Are these the 8 most beautiful classic sailing yachts of all time?

Moonbeam of fife iii, 1903.

The 30 metre, gaff cutter Moonbeam of Fife III epitomises beautiful classic yachts at their finest. Launched in 1903, Moonbeam of Fife is still going strong on the classic yacht regatta circuit despite being more than a hundred years old. The William Fife-designed yacht is constructed in wood with an oak hull and superstructure, while her interior joinery is well-kept mahogany. The historical yacht Moonbeam of Fife III is currently for sale .

Tuiga, 1909

Built by the renowned William Fife shipyard in Fairlie on the Clyde estuary in Scotland, Tuiga was commissioned by the Duke of Medinaceli, a close friend of the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, and has had 10 owners in 106 years. HSH Prince Albert II decided to buy her in 1995.  Tuiga  has been participating in classic yacht regattas ever since and is now the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, crewed by YCM members.

Mariette, 1915

The classic 42 metre twin-masted schooner _ Mariette of 1915  _was built by Herreshoff in the United States 100 years ago. Age has not withered her, but  Mariette of 1915  has undergone a few refits in the Pendennis yard at Falmouth in recent years: in 2010 and again in 2012 in preparation for the Pendennis Cup, in which she took first prize in the St Petroc Traditional Class as well as being crowned overall winner. In 2014 she returned to Falmouth once more for minor works.

Creole, 1927

Now owned by the Gucci family, this beautiful wooden schooner has had a colourful history. Commissioned by wealthy American Alan Cochran and launched in 1927,  Creole  has had a number of different owners and also been called Vira. When she was known as  Magic Circle , she was transformed into a minesweeper during the Second World War, having previously competed in a number of regattas and attended previous America’s Cup events. In the 1970s she was used by the Danish government for sailing training in the rehabilitation of drug addicts before being bought by the Gucci family in 1983.

Endeavour, 1934

Arguably the world’s most famous J Class,  Endeavour  was the British challenger in the 1934 America’s Cup , but was beaten by the Harold Vanderbilt-owned Rainbow . Endeavour was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, who was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour ’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen around the world, winning many races in her first season. Though she did not win the America's Cup she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Since 1934, she has often led a perilous existence, even being sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In 1984, American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought Endeavour and she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman. Endeavour sailed again on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years. J Class yacht  Endeavour  is now for sale .

Elena, 1910

In 1910, Morton Plant commissioned 55 metre  Elena to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the so-called “Wizard of Bristol”, who made his name designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant's brief was to the point: he wanted a schooner “that can win”.

Herreshoff gave Elena a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability. Elena won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet and in 1928 came her crowning glory, victory in the Transatlantic Race. In 2009, she was rebuilt using the original plans for the first Elena.

Black Swan, 1899

Originally designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England, Black Swan started life as Brynhild with a yawl rig. She won a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King’s Cup. Over the years, she has undergone several changes and different rig configurations, and at one stage she was renamed Changrilla . She was rechristened Black Swan in the 1960s and, today, after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy, she is now carrying a gaff-rig, designed by the Faggioni Yacht Design Studio and built by Harry Spencer.

Mariquita, 1911

Another beautiful classic yacht from Fife, Mariquita was launched in 1911. The 38.16 metre sailing yacht was designed and built for the industrialist Arthur Stothert. As part of the 19 metre Big Class racing that re-emerged in 1911, this gaff-rigged cutter is said to have inspired the J Class yachts that came after her.

She raced competitively against her brethren from 1911-1913, but by the 1950s, Mariquita was the last in the 19 metre class remaining. She was restored in 1991 and received a further refit in 2004. A star on the classic yacht racing scene, Mariquita is now for sale .

ClassicSailboats.Org

ClassicSailboats.Org (CSO) is a not-for-profit maritime publication and the world’s largest alliance of guardians, and preservationist. We are dedicated to preserving the spirit and historical record of vintage & classic sailing vessels. While remaining committed to protecting historical maritime properties, our precious oceans, waterways & wildlife.

