In addition to current barometric pressure and temperature, the Yachtsman gives pressure-related data for the past 4 days: the first 6 hours at 1-hour intervals and after that at 6-hour intervals.

The resolution of the barometer is 1 mbar/0.05 inHg. When the reference altitude is correctly set, the instrument also shows the present sea-level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.

The best sailing watches can offer a multitude of functions, from MOB alerts to tidal calculations and large faced race count down timers. And yet still there’s utter simplicity of a waterproof self winding timepiece.

Just as tablets and even smartphones have revolutionised how sailors use multifunction displays and instruments, so the latest smart watch technology has now firmly filtered into sailing. While we’re now familiar with using our watches to give us directions, make calls and send messages, and act as a repeater screen on our wrists ashore, so the latest sailing watches also make navigation, data and comms technology wearable afloat.

However, the cleverest watch is not always the best watch for sailing. For racing an extremely simple and speedy to operate model may suit better. Price is not always an indicator of functionality either; even some of the least expensive sailing watches, like the Casio we showcase below, can be packed with features.

At the other end of the scale,  luxury horology brands – including Rolex, Panerai, and Omega among others – have long been closely associated with sailing, seeing it as the perfect sport to demonstrate their style, waterproof and ruggedised qualities, and accuracy.

In making our selection of the best sailing watches, we’ve chosen those with features specifically suitable for wearing aboard. Garmin’s latest sailing smartwatch includes improvements to strengthen integration with onboard electronics.

It’s a touchscreen model that can, for instance, be used to control MFD displays or Fusion audio systems, as well as Garmin autopilots.

You can also pay for things with contactless payments, but you’ll need to use an intermediary app, such as Curve if you are in the UK as British banks haven’t signed up for that function directly yet.

So let’s address the major change for the Quatix 7 over the Quatix 6, and that’s the display. Plenty of folks complained about the darkness or difficulty seeing the Quatix 6 screen, so they’ve addressed that with a much brighter lit up style of screen.  It is very bright even when turned to its dimmest setting. To save the battery from being drained unnecessarily at night, there’s a night time version of the watch screen where you can view it as a digital numeric mono display, on demand, otherwise the screen is completely blank. This brighter clearer display does come at a compromise of battery life or screen saver settings.

The extra screen size in the same outer bezel size though is really very nice. Maps and other tracking options can be easily seen.

High end Sapphire models add a new ultra-clear AMOLED touchscreen.

The watch can output directly to Strava and myfitnesspal along with other apps according to your preference. We like this watch very much indeed and it is currently the best smart sailing watch for all round functionality. Pricey though, but worth it.

The Instinct 2, launched in February 2022 is Garmin’s all-round watch, which they call their outdoors watch. Features that are particularly relevant to sailors include GPS positioning on charts; barometric pressure and a compass.

It has smartphone connectivity, receives emails and texts, and can control music via a phone. This watch also has an inbuilt thermometer and heart rate monitor.

The Garmin Instinct is available in no fewer than 20 different styles and colours. It’s actual diameter is 47mm (1 13/16” in) but the viewable face is 32mm (1 1/4”). The Instinct is 16mm (5/8” in) thick and weighs 53g (2 oz).

The Garmin Instinct watch is a good alternative for anyone seeking a more moderately priced alternative to the Quatix 6.

This watch I tested comprehensively for several weeks/months – it is a very smart design, with functions for every type of pastime on the water and off it.

Garmin is well known for superior boating instruments and they have now managed to squeeze all the data of a ten-inch chartplotter into a 1.3” inch round sailing watch. Bluetooth functionality means you can connect it to a Garmin chartplotter using the free Garmin Connect app, and to other makes of plotter using the Garmin transceiver (a $150 extra).

This allows all the features of a chartplotter to be displayed on the watch, including charts and even autopilot control to allow you to change heading or follow a GPS route – provided it is also connected through the chartplotter.

The Quatix 6 also offers more typical smartwatch functions including the ability to receive email and texts, can be used to control music on board, and monitors the user’s heart-rate.

It’s simple to switch between ‘boat display’ and ‘stylish watch’ modes, as hundreds of different watch faces that can be downloaded to customise it to the wearer’s preference, including an antique style face and even a copy of Big Ben. The Quatix 6 can also be switched between analogue and digital.

It’s overall diameter is 51mm (2” in) with a 36mm (1 5/8” in) viewable face, and it is 17mm (11/16”) thick. The Quatix 6’s weight is 83g (3oz) with the plastic strap or 156g (5.5oz) with the stainless band, which is quite a bit heavier than a conventional watch.

