Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta

This stylish event blends sea, fashion and sailing in sardinia’s porto cervo – and you’re invited..

Giorgio Armani’s passion for sailing is well-known. The designer has often compared the meticulous design of luxury garments to that of yachts, emphasising the shared demand for attention to detail. Therefore, it’s only natural that the brand returns as the Title Sponsor for the third consecutive year of the 17th edition of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ( YCCS ) Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo.

From June 4th to 8th, attendees can look forward to days filled with racing, events, and shopping. The brand invites sailing – and fashion – enthusiasts to immerse themselves in its world through a pop-up at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and a boutique overlooking the iconic Passeggiata.

“Porto Cervo is a real gem, made utterly unique thanks to its special position:
a village immersed in nature and surrounded by water of the most unbelievable colour,” says Giorgio Armani. “This is where the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta takes place, now in its third edition; an exciting sporting event that allows me to bring a little part of my world to this place in my favourite season.”

Armani ’s participation in the YCCS Superyacht Regatta is a natural extension of his brand’s heritage, allowing customers to experience a unique aspect of the maison. For this occasion, the designer developed the Giorgio Armani Vela collection, a special selection of light, breathable, and technical garments and accessories inspired by the world of sailing. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) was founded in 1967 in Porto Cervo, Sardinia by its current president, H.H. the Aga Khan, along with a group of founding members. This non-profit sporting association was created for sailing enthusiasts and has since become renowned for organising prestigious international sailing events, including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup, as well as World and European championships for top one-design fleets and superyacht regattas.

YCCS played a pivotal role in the 1983 America’s Cup by backing Azzurra, the first Italian challenger, which went on to become a legendary brand in Italian sailing. In 1992, the club launched the motor yacht Destriero, which set a transatlantic crossing record that still stands today. The club also participated in the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-2002 with the Nautor Challenge campaign, featuring two boats, one of which had an all-female crew. In 2017, YCCS celebrated its 50th anniversary and introduced the One Ocean sustainability program. In 2020, the club launched the Young Azzurra Sporting program, dedicated to nurturing young Italian sailors and promoting equal opportunities in the sport.

With a win on the final day of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with title sponsor Giorgio Armani, YCCS member Juan Ball’s Swan 115 Moat claimed overall victory, two points ahead of the RP-Nauta 100 Morgana.

The east-southeasterly wind blowing between 12 and 15 knots, with gusts in excess of 20 knots, allowed both the Superyacht and Southern Wind Rendezvous divisions to comfortably complete the course set by the Race Committee: a counter-clockwise circumnavigation of the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena, returning to Porto Cervo via the La Maddalena channel and the Passo delle Bisce strait, for a total of approximately 26 miles. For yachts competing in the Southern Wind Rendezvous, the course was prudently shortened at the Secca di Tre Monti mark to avoid exposing crews to upwind waves in the last few miles before the finish.

The Superyachts set off on schedule with a reaching start at 11.30 a.m., followed by the boats taking part in the Southern Wind Rendezvous. Morgana got off to a good start, hot on the heels of the faster Moat on the long reaching leg that took them up to the north of La Maddalena island, however on the downwind leg to the finish line, the Swan 115 pulled further away from her closest rival to win by 2 minutes 47 seconds in corrected time.

Moat’s tactician, Guillermo Parada, commented on the final race: “Today was a challenging race, with a reaching start. Shortly before the start the breeze had strengthened considerably and so we hoisted a strong-wind gennaker, but then it settled back down to 11-12 knots and changing gennaker on these boats is lengthy and challenging, at the halfway mark we were slightly behind on corrected time, so we had to work hard upwind to recover. I would like to thank the crew and the owner of Moat, who made sure we had everything we needed for a good regatta, and I’m very happy to have won with this team.”

