off to the lounge for their own fun — maybe a Disney movie and dinner or games — so the adults could try the chef’s tasting table or enjoy a quieter dinner. Teens had their own tables for dinner if they wished.” Ward added, “The Adventure Guides hailed from some of the countries we sailed through, so traveling with them in Europe felt a bit like being along for the ride with an in-the-know friend.”
Courtesy of Avalon Waterways
After nearly a century in European tourism, the Globus family of brands launched Avalon Waterways in 2004, and it was ranked among the top river cruise lines in the world by T+L readers in 2024. Avalon’s Rhine River cruises range from five days to 11 days; several include the Moselle, and they offer seasonal Christmas market cruises.
The Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts cruise is a round-trip cruise from Amsterdam offered in the spring, with a beer expert on board to host lectures, beer tastings, and food and beer pairings. The ship heads to Rotterdam for a walking tour, bike ride, or a guided excursion to Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe” with over seven million tulips. In Antwerp and Ghent, guests can choose between bike or walking tours, while guided tours in Willemstad take guests among centuries-old buildings. In Amsterdam, guests can take a guided canal cruise followed by a Dutch beer experience.
Courtesy of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
Founded in 1976, Uniworld is a luxurious, all-inclusive cruise line that offers itineraries on Europe's famous rivers. Uniworld's Rhine River cruises start at eight days, but travelers with more time can combine the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers on a 25-day, eight-country cruise.
The eight-day Rhine River Valley cruise boards in Nuremberg and cruises to Bamberg where guests can choose a walking tour, nature park hike, or brewery tour. In Würzburg, an 18th-century palace tour or wine tasting are options; additional stops include Miltenberg, Mainz, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, and Breisach, before disembarking in Basel.
This century-old, family-owned company offers travel experiences in more than 100 destinations, ranging from small-group tours to river cruises. Tauck’s Rhine River cruise itineraries range from eight days to the 15-day Grand European Cruise that covers nine countries along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.
The eight-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure is a Tauck Bridges family cruise designed for guests of all ages. The cruise departs from Basel, and the next day, guests travel by rail to Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne to ride the world’s steepest cog-wheel train. In Strasbourg, there’s a French sing along and chocolate tasting. The family-focused fun continues at stops in Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, and Cologne before the ship reaches its final stop. In Amsterdam, guests can take a canal cruise, visit a windmill, or taste local cheeses.
Courtesy of Scenic
This Australian-founded company established in 1986 offers river cruises, ocean voyages, and expeditions to the polar regions. Billed as an ultra-luxury, five-star cruise line, Scenic offers special Rhine River itineraries that feature Christmas markets or focus on topics like wine and food.
The Rhine Christmas Markets cruise begins in Amsterdam with options of a walking, biking, or canal tour before setting off for Cologne, where guests can see the magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, visit a brewery, and browse the Christmas markets. In Baden-Baden, a famed German spa town, browse the markets or soak in thermal waters. Koblenz, Mannheim, and Strasbourg are additional stops on this holiday-themed itinerary.
Courtesy of Emerald Cruises
Emerald, founded in 2013, specializes in luxury river and yacht cruises. Emerald's Rhine River cruises include an eight-day voyage and an 11-day cruise that includes the Moselle.
The Jewels of the Rhine cruise starts with two nights in Amsterdam, where guests can take a bicycle tour or canal cruise before the captain’s dinner. Then, it's off to Cologne and the charming cities of Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Freiburg, where castles, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings await. The ship arrives in Basel for the end of the cruise the next day.
Courtesy of CroisiEurope
Founded in 1976 in France, CroisiEurope is the largest European-based river cruise line. The company also offers sea voyages and canal barge cruises. Their budget-friendly river cruises include some shore excursions, and Rhine River cruises vary in length from three days to two weeks or longer.
The five-day Rhine in Flames cruise boards in Strasbourg for a night of cruising. The next day in Rüdesheim, excursion options include a train ride to a wine cellar followed by a visit to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments or a gondola lift to the Niederwalddenkmal and vineyard hike. The next day is the main event as the ship sails towards Trechtingshausen for the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks show. The ship arrives in Mannheim for an optional visit to Heidelberg and later a gala evening before sailing back towards Strasbourg.