As educators it is important to extend our reach to the communities, organizations and schools that would otherwise be unable to access our message because of geographical, and sociological limitations. The application of STEM through our initiatives 10 Class, Bluestar, Greenstar, and Sailing for Water is our educational mission. Whether following the progress of expeditions to the Pacific to study plastic pollution, or to the Arctic to study the effects of the loss of salinity from our oceans. It is our pledge “To empower people of all ages to make smart decisions today that will affect the quality of life for future generations to come.”

As preservationist and historians each classic vessel has a unique story to tell. The Classic Yacht Register of Heritage, on the CSO website, has become a go-to reference for historians, former guardians, their families, and the general public. An important part of CSO’s mission is to promote the rich history and intriguing human interest stories associated with these classics, preserving and adding to their cultural significance for future generations to come.

The topics and stories that are focused on our publication are made possible through the hard work and achievements of our alliance, and through the associated supporting cast of the collective initiatives. We look forward to expanding the reach of our cultures and remain dedicated to our collective efforts. The stories, and racing histories of these magnificent craft are important to the overall valuation of each yachts role in history. We encourage our readers to contribute with historical contributions (comments) when possible.

Team Ten Class – Our collective mission is to bring awareness to the overuse of plastics that are effecting the overall health of our oceans, the blue heart of our planet. To bring a call to action to the communities we serve, through Science, Technology, Education and Math; to create a venue for recognizing the efforts in “Keeping the Legends Alive,” through periodical “Lifetime Achievement Awards.” Our race team is historical in design, spartan in concept, and void of modern day conveniences…pure vintage racing machines.

Advisory Board – The purpose of our Advisory Board is to gain outside expert and independent advise on the role and message that ClassicSailboats.Org will pursue for the communities we serve, and for stewardship for the environmental and philanthropic causes that are collectively important to us.

Sustainability and the Capacity to Endure – To continue to exist in the same state or condition has been a real challenge for all custodians and stewards of Vintage, Classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts and that of our Team boats. Preserving the ecosystems and environments that we sail in are equally as important, in our quest for sustainability. In our organizational capacity we will provide a means in achieving low environmental impact by exemplifying the importance of using renewable and biodegradable resources when possible.

Hello, My father, Graham Newland was involved in the building of many classic yachts in Sydney, Australia. I have just published his memoirs. Is this something you can promote on your website? I can send you a precis if you wish. kind regards, Jan

I would love to know more about the P class I think a number of them have been rebuilt. Are they being found in the US or Europe?

' src=

Hello, I’m currently working on a documentary about the Don Lee Broadcasting Company and what an important and innovative part it played in early west coast television history. The empire was run by Don Lee (until his death in 1934) and then his son Tommy (from 1934 to his death in 1950) both of whom were avid yachtsmen. I’ve notice some great, detailed information here on your website about the famous boats these two men owned and raced. I’m hoping to find a boating authority of whom I could do an interview (on video if the person is local to Los Angeles…otherwise probably just audio) about this particular subject. Please let me know if you are (or know) such a person. Thank you very much!

40 Best Sailboats

the 40 best sailboats

Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.

Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”

By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.

If you enjoy scrolling through this list, which includes all types of sailboats, then perhaps you would also be interested in browsing our list of the Best Cruising Sailboats . Check it out and, of course, feel free to add your favorite boat, too. Here at Cruising World , we like nothing better than talking about boats, and it turns out, so do you.

Used sails for sale on sailtrader.

Finding and buying a high-quality and affordable used sail is hard. With SailTrader it doesn’t have to be. SailTrader allows you to find used sails from top brands, used racing and cruising sails, and allows you to find sails for your sailboat based on your sail dimensions.