“We are satisfied with our performance today,” affirmed the owner of Morgana, “we had variable wind conditions and we were in the game for the whole of the reaching leg, on the upwind leg we lacked something, we will work on that. Even though we didn’t win, this is the most beautiful race course in the world, our thanks go to the YCCS and Giorgio Armani for the organisation, this was our second time taking part and we plan on coming back for the next edition.”

The prize-giving ceremony took place as usual in Piazza Azzurra, in front of the YCCS, led by Giovanni Tamburi, Vice President of the YCCS Board of Directors, and Anoushka Borghesi, Global Head of Public Relations and Media at Giorgio Armani.

The Silver Jubilee Cup for the winning yacht in the Superyacht Division was presented to Moat’s owner, YCCS member Juan Ball, by Tommaso Sani, Giorgio Armani Project Manager for Special Projects.

The Southern Wind Rendezvous saw prizes awarded by Giorgio Armani’s Anoushka Borghesi and Southern Wind CCO Andrea Micheli to the SW 96 Liberty for Best Performance, the SW 105 Kiboko for Best Boat Handling and the SW 96 Nyumba for Best SW Rendezvous Spirit. Finally the Willy Persico Trophy, in memory of the yard’s founder, went to the SW 100 Padma II.

Siyanda Vato, Captain of Padma II explained: “We are very fortunate to have joined the rest of the fleet this year at the Southern Wind Rendezvous at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta. We had a great time, the owners are delighted with the welcome and the event, there could not have been a better start to our cruising season. I would like to thank the Southern Wind team, who have been great in helping us with anything we needed, and I am personally very happy to be back in Porto Cervo, where I got my start as a racer, this time as a captain. It’s been amazing.”

Edoardo Recchi, YCCS Secretary General: “The Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta draws to a close today, the third edition we have organised together with title sponsor Giorgio Armani whom we thank for their support. The range of weather conditions allowed us to get the fleet out racing every day, as planned. We are pleased that the owners and crews enjoyed themselves on the water and also back on land at the exclusive social events. Our congratulations to Moat, winner of the event, and we look forward to welcoming all the participants to Porto Cervo again next year.”

To mark World Ocean Day, celebrated annually on 8 June, the ledwall in Piazza Azzurra displayed artwork by children from the local secondary schools of Arzachena and Abbiadori, created for the recent YCCS Clean Beach Day.

The next event at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will be the J/24 European Championship for the world’s most popular one-design boat, which will officially kick off on Monday 10 June, with racing getting under way on Thursday 13 and concluding on Sunday 16 June.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, the perfect balance of sport and lifestyle

As forecast, a light north-easterly wind characterised day two of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of title sponsor Giorgio Armani.

The starting line was positioned inside the Passo delle Bisce strait to take advantage of the slightly stronger breeze of around 6-8 knots there. At 12.45 p.m. the Superyacht division set off downwind, unfurling gennakers of over 600 square metres to sail along the channel between the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago and Sardinia itself, leaving the island of Spargi to starboard and finishing, in light air, at the lighthouse on the island of Barrettinelli di Fuori, where the archipelago opens onto the Bocche di Bonifacio off Corsica. Victory in both real and corrected time went to YCCS member Juan Ball's Swan 115 Moat, with Guillermo Parada on tactics and Pablo Difazio at the helm. “Today the air was very light,’ explained Parada, “we got a good start and made the right decisions at some difficult points on the course, with sudden drops in the breeze or changes in direction, so today we claimed our first, and hopefully not last, victory of the day.”

Next up were the yachts taking part in the Southern Wind Rendezvous, whose course was contained within the La Maddalena channel, rounding a mark off Spargi before returning to the starting point. As this was a friendly competition, the crews, with family and friends on board, were able to fully enjoy sailing among the unique rock formations that characterise this part of Sardinia, including the famous bear-shaped Roccia dell'Orso in Palau, which appeared to observe the superyachts from on high as they paraded past. The well-known competitive streak between any two similar yachts was sparked for the two Southern Wind 96 models, Nyumba and Liberty, who reached the finish line almost simultaneously.

armani superyacht cup

Yves Montanari, tactician on Liberty: “The Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta is one of the most iconic events of the first part of the year, bringing together superyachts and owners in a truly fantastic atmosphere. The programme for this event is perfect for sailing in a friendly spirit and, afterwards, having fun with your family at anchor. Today was a light air day and, to be honest, although this is far from a competitive event, there is always a hint of competition. Owners and crews like to challenge each other on the water to see who gets to the finish line first.”

