Great Barrier Reef experiencing one of its worst coral bleaching events

parking yacht reef

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is experiencing one of its worst bleaching events since monitoring began nearly four decades ago, authorities say, with much of the famed reef showing signs of damage as warming ocean temperatures blight reefs worldwide .

Bleaching occurs when heat-stressed coral turn white after expelling symbiotic algae that provide food and color. It’s a result of abnormal ocean temperatures in the past year that scientists worry could represent a major change to Earth systems .

In the Great Barrier Reef marine park, 73 percent of the reefs surveyed have prevalent bleaching — which means that more than 10 percent of the coral cover is bleached, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, which manages the area, said Wednesday. Very high and extreme bleaching was observed across nearly 40 percent of the reef system.

“Climate change is the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef, and coral reefs globally,” said Roger Beeden, the authority’s chief scientist. “The Great Barrier Reef is an incredible ecosystem, and while it has shown its resilience time and time again, this summer has been particularly challenging.”

The dire update on Earth’s largest reef system comes just days after scientists with the U.S.-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the International Coral Reef Initiative said anomalous ocean temperatures are afflicting reefs worldwide.

According to NOAA scientists, the world is experiencing its fourth global bleaching event, and the second in the last decade. At least 53 countries and local regions have experienced mass bleaching across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, they said.

Ocean temperatures began building in the Great Barrier Reef area in late December and continued to rise throughout the Southern Hemisphere summer, causing “the highest levels of thermal stress on record,” the marine park authority said.

The most intense and prolonged heat stress occurred at inshore reefs in the southern part of the marine park, with sea surface temperatures peaking at 2.5 degrees Celsius above average.

This is the Great Barrier Reef’s fifth major bleaching event in nine years. Scientists say it could be the biggest test yet of the 1,400-mile-long world wonder’s ability to recover. For the first time, extreme bleaching — where more than 90 percent of coral cover on a reef is bleached — was observed in all three regions of the marine park.

“Southernmost parts of the reef, which had been largely spared previously, have been hit particularly hard this time, with bleaching affecting many more species, extending to greater depths, and affecting some of the oldest and most resilient corals,” said Simon Bradshaw, a research director with the nonprofit Climate Council. “This is a disaster at our doorstep.”

The giant reef system — which is so large it can easily be spotted from space — has bounced back from disturbances in the past, including underwater heat waves in 2016 and 2017 that triggered coral bleaching events so severe that scientists worried the reef would never look the same again.

Scientists say the recovery from those events was driven by fast-growing Acropora corals, which are more vulnerable to thermal stress and coral bleaching.

“The Great Barrier Reef has seen increases in coral cover to high levels in recent years, indicating it is still a resilient system. But this resilience has its limits,” said David Wachenfeld, research program director at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, a government agency.

Wachenfeld said the level of heat stress, and the results of the aerial surveys, indicate that the latest bleaching event is “one of the most extensive” the reef has experienced since the agency began monitoring the reef nearly 40 years ago.

Research divers had observed coral fatalities in every region of the reef, he said.

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Mike Lynch remains missing after a luxury yacht sank off of Sicily's coast. Lynch, who sold his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, had recently been acquitted of fraud charges related to the sale.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

A rescue boat of the Italian Coast Guard operates in Porticello near Palermo, on Tuesday, a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including U.K. tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Queensland's Reef HQ aquarium rebuild thrown $100 million lifeline

By Chloe Chomicki

Australia's national reef education centre, boasting the country's largest living coral reef exhibit, has been thrown a $100 million lifeline.

The Reef HQ facility in Townsville has been mothballed since a refurbishment project began in 2021.

What's next?

Townsville City Council reallocated $100 million for a new concert hall to fund the reef project.

Australia's largest living coral reef aquarium and national centre of reef education has been thrown a lifeline with the reallocation of $100 million in federal funding.

Townsville's Reef HQ has been mothballed since the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) began a refurbishment in 2021.

That project was initially expected to cost $80 million and was set to include a new facade and roof, among other works.

18 months later, the authority announced grander plans, including a proposal to demolish and rebuild the aquarium tank.

A Senate Estimates hearing in May revealed that the authority never had the extra funding needed to commence the extra work.

Councillors 'annoyed'

Reef HQ became a political football after the delivery of this year's federal budget, in which no extra money was allocated to the project.

At a Special Council Meeting on Friday, nine Townsville City Councillors reluctantly voted to reallocate $100 million in federal funding to get the aquarium rebuilt.

The money was originally allocated to build a new local concert hall.

