The 470 is a double handed, mixed crew Olympic yacht.

470 Class Association website :  http://www.470.org/

The 470 is a light and narrow boat (length 4.7m and beam 1.7m with a weight of 120kg), that responds easily and immediately to body movement.

The skipper is normally smaller and lighter (1.65m to 1.8m and 55kg to 65kg) and the crew is taller (1.75m to 1.85m yet only 65kg -75kg). The crew's build lets him or her hang far out on the trapeze to keep the boat level in all conditions.

Since our first build in 1993, a Mackay built 470 has helped produce Olympic glory and world champion sailors year on year. Over the years we have refined our knowledge on what makes this boat go fast.

Our boats have a reputation for high strength and stiffness . We focus on these two areas so that the boat will hold high rig tension and not flex in the bow and mid sections.

It also means that the tune of the boat will not change through a season of racing so that the rig tensions and mast bends will not alter as the season progresses.

In 2018 we produced a new mould which we believe is the ultimate for a mixed crew combination heading to Paris 2024.

The mould is designed to maximise the energy from body pumping while also making the boat easy to sail. It was designed with help from sailors, Nathan Wilmont and Jo Aleh, who worked alongside our navel architect, Kevin Trotter.

Part of the success with our latest design comes from adding a little bouyancy in the back of the boat which will make it easier to steer in waves and easier to catch small waves downwind. Bouyancy is also added in the front to balance the changes in the stern.

All of the ribs on our boats are vacuum clamped foam with chopped mat and uni-directional rovings on top. We obtain extra strength from the rigidity of the foam itself.

The construction techniques we use give greater longevity and therefore eliminate the need to replace the boat every year or two. We believe that our construction techniques are as advanced as allowed by the rules.

The building process also involves a considerable amount of custom workmanship. We concentrate on building fewer boats but of a very high quality. We have placed the greatest importance on workmanship,  care and attention to detail.

International 470 Class History

In 1963, French architect Andre Cornu designed the two-handed centerboard boat as a modern high performance fiberglass planing dinghy which could be sailed by anyone. And the craft so influenced European sailing that the 470 is directly credited with drawing new sailors to the sport during the 1960s and '70s.

The 470 has been an Olympic class boat since 1976. It is sailed today for both family recreation and superior competition by more than 30,000 sailors in 42 countries worldwide.

In 1988, women officially entered Olympic sailing competition with the first-ever 470 Women's event. This boat is especially well-suited to women's competition because of its light weight, maneuverability and light crew weight requirement.

Can mackay's customise the layout of the boat.

Yes. Nearly all 470 are customised to suit your own preferences.

What can be customised?

We offer options for most control systems on the boats. Go to our 470 order form to see the options available. International 470 Package - Mackay Boats - NZL

Can you do other fitout options not on the list?

Yes. Many teams send us pictures with their own personal systems for us to copy.

What fitout options do the top crews choose?

All teams have something slightly different, but generally most top teams choose the continuous rig tension system (Option c) , the 4:1 up  with 2:1 down centreboard system (Option a) and the carbon jib brackets. These are the only 2 systems that most top teams have in common.

How to do a gelcoat repair?

Small gel coat repairs are relatively easy to do.

What is Gelcoat made up of?

Gelcoat is a polyester product that is cured by using a catalyst called MEKP. (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide)

MEKP is a dangerous substance and should be treated as such when using, being very careful not to get any on your skin or in your eyes.

How can I get the catalyst - MERK?

We cannot ship MEKP so you will always need to buy it separately from your local marine store or fibreglass manufacturer.

How much MERK do I need?

The amount of Catalyst varies depending on the conditions you are using it in, but around 2%-3% will always work.

It is best to use a small syringe or dropper to get the required catalyst rate.

If you have mixed 100gm of gelcoat, then you are aiming for 2ml of catalyst.

What are the Gelcoat colours?

Gelcoats colours are not always a 100% perfect match.

Colour will vary depending on the depth of the repair and the batch.

470  White-  LS30    White PA 337

470  Grey- Grey RAL 7035

Blue = is supplier by Nuplex who have their own code which is not an international code

Does Mackay Boats supply gelcoat?

We supply a small tin (of each relevant colour) with each new boat.

Order additional gelcoat from our store, although it cannot be shipped by courier.

How do I do gelcoat repairs?

Doing gelcoat repairs is an art that improves with experience.

Making sure the surface is prepared well and keyed up is critical.

Overfill and then sanding back is a slow and time-consuming process.

Be very careful not to scratch the boat around the repair.

You shouldn’t sand the original surface around the repair with any paper coarser than 600grit.

Mask around the repair to protect the boat.

You can initially use a file or 150g to take the high parts off the filling, but don't use the coarse paper for too long or you will end up with scratches in the finished repair.

Once you have it fair with 600g, you can work your way through the sandpaper grades until you finish with 1500grit before cutting and polishing.

We would typically use 600g, then 800g or 1000g, then 1200g, then finally 1500g.