Massimo Galassini, owner of Kiboko: “I think Sardinia and the Costa Smeralda are unique places, it is fantastic to be here, especially with the Southern Wind family. We all know Giorgio Armani, an excellence in the world of fashion at an international level. This partnership with the sailing world is a great opportunity, both for the brand and for us yacht owners. These first two days have been wonderful, but not only for us, for all the people attending the event I think. We came first again today, we have a great crew.”

On arrival at the dock in Porto Cervo there were big smiles all-round after a great day spent on the water, while tonight the “Night in Blue” dinner organised by the Southern Wind shipyard will take place in the village of San Pantaleo.

The forecast for tomorrow indicates very light breeze from the north-east.

The top superyacht regattas to add to your 2024 calendar

Related articles.

From the South of France to St Barths, the superyacht regatta calendar is packed with opportunities for owners to race their boats in stunning settings. Whether you are looking for keen competition or are more interested in the après scene, we are here to help you pick the perfect contest.

Oyster World Rally, Antigua

From 14 january, 2024 .

By the finish of the 22/23 rally, more than 100 Oysters had circumnavigated over the decade that the British builder has been running these rallies. Dozens more will have their chance at the next one, which heads west from Antigua and makes 15 stopovers on the 16-month route.

New Zealand Millennium Cup, Auckland

February 23-26, 2024.

Postponed from 2023, the Millennium Cup 2024 takes place in a new location – Auckland, aka the City of Sails, which eases logistics for international owners. There is also a new multihull division as well. What isn’t changing is the fun racing with a Kiwi flavour.

Superyacht Challenge, Antigua

March 11-17, 2024.

Defining superyachts as vessels over 24.4 metres, this regatta offers four days of lively racing from the entrance to English Harbour as well as relaxed parties brimming with camaraderie in historic Nelson’s Dockyard.

The race is held annually in Nelson’s Dockyard and comprises daily pursuit races, and an optional race around the island, with the start and finish line just off English Harbour. Entrants are divided into three classes — buccaneers, corsairs and privateers — and all compete under the ORC Superyacht Rule.

Rather than a traditional trophy, winners receive barrels of rum, suitably filled in true Caribbean style. Additional awards include best-dressed crew, loudest Caribbean shirt, and a cook-off between crews. In fact, the only trophy awarded is the Gosnell Trophy, which is given to the crew that has "competed in the Spirit of the Regatta" both on the water and ashore.

St Barths Bucket Regatta

March 21-24, 2024.

The St Barths Bucket Regatta attracts some of the finest sailors and sailing yachts from across the world and is always a highlight on the racing calendar. This invitation-only event welcomes around 40 superyachts (usually upwards of 30 metres in length) to the sandy shores of St Barths each year.

The racing has traditionally been on three courses but organisers have said they now have 30 options to choose from.

Off the water, owners have their choice of countless invitations, from private gatherings to the Bucket-affiliated soiree at Tamarin as well as the final awards ceremony party, which is traditionally held at the five-star Eden Rock hotel. At the yacht hop, some owners have been known to fly in thousands of oysters and host aerial silk performers, which proves that the old Bucket spirit of winning the party — if not the day on the water — is still prevalent.

The 2024 fleet is already shaping up nicely with regatta regulars such as the 56-metre Malek , 51-metre Red Dragon and 35-metre Whisper all making a return, with the new 59-metre Maximus also anticipated to join.

