The yacht has received a major refit in 2017 with light and spaciousness as the main requirement from the Owner. In fact, SERENITY offers numerous fantastic areas throughout her decks to unwind on comfortable sofas, chairs or sun loungers, while natural light penetrates into each interior area. The overall atmosphere is inviting and refreshing, while fantastic art pieces have been carefully selected and exhibited around the vessel.

The interior living is capacious and light, featuring ample options for everyone, whether guests wish to relax or be social. On her main deck, adjacent to the aft deck is a full beam formal dining area with a centralized wet bar, space is surrounded by panoramic windows allowing for incredible natural light while providing spectacular views. From here, a hall leads to a guest foyer, followed by a further hall, providing access to the cinema room and 7 guest staterooms.

The Austal yacht’s upper deck boasts a well-appointed full beam salon lounge aft, with plush leather seating, full entertainment systems, wet bar and large windows on either side, as well as sliding glass doors to the upper aft deck. A hall and foyer move forward into additional accommodation, comprising 6 double cabins. Further forward on the upper deck is a complete fitness gym, health centre and beauty room. The bridge deck boasts an exceptional master stateroom and living area. The aft section offers a private lounge, with seating, games table and wet bar. Forward of which there is a generous cabin to port, lounge and office to starboard, as well as a spacious ensuite and lavish walk in wardrobe.

Charter yacht SERENITY has plenty of exterior living, offering something for everyone. The main aft deck is exceptionally comfortable, boasting shade, seating and direct access to the formal dining area. Steps give way to the swim platform and beach club, complete with a great array of water toys, seating and day head. On her upper deck, there is alfresco dining, bar area and chaise loungers. The bridge deck aft is adjacent to the master lounge and features alfresco dining and social seating areas. Her top deck is a social hub and perfect for day or night, this space is equipped with a good size pool surrounded by sun pads, plenty of seating with cocktail tables, chaise loungers and an outdoor lounge. All exterior decks are effortlessly connected by steps.

My Life in Boats: On board 40m Serenity with Tim Smith

The fun of yachting is in making lifelong friends, Serenity’s owner tells Grace Trofa

Where I grew up in North Carolina, my friends were not into boating, and you do what your friends do. My wife, Rosemary, and I had a small boat at our house on Hilton Head Island but nothing like a yacht until I was in my late 30s. I was out with friends in Fort Lauderdale at the Marriott (now Hilton), where one of the guys kept his 70ft (21.3m) Hatteras. I started hanging out on the boat, then chartered it a couple of times, and when he moved up to an 80ft (24m) Hatteras, I chartered that boat too. Then I was hooked. I said, “You know, I kinda like this, maybe I’ll get one.”

So, in 1997 I went to FLIBS with my son. We looked at about 40 boats and found one I liked, a 100ft (30m) Broward. I kept her for three years, built another one, a 118ft Intermarine, sold that and built an 80ft (24m) Hargrave , and that brings us to my current yacht, the 133ft (40m) IAG Serenity . She was built for charter and is a wonderful boat, with six staterooms, four dining areas, an elevator, and a large swim platform. She has more features than any other boat I’ve had so far, but that’s not to say I won’t get one bigger.

I am a civil engineer and real estate developer in Raleigh and have many projects in North Carolina. I was going to buy another house in Fort Lauderdale, but after Covid-19 the prices tripled and I couldn’t find anything I liked, so I thought, “Heck, why don’t I buy a boat instead?”

We plan on keeping Serenity in the Bahamas for the winter season. I have two grandchildren who love the boat, and, yes, I had to have a big water slide and they can’t wait to play with the pigs in the Exumas.

The older I get the more I want to spend time on board enjoying my life. Come summer Serenity will head up to Newport and dock at Forty 1° North. I have been going to Newport since 1998 and have wonderful friends there.

From Newport, we cruise to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island and Mystic. Serenity is my vacation house. We tow a 35ft (10m) Scout; we call her a tender, but she’s really a fishing boat. One of my most memorable experiences was scuba diving with Jacques Cousteau’s son, Jean-Michel. I grew up watching his dad on TV and that’s where I developed my love for scuba.

I haven’t had any negative experiences in yachting. I went into it knowing that it costs a lot of money and crews will be a problem, but once you know that, you learn to deal with it and I’ve been lucky.

Years ago, together with other investors, we set up a business called North American Yachts and Shipbuilding and built two boats in Italy. One of them, the Genesis 153 Argyll (now Focus ), received a lot of press because she was the first to be accessible for wheelchair users; she was a wonderful boat with a Ralph Lauren interior. Her Canadian owner kept her for 18 years before selling her. In the yachting industry, you make lifelong friends, more so than in any other business. When you have a boat, you get to meet other boat owners and it becomes like a fraternity; it’s the best part of owning a yacht.

OWNER'S SUITE — SERENITY

The 122-foot (37.2m) Flagship motor yacht SERENITY is a true testament to her name. Built in 1993, but fully refitted in 2017, SERENITY offers guests a tranquil oasis from which to explore the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska . Eight guests are welcomed aboard for the ultimate luxury adventure — which is exactly what her owners wanted. SERENITY is their first yacht; they purchased her in 2016 and have been delighted by her ever since. Avid charterers, the owners of SERENITY were keen to explore the incredible waters from Seattle to South Alaska; for them, owning their own yacht was the next step .

They spend between six and eight weeks a year on board in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Previously named TALOS, the owners dubbed their yacht SERENITY because “that is how we feel when we’re aboard. She is the perfect yacht for this region,” her owners say. There are lots of enclosed spaces, like the flybridge — which can be alfresco — and the skylounge, that allow you to enjoy the sights regardless of conditions. The region in which the yacht cruises is unlike the traditional tropical yachting hot spots. Which is just how her owners like it. They’re often on board in Alaska. First thing in the morning, the owner will enjoy a run on the yacht’s treadmill, then the adventures begin.