470 SPEED GUIDE BY SÎME FANTELA

Who sails the 470.

470 sailboat new

What does it take to be successful in the 470?

Who does what on the boat, what are the keys to rig set-up, what are the keys to rig tuning.

470 speed guide US Sailing Team upwind light air

Upwind Sailing

Where does each person sit on a 470 in light air, what are the key changes in different conditions, what do you focus on when trimming the 470 main, what do you focus on when trimming the 470 jib, what are the key adjustments to make when wind and sea state increase, any other advice about gear changing in a 470, what's the typical conversation between 470 helm and crew.

470 speed guide US Sailing Team downwind light air

Downwind Sailing

What 470 spinnaker would you recommend, where does each person sit in a 470 downwind, what are the key adjustments to make sailing downwind, what’s the most important thing about 470 trimming downwind in light air, what’s the most important thing about 470 trimming downwind in heavy air, what is a typical conversation downwind.

  • What mode do we want to achieve (high and fast, or low and slow)?
  • Is the Oscar flag up so we are allowed to pump?

Any special considerations to sail the 470 well downwind?

470 Speed Guide By Sîme Fantela upwind sailing Miami

Boat Handling

Top three tips to starting a 470 well.

  • Try to keep the flow on the rudder and centerboard as long as you can. Once you lose that, it can take some time to attach again.
  • Always fight for space down to leeward. If you don't have enough, you're not going to survive the first 100 meters.
  • Identify the last possible moment for a double tack. And whether you double-tack or not, know the right time for good acceleration and the right exit angle.

Any tips for 470 downspeed boat handling?

What is the most common mistake when tacking a 470, what does each person do in a tack, key tip for good light-air tacks in a 470, key tip for good heavy-air tacks, key tip for good light-air jibes, key tip for good heavy-air jibes, what’s the best way to set a 470 spinnaker who does what.

  • Come in off the trapeze wire.
  • Take the spinnaker tack out of the spinnaker bag with one hand, while pulling on the windward barber-hauler/twing with the other hand.
  • Hook the pole to the sheet, topping lift, and mast - Jaws up!

470 speed guide US Sailing Team spinnaker set

What’s the key to a good 470 spinnaker takedown?

Personal Tip: We always have a windward takedown, because we have a storage bag on each side of the boat.

Doing a 720 penalty turn is slow. What are the keys to minimizing the pain?

How easily does the 470 broach or capsize, how do you recover from a 470 capsize, what are the most common boat helming mistakes made in the 470 class, any suggestions for drills to improve 470 boat handling.

470 Class: Optimistic about its future

Published on October 25th, 2021 by Editor -->

There are some one design classes, such as the Star and Finn, which can make the transition when their boat is no longer used in the Olympics. Their history, popularity, and core constituent can carry on the torch. But for the 470 Class, their status seems less secure.

While the 470 Class has nearly 60 years of history, its commitment to Olympic-level competition puts a lot of eggs in one basket.

Excessive kinetics are now the norm, requiring elite fitness for peak performance. And now the class will have its boat used in the new Mixed Two Person Dinghy event for Paris 2024, thus impacting its current male and female division participation.

However, 470 Class President Andreas Kosmatopoulos remains optimistic in this report to class members:

470 sailboat new

A new Olympic era has begun for the 470 class. Merging two Olympic disciplines into one has created the exciting Mixed Dinghy Event for 2024 and beyond. Strong and immediate competition has already provided new challenges and great opportunities for our many recently-formed teams.

Olympics The Tokyo Olympic Games was a triumph for the 470 Class. The quality of the fleet was impressive. The best-ever 470 Olympians, Hannah Mills from Great Britain and Mathew Belcher from Australia, received their third Olympic medal each, both with two gold and one silver. Incredible!

As a former double-handed sailor, the images I most cherished were the reactions at the last race’s finish line at the Europeans, Worlds, and Olympics — that last hug with your teammate knowing that the journey had now come to a close.

Olympic Gold and Silver medals in the women’s class were won by boats built over three years ago — proving the impressive durability and quality of the 470 Olympic equipment. Juniors aged 16th and 17th years old competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games, a lifetime opportunity achieved by their skills and the existence of the 470 dinghy! Rules We have received many messages regarding the Oscar flag (kinetics rule), compasses (with tactical features), and other concerns. We are fully aware of the necessity of change and the impact those decisions will have on your future preparations. We respect that time is limited and want to work with you for the best outcome.

According to our constitution there is a specific procedure that we must follow in order to decide and validate any and all potential class changes. Soon we will announce an online Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting. Should changes be adopted, those items will then need to be approved by World Sailing in the coming year. Meanwhile, any changes will become public knowledge so that you may craft your training accordingly.

We are working hard and carefully in order to provide equal opportunities and a fair environment to all the sailors and coaches who wish to express their voice. A survey will be released soon but please continue to send your thoughts, comments, and suggestions to the 470 Management Committee at [email protected] . All topics appreciated!