Les Voiles de St Barths Richard Mille

April 14-20, 2024.

A relative newcomer to the racing scene, Les Voiles de St Barths may not be steeped in history like many long-timers on this list, but it has swiftly become a calendar staple since its inception in 2010. It welcomes a serious fleet of modified racers and mini maxis - think TP52s and JV72s - among smaller racing boats and a multihull fleet.

Now in its 13th year, the event will see the fleet return to the red-roofed town of Gustavia in St Barths. Like the bucket, the regatta is powered by reliable trade winds that arrive from the east, which means very few days are lost due to unfavourable weather conditions. Racecourses make use of the landscape with clusters of rocks punching out of the water that serve as marks. Some more competitive teams even send divers down to see how close they can get before having to tack off.

Racing is close and competitive but things are much more laid back ashore. The lay day usually consists of a long lunch at Nikki Beach followed by tug of war and diving for bottles of Barons de Rothschild champagne.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta

June 4-8, 2024.

The Sardinian superyacht regatta is back as the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda welcomes Giorgio Armani as its title sponsor for the second year.

Where other regattas may have a T-shirts and flip-flops feel, Sardinia is about glamour in the playground of the Italian elite. It’s not all focused on the nightlife, though; any serious sailor knows racing here is not for the faint-hearted.

“Sardinia is, in my eyes, the most exceptional regatta area in the world,” says the owner of  WinWin . And he's not wrong. Competitors can expect stronger winds from the northwest and have to navigate rocks jutting out of the water in Bomb Alley — the passage between Sardinia and La Maddalena archipelago.

The regatta is always capped off with an evening at Phi Beach —  WinWin ’s owner says it’s the best party of any regatta. It’s a quintessentially Italian summer scene, with guests treated to glorious sunset views and music from top DJs piped through bars and dance floors interspersed among the rocks right on the water.

Entry is open to superyachts with a minimum length of 27.43 metres and the event will also encompass the Southern Wind Rendezvous.

Cyclades Cup

June 14-16, 2024.

The Cyclades Cup is organised by the Yacht Club of Greece in collaboration with World Superyacht Awards judge and owner of the 50-metre  Almyra II , Ilia Rigas. The inaugural regatta is set to take place on the picturesque island of Antiparos, Greece, with BOAT International acting as media sponsor .

The event will welcome sailing yachts over 30 metres to participate in two days of Corinthian Class superyacht racing across one of the world's most spectacular uncharted race courses.

But it will go beyond just a simple sailing weekend in the South Aegean. Offering a chance for owners, guests, captains and crew to come together to celebrate a shared love of boats, the Cup will extend an invite to all motor yachts over 30 metres to gather and enjoy a packed social programme including sunset cocktails, dinners and sightseeing.

Superyacht Cup, Palma

June 19-22, 2024.

A laid-back southern Mediterranean vibe prevails at the Superyacht Cup in Palma, Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta. Leave your jackets and ties at home; this is a shorts and T-shirt event. Uniquely, this regatta is contained within a fenced-in event village, proving that relaxed and informal can also mean ultra-exclusive.

While racing in the Bay of Palma may not offer the same dramatic scenery as the Caribbean, it is ideal for newcomers who may find rounding inflatable marks less daunting than a rocky outcrop, and its more sheltered position means there are no boat-breaking big seas. The race committee has the ability to set courses in the bay to suit the fleet and to really give every yacht a better chance to sail to its rating.

Last year's fixture welcomes a quartet of J Class entries, Svea , Topaz , Ranger and Velsheda .

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

September 8-14,  2024.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the highlight of many a Maxi racing calendar and is back for its 34th edition in 2024. Staged off Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda - known for its rocky scenery and turquoise waters – it continues to attract dedicated owners, highly skilled crews and exceptional yachts.

This year's Cup follows a hugely successful event last year. Racing is open to yachts of at least 18.29 metres and, for the first time this year, multihulls can join its ranks.

