sunfish sailboat lessons

Welcome to the Sunfish Class Website!

Sunfish are incredibly popular single-handed sailboats. Raced and cruised in over 20 countries, this flexible, tunable rig makes it suited to a diverse range of sailors.Few classes have women, youth and masters regularly finishing in the top 10 (or winning!) national and World Championships.  Since the boat has changed little over the years, you don’t need a brand-new Sunfish to start racing. While new boats are reasonably priced, used boats are plentiful, and with perhaps a new sail you are ready to join the fun!

Welcome to Bimini Bay Sailing Lessons

Small sailboat sailing school.

I sold my last sailboat in July, 2023. I will still give occasional lessons for individuals who own their own small powerboat or sailboat.

Have a new Keelboat or Powerboat? I give small keelboat and small motorboat lessons on your boat, covering such topics as docking, backing up, pivot turns, and more as I share local knowledge of our waterways...

Bimini Bay is a beautiful, sheltered body of water nestled inside Anna Maria Island. It is the perfect, safe place to learn to sail -- and we often see dolphins! Bimini Bay Sailing is just minutes from Holmes Beach, Longboat Key, and Bradenton, snuggled between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. During the last part of your saling lesson we usually sail just off the shore of Anna Maria Island into Tampa Bay, with a clear view of the Sunshine Skyway, Egmont Key and the Anna Maria Pier.

Take Sailing Lessons on the very stable WindRider 17 Trimaran, with a quiet electric motor for uncertain breezes. Or at your location on your own small dinghy sailboat or keelboat. I also offer powerboat docking lessons on your own boat.

Learn how to use a mainsheet, jib sheets, and a furling line. learn how to tack, jibe, and how to rig a sailboat. learn your basic points of sail. students usually sail at least half of the time on their own..

If you already know how to sail and you want to rent a Trimaran, for your safety and pleasure, I will still do a skills and safety review. Then I'll go out with you as your coach/guide, on the same sailboat, but you will do almost all of the sailing. This is to make your experience as safe and pleasant as possible.

Captain Floyd Jay Winters , an instructor for Bimini Bay Sailing since 2012, has taken over the helm of the Anna Maria Island small sailing school. (He is fully vaccinated.) To schedule a sailing lesson, you can reach Coach Jay Winters at 941.730.2719 or click on the [ Contact ] link.

I encourage a follow up session to refine your skills and have to opportunity to get more sailing time on your own. Parents or spouses are welcome to watch the sailing class and take photos of their kids or spouse as they learn to sail. Click the [ Lessons ] link for more information on what is covered.

Click the [ Photos ] link to see beautiful photos of Sunfish at Bimini Bay Sailing School.

A Father and Son Tacking a Sunfish (29 seconds)

For the past 11 years, Bimini Bay Sailing has offered a sailing summer camp through the Anna Maria Island Community Center. And once again this past June 2022, fourteen young sailors had the opportunity to safely experience the excitement of their first exposure to sailing during our mini sailing camps at Bimini Bay.

Receive sailing lessons at our small sailing school or just refresh your sailing skills in beautiful Bimini Bay. The magical waters around Anna Maria Island are warm, clear, and uncrowded.

sunfish sailboat lessons

The North Shore Yacht Club offers a seven-week Adult Learn-to-Sail Program for beginners and returning students using single-handed dinghies. Classes begin in early June with a maximum class size of 12 students per class. Classes meet 9 until noon either Saturday or Sunday mornings, depending upon enrollment and class preference, with no classes held on the July 4th weekend. Students learn the fundamentals of rigging and sailing using club-owned Sunfish sailboats in classes led by US Sailing certified instructors and experienced NSYC volunteers. This course is intended for adults. Participation of high school age students is at the discretion of the instructor. Any minor student must have an adult from the same household participating.

The first day of class is held at a local swimming pool where students are asked to demonstrate the ability to successfully tread water for two minutes and swim the full length of the pool. We also cover basic safety skills in the pool including righting a capsized sailboat. All other classes are held at the Park Ave Boating Facility in Highland Park and on Lake Michigan waters.