And, as ever, please also work with and through your MNAs. We look forward to your recommendations and proposals. This is truly a world-wide effort.

Vision With the 470 we have a powerful global tool. The International 470 Class Association will focus on world-wide development and support for teams from emerging nations. This includes an emphasis on equipment, coaching, and participation opportunities.

Our strategy is very much centered on a wider expansion of the 470 class and the attraction of youth to sailing. We are encouraged by many ongoing discussions with our stakeholders. Together we will strengthen our class and create new partnerships and synergies.

I wish you all fair winds.

Editor’s note : The problem with asking class constituents what they want is the consensus does not include the voice of people who quit the class. Additionally, the loudest voices tend to be those at the top of the fleet, and their desires tend not to be in line with participants down the rank that create the foundation for any enduring class.

Spinnaker Pump Halyard System

A 1:2 reverse purchase on the halyard allows the skipper to raise the spinnaker twice as fast. Pulling the pump handle .6 m (2 ft) off the cockpit floor raises the spinnaker 1.2 m (4 ft). A 1:5 shock-cord halyard take-up system automatically manages accumulating line during the rapid chute deployment.

The cascaded vang uses super strong single, double, and triple 16 mm blocks for a powerful 16:1 mechanical advantage. The skipper can play the vang from either side of the boat.

Two-Car Mainsheet

This fast-tacking two-car system halves the distance a single car would travel. The bridle and the 2:1 side-to-side traveler controls raise and lower the floating mainsheet block for perfect mainsail twist. Mainsheet tension tightens the leech and reduces twist.

Class History

The International 470, designed in 1963 by 505 sailor André Cornu, is a high-performance planing dinghy for both men and women. Responsive to weight placement, this two-person one-design is tactically demanding and requires fluid coordination between the skipper and crew. The 470 is easy to sail, but racing and flying the spinnaker from the trapeze provides additional challenges for sailors. The 470 made its Olympic debut in 1976, and in 1988 was selected for the Games first women's sailing event.

2024 470 World Sailing Championship: Preview, schedule and athletes to watch

Paris 2024

As the first major event of the year for the 470 class kicks off, here is everything you need to know ahead of World Championship, which begins on 24 February

Sailing 470 - Tokyo 2020

(Clive Mason/Getty Images)

Kicking off on 24 February, sailing ’s 470 class will see their first major event of the year: the 2024 World Championships.

A total of 63 International teams will drop into the waters of Arenal, Palma Spain for six days of head-to-head competition as the best sailors from across the globe fight for the world title.

The Championship also serves as the European and North American continental Olympic Qualifier , so stakes are high for those with their eyes on an Olympic quota.

The class, named 470 after the overall length of the boat being 4.70 metres, is a double-handed monohull dinghy with a mixed crew of one male and one female athlete in each rig.

President of the International 470 class and five-time Greek Olympian, Andreas Kosmatopoulos , said “We’re going to see a great competition in Palma.

“There are a number of Olympic qualifying spots being decided here, for Africa, South and North America, and one place for Europe. So the pressure is on, everyone will be at their peak and no one will be holding back.”

Since Tokyo 2020, the men’s and women’s 470 classes have merged into a mixed event, leaving athletes and spectators with one big question: who will be at the helm?

According to Kosmatopoulos, “there is obviously an element of strength and fitness required in the 470 but it is primarily a game of athletic chess. It doesn’t seem to matter who is on the rudder, who is steering the boat, what’s more important is the way that the helm and crew function together as a team. So with 470 Mixed we have the perfect test for men and women.”

As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024

Athletes to Watch

Japan’s Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka are the current world title holders, who cruised their way to gold in the medal race at the 2023 World Championships in the Hague . The two competed separately at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on their home turf, both having finished in seventh in their respective men’s and women’s classes.

Having joined forces to compete in the mixed class, the pair is strong across a range of conditions and are looking to defend their title in Palma.

Spain’s Jordi Xammar Hernandez and Nora Brugman will not only be competing on their home turf, but have consistently landed on the podium since the 470 class turned to the mixed format. They were runners up in both the 2022 and 2023 World Championship, and will be looking to top that this year.

Great Britain’s two-time Olympian Chris Grube and partner Vita Heathcote are strong contenders for the title, along with GB teammates Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris .

France, Germany and People’s Republic of China could also be standouts among the competitive field in Spain.

Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez Garcia-Paz of Team Spain compete in the Men's 470 class at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

470 presentation

The 470, a fine and very seaworthy dinghy.

With close to 38,000 units distributed worldwide, there are many opportunities and good deals are commonplace. This boat is also perfectly adapted for cruising for all sizes. With little canvas, the 470 is perfectly suited to mixed crews and is particularly at ease in the breeze.

The most well-known shipyards are : Morin, Nautivela, Mackay, Ziegelmayer.

470 dinghies prices, brands, program

For leisure: aim for an old 470 from the Morin, Lanaverre, Parker or Roga yards. These boats will be affordable, but will require some refurbishment or restoration. The budget for this programme starts at 500 or 1000€ depending on the condition, the equipment and the level of maintenance.

