Updated hybrid superyacht concept Kairos presented by Oceanco

Dutch yard Oceanco has released new details and renderings of its 90 metre hybrid superyacht concept Kairos, which was developed in collaboration with design studio Pininfarina .

The update coincides with the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show and comes after the concept was revealed for the first time in March 2021.

Life on board the 90 metre yacht is described as one "without boundaries" by the Dutch yard. “Its exterior has been shaped to evoke a peaceful oasis in which to relax and enjoy time on your own terms,” the builder said.

Described as a “floating, living island”, Kairos has a symmetrical profile and does not aim towards a “forward direction”.

“This elimination of momentum frees those onboard to live fully in the moment, without the sense of urgency to move to a new destination,” Oceanco said.

Elsewhere, key features include a “vast, theatrical piazza” spread across three levels, which is described as breaking “from the canons of conventional yacht design”.

The guest and owner accommodation is all positioned on the lower deck, allowing for a “greater sense of space and flow across the main level’s guest areas”.

The builder also revealed more details about the design’s E-Hybrid propulsion system, which uses batteries as the primary source of energy. Diesel generators meanwhile are used for battery charging and high-speed cruising. The result, Oceanco says, is “no noise, lower vibrations and zero local emissions”.

Featuring technical design and engineering from Lateral Naval Architects , Kairos was designed with Oceanco’s NXT sustainability initiative in mind and is named after the ancient Greek for “time”.

Speaking about the concept, Oceanco chief executive Marcel Onkenhout previously said: “Kairos is a remarkable vision shared by three passionate, forward-thinking partners: Pininfarina, Lateral and Oceanco.

“When owners see the Oceanco NXT endorsement on a yacht’s design, they know they can expect elevated standards of life onboard that are in tune with new perspectives on sustainability and lifestyle.”

Chairman of Pininfarina, Paolo Pininfarina, added: “Our passion as designers is to imagine new concepts of space that are capable of bringing enchantment to every moment of the yachting experience.”

The 90m KAIROS is a concept designed by Oceanco and Italian design studio Pininfarina in 2021.

KAIROS is the result of a first-time collaboration between Oceanco and renowned design studio Pininfarina, with technical design and engineering development provided by Lateral Naval Architects. Like a floating, living island, KAIROS has a symmetrical profile with no ‘forward’ direction to aim towards. The heart of life onboard is the vast, theatrical piazza, to which all entry points of KAIROS lead. The creative layout of KAIROS is enabled via an innovative, all-electric propulsion and energy system architecture. The e-Hybrid system incorporates batteries as the primary means of energy delivery.

In Ancient Greek,  “Kairos”   means  “the right time”  or the  “opportune moment”  to do or say something and is, as such, distinguishable from  “Chronos,”  which refers to clock time. According to the Dutch shipyard, the time to change the future is now, and Kairos, their latest superyacht concept, is the perfect platform to show how it could be done.

Kairos was first presented to the public earlier this year, when Oceanco announced the partnership with the naval division of Pininfarina and Lateral Naval Architects, as part of its NXT initiative on sustainability and innovation. The goal was to create, with assistance from these two partners, the blueprint for the sustainable yachting industry of tomorrow, which would put the environment first without compromise in terms of comfort or luxury.

The full unveiling of Kairos took place at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, in September. Of all the superyacht concepts presented in recent months, it is, without a doubt, among the most visually intriguing and spectacular, but also the most eco-conscious. It would make sense for it to be so, since Lateral is behind one of the  “ greenest”   superyachts today, the stunning sail-assisted Black Pearl, also built by Oceanco.

In no exaggerated terms, Kairos is a vision into a possible future and, at the same time, a bold attempt by the shipyard to break all design rules and write its own. Unlike most superyachts, the 90-meter (295-foot) Kairos has a symmetrical profile, which means it can sail in either direction so that it resembles more a  “floating, living island”  than a vessel. Oceanco calls it an intentional  “elimination of momentum,”  which supposedly frees guests to  “live fully in the moment, without the sense of urgency to move to a new destination.”  Which is to say, when you’re not rushing anywhere, you might as well live in the moment.

That sounds like marketing mumbo-jumbo, but it’s backed up by Kairos itself. Onboard, clear lines and delimitations disappear, so that spaces converge and spill into one another, creating a sense of freedom and communion. You still get pockets of privacy and intimacy, but they too are only vaguely separated from everything else.

Perhaps most impressive in terms of interior design , which Pininfarina signs, is the vertical, three-level piazza smack in the middle of the boat. You get an open platform on the lower deck, right above water level, and glass floors / ceilings that create a continuous space that cuts the interior in half. All entry points lead to this vertical piazza, much like all roads were once said to have led to Rome.

Guest cabins are located on the lower deck. This way, guests get stunning views on the water, while the space up top remains free for communal use. Interiors are vast and luxurious, easily blending with the outdoors to create the most surreal experience at sea.

As part of the NXT initiative, Oceanco imagines Kairos with e-hybrid propulsion: batteries for the main means of energy delivery (propulsion, hotel functions, and maneuvering loads), and diesel generators for battery charging and high-speed cruising. This is an  “ elegant solution ”  that allows extensive operation with zero noise and local emissions, and lower vibrations, as well as maximizing available space for guests and extra amenities.

“Our passion as designers is to imagine new concepts of space that are capable of bringing enchantment to every moment of the experience,”  Paolo Pininfarina said of the project.  “On Kairos, time, space and people connect to be one in the moment. The owner and their guests are at the epicenter of the onboard experience, and the surrounding space adapts to their every desire. A 360-degree approach to design at once connects you to the sea below, to the light above and to the spaces and people beside you. It nourishes your curiosity on an instinctive level and encourages you to explore new experiences and perspectives.” For those of us whose curiosity won’t be nourished directly, whether on an instinctive level or not, it’s a visual treat, at the very least.

Our first ship – and with her this special sailing concept was founded in 2007. With a length of 38 meters and a sail area of 556 m², KAIRÓS is about half the size of her two big sisters CHRONOS and RHEA.

In Greek mythology, KAIRÓS symbolizes the fleeting, even brief and opportune moment – which must be seized at the right moment. What a symbol for our sailing trips!

The KAIRÓS is registered as a passenger ship under the Maltese flag. The professional crew consists of the captain, helmsman/mechanic, bosun, cook and 2 stewardesses.

With its 8 guest cabins / up to 16 guests, the KAIRÓS is even more individual compared to the two larger ships and the atmosphere is even closer to yacht sailing. Even though she is the smallest yacht in the fleet, she offers a generous deck area and a cozy saloon as well as a bar below deck.

Time for a change in the design paradigm

Oceanco, Pininfarina and Lateral have joined forces to recalibrate yacht design with KAIROS.

KAIROS is the result of a first-time collaboration between renowned design studio Pininfarina and large custom yacht builder Oceanco, with technical design and engineering development provided by Lateral Naval Architects. The superyacht has been designed to provide a life onboard that is without boundaries and developed around an E-Hybrid propulsion system that uses batteries as the primary source of energy. Created in harmony with Oceanco’s NXT initiative on sustainability and innovation, KAIROS gives an insight into how technology that is currently available can pave the way for a tangible future of sustainable yachting.