Used Sails From Top Brands

SailTrader is able to help you find used sails from top brands such as North Sails , Quantum Sails , UK Sailmakers , Doyle Sails , Evolution Sails, Precision Sails, Hood Sails and more. Thanks to our marketplace design, and the ability for anyone to sell their used sail, there is a lot of competition for used sails. This makes it easy for buyers to find a sail at a competitive price they can afford.

Shop Racing or Cruising Sails

Sailing is a very specific and unique sport/hobby. This can make it difficult to find used racing and cruising sails at an affordable price. Most people who are selling their used sails have difficulty finding their target customer, and people who are shopping for sails have a difficult time finding someone selling exactly what they need. SailTrader is here to alleviate this problem. Our site is specifically designed to make buying and selling sales quicker and easier. Now, sellers can find their target client, and buyers can search for precisely what they need and find it!

Anyone in the sailing community can create an account, meaning our inventory of used racing and cruising sails is constantly changing. And thanks to the design of our marketplace your search is not limited to your immediate area, meaning you can find a used racing or cruising sail from anywhere! Whether you are looking for a used racing sail, or for a used cruising sail, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for on SailTrader.

Find Sails Based on Dimensions

There are so many different types of sails that searching for a new one can be an overwhelming process. Now, it doesn’t have to be. Simply measure your old sail, type in the sail dimensions, and find a list of used sails that match those dimensions.

Sail dimensions are specific for every boat and each of them have maximum sail dimensions that cannot be exceeded. In order to properly measure your dimensions you will need to establish the P, E, J, and I of your boat.

A few terms to help you measure the sails are the luff, the leach/leech, and the foot. The luff is the sail’s forward edge. It is the side attached to the mast. The leach/leech is the back edge of a sail, the one not attached to the mast. And the foot is the bottom edge of a sail.

In addition, it is also helpful to know the location of the head, the tack, and the clew. The head is the top left corner of the sail which attaches to the top of the mast. The tack is the bottom left corner of the sail. And finally the clew, is the bottom right corner of the sail.

If you are looking for a mainsail for sale , you will need to know the P and E dimensions. The “P” measurement (also known as the Luff) is the distance from highest point that the mainsail can be hoisted to the top surface of the boom. The “E” measurement (also known as the foot) is the distance along the boom from the mast to the point on the boom to which the mainsail can be pulled. Occasionally you may also want to measure the Leach/Leech of the mainsail. This is the point from the highest point that the mainsail can be hoisted on the mast, to the furthest point on the boom that the mainsail can be pulled to. Make sure you note the minimum and maximum measurements your boat will allow.

If you are looking for a headsail you will need to know the I and the J measurements. The “I” is the distance down the front of the mast from the halyard to the level of the main deck (the luff), and “J” is the distance along the deck from the tack to the front of the mast.

A jib is a triangular staysail set in front of the mast. With a jib headsail, the J measurement is typically 80-90% of the I measurement. This is because the foot usually overlaps the mainsail a bit.

A genoa is a large jib that overlaps the mainsail. Genoas are categorized based on the amount they extend past the mainsail. For instance a 135% genoa has a foot 35% longer than ‘J’ and a 155% genoa has a foot 55% longer.

Finally, we have measurements for spinnakers . You will need to know the I and the J for these sails. “I” is the distance from the highest part of the spinnaker to the deck, and “J” is the length of the spinnaker pole.

Family who lost 15-year-old in St. Pete boat crash files lawsuit

sailboat old

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The family of a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a St. Pete boat crash in March has filed a lawsuit.

According to court documents, Breck Moorefield, the mother of Collin Moorefield, is suing Anjan and Katherine Tharakan. Anjan and Katherine are the parents of Christian, who is also 15 and was operating the boat when Collin died.

The lawsuit alleges that Anjan and Katherine bought the 18-foot Key West 188 BR watercraft for their son to take friends out on the boat alone without "adequate experience, adult supervision, and/or a lookout."

On March 3, the FWC said Collin and Christian were on the boat when it hit a dock, throwing them both from the boat. Both were taken to local hospitals after being found.