For a mixed programme, touring, local regatta, a more recent boat, with better performance and better sails will be preferred, a Nautivela from the 2000s for example will do the job well, you should aim for between 2000 and 3000€ to find a second-hand boat in good condition and well equipped.

For a regatta and competition programme, you will need a high-performance 470. A rigid, well equipped and optimised boat: the price will necessarily be higher and you should aim for 470s produced by Mackay or Ziegelmayer.

A new 470 from Mackay Boats for example is sold for over 20,000€. Second hand 470s can be found for as little as 500€.

Sailboat Review: Dufour 41

  • By Herb McCormick
  • September 17, 2024

Dufour 41

When it comes to a discussion of the great European naval architects of contemporary times—and it’s a long list, indeed—certain names immediately pop to mind. Many are French. Philippe Briand made his mark creating boats for a roster of production builders (Baltic, Jeanneau, CNB) before pivoting to the superyacht set (Perini Navi, Royal Huisman). Jean-Marie Finot was more or less the father of an era of the best Vendée Globe solo round-the-world racers ever to compete in that grueling contest. Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP Design) are the current masters of offshore multihulls. The talented tandem of Jean Berret and Olivier Racoupeau are ubiquitous as the creators of many French brands, and sit at the forefront of their profession.

To me, however, one of the more underrated European design mavens, and one who definitely belongs in that rarefied grouping, is Umberto Felci. While Felci was born in Milan and still operates from his base in Italy, I’ve always considered him a huge influence in French boatbuilding—largely because of his longtime association with Dufour Yachts, where he’s been the principal designer for some 15 years.

During that time, I’ve sailed many a Felci boat, as he’s been a consistent presence in Cruising World ’s annual Boat of the Year contest . He has won multiple times with his Dufour entries, including the 560 Grand Large (2014), the 382 Grand Large (2015), and the 520 Grand Large (2018). All of these Grand Large boats shared a similar DNA, and the Dufour booths at the major boat shows were easily recognizable for their similar lines and matching beige canvas dodgers and sail covers. The only huge difference across the fleet was their respective sizes.

All that changed in a big way in 2019, after the Fountaine Pajot group acquired Dufour and decided to make each new offering a singular model in form and styling. Which brings us to Felci’s newest design, the Dufour 41.

Dufour 41

Aesthetically, it’s safe to say that the bright-blue Dufour 41 at this past year’s Annapolis Sailboat Show in Maryland was one of the more distinctive-looking yachts on display. It has a rounded bow, ample beam, and not one but two chines, both carried almost the entire length of the boat—one just above the waterline, another just below the reverse sheer line, which is accentuated by prominent molded bulwarks. This boat looks and feels much larger than its 41 feet length overall. Forward, an integrated bowsprit for the ground tackle and the tack point for the asymmetric kite heightens the futuristic vibe. As does the series of three sleek windows in the hull (along with the additional pair of windows overhead in the coachroof). There is not a stick of timber to be found anywhere.

Topsides, the combination of wide side decks and outboard shrouds makes for easy egress when moving forward or aft. The emphasis on “outdoor living” is underscored by a generous cockpit with twin wheels (but, as with all Dufours, a single rudder, which makes backing down easier and with more control). There’s also wraparound seating, including a cushioned daybed, as well as a drop-down transom, which doubles as the porch/platform for the barbecue well aft. All this is revolved around a table—a pretty sweet, comfortable layout that lends the impression of lounging aboard a much bigger boat.

All the related equipment is first-rate. There’s B&G instrumentation, including the chart plotter and autopilot; a Quick vertical windlass with helm controls for the Delta anchor; and a Side-Power (Sleipner) bow thruster, which I reckon is a luxurious touch on a 41-footer. Our test boat was set up with a nice set of Elvstrøm sails, including a traditional mainsail (an in-mast furling mainsail is available) with a cool stack-pack arrangement that tucks into itself and is secured with shock cords. For our Boat of the Year trials, we test all the emergency rudders, and the one on the 41 was exceptional.

Construction is straightforward and robust. The hull is vacuum-infused with solid glass below the waterline and a foam core above. There are a pair of molded-in channels for the plumbing and electrical wiring. The plywood bulkheads are laminated to the hull. The keel is cast iron. And, as with every Dufour going back to the company’s origins, a wine rack is stashed under the floorboards.

Ardizio Design is responsible for the belowdecks accoutrements, accommodations and floor plan. Its team used those aforementioned chines and, more specifically, the voluminous interior that the chines created, to wide advantage. As with Dufour’s other models, there are three packages of features, trim and equipment—on the 41, these are labeled Adventure, Ocean and Performance—depending on how the boat will be used (basic sailing, dedicated cruising or racing). With the 41, there are also two interior options: either three or four staterooms. Both have a straight-line galley to starboard, with the dining table and wraparound settee to port.