But the moment I removed it from the box it started to self wind. With just a small amount of movement, the second hand was moving.

For sailors who want to a sleek non electric time piece and for those divers who like to go under the water as well as on it.

I love this safety yellow colourway as it really stands out and is easy to read. This might not be to everyone’s taste though which is fine because the Spinnaker Hass comes in 9 different colourways.

FAQ: What makes the best sailing watch?

The ability to read the time, countdown or data in a hurry or at an angle is key, so look out for digital readouts with large numbers – some sailing watches have the ability to switch from digital to analogue readouts – and screens that can be viewed in different qualities of daylight. Backlit functions are essential for anyone heading offshore, whether racing or cruising.

A well-fitting wristband or strap with a secure clasp is vital to keep the watch on your arm. Most sailing watches have soft rubber or synthetic wristbands, which are more durable in a marine environment, and safer than steel. Rubber straps are also lighter and easier to adjust.

If you plan to use your watch for race start timing, look for programmable start sequence options, a sync button, countdowns that switch to seconds in the final stages. A loud, clear alarm or ‘beep’ function that tells you time to the gun is particularly useful, so you can keep watching your course, trim and other boats around you during the final approach to the line rather than having to glance at your wrist.

Suunto Yachtsman with X-Lander Military type buttons?

I Love Suunto watches. I've owned a silver alloy and black kevlar, bluey-green positive display 'Yachtsman' pretty much since they first went on sale. The watch has served me well, and although it's true to say I mainly enjoy 'fair weather' sailing (Caribbean, Croatia, Turkey) over the years I've put the watch through some reasonably challenging conditions. I also ski and snowboard several weeks a year (Canada, USA and Europe) always - I wear my Yachtsman. It has never let me down in any way. True, the battery does need replacing about once a year to eighteen months and yes I'm about ready for my fourth strap (it came with the leather strap and I've already replaced it twice with the synthetic neoprene type) But the watch keeps perfect time, and has never faltered in any way including display quality. Although I've looked after my Suunto Yachtsman, wearing it on sailing yachts and while skiing etc. one has to accept (over the years) it's going to pick up some scratches and although it's working perfectly - sadly it now has a number of marks on the case and bezel (though the crystal is still as new looking as the day it was made - no scratches or makes at all) I kinda thought it might be time to replace it with a new Yachtsman. I was disappointed to learn from the Watchuseek forums and Suunto's own website that the Yachtsman is now discontinued, so I set about searching the web for a Yachtsman that was possibly a 'N.I.B' 'unwanted gift' or 'surplus stock' or 'end of line clearance' etc. And it was while searching the web that I started to come across pictures of Suunto branded Yachtsman watches with 'stinger' type buttons (The type of buttons that CAN be pressed while underwater) the same as the ones featured on the Suunto X-Lander Military Black, but these seemingly new variants of the Yachtsman have the same model number as the watch I've owned for years (with non-stinger type buttons). I was suspicious of the authenticity of these 'updated looking' Yachtsman watches so contacted Suunto customer services and asked them to clarify if they had released a Yachtsman with these particular buttons. In this I'm referring to the type of buttons that CAN be pressed underwater like the ones on the X-Lander Military Black. I'm not referring to any bezel. Please see the picture attached to my email. gaijin, Thank you for your comments and photos - I really appreciate your contribution. You make a very good point about both Suunto's customer service response to me and my question to them being wrong - I understand what you're saying and agree with you - good point! Can I say, the X-Lander Military Black (or any X-Lander model) button type and it's features, is not the issue needing clarification for me. I only mentioned the X-Lander Military Black as a way to compare and give a visual reference to the updated 'O' Ring type buttons (or as gaijin describes them - 'military' type). The issue I need clarifying is - are the Yachtsman watches with the 'O' ring type (military) buttons genuine Suunto? No doubt many of you are shouting at your computer screen, "Of course they are!" Because you'll have bought one from an official Suunto dealer or direct from the Suunto website. My doubting has simply come about because the Yachtsman is now discontinued, there are no pictures of one with the 'O' ring (military) type buttons on the Suunto website (unless I'm mistaken). My original Yachtsman has plain (without military) buttons. If I could have seen the Yachtsman with the 'O' ring (military) type buttons on the Suunto website, I would have simply concluded that this is a new variation of the Yachtsman and gone in search of buying one. In case you're wondering I did start off by asking Suunto about the Yachtsman buttons, but they misunderstood and replied with information about the bezel, probably my fault but I did include photos. Then my second attempt of asking Suunto resulted in the email response posted at the beginning of this thread. Gaijin is right. Your question is not correct. The presence of the "O ring" buttons ... those with the raised rim are true Suuntos. Mine is. The raised buttons have nothing to do with underwater operation... that is .. don't. Your question to them was about underwater operation. Their answer was no. You are assuming the raised rim has something to do with it. It doesnt. What you are now asking is concerning the rimmed buttons abd authenticity. They are... these are two different questions. Jeff_C, Thank you for your last replies - very helpful. It's true to say, I've struggled to describe the Yachtsman button form to Suunto customer services and the forum members. In defence of my authenticity concerns, I've never known any other Suunto watch case have such different variations of buttons as the X-Lander/Yachtsman case. Thank you for the clarification, I'll set about tracking down a Yachtsman with the 'raised rim' buttons. LOVIN the photo of your X_Lander & Yachtsman