Courtesy of A-ROSA Cruises
This German company has been cruising the Rhine River and its tributaries since 2009. The family-friendly line has a kids club and family suites with plenty of room to spread out. Their river cruises range from four to seven days, and there is a fee for most excursions.
The five-day Rhine Legends cruises the Middle Rhine round-trip from Cologne. In Rüdesheim, guests can tour the countryside on a bike or train tour. Stops in Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, and Koblenz provide more ways to explore the beautiful region, before the ship returns to Cologne for disembarkation.

While investigating river cruise options from Paris to Honfleur on the Seine, I noted that many of the lines tout overnights on the riverboat at the beginning or end of the cruise as a special feature of the cruise. In fact, Crystal offers two nights at the beginning of its 10-night Seine cruise and two nights at the end of the cruise in Paris, for a total of four nights out of ten.
At first blush, that arrangement seems quite good, particularly for passengers who have not spent a lot of time previously in the glorious City of Light. However, one might wish to take another gander at that prospect, whether in Paris or in other cities in Europe.
For example (and granted that Crystal is at the high end of the pricing scale - but the same principle should apply proportionately at most pricing levels), the per diem on the Crystal cruise ranges from $600 - 800 for a 250 sq.ft. cabin, thus resulting in a per diem per couple of $1,200 - 1,600. I would suggest that even in Paris, with its shocking prices, one could stay in lovely room in a 5-star hotel, eat marvelous meals superior to anything available on the river boat, and experience the city much more fully for a total expense equal to or likely lower than the per diem on the boat.
Hmm, maybe I have way too much time on my hands, leading me to make this dubious analysis. Nonetheless, it seems to me that even though one night on the boat at the beginning and/or end of a river cruise is probably okay (mainly from a standpoint of convenience), two nights or more is not a good use of one's travel funds.
Full disclosure here: we are booked on a Tauck Amsterdam-Budapest cruise in September with an overnight in each city at the beginning and end of the cruise; so I can't toss all overnights under the bus. ;)
Any thoughts on this matter of enormous world import??
Cheers, Fred

know what you are saying well. we would prefer to stay on the ship in comfort rather than be transferred to a lower standard hotel not of our choosing, which can happen.
we often have pre/post land arrangements and enjoy making selections in Paris or elsewhere in the location of our choice. totally agree about the financial analysis too. we have done 8 European river cruises and enjoy small ship cruising. we loved the Normandy area and would return anytime to see more.
It will depend on the city. In Amsterdam, the overnight is worthwhile because most river ships dock right near Centraal Station – we were able to walk around town after dinner. But in Paris the river boats dock past the Ile aux cygnes on the West end of the city [or worse -- the Viking longships dock out in the suburbs]. There are many desirable neighborhoods in Paris full of interesting hotels -- this isn't one.
Pully8 - Clearly, I was not clear in my example. Please forgive me for my inelegantly unclear choice of words. My intention was to suggest that one could get a much higher standard of hotel for the same $$$, not a lower one.
Host J - I entirely agree (as I must, since I am paying for the overnight on Tauck in Amsterdam in September and must rationalize it) that the first overnight in Amsterdam is quite handy. However, when one in dealing with overnights in Paris, as you correctly point out, things just ain't the same as in lots of other towns.
Therefore, dear kiddies, perhaps the moral of the story is that the wisdom of overnights depends mightily upon the city in which such overnights might occur, no?
While investigating river cruise options from Paris to Honfleur on the Seine, I noted that many of the lines tout overnights on the riverboat at the beginning or end of the cruise as a special feature of the cruise....
My first river cruise was with Uniworld in Russia in 1995; due to very limited Western quality hotels at that time, we did have included nights on the boat in both St, Petersburg and in Moscow. Since then we have done a number of river cruises, and unless there are exceptional circumstances I'd much rather select my own hotel pre and/or post cruise and have control of location and length of stay (and usually get what is IMO a much better value). Thom
I think OP was talking about overnights that are included in the price of the cruise, in which case he raises an interesting point and he would be correct if the river boat was being used strictly for sleeping and meals....but in my experience those nights in port usually include days of sightseeing and it is far more economical and efficient for the cruise line to have the bus(es) pick up everyone at the dock, while still allowing freedom to come and go at will while in the city after the tours are finished. This is especially true of Budapest and Cologne.