Dufour 41 galley

Our test boat had the three-stateroom layout, with a spacious master forward and a pair of double-berth staterooms aft. It also had three heads, which, to be honest, seems like a bit of overkill on a 41-foot boat. The second head, in the center of the boat, can be replaced with stowage, which is the setup I’d prefer.

The 41 sports a double-spreader rig with swept-back spreaders and a self-tacking jib. The double-ended German-style mainsheet, anchored at midboom, is easily trimmed with a pair of electric winches (an optional electric winch for the mainsail is available). There’s no traveler; after all, this is a cruising boat.

Under power, the 50 hp Volvo Penta with a saildrive configuration had us zipping along at better than 6 knots. This was one of the quieter boats, decibel-wise, in the 2024 fleet. But we were all itching to hoist the sails, and we were not disappointed. At first, in a fitful breeze that was just filling in, we still made over 5 knots in 6 to 8 knots of wind. Soon enough, the pressure built into the 10- to 12-knot range, just in time to hoist the boat’s big asymmetric kite. On a tight reach, we made an effortless 7.5 knots, and the helm was just delightful, with only a light three-finger touch required for full control.

The new Dufour 41 from Dufour Yachts shipyard, in Palma

Those Grand Large prizewinners from years past were, of course, all Felci designs. While this new Dufour looks absolutely nothing like its older siblings, it sails just as well, if not better. Felci may have changed the recipe under the company’s new regime, but he hasn’t forgotten that what we really want is pretty simple: We want to go for a fine sail.

Did You Know?

French boatbuilders were pioneers in fiberglass-sailboat manufacturing. Naval architect/engineer Michel Dufour joined their ranks in 1964 with the launching of the Sylphe, a radical (for its time) 21-foot pocket cruiser with a masthead rig and fin keel with attached ballast bulb. More than 400 were built in a 10-year production run.

Dufour has ramped up its introduction of new models in the past five years, and now has nine in production ranging from 37 to 61 feet, with a 44-footer on tap to be introduced in the United States this fall. Of that collection, the company’s 41, 470 and 530 are all available with electric auxiliary-propulsion options.

Dufour has laid out an aggressive growth strategy, planning to introduce two models each year for the next several years, and replacing its entire fleet within four years. As for the 41, a company representative said that about a third of the run will go to private owners, a third will be purchased by charter operators, and a third will go into charter-management programs.

What countries are the best at sailing?

When it comes to sailing, two nations are traditionally dominant: Great Britain and the United States.

Great Britain leads all nations in sailing gold medals (31) and total medals (64), while Team USA has the most silver medals (23) and second-most total medals (61).

Norway is third in gold medals with 17, trailing only Great Britain and the U.S. France, meanwhile, is third in total medals with 49.

In recent years, Great Britain has only gotten better at sailing. The country has won the most sailing medals at five of the last six Olympics, only losing out to Australia in 2012. The Brits won three golds and five total medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the U.S. was shut out.

DeLand power boat builder indicted in Ohio, sued for $270K by New York man for fraud

New York resident, Terrance Weber said he traded in his 30-foot Spectre performance boat to Todd Lamb of DeLand in an agreement to have a new boat built. Lamb took his money and did not deliver on the new boat nor did he return the trade-in. Weber is suing Lamb in a Volusia County court for more than $270,000.

Terrance Weber wanted to repower his 30-foot Spectre performance boat so he reached out to a DeLand company that builds the "go-fast" water vessels. But three years later he's still in "paradise without his boat" and out more than $270,000, according to a lawsuit.

It doesn't look like he will be getting any relief anytime soon, either. In July, owners of the boat-making company, Todd Allen Lamb, 50, and his wife Karen Nicole Lamb, 42, were each indicted in Ohio on nine counts, including felony charges of grand theft.

And in a bizarre twist, Weber is also in trouble with the law. On December 24, 2022, he allegedly paid a man to steal a boat from Lamb's DeLand shop and faces charges of burglary and grand theft of more than $100,000, according to court records.

It is a complex tale that is playing itself out in courtrooms in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Volusia County, Florida, with no obvious takeaways other than to "let the buyer beware" when it comes to high-speed boats and that it doesn't pay to take the law into your own hands, even if you feel like you've been stiffed.

Who is Todd Lamb?

Todd Lamb and his family got a warm welcome when he relocated his high-performance boat company, Spectre Powerboats , to a 26,000-square-foot space at DeLand Municipal Airport from central Ohio, according to a December 2021 press release.

“We are very happy to be in Florida, closer to 85 percent of our customers,” he said in the Team Volusia Economic Development Corp. release. “And we are especially glad to have landed in the DeLand area of Volusia County. The area offers an exceptional quality of life and an excellent business climate. “

The release says Lamb is a veteran of boat building and racing, starting in 1992 at the age of 18 when he built small racing boats out of crashed boat parts.

“I couldn’t afford to build new ones, so I built new boats from recycled and discarded boats. In a way I sneaked into the industry," he said.

Government officials welcomed Lamb and his wife Karen, who worked at the company, as well as their teenage daughter.