Customers are disappointed with the performance of the wearable computer. Some say that the functionality is terrible, the battery lasts only a day, and the user interface doesn't appear to work. The original watch faces are not very functional and the heat map doesn''t make much sense. The Suunto app didn't do anything new that they couldn't get in any other app. Some customers also mention that the watch is useless as anything but a watch and that the voice command doesn'’t work.

How ‘Rolex-robbers’ are targeting tourists across Europe

In some cases, thieves steal to order for italian crime gangs who sell the watches to finance drug smuggling and other criminal activities.

MADRID – Professional “Rolex robbers” are targeting wealthy tourists in holiday hotspots across Europe to steal their expensive watches – often on behalf of organised crime gangs.

Sir Ben Ainslie, the British gold-medal winning Olympic yachtsman, was robbed of his Rolex at knifepoint in Barcelona last week.

Sir Ben, who is leading the UK’s Ineos Britannia team in the America’s Cup yacht race , was cornered by thieves who stole his watch which was reportedly worth €20,000 (£16,866).

The yachtsman was just the latest victim of thieves targeting rich holidaymakers in Barcelona and other popular tourist destinations.

Police hunting the thieves said they may be repeat offenders who were “foreigners”.

Robbers always steal the “Big Four” of luxury timepieces – Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Richard Mille, police said.

In some cases, they steal to order for Italian crime gangs who use the cash from the re-sale of these watches to finance drug smuggling and other criminal activities.

Specialised teams of robbers based in Naples in Italy travel to cities across Europe to target holidaymakers sporting these expensive timepieces, police said.

Spanish officers, working with counterparts in Italy, France and Germany arrested 35 suspected members of these gangs in raids which began in Naples in March.

Europol created a special unit to deal with the Rolex robbers who were targeting wealthy tourists across the Continent.

Tourists are often victims of carefully planned thefts, police said.

One thief will rip the watch from the victim’s wrist as another thief waits to drive off on a scooter and they disappear into the crowds.

Sometimes a third person will be waiting in a car so the merchandise can be “dumped” to avoid detection.

“When the robber grabs the watch, the victim is going to draw his arm back towards him to prevent his valuable possession from being taken away from him and in that reflex action the watch comes off or the robber snatches it from him,” a chief inspector of the Spanish National Police who led the operation in Italy, told i . He did not want to be named.

“His partner is waiting for him on a scooter and they both flee in a matter of seconds. Sometimes they will throw the watch into the window of the car to avoid being caught with it.”

In Spain, these gangs target tourists in Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza, Marbella and Palma de Mallorca. Some pose as delivery riders.

In Barcelona, the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police, have set up a special unit called Titani to tackle the thieves after a surge in thefts.

The unit says thieves fall into three types: opportunists, violent street criminals often from north Africa, and professional thieves working with crime gangs.

Once they have been stolen, the watches are swiftly spirited out of Spain .

“The thieves belong to organised crime gangs. Their trips to steal the watches are paid for by clans who finance these cells. The thieves then give a fee to those who have paid them an advance,” said the police inspector.

The mafia pay the thieves between €6,000 and €10,000 (£5,052-£8,420) in expenses to travel to steal, police said. Thieves will keep about 30 per cent of the value of the watch.

“Some [thieves] work like freelances but most operate directly for the mafiosos. The money from the stolen watches goes to finance drug smuggling and other criminal activities of the Italian mafia. These second-hand watches sell for less than the original price,” said the officer.

Another method the thieves use is the “mirror” trick. This involves banging into the mirror of a Maserati or Lamborghini. The angry driver will lower his window, and the thieves will wrench off the watch.

In 2022, Robert Lewandowski, the FC Barcelona striker, was robbed of his watch worth €70,000 (£59,000) when he stopped to sign autographs.

No arrests have been made in relation to the theft of Sir Ben Ainslie’s Rolex.