However, as you correctly point out, pre and/or post cruise stays can almost always be done for less and you get to decide where you'll be staying in terms of site-seeing. In St. Petersburg and Moscow, I would always recommend staying in a hotel because the dock is quite far from the city center and the traffic is horrid so much time is lost sitting on a bus.

I guess I was comparing (for example) a 7 night Seine river boat trip with 4 additional nights spent on the boat in Paris with included meals and tours versus a 7 night river boat trip with 4 nights in a Paris hotel of my choice paying for meals and touring costs. IMO you could probably do the nights in a Paris hotel with better location and a larger room, plus meals of comparable quality and private tours (versus bus tours) for no more and probably less money than on a river boat (it is more efficient and economical for the company to provide bus tours, but IMO their margin of profit probably puts the cost to you higher than a self arranged private tour). I recognize that it might be difficult to find identical quality on the two river boats, but you probably could come close whatever your price point. Staying 11 nights on the river boat wins in eliminating a transfer from boat to hotel, but I think that otherwise the hotel and private tours win by a large margin. Just my opinion (and I'll admit to a basis against being herded onto a bus of any size:rolleyes:).
Oh, I don't disgree Thom... If you're going on a 7 night Seine river cruise with 4 additional nights in Paris it's a 7 day river cruise...but if you take those 4 hotel nights and tack them onto the 7 day river cruise then it's an 11 day cruise, which is a much better deal for the cruise company!
We lived in London and while there we traveled both independently and with chartered tour groups. Sometimes it was nice not to have to stand in line to buy a ticket or have to find a place to park...and both of us got to look out the window and enjoy the scenery (not to mention how much we learned from the guide) as opposed to one driving the car and the other one getting yelled at! :D
I agree with your arithmetic freddie. And I agree that it depends on the city - St Petersburg and Moscow were particularly excellent examples of why a city hotel is much better than the riverboat where a lot of time can be wasted on a bus. But other places can be ideal.
On the other hand, what I would not like to do is change from the boat to a hotel for only one night. The hassle factor there would out weight any money savings potential. But for 2 nights or more, my vote is for the hotel and private tours, or DIY.
Well Fred, you probably know my views on this generally. I would rather choose my own hotel and my own pace of sightseeing, rather than tack on extra nights on the boat, or off the boat, where my sightseeing will be organized by somebody else and involve tour buses.
This is germaine to my own research, in the nearby "Normandy with Avalon, AMA or Tauck" thread. Tauck does 2 nights at the Pullman in Paris prior to boarding. I don't think there's a way to opt out of this. For us it would be a definite downside to choosing Tauck, since we'd rather pick our own style and neighbourhood in Paris. AMA does something similar but allows an opt-out. Not quite the same as being on the boat for extra nights, but similarly problematic.
I'm with you (in more ways than one) on the AMS-BUD itinerary--I would rather they not include the overnight in Amsterdam, since if I want an extra day to do the Rijksmuseum, etc., I'd rather do it myself. And we always fly in at least a day in advance, so some kind of transfer of accommodation is involved, always. But I will live with it. And since I'm new to Budapest, doing some kind of tour won't be a bad thing I suspect, especially if they take us on a night-time cruise up the river to see the sights after dark.
BTW, it's interesting that Crystal claims they will be sailing into Honfleur. Getting a permit to do so is quite difficult apparently. And getting there is like getting into Bordeaux--it depends on the tides.
Wendy I think everyone does the night-time cruise in Budapest. Make sure you're up on the sun deck when you do it, it's absolutely magnificent and you'll be able to get a wonderful picture of the Parliament building bathed in light. I've done 2 cruises out of Budapest and both of them did a "turn around" after dinner.
Our first river cruise we did the included pre and post hotels (with Avalon). Great hotels, but on our next 2 we booked apartments through VRBO and it was much better for us. We loved the apartments, kitchens, wifi, etc, and we saved a ton of money. We hired private guides and still saved a ton of money so we will always book apartments in the future for the comfort and convenience and economy!