“The addition of Spectre Powerboats to our corporate roster. . . underscores DeLand’s role in hosting sports-related activities," said Nick Conte, DeLand's economic development manager at the time.

“We welcome Spectre Powerboats to our community and our growing list of marine manufacturers,” echoed Volusia County Manager George Recktenwald. “Spectre’s move to Volusia County is another indication that this is a great place to do business.”

Lamb said Team Volusia was instrumental in the site search process and made presentations to local partners who could provide services and support to Spectre. “Your advice and assistance helped us make many important decisions in a timely manner, keeping our relocation on time,” he said.

The locals may not have been so helpful if they had done a Google search on the new resident.

Prior to moving to DeLand, the Lambs were living in Bellefontaine, Ohio, a small town northeast of Dayton. According to the FBI, in October 2013, Todd Lamb pleaded guilty in the U.S. Southern District Court of Ohio to selling a Mack dump truck to more than one buyer.

Selling the same truck twice

After he delivered the truck to the first buyer, he falsely told the second buyer that the truck had been stolen from the seaport in Jacksonville. He told the second buyer, who was from Wyoming, that he would refund the purchase price but did not, FBI investigators said.

The Wyoming buyer got part of his money eight years later when Lamb pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles, and one count of wire fraud.

Investigators said Lamb and his wife, Karen, conducted consignment sales and auctions of vehicles, equipment, and other goods and merchandise under the companies Almite Services and Almite Auctions. He also stole and sold vehicles through his businesses, including a Caterpillar backhoe to the Wyoming buyer.

The Columbus News Dispatch reported in 2014 that Todd Lamb was sentenced to a year in prison.

According to the FBI, Karen Lamb pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making false statements relating to the transfer of a vehicle title and was sentenced to six months’ probation in October 2012.

In the Ohio indictment, announced last summer, the couple was charged with three counts of fourth-degree felony grand theft, third-degree felony aggravated theft, theft from an elderly person, third-degree felony grand theft, fourth-degree felony defrauding creditors, second-degree felony telecommunications fraud, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.

The indictment, provided to the Daytona Beach News-Journal by the Logan County Clerk of Courts, shows the Lambs engaged in the alleged criminal activity starting in 2017.

Between Dec. 19, 2017, and June 19, 2020, the Lambs "deprived an Ohio man of property and services" and stole $143,650 along with two Mercury boat engines, the document states.

From Feb. 9, 2018, through Oct. 10, 2018, the Lambs reportedly stole $209,339 from another Ohio man.

An elderly man from the state lost $300,462 to the Lambs who never delivered property or services to him, the court document outlined.

All the funds taken from the Ohio residents were paid to the Lambs to build boats, said Eric Stewart, the Logan County prosecutor handling the Lambs' case.

"They never got their boats and they did not get their money back," Stewart said.

The Lambs also deprived Caterpillar, a heavy equipment company, of two hydraulic excavators in March and December 2020. And, the couple also defrauded Caterpillar as creditors of more than $7,500 but less than $150,000, the Ohio prosecutor said.

"He signed a lease putting little money down, and then he sells the machines and never paid the lease," Stewart said.

Stewart said Todd was released by the Ohio court but a GPS ankle monitor was placed on him until his trial next year. Karen Lamb was released on her own recognizance, the Logan County prosecutor said.

Reached at Spectre Powerboats business telephone number, and asked about the allegations, Todd Lamb said that he had no idea what a News-Journal reporter was asking him about and that the reporter had the wrong number and hung up.

But Lamb did reach out to his alleged victims after he was arrested in Volusia County on Ohio warrants and released on $10,000 bail.

Weber provided the News-Journal with a voicemail he claims Todd Lamb left him. In that voicemail, Lamb identifies himself and says he wants to make things right with Weber and the Ohio victims.

"I'm sure you guys are very upset with me, but I'd like to see if there's a way we can work all this out," he said in the voicemail recording.

Failure to deliver

In November 2021 Weber, of New York, agreed to have Todd Lamb build him a new 32-foot Spectre performance catamaran for $340,000, including a trade-in, he said.

"When he dropped in an amazing manufacturer's discount, I was sold," Weber recalled in a telephone interview of the deal he made with Lamb.

As part of the agreement, Weber traded in his used Spectre boat for $80,000 putting down a $10,000 deposit on Nov. 1, 2021. According to a lawsuit filed by Weber, he has paid Lamb, including the trade-in value, $271,787.50.

For the first four months, everything appeared normal but then Lamb stopped giving Weber updates on the boat. The New York businessman then hired another boating company in Florida to handle the boat building.

"He (Todd Lamb) started becoming adversarial and I wondered why he was giving us such an attitude for simple questions he was being asked," Weber said. "Then I Googled him and found that he had served time for scamming people, that he was under investigation for fraud, and I knew I was screwed."