Oyster Palma Regatta, Palma

September 21–25, 2024 .

Taking place at the new venue of Port Adriano, this special edition celebrates 50 years of Oyster Yachts. In addition to the friendly competition over four days of racing, there will be an owners’ dinner to commemorate its half-century of building bluewater cruising yachts.

Ibiza JoySail, Balearic Islands

September 19-22, 2024.

Now in its fourth edition and growing exponentially each year, this laid-back regatta welcomes maxis and superyachts for offshore and coastal racing in the Balearic Islands, along with plenty of onshore socialising hosted by STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.

Les Voiles de St Tropez

September 26 – 6 october, 2024.

The Mediterranean big-boat racing season winds down with Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. But don't be fooled, this is no small soirée. The event is the largest gathering of Maxis yachts in the world as owners and crew come together and toast to the last of the summer sun with a week of good old-fashioned racing.

Swan Med Regatta-Tuscany Challenge, Marina di Scarlino, Italy

October 2024 .

New to the calendar last year, the inaugural Tuscany Challenge gathered Med-based Swan owners for a first ever Med-based end-of-season regatta set against the stunning backdrop of the Tuscan archipelago. This Nautor Swan Experience gathering celebrates the entire Swan world across a three-day competition. Hosted by the Yacht Club Isole di Toscana, it determines the world champions in the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36.

Sanlorenzo group acquires nautor swan and launches hydrogen-powered america’s cup chase boats.

American Magic's hydrogen-powered, hydrofoiling chase boat built by Bluegame is designed to be ... [+] sustainable and fast enough to keep up with the team's AC 75

Now that the Sanlorenzo Group of shipyards will be assuming total ownership of the Nautor Group over the next four years. And the Sanlorenzo Group’s Bluegame brand just delivered its first fully-foiling, all-hydrogen-powered chase boat to the New York Yacht Club American Magic America’s Cup team that’s competing for the right to challenge for the America’s Cup in Barcelona in the coming months. Saying Sanlorenzo Group President and CEO Massimo Perotti has been a “bit busy” might be a “bit of an understatement.”

Sanlorenzo Group President and CEO Massimo Perotti

But no matter how you describe it, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of the iconic Nautor Swan sailing yacht brand (and the entire Nautor Group ) along with successfully launching a 100% emission-free powerboat that’s capable of speeds up to 50 knots and has a range of up to 180 miles, shows Perotti’s commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainability.

And as the yachting world continues to consolidate, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of Nautor Swan makes a lot of sense.

Nautor Swan is becoming part of the San Lorenzo Group

“Today, my goal is to propel forwards a brand that is so beloved and respected and ensure its longevity by entrusting it to one of the world’s leading nautical groups, led by Massimo Perotti, one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs in the marine industry,” said Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo when the sale was announced. “This will enable it to reach the many and important potentials for which we have worked with passion and dedication over the years.”

“Signing this agreement represents another milestone for our strategy,” Perotti added. “Nautor Swan’s heritage is revered worldwide for its key ingredients: elegance, quality, performance combined with solidity thanks to the advanced construction techniques, innovation and unrivalled seaworthiness.”

Meanwhile, another Sanlorenzo brand, Bluegame made headlines recently by successfully launching their first Bluegame Hydrogen (BGH) zero-emission, hydrogen-powered chase boat they developed and built for the New York Yacht Club American Magic team to use in the 37th edition of the America's Cup that’s just getting underway in Barcelona this week.

Bluegame developed and built the 100% hydrogen powered America's Cup chase boat was just delivered ... [+] to the American Magic team

It was designed following the strict requirements of the America's Cup Protocol to be able to fly on foils at 50 knots alongside American Magic's AC75 on the racecourse. And the use of hydrogen as the sole propulsion system marks an important milestone in sustainable technology for the entire recreational boating industry.