SERENITY’s 29-foot Alaskan-style fishing boat, the SERENE MACHINE, is fully outfitted for exploration. It is perfectly suited to be independent of the main yacht for the day and comfortably accommodates eight people. The SERENE MACHINE has a standup day head and is enclosed in order to protect from the weather. The SERENE MACHINE is perfect to take guests ashore for hikes, get up-close-and-personal with glaciers, cast a line and hope to reel in the big one, and cruise alongside pods of orcas and other incredible wildlife. “We’ve had it only one season,” the owners say, “and it opened up the utility of the yacht in ways you never imagined.”

One of the owners’ favorite aspects of the yacht is the on-deck master. “It’s a huge plus as opposed to being down stairs,” they say, but also mention, “The yacht has great spaces for gathering with everyone on board, but it also has places perfect for some quiet time to read a book or watch scenery go by.”

SERENITY’s owners love Alaska and Puget Sound; this region is their favorite cruising destination. “The beauty and the wildlife are incomparable to anywhere we’ve ever been,” they say. “From the islands and changing nature of the landscape to seeing whales, otters, eagles and bears, to going fishing and crabbing, there’s so much to do — we love enjoying the many things that part of the country has to offer.” Another favorite cruising location for SERENITY’s owners is New England along the Penobscot Bay of Maine and farther north into Canada. They also enjoy The Bahamas, specifically the Exumas — they really love the fishing there. But they maintain that no matter where else they have cruised, Alaska is by far the most unique. “It’s constantly changing and always surprising you,” they maintain, adding, “There’s one spot in Red Bluff Bay where you can nose the yacht to a tidal waterfall then cruise a couple hundred yards and spot a bear fishing in a meadow, then in a few more hundred yards, you drop the shrimp pods to catch dinner.”

SERENITY is the perfect yacht in the perfect location for her owners. They enjoy every moment aboard and they offer her for charter, allowing guests to relish the luxury and incredible location that go hand-in-hand with SERENITY. “She was on the charter market when we bought her,” the owners say. “We expected to be aboard between six and eight weeks a year in Alaska and with her already consistent charter following, it made sense for us to make her available to others in those incredible waters.

The responses from clients who cruise in that area are always the same — they are blown away. Unless you’ve spent a lot of time up there, it’s unlike anything you’ve experienced before. We also get a lot of compliments on our incredible crew, but what guests talk about most are their experiences in the hidden bays in which they anchor, and the incredible opportunities SERENE MACHINE has opened up.”

Charter guests get to enjoy everything from fishing to wildlife spotting — “one group of charter guests were out on SERENE MACHINE when a pod of orcas came by,” the owners say. “One of the whales was swimming on its back under the boat, getting a belly scratch from the keel.” Another favorite memory for guests is cruising past glaciers and picking up a piece of floating ice for cocktails that evening.

The captain and crew of SERENITY further enhance the onboard experience. From the captain with a 20-year Navy career and lots of big-boat experience, to the chef who creates incredible Alaskan feasts from the fresh fish caught by the guests that day, the crew up the ante aboard SERENITY, ensuring an enjoyable, five-star experience for all.

The SERENITY yacht is built with an aluminum superstructure and teak decks with a low draft of 2.2m/7’3″.

Her semi-displacement hull allows her to maintain great seakeeping while reaching amazing speeds. 

Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V 2000 M72) 1,450hp engines, she travels easily at 15 knots and can achieve a top speed of 16 knots, and a range of up to 4,500 nautical miles at 12 knots from her 63,000-liter fuel capacity.

She is equipped with at-anchor stabilizers to provide great comfort all throughout the cruise.

Serenity has a good selection of water toys and accessories to entertain you and your guests whilst on charter. Guests can feel the wind in their hair and jump the waves on one of the three Yamaha WaveRunners. In addition there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Additionally, there are wakeboards so guests can show off at speed. Once aboard you are invited to enter the Main Salon through a large stainless framed glass door by simply pushing a button. The air operated door quickly responds and you are greeted with the custom interior which will leave you breathless. The interior wood has a light maple toned satin finish that is simple yet elegant. From floor to ceiling on the port and starboard sides are a series of wall sconces that were custom crafted exclusively for Serenity. The flooring is covered as far as the eye can see with a beautiful golden Cherry wood. The entire Main Salon is infused with a jade and emerald color delicately displayed on the rugs, chairs and pillows. All of this comes together to set the tone for entire yachts perfectly designed interior.

 As you walk through the Main Salon you can envision hosting a dozen of your friends and family with each person having plenty of space. Entering the Master Stateroom from the foyer you step through a double door entry and are treated to an expansive room. The sheer size of the stateroom is overwhelming enough but the five feet of glass window on either side of the room gives you an open feeling that is simply amazing. The King size bed sits in the middle of the room with large nightstands on either side. The port side of the Master Stateroom has two large dressers connected by a vanity area. To starboard side are two additional dressers split by a perfectly positioned love seat. The Master walk in closet complete with storage unit, shelves, and hanging rods is accessed from the forward portside of the stateroom. Forward from the foyer you are invited to enter the port and starboard VIP staterooms. These staterooms are evenly afforded a large living area complete with queen bed, nightstand, double door cedar lined closets and the same entertainment system found throughout the yacht with access to movies and music via the iPad. The ingenious part of these rooms is in the fact that they can be used as two separate large staterooms or the center wall can be folded back to create one massive second Master Stateroom complete with his and her head. Once back in the Foyer you can gain access to the mid VIP suite offering the flexibility to sleep two each in a single berth or four when the top pulman berths are lowered.