When Weber continuously asked Lamb to provide status reports, he eventually asked the man for his trade-in back. Then Lamb called the police on him, Weber said,

An October 2022 DeLand police report shows Lamb reported Weber's constant contact and asked the police to tell Weber to stop calling him and his employees.

Weber said he tried reaching an agreement with Lamb to get his boat "as is" but Lamb refused. In the end, Lamb did not deliver the new boat and did not return the trade-in, Weber said.

Weber, a small businessman, said the theft has had an emotional impact on him.

"I've laughed, I've cried. I've been through every emotional gamut you could go through," Weber said. "I mean, look at the amount of money they are stealing. It's like taking a house from someone."

Weber said he created a social media page denouncing the Lambs' activities and was contacted by victims in Ohio and Georgia, who have had similar experiences with Lamb.

Weber is suing the Lambs hoping to recoup what he said he paid the couple between November 2021 and July 2022 - $271.787.50 - for the boat they did not deliver, documents detail.

Victim becomes a thief?

Weber said his frustration grew even more when he tried to report Lamb's criminal activity to the DeLand Police Department. He said he made special trips to DeLand to visit the police station to file a complaint but that if "he got more than 30 seconds at the plexi glass," the front lobby's window, it was too much.

Weber said he sent DeLand police a document drafted by his New York lawyer, Mark Seidenfeld, on Dec. 25, 2022, outlining what Lamb did but police did not act on it.

"They told me that Todd Lamb was a legitimate businessman and that my issue was a civil case," Weber said. "But the police readily arrested me over my very own boat."

According to a DeLand police arrest report, on Dec. 24, they responded to an alarm at Lamb's shop. Lamb told them a boat had been taken. He told police that he had an ongoing civil issue with Weber and that Weber had said he would be taking a boat from his business, the report said.

DeLand police spokeswoman Vicki Karr said there is no record of Weber contacting the police prior to the Dec. 24 grand theft arrest.

Police noted that a bay door had been cut open. State police in South Carolina later spotted the 32-foot boat being towed north on Interstate 95 and stopped the vehicle. They arrested Ronnie Dominguez, of Pennsylvania, who said Weber had paid him to tow the boat to New York, an arrest report states.

Weber told investigators that he had paid a sum of money for the boat and that he and Lamb had reached an agreement where he could pick it up. This was outlined in a letter to DeLand police from Weber's New York attorney dated Dec. 25, 2022.

Another lawsuit filed

Weber sued Spectre Marine LLC in April. He alleges in the last five years, the Lambs have opened different boat manufacturing companies under the Spectre name and that they started Spectre Marine, LLC., doing business as Spectre Powerboats at the Summerhill Drive location in DeLand.

"They were not conducting business at that location. It was a criminal enterprise," Weber said.

Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceeds

The lawsuit filed by Weber argues that the Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceeds as their income and have engaged in racketeering activities related to custom powerboat manufacturing.

The Lambs built the boat for Weber but kept increasing the value and then claimed Weber owed them $55,000. The Lambs then sold the boat to a third party, the suit states.

"I am hoping the court will make a judgment against Todd Lamb and his Spectre company," Weber said. "I got robbed, dude. I got straight robbed."

In a statement, DeLand officials said they had a minimal role in getting the Lambs to locate in the city.

"Like any business that relocates to our community, we expect customers to be treated fairly and ethically," they said. "If the allegations are indeed true, we hope justice is served and that those wronged are able to pursue remedies available through our court system,” the statement read.

Recktenwald did not respond to an inquiry from the News-Journal asking for comment. Three Team Volusia executives also did not respond to emails from the News-Journal seeking comment.

Weber awaits his fate in criminal court.

In Paris, a Riverboat Sojourn on the Banks of the Seine

For a week, the novelist Joyce Maynard said good night to Paris from the deck of a péniche, within full view of the Eiffel Tower. Who cared if it rained the whole time?

An illustration shows a scene on the Seine River in Paris. Boats are moored along the banks, and a woman stands on the deck of one, her back to the viewer, as she looks out over the scene before her: a narrow stone bridge, trees, stately buildings, the river itself, and in the distance, the Eiffel Tower rising up beneath a sky with billowing gray clouds.

By Joyce Maynard

There’s something about sleeping on a boat. It’s the rocking, of course, and the sound of the water. It’s also the cocoon effect of containment in a small space tucked away from the world. I’m not talking about cruise ships and luxury yachts here. I’m talking about a vessel that gently rocks, just enough to let a person know she’s not on dry land. If you suffer from seasickness, this could be an issue. As for me, I never sleep better than I do on a boat.

Now imagine this boat is docked in Paris. You wake up to a view straight out of a French movie from the 1950s and finish your day under a full moon.

In June I got to experience that (all but the full moon, but more on that later).

My fixation was not a recent one. I’d been eyeing boats — specifically péniches, riverboats used originally for commercial purposes — for more than 30 years, as long as I’d been visiting Paris. Then, at a party in Paris last fall, my last night in the city before heading home to the United States, I met a Dutch couple — Jan and Lydia — who invited me to their péniche for a drink.