“From its origins, the history of Bluegame has been one of innovation and courage," Bluegame CEO Carla Demaria said at the launch. "The courage to push boundaries, to go beyond the conventional, and to challenge the impossible, as we did with the BGH. We are proud to participate in the America's Cup alongside the prestigious American Magic team, which has made history as the world's oldest active international sporting competition.”

“Choosing Bluegame for our hydrogen support boat was an easy decision for American Magic”, said American Magic President of Sailing Operations and Skipper Terry Hutchinson. “Bluegame’s cutting-edge marine technology and unwavering commitment to sustainability align perfectly with our values. Their passion for green innovation makes them an ideal partner for this groundbreaking initiative.”

Meanwhile Bluegame’s Head of Product Strategy Luca Santella just touched on how hard this project was. "The creation of the BGH involved a series of extremely complex challenges in terms of design, engineering, and materials research. For this reason, Bluegame assembled a team of exceptional competence, consisting of professionals with extensive experience in the world of the America's Cup. The efforts and significant investments in research and development to achieve the performance, speed, maneuverability, and reliability necessary to successfully support the American Magic team have been rewarded. The result is a vessel that marks a new, historic milestone in the application of cutting-edge technologies for more sustainable boating”.

In the coming weeks, Bluegame will also deliver a second BGH to the Orient Express Racing Team , America's Cup from France.

An attorney who helped acquit missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch among those feared dead in superyacht disaster

A yacht belonging to British tech executive Mike Lynch sunk off the coast of Sicily.

Christopher Morvillo, who helped Lynch win acquittal at a recent trial, and his wife are missing.

Morvillo, a former federal prosecutor, worked on high-profile corruption cases.

Among those missing and feared dead in the aftermath of the sinking of "Bayesian," a sailing yacht linked to British technology magnate Mike Lynch , are Lynch's attorney Christopher Morvillo and Morvillo's wife, according to a colleague. Lynch was reportedly on a cruise with friends and coworkers, including Morvillo, to celebrate his acquittal after facing prosecution for financial fraud related to the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, as well as two others, are still missing.

Gary Lincenberg, an attorney who represented Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain in the high-profile fraud case that recently ended with the acquittal of both men, said Morvillo and his wife "are presumed to be passed away" after the yacht went down near Sicily.

He said the news came shortly after he learned that Lynch's codefendant Chamberlain was killed, struck by a car while jogging on Saturday.

"In the course of 48 hours, I can't process what has happened, but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone," Lincenberg told Business Insider.

Lincenberg said in a follow-up email that Chamberlain "was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity" and that his acquittal preserved his good name, which would live on through his family.

Morvillo's law firm, Clifford Chance, didn't immediately reply to a comment request on Monday. One of Morvillo's family members declined to comment.

Before going into private practice, Morvillo was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan until 2005. He worked on several high-profile corruption cases and comes from a family of well-known New York white-collar attorneys.

Another attorney at the firm, Ayla Ronald, is reportedly among those who survived the yacht's sinking.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, Inoui and V Lead Their Respective Classes

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, Inoui and V Lead Their Respective Classes

June 7, 2023 - Porto Cervo, Italy -  Today saw the third and penultimate day of racing at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta . With the wind from the southeast that built from an initial 10 knots to reach 15-16 knots, the Race Committee set both the Superyacht and Southern Wind divisions on a course that took them clockwise around the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera. The course for the Southern Wind division was approximately 25 miles, while the Superyachts covered a longer course of approximately 36 miles. While the Southern Wind fleet headed under gennakers towards the Bisce pass and then completed the circumnavigation of La Maddalena and Caprera, the Superyachts first rounded the islet of Monaci and sailed to the Tre Monti shallows, before going on to round the archipelago, leaving the island of Spargi and the Barrettinelli lighthouse to starboard, and heading on a run along the coasts of La Maddalena and Caprera before reaching the finish line off Porto Cervo.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta 2023

Both divisions had staggered starts, which got underway for the Southern Wind division at 11 a.m., followed at 12 noon by the starting sequence for the Superyacht division.

