“In my first few months at Maritime during the first lockdown, it was clear that people come first at Maritime. The onboarding process worked well even when I had to work remotely!. From the very first day I felt welcomed and immediately part of the team,” she says.

Alison knew from day one what her initial path would look like here at Maritime, due to the strong processes in place. Plus, she explains that “There is a real sense of purpose in the work we do and people work together to make things happen.”

There is so much satisfaction to be gained from contributing to our vital purpose. But the benefits of being part of our team run much deeper than that. We're an employer that truly cares about our team. We like to think it's evident in the everyday interactions and support that happens here. We have the courage to do things differently and the ambition to step up and lead where we need to.

These are much more than just words on a wall or a web page. They are lived and breathed by all of us, and it is something you will notice.

Care | Kia Tika

"When it comes to onboarding people, you get a real understanding of your role and the purpose of what they'll be doing. As a government organisation we're still at that size where everyone knows everyone. You'll not only feel welcomed, but you also have that sense of purpose and understanding of what Maritime do and where you fit in"

What's the job really like?

Bailey Puata

Bailey Puata

Launch your seafaring career.

For Bailey Puata working as a fishing deckhand inspired his ambition for a career at sea.

"I left college midway through Year 12 to give it a crack on Sealord’s fishing boats. Hopefully I will get to bosun or second mate in the next few years, and in the end have my own boat and be a skipper.”

Bailey is taking every opportunity to gain qualifications to help him on his journey. "Last trip off, I got my deckhand ticket. I’ve also got a forklift licence and am getting my crane licence soon.”

Work hard and be a team player

Bailey says it can be hard work on the boats. “I shoot the gear (nets) over the back and six hours later we haul it all up on board. It gets tipped down into the factory and we help out with the packing and filleting and driving the machine."

Having the right attitude is key for a deckhand. “You've got to have a good work ethic and be able to work together within a team."

Excitement at sea and well-earned rest

Fishing offshore in all weathers tests any fishing deckhand but Bailey likes it when it’s rough. “It makes you a lot more aware and adds a bit of excitement. And the six-weeks on, six-weeks off roster gives me plenty of time to chill out!”

  • 'Indescribable' crew errors led to Sicily shipwreck, yacht maker says

By Matteo Negri for Reuters

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters arrive in Porticello harbor near Palermo, with a third body at the back of the boat on August 21, 2024, two days after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found four bodies, a source close to the search told AFP. The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout. Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy. A series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew led to the shipwreck in which British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others died earlier this week, the yacht manufacturer's chief executive has told Reuters .

The British-flagged Bayesian , a 56-metre-long superyacht with 22 people aboard - 12 passengers and 10 crew - capsized and sank within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily.

"The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors, the impossible happened on that boat ... but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell," Giovanni Costantino said in an interview.

It was also reported he was spoken to for about two hours by Italian investigators.

Earlier this week media, including the BBC and ABC, reported the yacht's captain was James Cutfield who is from New Zealand. He had told local media of the waterspount that engulfed the yacht, saying they "just didn't see it coming."

Costantino helms The Italian Sea Group, which includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the Bayesian in 2008. The vessel has been refitted twice, last in 2020, but not by Perini.

The chief executive ruled out any design or construction errors, which he called unlikely after 16 years of trouble-free navigation, including in more severe weather than on Monday.

He blamed the Bayesian 's crew for the "incredible mistake" of not being prepared for the storm, which had been announced in shipping forecasts.

"This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance," he said.

Costantino said passengers should have been summoned out of their cabins and assembled at a point of safety while the boat was being prepared for the storm by pulling up the anchor, closing doors and hatches, lowering the keel to increase stability and other measures.

Six out of 12 passengers died in the shipwreck, and five bodies were found inside the wreck. Emergency services are still trying to locate the body of the last missing person, Lynch's daughter Hannah.

Had correct procedures been followed, all passengers would have gone back to sleep after one hour "and the next morning they would have happily resumed their wonderful cruise," Costantino said.

Another yacht anchored near the Bayesian escaped unharmed. The captain of the sunken yacht and other crew members have not commented publicly on the disaster, while Italian prosecutors investigating it are due to hold a press conference on Saturday.

Chef Who Died in Sicily Yacht Sinking ‘Loved’ His Job and Used Money to Help His Parents, Friends Say

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef, was remembered by friends as a role model and a "one-of-a-kind special human being"

Recaldo Thomas/Facebook

Chef Recaldo Thomas is being remembered by loved ones after the cook’s body was discovered near the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

After being struck by a storm on Monday, Aug. 19, the  Bayesian sank around 5 a.m. local time off the coast of Porticello, the Italian coast guard said in a statement that was previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At the time the yacht sank there were 22 people on board, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

In the immediate aftermath, 15 people were rescued, according to the coast guard, while a body was retrieved near the vessel and  later identified as Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef.

Antonio Cascio/Bloomberg via Getty

Rescue officials confirm to PEOPLE that the chef's birth name was Recaldo, but that he also went by Ricardo.

A friend who said she spoke to Thomas “nearly every day” told The Independent that he “was a one-of-a kind special human being.”

“He loved his life, his friends and his job,” she added.

Meanwhile, while speaking with the BBC , a friend of over two decades remembered the chef as somebody young children from Antigua looked up to.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after," said friend Eli Fuller. "The kids would see all these White people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man traveling all over the world — it was important for our community."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Meanwhile, Gareth Williams, who had known Thomas for 30 years, said that Thomas lived on the Caribbean island during the yachting off-season and worked in part to help his parents.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house," Williams said. "He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Six passengers remained missing after the  Bayesian  went into the water and PEOPLE previously reported that  five bodies have since been found  in the wreckage.

Although Italian authorities have not formally identified the bodies that have been recovered, the missing have previously been identified as  Mike Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur, and  his daughter Hannah , as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International  Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy , and New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo  and his wife, Neda.

Search efforts are ongoing, officials say.