Docked along the Right Bank — midway between the Pont de la Concorde and the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor — my new friends’ péniche sat in the middle of my favorite city, but in a world of its own, away from traffic and crowds. As perfect a combination as I could dream up.

The evening was warm. We sat on the deck as Jan set out wine glasses and a bottle of Champagne. Across the water, the Eiffel Tower sparkled.

“If you ever hear of someone who might like to rent their péniche for a week or two,” I said, “let me know.”

A pleasant level of funkiness

It turns out that you can, in fact, book a Parisian péniche on Airbnb and Vrbo (prices range from under $100 a night for houseboats a few miles outside Paris, in locations like Neuilly-sur-Seine, to $500 a night or more for a luxury péniche in central Paris), as well as through various rental agencies in the city, including Paris Attitude and Bookahouseboat.com . But before I had time to research these, my new friends made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

“When you come back you can stay with us,” Jan said.

In June I returned to Paris. In the months since that fall evening on Jan and Lydia’s boat, I’d had plenty of opportunities to imagine the scenes of warm nights on the deck, Champagne in hand.

But on this June day, it was raining hard when I arrived, the wind whipping off the water.

My Uber dropped me off on the busy thoroughfare directly above the quay where Jan and Lydia’s péniche was moored, which required me to haul my suitcase down a set of steps to the water. A small price to pay.

The péniche was one of a dozen or so lining the riverbank — most roughly the same size, a little over 100 feet, some appointed with cafe seating and planters, children’s playthings (deck space sufficiently open to allow for a tricycle or two), pergolas, and in one case, an amphibious car.

But though a few of the boats appeared to have been elaborately renovated, most conveyed a pleasant level of funkiness.

Watch your footing

My dream of staying on a péniche is not one shared with everyone who visits Paris, or lives there. Even though it costs less to live on a péniche than it would to occupy a space of comparable square footage in one of the better arrondissements in Paris, many Parisians view the vessels as more trouble than they’re worth. And it’s true: All that character and romance requires a certain level of open-mindedness, possession of a baseline level of handy skills, a willingness to come face to face with the elements and sufficient agility that navigating the deck on a windy day won’t put you off.

In most areas where péniche s are docked (including my hosts’), they’re lined up in rows two boats deep, which means that to step onto the vessel on the outside edge, a person has to walk across the deck of the boat pulled up alongside the quay, and then it’s a quick hop across a wooden platform. If you don’t feel like taking a dip in the Seine, it’s a good idea to watch one’s footing. For me, all of that was part of the adventure.

A person unfamiliar with péniche life might imagine small, cramped spaces inside, but the boat belonging to my Dutch friends felt nearly as expansive as a New York City loft — with a kitchen large enough to accommodate a couple of cooks at once, extending out to a dining and living room area, bedrooms at either end, two bathrooms and an area where a captain might sit, if the boat were actually traversing the river, as this one no longer did.

In the old days, when péniches and barges were used to transport goods up and down the river, smaller boats often pulled them — or animals did from the riverbanks. These days, most péniches stay docked, though sometimes their owners haul them away in the off-season for repairs.

A different aspect

In addition to the built-in bed, my room housed a drum set and a couple of guitars (owing to my friends’ participation in a rock band), along with a desk. From the bed, I could look out across the water to the Assemblée Nationale and a row of other buildings along the Left Bank. But the best view was from above.

We’re speaking of the deck, the most important element of a péniche experience. Some péniche owners cultivate elaborate gardens — lemon trees, roses, planters of vegetables — but the main attraction of a péniche deck is how it opens up onto the city’s skyline. Over my many trips to Paris, I’d never beheld what I did from the deck of that boat: an utterly unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower.

The morning after my arrival, I woke to rain, and drank my coffee from the enclosure of the small captain’s cabin. Next morning, more rain. I ventured out anyway, crossing one of the many bridges spanning the Seine for croissants and a baguette.

Back on the boat, there was a little gas stove in the living room. My hosts and I turned it on.

As things worked out, the rain held for the entire week of my stay. But once I let go of my romantic dream of clear and balmy evenings looking out over the water, I was able to embrace a different picture of my time on the péniche. As much as my little cocoon bed sheltered me from the weather, something compelled me to venture out on the deck every night, even when the rain was pelting down its hardest, and the water was dark and choppy. This, too, was Paris. Just a different aspect.

I made it my tradition every evening of my stay to close out each day on the boat by looking out to the Eiffel Tower — one rare constant in this turbulent and shifting world.

One night the fog was so thick it even obscured the lights from the tower, but I could still make out its presence, along with that of the last bateau mouche (each one named for a French movie star from times gone by) transporting passengers from one end of the city to the other.

Bundled up in my friend’s rain jacket, I considered what a gift it was that I could stand under the night sky, rather than staring up at a hotel room ceiling. Somewhere up there, under the clouds, there were stars.

Joyce Maynard’s newest novel, “How the Light Gets In,” was published this summer.