The friendly spirit of the Southern Wind Rendez-vous means no classification is drawn up, it can be noted, however, that the SW102 Egiwave and the SW100 Freebird were the most punctual in crossing the starting line at their allocated times.

After their start, the Superyacht fleet caught up with each other in the channel alongside La Maddalena island. Here the members of the afterguards studied the best tactics for reaching with their huge gennakers while seeking to gain any advantage from gusts.

The Superyacht Division

In the Superyacht Cruising Class, the 108 foot Inoui , owned by Switzerland's Marco Vogele , repeated yesterday's win in corrected time, with a narrow margin of 1 minute and 31 seconds - after about 3 hours and 40 minutes of racing - over the 33-metre Pattoo in second place. The Baltic 108 Win Win made a fantastic recovery in real-time, but narrowly missed out in corrected time to finish in third place, 7 seconds behind Pattoo. The Combined Performance & Cruising Class today saw the WallyCento V managing to find clean air as she made her way up the fleet, gradually overtaking the other boats thanks to smart tactical choices backed up by well-executed manoeuvres from the crew.

Pierluigi De Felice , trimmer on V explained: ”With today's stable breeze we were able to push the boat to its best, the performance is impressive, especially on reaches, we are all very satisfied, especially the owner as this is his first regatta."

The WallyCento V

In terms of the overall standings, with today's victory Inoui widens her delta at the top of the Superyacht Cruising Class , where she sits on just 4 points, followed by Win Win and Pattoo respectively, both on 7 points.

The victor in the Combined Performance & Cruising Class will instead be decided in tomorrow's final day of racing, since the provisional overall classification sees V in the lead on equal points with Inoui . Win Win holds third place, just two points behind.

Final Day - Saturday

The forecast for tomorrow indicates wind from the north-west of 9 to 12 knots. Like today, the first start for the Southern Wind division will be at 11 a.m., while at 12 midday it will be the turn of the Superyacht division.

Uri alum tom burnham leads u.s. challenger in 37th america’s cup.

Cup racing opens Aug. 22 with preliminary regatta in Barcelona

American Magic team coach Tom Burnham '93

KINGSTON, R.I. – Aug. 19, 2024 – It’s probably no surprise that sailing led Tom Burnham ’93 to the University of Rhode Island.

Now head coach of the New York Yacht Club’s America’s Cup challenger, American Magic, Burnham grew up sailing in Orange, Connecticut. In his senior year of high school, already competing at the international level, Burnham raced in the 420s championship in Yugoslavia.

As luck would have it, teammates on the U.S. team included some URI sailors who sang the university’s praises. When Burnham returned to Connecticut, it was the spring of his senior year. He had committed to another school, but he took time to visit URI.

“I’ve sailed all my life. I was never a standout superstar but I was always involved in sailing and loved sailing,” Burnham says over the phone from Barcelona, Spain, as American Magic prepares for the 37th America’s Cup, which starts Aug. 22 with the preliminary regatta. “It was one of the main reasons I went to URI, frankly. And the sailing team was really good at the time.”

armani superyacht cup

Burnham’s addition to the URI team didn’t hurt either. In his four years at URI, the sailing team won several national championships and reached the World Collegiate Keelboat Championships – also called the Student Yachting World Cup – all four years. In 1990, the Rams became the only U.S. team to win the World Cup. It’s a distinction they still hold 34 years later.

Led by All-American Lars Guck, the eight-person team beat Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Italy, France, and Australia in a field of nine other boats to take the championship, winning the last three races. Burnham remembers the great team atmosphere among URI’s eight sailors.

“I look back on that team and think of how we had some tough times during the event,” says Burnham, the bowman during the regatta, handling the sails in windy conditions. “It was a pretty long event. There were a lot of challenging conditions and some tough sailing. We worked really hard together and gelled as a team without a whole lot of practice.”