The councillors who voted in favour of the motion still aired their frustrations towards the federal government for not stumping up extra cash for the aquarium.

"It's disappointing that the federal government are making us decide between Reef HQ and the concert hall," Cr Liam Mooney said.

The Labor-aligned councillor was one of two who opposed the motion and said it contradicted his interests as Chair of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

"We are in dire need of more arts spaces, the Civic Theatre is overbooked," Cr Mooney said.

"Reef HQ will be a shining light for our community. It is just very disappointing for me that it is at the detriment of the concert hall.

"The Federal Government need to just chip in, the fact that we had to choose has annoyed a lot of councillors today."

The decision to reallocate funds was made by council after they requested the federal government release the concert hall's business case study.

The council said the government's business case indicated the concert hall would have been unviable and cost more than $100 million.

Cr Mooney said a separate $700,000 council-funded business case, which investigated the concert hall project, would be released to the public next week.

He said with federal and state elections looming a concert hall funding commitment could come "without any requirement from council".

Townsville a 'political football'

Off the back of the decision, Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson spoke to the media for the first time in weeks, after becoming embroiled in controversy including an active Crime and Corruption Commission investigation.

He voted in favour of reallocating the $100 million.

"Townsville City Council has become a political football during an election era," Cr Thompson said.

"We don't want to play that game we just want to get some investment happening.

"When I look at a federal government that comes out and says they are in surplus to me that means they have money to spend.

"Why wouldn't you spend it in the capital of the north?"

Man speaks in front of microphones.

Mayor Troy Thompson took questions from local media for the first time in weeks.  ( ABC North Queensland )

Earlier this year, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, which is leading the aquarium rebuild, said it was still developing the designs for the facility.

In the meantime, fish, coral and other livestock from Reef HQ continue to be cared for in the Australian Institute of Marine Science's sea simulator in Townsville.

The original aquarium building remains standing, while the Omnimax theatre and office spaces have been demolished.

The rebuild was originally scheduled to open in 2026, but it is now unclear when it will be completed.

Rascal Voyages in Raja Ampat, Indonesia

A brand born to celebrate the inner child in each of us, Rascal Voyages offers the most fun you can have sailing on a boat through Indonesia’s vast archipelago, all while discovering its rich biodiversity and marine life. “We all have an inner rascal inside each of us, and it wants to play and explore,” explains Steve Ebsworth, one of the co-founders of the company.

The Bow Lounge

Ebsworth, a British entrepreneur who moved to southeast Asia 15 years ago, spearheaded a concept “experiential investment projects” together with two friends and business partners, Tom Wheeler and Erik Barreto. From commercial real estate and hospitality to travel and tourism, they see potential to bring purposeful, luxury experiences to the region.

They invested in land banking in remote destinations of the country and quickly realized they were sitting on another opportunity. “Indonesia has 18,000 islands but most of them haven’t been discovered because the infrastructure isn’t there. There aren’t bridges or airports. The only way is by boat.”

Rascal Voyages

DNC Day 1: Biden Delivers Emotional Closing Speech After Hillary Clinton And Harris Hail His ‘Historic Leadership’

‘the acolyte’ reportedly cancelled ahead of season 2, which is no great shock, nyt ‘strands’ hints, spangram and answers for tuesday, august 20th.

Enter: Rascal Voyages.

The company currently operates two luxury Phinisi yachts, an upscale version of a traditional wooden Indonesian sailboat. These yachts, named Rascal and Rebel, embody modern luxury, and a third vessel, Rogue, is under construction. With panoramic roof decks, five spacious cabins each and comfortable lounge areas with coastal furnishings, the yachts are truly luxurious vessels.

“They’re floating villas,” explains Steve. “We removed the mast and sails to free up space, so all our cabins are above deck. The boats are light and airy, not claustrophobic.” Rebel even has a built-in wine cellar. “I was like a kid in a candy shop. I kept pushing to see what was possible,” he says. Other fun features include an outdoor cinema and roof deck golf with biodegradable fish-food golf balls.

“Barefoot luxury” is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but when you spend a week sailing around Indonesia with Rascal Voyages, it feels perfectly fitting.

The Master Cabin

“We really want people to celebrate life and enjoy it to the fullest,” explains Steve. “You don’t get too many surprises when you’re an adult, so we’ve infused the journeys with unexpected experiences along the way. Of course, we also surprise guests with unique itineraries. We take you places you wouldn’t be able to get to on your own — in total privacy, safety and comfort,” he says.