Once students have obtained basic skills in Sunfish boat handling, they are encouraged to make use of the club boats and are welcome to sail with other experienced sailors throughout the summer season. There will be a skills assessment towards the end of the program to confirm students have reached satisfactory standards to use club boats, or need further instructor-led supervision. We practice the safe boating "buddy system" where no one sails alone and a secured, US Coast Guard approved Life Jacket / Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is required to be worn on the water at all times.

Students must join NSYC with a Full Membership, and then register for the NSYC Adult Learn-to-Sail Program. All Membership and Adult Learn-to-Sail class registration information can be found on our Membership tab, along with important General Club Guidelines. .

The Sunfish combines easy rigging and manageability for a comfortable and hassle-free sailing experience. This is the sailboat loved by all. Designed in 1952 as the ultimate beach craft, the Sunfish sailboat is still a favourite with all ages. This maintenance free boat holds its resale value thanks to its robust construction, highlighted by hard chines and a flat underbody. The Sunfish can be stored almost anywhere and is a snap to car-top, making it a popular international class and easy to transport to your favourite beach for family fun.

sunfish sailboat lessons

The Sunfish has its roots planted firmly in 1947 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Friends Alexander “Al” Bryan and Cortlandt “Cort” Heyniger (the Al and Cort in Alcort) pondered, “How to put a sail on a surfboard?” The answer involved a rejected design for American Red Cross waterfront rescue surfboards, leading to the Sailfish – a lateen rigged, flat-decked, plywood marvel. In 1951, Bryan’s pregnant wife found its flat deck somewhat uncomfortable. The addition of a cockpit and widening of the hull created the Sunfish. The logo was created by Heyniger, who traced a nickel and added fins, the tail and an eye. Early wood Sailfish and Sunfish were available assembled or as kits. In 1959 the introduction of fiberglass and the low cost and ease of production led to the proliferation of Sunfish everywhere. Other improvements included aluminium spars replacing spruce, Dacron sails replacing cotton, ash replacing mahogany for tillers, resulting in increased speed, performance and reliability. Sunfish racing started almost as quickly as two or three boats came together – the first North American Championship was 1963, the first Midwinters was 1965.

sunfish sailboat lessons

The new Topcat K2X is our fastest catamaran and the most exciting sail for advanced sailors. The German built K2X has a similar rig to the Getaway with wings and a boom-less main and the addition of light and sleek hulls, and extra sail area. Recent sailing experience required. Main and jib. Crews 2-4.

First hr $105
Additional hr $75

The Getaway is best for experienced sailors who want an exciting sail. It’s super fun to sit out on the wings, but that does make it a more acrobatic sail, as you have to crawl across the trampoline, under the sail and up onto the opposite wing when coming about. Up to three people can take this for a lesson.

The Flying Scot has remained basically unchanged since it was first built in 1957. With bench seating built into the deck, it’s a little more comfortable and a less acrobatic sail than the Getaway. Even if you have limited experience, when the conditions are light the Wave is your best option. Up to five can take this for a lesson.

In higher winds, the Wave is an energetic sail for experienced sailors and a blast to fly a hull.

We don’t have strict boundaries, but rather some geographical and common sense limitations based on the conditions. We always sail within line of site due to the rapidly changing weather, and so that we can see and assist you if you have an issue.

We ask that you stay up wind and south of the islands to the North to avoid the shallow water. We recommend that you avoid sailing in the WaveRunner Area for an extended period of time.

No Sunfish, but you’ll like the Hobie Wave even better! It has a single sail and no clunky low boom to smack your head on.

Yes! You may use your own life vest as long as it is Coast Guard approved. Please see our staff in the office for life vest approval before heading out on the water.

We do require you to have some prior sailing experience in order to take out a boat on your own. If you don’t, then consider taking a sailing lesson with one of our awesome instructors.

This is different for everyone, but if you define “learning to sail” as acting as skipper of your own small boat, we recommend at least three two hour lessons. If you have not sailed before, we strongly recommend making your first lesson two hours instead of one. We will offer a discounted rate for multiple days of instruction.

15-20% is customary and much appreciated.

Up to around 15 MPH we are good to go! When the wind starts to gust higher than 15 MPH we restrict sailing to those with recent (within the past year) experience. Do not hesitate to give us a call to check on wind conditions in our area.