We love VRBO too but have only used it in the U.S.
We did Vantage Russia and loved the five star centrally located hotels in Moscow and STP.
That was much better than having to commute in heavy traffic from the boat.

Amen to that....Russian traffic is more like Cairo and Istanbul than NYC or LA

For many travelers, cruises likely bring to mind Caribbean island hopping or journeys along European waterways .
But for those who would rather stick close to home, there are plenty of options for visiting new destinations by ship without ever leaving the U.S. Domestic river cruises give travelers an opportunity to explore America without the hassle of long-haul flights.
“You cover multiple states on almost every cruise … so it's a really nice way to see different parts of the country,” said Donavan Martin, vice president of the travel agency USA River Cruises Inc.
Offering a convenient way to explore the rich landscapes and cultural heritage of America, these cruises eliminate the complexities of international travel. For passengers accustomed to a more conventional type of sailing, they can reshape perceptions of cruising and open up a world of exploration along America's iconic rivers.
Travelers can choose from a range of itineraries from coast to coast. This year’s most popular sailings have been on the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest – which are often combined with the Snake River – according to Martin.
The Mississippi River is another major destination. Viking even purpose-built its first river ship based in North America, Viking Mississippi , for the waterway.
“On the Viking Mississippi, our onboard dining features daily-changing menus highlighting delicious regional cuisine and always available classics prepared with fresh, local ingredients,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “Our cultural enrichment on board includes iconic music of the region, such as New Orleans Jazz and the Wisconsin Polka, while our guest lecturers shed light on the region’s art, architecture, history, culture and more."
But passengers should note that the river can be tricky to navigate. Water level fluctuations, which have been exacerbated by climate change , can affect cruise lines’ operations.
“Almost every year, there's at least a couple of weeks there that could have some alterations to itineraries for water levels,” Martin said. He added that cruise lines do a “really good job” of trying to visit as many planned ports as possible.
Travelers have options in regions they may not even realize.
American Cruise Lines, which offers a wide range of itineraries across the country, began round-trip sailings from Washington, D.C. , in March. In Florida, a major departure point for ocean-going cruise ships, its Great Rivers of Florida itinerary allows guests to sail in and around the state rather than just from it.
American operates a U.S.-flagged fleet of modern riverboats, paddle wheelers and coastal ships and has grown rapidly, nearly tripling its vessels in just the last five years. The line, which currently has 19 ships, will add five more by 2026.
The expansion has been driven in large part by demand from loyal guests, according to spokesperson Alexa Paolella. “The advantages in exploring the U.S. are endless,” she said in an email. “We all have a tendency to overlook or take for granted what we have available in our own backyards.”
New England cruises visiting states like Rhode Island and Massachusetts are reliable traffic drivers as well, according to Martin.
“Those ones and the Hudson River are always sold out,” he said.
Most of the U.S. river cruise destinations are seasonal, he added. Prime time for the Columbia River is between April and October, for instance, and travelers may find fewer ships on the Lower Mississippi in late summer during hurricane season .
Prices vary by destination, sailing date and other factors.
Starting prices for eight-day Mississippi Delta Explorer cruises with Viking between New Orleans and Memphis, Tennessee, in 2025, for example, are $3,499 to $5,999 per person.
Martin noted that U.S. river cruises tend to be more inclusive than traditional ocean sailings. Many bundle meals and drinks – including alcohol and specialty coffee – along with shore excursions and Wi-Fi, which can add up when priced out a la carte.
That depends. River cruises have also historically been popular with an older clientele. Viking, for instance, is adults-only.
Even when children are welcome, river cruise vessels tend to be small, without the kinds of kid-friendly attractions found on large ocean ships (think rock climbing walls and roller coasters ). Martin said ships on most of the lines his agency works with can accommodate 200 guests or less.
That said, Martin has booked families on American Cruise Lines who enjoyed themselves. Adventure-focused Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic also attracts an active crowd, according to Martin.
Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships
U.S. travelers generally don’t need to bring one on domestic river cruises, but they should have another form of ID like a driver’s license, Martin said. “For some reason, maybe someone doesn’t have a passport, so these cruises are perfect for that.”