Officials said Collin passed away from his injuries, while Christian sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Court documents state that Anjan and Katherine have "engaged in a pattern" of buying Christian vehicles or vessels for their son to operate and transport other children on without adult supervision, including a golf cart for street use.

At a family get-together, Christian invited Collin out on the boat, which Anjan and Katherine allowed without ensuring that they did not take any alcohol with them or providing proper supervision, according to court documents.

The documents state that Christian then drove the boat at or near its top speed under the influence of alcohol and struck the dock. He also allegedly admitted to those helping him out of the water that he had been looking at his phone to change the music during the time of the collision.

Collin suffered massive blunt-force trauma.

Breck is seeking $50,000 in damages, excluding interest and attorneys' fees.

This 103-year-old ship is being used to give new sailors their sea legs

Nathan Coleman

The HMCS Oriole never saw any combat in its 103 years, and it's still used to this day to train new sailors in the Royal Canadian Navy.

It’s the oldest commissioned ship in the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Weather Network was invited aboard for a tour while it dropped anchor in Chester, Nova Scotia.

“Every line that you see is operated manually by hand,” HMCS Oriole Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Greg Morris tells The Weather Network as it dropped anchor in Chester, Nova Scotia, for race week regatta festivities.

Now a public relations vessel, the HMCS Oriole was purchased by the Royal Canadian Navy in the 1950s for one dollar from Toronto's Gooderham family, who built it in 1921 and used it mainly as a racing boat on the Great Lakes.

It’s never been used in combat, but Morris says it’s a great way for sailors to get nautical training.

There’s always a three-person watch when the ship is sailing to avoid collisions, with a lookout at the head of the ship, a helmsperson, and an office of the watch.

“With a 103-year-old vessel, everything is done manually. We don’t have any hydraulics or even winches on board, so every block, every line that you see is operated manually by hand,” says Morris.

He says many hands make light work as crew members learn nautical skills, how to work with others in close quarters, and leadership.

21 crew members fit on board. There’s a rotating crew of trainees every two weeks, and every sailor is a member of the Royal Canadian Navy.

“When I’m on a frigate, the engines go—the engineers take care of all that. Here, we’ve got to raise the sails, and you know that’s just a whole new level of skill to learn how to use the wind and the weather to propel us wherever we need to go,” says crew member Sailor Second Class Samuel Wareing.

The ship sailed from Victoria to Halifax in 2018 through the Panama Canal and is now based out of Nova Scotia.

“It’s very heavy, a very seaworthy vessel, so as a commanding officer, I treat it like a museum, but it is a very seaworthy vessel, and it can take some very heavy weather,” says Morris.

Three people injured as two boats collide on Pewaukee Lake

Portrait of Cathy Kozlowicz

Three people were injured after two boats collided on Pewaukee Lake on Saturday morning.

At 10:15 a.m., the Pewaukee Lake Patrol investigated a crash involving two boats near Peterson Drive in the city of Pewaukee on the east side of the lake.

According to a news release from the village of Pewaukee Police Department, the sides of the boats hit each other as they tried to veer away from each other.

A 26-year-old man who was driving one of the boats and was the only person in that boat was treated at the scene, according to police. A 61-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman from the other boat were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

None of them was ejected from their boats, and alcohol is not thought to have been a factor, according to police. No citations have been issued; the incident is under investigation, according to village Police Chief Tim Heier.

Final Body Is Recovered From Yacht That Sank Off Sicily

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday.

Rescue workers in orange wet suits on the deck of a boat with a green body bag.

By Emma Bubola and Elisabetta Povoledo

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing.

On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived.

Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case.

There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday.

Fifteen survived.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored.

But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies.

The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore.

Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht.

In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.”

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added.

As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access.

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them.

In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck.

Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat.

Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday.

The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain.

One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly.

The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers.

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed.

But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label.

Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out.

The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said.