To celebrate, the team drove overnight to Paris after the winning race and ended up at the Hotel de Ville, the city hall of Paris, where the mayor awarded them a trophy. When they flew into T.F. Green Airport  in Warwick, then-URI President Edward Eddy  and others were there to greet them. The team members still stay in touch, Burnham says.

“Funny enough, I got a message just two days ago from one of the women on the team, Tara Walcott, with a photo of us from that trip, just out of the blue,” says Burnham, who lives in Newport. “Lars, the skipper, his son is now a sailor at URI. And my son, who is going to be a senior in high school, wants to apply to URI and be on the sailing team. [We’re] trying to keep the tradition going.”

Burnham, a team captain for two or three seasons at URI, describes himself as a team player, a role player, a team leader – and less of a standout performer. But he has put together a career on the water that would make many envious – while being among the lucky several hundred sailors who make a living at it as a professional.

“There’s no question that my time at URI and my time as part of the sailing team really made a huge impact on my life,”  he says.

His career started by being in the right place at the right time. In 1997, he was living in Newport, doing some coaching and taking care of people’s boats, when he got an invitation to go out for a day with America’s Cup challenger Young America, which was training in nearby Quonset Point. That turned into a job that started a 10-year run of competing in the America’s Cup, including two campaigns with the Italian team, Luna Rossa. In 2017, he returned to the America’s Cup as head coach of Sweden’s Artemis Racing.

He was hired about two years ago to coach the New York Yacht Club American Magic. The mission was to win the 37th America’s Cup, returning the Cup to the yacht club that held it for 132 years. The mission starts Aug. 22 when American Magic gets its first close-up look at the four challengers – Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and France – and defending champion Emirates Team New Zealand in preliminary regatta. The racing starts for real Aug. 29 with the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin regatta. The regatta’s winner will face New Zealand for the America’s Cup, starting Oct. 12.

In those two years readying for the Cup, American Magic has put together its eight-man crew and substitutes and built a brand new AC75, the 75-foot-long monohull racing yacht that the Cup adopted in 2021. The yacht – Patriot – was the work of the club’s more than 40 engineers, about a third of the club’s total workforce. Patriot was built in Portsmouth at the yacht club’s manufacturing facility and flown to Barcelona on a huge Antonov cargo plane.

armani superyacht cup

“The whole technology, construction, and design side is really a big part of the program with America’s Cup teams,” he says. “So that’s really exciting.”

Asked about his role as head coach, his first thoughts go to creating an inclusive team atmosphere.

“My real goal, my focus as a coach, is to create the environment for learning … where people feel comfortable asking questions and allowing themselves to be open to input, feedback and learning together,” he says.

As the crew practices off the Port of Barcelona, Burnham coaches from a chase boat, following behind Patriot and communicating directly with its crew. When racing begins, he will be in the chase boat, but stationed to the side of the race course and not allowed communication with Patriot. “That’s part of the reason why fostering this atmosphere and getting guys to work together and problem-solve is so important,” he says. “They have to be self-reliant and deal with things as they come up while they’re racing.”

The crew will get to start testing their pre-race preparation when the preliminary regatta starts. It’s strictly a dress rehearsal for organizers and racing teams – no one’s keeping points.

“We’re working through different starting strategies and techniques on how we’re sailing the boat. Then there’s the new technology going on the boat every day,” Burnham says about their practices. “[We’re deciding] how much we want to keep changing things and continuing to evolve; or, do we lock down some of the technology so we can be consistent with how we’re sailing the boat. Because you learn it really well when it’s not changing as much.”

Asked to handicap the Cup, Burnham starts with his standard line: It will be close and come down to execution on race day.

But he adds: “I certainly like our sailing team … and I think the boats are going to be relatively similar. There are going to be some boats that have better days than others in terms of wind conditions. There might be some teams that are great in heavy air but not so good in light air.