We cannot operate when the wind is sustained over 20.

We have strict weather parameters to ensure that we can rent safely. While certain conditions may be feasible for an experienced individual on their own vessel, we have to be more proactive when it comes to limiting our rental activity. We cease rentals when the wind is sustained over 20mph and we do not rent with storm cells in the area or a high likelihood of inclement weather. Other conditions such as wind direction and wave height may also play into our decision.

Absolutely, just remember that there is often a chance of capsize. In some conditions (and based on your experience) it may be important that your child is comfortable in the water and will not panic.

We want to make sure we’re setting your kids up for sailing success and those early sailing memories are important! We’ll be honest with you if we don’t think it will be a good idea.

The Getaway does not sail well without the jib. There are other ways to spill wind and depower using the traveler, but if you’re not comfortable sailing with a jib, you’re not going to be able to effectively sail the Getaway.

Strictly speaking, no they’re not. We are more than happy to facilitate in whatever way we can as long as we deem it safe to do so. Feel free to discuss specifics with a manager.

Typically we discourage it and recommend a Wave, but if someone has considerable experience and the wind is on the lighter side (sustained at 13mph or less) we can allow it.

While we don’t have trapeze rigs and harnesses available for our catamarans, our Getaways all have wings. Wings are outrigger seats that make it fun and easy to get out over the water.

Ocean Air Sports in Avon.

We recommend Corolla Kiteboarding and Outer Banks Kiting in Rodanthe.

Go to the “Calendar”, click on the “Details” button for your class and scroll to “About the Event” to see the decision before you drive to the lake.   Each class has 5 scheduled sessions, but there is enough time to complete the class in only 4 sessions if needed. If we need to cancel more than one session due to weather, we will try to schedule a make-up date when the boats and instructors are available.  Wear clothes and close-toed shoes that can get wet, bring a towel. Leave cameras and cell phones in the car. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. All sailors must wear life jackets while in class – we have plenty of jackets in different sizes for you to borrow. Bring lunch!

Pathway To Community Sailing Prgram (CSP)

The community sailing program allows club members to sail club-owned sailboats on their own. in order to join csp you must “qualify” on either the sunfish or flying scot sailboat by going on a ‘check ride’ with one of our instructors where you can demonstrate that you can rig, launch, sail, dock and de-rig the boat correctly and safely. if you take a learn-to-sail class and go on to qualify for csp, there is no additional cost for you to enjoy all the csp benefits for the remainder of that season. once qualified for csp, you may re-join as a csp member the following year to continue enjoying sailing club-owned boats. many students are comfortable sailors after their first 5 day series of classes and are ready to try joining our community sailing program (csp).   some students go on from msc 101 sunfish, to msc 201 flying scot or msc 401 catamaran.

before they join CSP.  If you wish to repeat a class, contact the Director of Education  [email protected] .

There are specific dates and times to sign up below for CSP Qualifying Days. The qualifying days are open to students who have completed our learn-to-sail class and to club members who can demonstrate their skills to sail our Sunfish, Flying Scots or Hobie 16 Catamarans in our CSP program.

HSA Sailing School

In the early days, experienced sailors volunteered their time to teach kids and non sailors how to sail.  Many of the best sailors in the Halifax area learned to sail as kids in home built plywood Optimist Prams.  As the club grew, more volunteers developed a formal training program.  Several years ago the Halifax Youth Sailing affiliate organization was formed to better serve our young sailors.  Today HYS conducts summer sailing camps and a year round Sailing Team.

Each summer HSA offers Adult "Learn To Sail" Sunfish courses and Adult Intermediate Capri courses.

The spirit of volunteerism is still present in the HSA Sailing School. However, the HSA Sailing School and all the volunteer instructors are fully certified by the United States Sailing Association , the governing body for the sport of sailing in the United States.

  2. 2019 Sunfish vs older ones?

The 2019 hull improvements are quite new and I believe my 2018 boat from China hull still has the foam. The photo I attached is of my 1977 Alcort Sunfish (red and white sail-the red, white and blue sail is of my new boat) and it is riding high in the water so I am assuming it is pretty dry in the hull although I didn't weigh the boat.