Most of Indonesia’s 18,000 islands have never been explored, but the team brings talent and expertise with them. “We can set up barbecues, beach clubs and picnics on remote beaches,” he says. “Almost anything is possible.”

Sunset canapés

Rascal Voyages offers personalized, private charters across Indonesia, with its most popular itineraries being Komodo National Park, Raja Ampat, the Ring of Fire and the Spice Islands. These charters are ideal for families or a group of friends as they are all-inclusive for up to 10 guests. The company also hosts monthly cabin voyages in these destinations with rates starting at $2,500.

Rascal Voyages caters to more than just divers, and itineraries cover land experiences as well. Komodo National Park is famous for its Komodo dragons, though guests can look forward to treks, sunbathing on a remote pink beach and diving with manta rays and sea turtles. Raja Ampat, which has some of the world's most diverse marine life, is home to dolphins, reef sharks and pygmy seahorses. Rainforest hikes, a pop-up dinner on a secluded beach and bird watching are some of the additional activities that guests can enjoy.

Diving in Raja Ampat

“We’re like a small hotel,” says Steve. “We have a full-time crew that lives on the boat. Luxury isn’t just about the amenities; it’s about the people who create the experience. You can’t reach a certain level of luxury if people aren’t used to working with each other or know where everything is. This boat is their home.”

The crew hails from different corners of Indonesia, save for the voyage managers who hail from Spain, England and France, and everyone lives on board full-time, ensuring a seamless hospitality experience. The voyage managers function like general managers of a hotel, and they’re also dive instructors and marine biologists who provide valuable context and educational presentations during the stay on board.

The Rascal Voyages crew

As a luxury brand with an ambitious vision, the company strives to deliver the most memorable experience to guests thanks to frequent trainings and consistent oversight among its fleet. But for guests on board, the experience is seamless and relaxed. Breakfast is served à la carte, offering a range of international and Indonesian specialties, while lunch and dinner are served family-style, according to a Mediterranean ethos: fresh, local and simple.

“Food is such an important experience, it’s one of our key pillars as a company,” says Steve. “We’ve spent a lot of time developing interesting dishes that infuse Balinese and Asian spices into international recipes. We love local flavors, so we also use recipes from the grandmothers of members of our crew.” A selection of sambals adds unique flavor to dishes and pairs well with international and local foods alike.

Left: Rascal Voyage's Head Chef, Gusti. Right: Grilled lamb.

Each evening starts with sunset canapés and cocktails on the roof deck before gathering around the dining table. One night may feature an Indonesian Rijsttafel with a spread of slow-braised beef, minced chicken sate, sautéed long beans and yellow turmeric rice. Another night may focus on Italian cuisine, with linguini with prawns, an arugula salad and confit duck.

With a friendly, attentive crew and the flexibility to personalize your experience, this is the epitome of slow, luxury living. “You can do morning yoga, then have a cheeseburger and enjoy a bottle of Dom Perignon. Or you can opt for a picnic, eat on the roof of the boat, whatever you want goes,” says Steve. “At Rascal Voyages we want you to feel like you’re at home, with friends.”

Chicago DNC 2024: Protesters march on first day of convention

CHICAGO - The Democratic National Convention in Chicago has prompted large demonstrations and marches as activists seek to have their voices heard.

One of the largest demonstrations today is the Coalition to March on the DNC, which began in Union Park with a rally at noon before the march stepped off around 3 p.m.

Made up of over 200 organizations, the Coalition to March on the DNC includes the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network and the Arab American Action Network.

The coalition is calling for:

  • The U.S. to end aid to Israel
  • Give the community control of police
  • Immigrant Rights and Legalization for All!
  • The defense of LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights
  • Money for Jobs, School, Healthcare, Housing, and Environment, Not for War!
  • The right to unionize and strike

Thousands march on the DNC in Chicago

Thousands of activists and protestors marched Monday hours ahead of the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

There has been a months-long battle in court over the route of the march, which activists claim is too short for the tens of thousands of participants they expect to participate.

The coalition challenged the City of Chicago's 1.1-mile march route, calling for it to be extended farther west and closer to the United Center with a total length of 2.3 miles.

LIST: Chicago DNC 2024: Protests, marches and rallies

Last week, a federal judge sided with the City of Chicago , deciding not to intervene with the previously planned route.

Ahead of the coalition, The United States Palestinian Community Network hosted a demonstration at 9 a.m. Monday in Union Park.

Protesters gathered downtown Sunday to voice their demands on LGBTQ liberation, abortion rights, and Palestinian issues.
