On the Watch for Whitehawk

A 105’ ketch has entered the bell’s beer bayview mackinac race and will make the great lakes her unlikely home.

Currently,  Whitehawk  is making her way from Newport, R.I., where for many years she has been a familiar sight among other traditionally designed sailing megayachts, to the Great Lakes where such lines are rarely seen. She was recently bought by Peter Thornton, a Key Largo, Fla. resident who has homes in  Bay Harbor and Detroit, Mich. Among other racing accomplishments, he set the Elapsed Time Monohull Record (Cove Island Course) in the 2017 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race with his Volvo 70  Il Mostro , which he has donated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation.

“A yacht like  Whitehawk  has never been on the Great Lakes,” said Thornton, shortly after closing his purchase in mid-May, “and my desire is to show her off in Chicago and Detroit for the Mackinac Races. She is a magnificent machine that should be viewed by as many people as possible.”

Whitehawk  left Newport on her own bottom and last week, after reaching the Erie Canal, was preparing to meet a truck delivering her rig in Oswego, N.Y.  After her masts are stepped, she will head for Lake Ontario and up the Detroit River to Lake Huron where she will stop in Bay Harbor to provision before heading to Chicago for the Chicago Mackinac Race and then back to Port Huron for the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race.

Thornton, in his late seventies, has competed in at least 28 Bayview Mackinac Races, taking many class victories in go-fast boats like the Santa Cruz 70 he owned for many years. He decided after last year, however, that he was ready to “wind down” his racing career with a kinder, gentler experience that  Whitehawk will offer. First things first: his racing crew and family will have to get used to the yacht’s luxurious accommodations as compared to the stripped- down  Il Mostro . Belowdecks features three oversized staterooms and magnificent appointments, including a ten-sided Mandala skylight, a fireplace, and a head with a teak bathtub.

At the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race,  Whitehawk  will sail in Division 1 on the Cove Island course – the longer of the two course options designed for the larger, racier boats entered. “Going from a complete carbon racing machine like  Il Mostro  to a wooden cruising yacht like  Whitehawk  will be quite a transition,” said Thornton, with a grin reflected in his voice. “We’ll be mixed in with boats like the TP52s, and they’ll be running away from us, but that’s okay.”

From plastic to classic

W hat do you do when you no longer have your Volvo 70 Il Mostro to race the Mackinac races on? If you’re Peter Thorton, you buy a 105-foot classic ketch and bring it to the Great Lakes. 

Built in 1978 in Rockland, Maine, the clipper-bowed Bruce King-designed Whitehawk was patterned after the famous 1936 Herreshoff-designed racing yacht Ticonderoga and is one of the largest cold-molded wooden boats. 

Whitehawk made her way from her home port of Newport, Rhode Island, where she was a popular participant in the East Coast classic regattas. 

“A yacht like Whitehawk has never been on the Great Lakes,” said Thornton, a Key Largo, Florida resident who has homes in Bay Harbor and Detroit, Michigan. “My desire is to show her off in Chicago and Detroit for the Mackinac Races. She is a magnificent machine that should be viewed by as many people as possible.”

Thornton set the Bayview Mackinac Race record in 2017 with his Volvo 70 Il Mostro , which he recently donated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation.

Thornton, in his late 70s, has long competed in the Mac races with boats such as his Santa Cruz 70 Holua . He said he decided last year to wind down his racing career with a kinder, gentler experience aboard Whitehawk . The boat will be quite a change from the carbon fiber Il Mostro with her three oversized staterooms and traditional features, including a 10-sided Mandala skylight, a fireplace and a head with a teak bathtub.

We spent the last 2 nights anchored in the idyllic bay formed by Navadra and Vanua Levu islands in the Sacred Islands of the Mamanutha-i-Ra Group, the northernmost of the Mamanucas. Yesterday we snorkeled on the ocean side of the cut between the two islands where we saw pristine plate corals of many colors and lagoon side off the western Vanua Levu beach which revealed interesting coral covered rock canyons. Today we had a great beach walk where we saw a sacred cave, tiny skinks, big spiders, and skittish blue heron-like shore birds. Tomorrow we cross over to Waya, the southernmost and highest island in the Yasawa Islands, a group we visited on our honeymoon in 1990.

Ahoy there!

We had a lovely sail today from Yanuca Island in the Beqa lagoon to Yanuca Island in Cuvu (or Thuvu on some charts) Harbour on the southern Coral Coast of Viti Levu. So we sailed all day and got nowhere. :) John caught a nice mahi mahi about an hour before we arrived - our first fish in a very long time. We watched the tourist bustle at the Shangri-La Resort as we had our sundowners and were thankful we're at peace on our very own boat.

Departed Suva, Fiji Wednesday morning for a lovely day sail to beautiful Yanuca Island in the Beqa lagoon. We had 2 nice days of snorkeling and will head west toward Musket Cove in the morning.

Arrived yesterday afternoon at South Minerva Reef after a slow but pleasant passage from NZ. Getting the underwater camera gear ready for snorkeling. Lots of batteries to charge!

At anchor at Urquharts Bay. Completed engine kill switch replacement this morning. Working on instrument gremlins.

This is White Hawk, C44 no.7 (1977), which was restored by Dave and his new Cherubini Yachts in two extensive sessions over 2003-2009. Lastly in 2012 it returned and Lee removed its original 11,500-lb lead shoe and had it recast as a Scheel keel, matching the profile of newer boats. It was a beautifully-done job-- the boat floats exactly on its lines (note slime line aft), perhaps one of the few C44s that, as sailed, ever did. Most are stern-heavy due to owner-specified add-ons like generators, etc. Hull no.7 was the 1977-1979 show boat at Stamford, Newport and Annapolis. I designed the interior layout of this boat when I was 20. It is one of only two or three C44s with varnished-teak cabinsides, although Chris, the owner, took the advice of a friend in the coatings business and had us apply a porch-furniture finish to the stripped teak. This caused irreparable damage to the 35-year-old teak planks, opening the grain and admitting water; and the boat will never look the same again. 28 Jul 2012

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

2010-11 Lyman-Morse – The project involved almost 6000 hours to complete – the bulk of which was put towards replacing the teak decks.

Historical:

Styled after the famous Herreshoff racing vessel Ticonderoga, the 105’ Whitehawk was designed by renowned Maine yacht designer Bruce King and commissioned in 1978. Her hull is one of the largest ever built using the Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique (WEST SYSTEM), which insures superior strength along with incredible lightness. Whitehawk’s performance capabilities along with her state-of-the-art technology and magnificent appointments make her the ideal vacation vessel for New England summers and Caribbean winters.

The main salon exudes the warmth of a comfortably elegant living room, with separate sitting and dining areas, a cathedral skylight, and a full sized wood-burning fireplace. The ambience is embellished with polished wood architectural features crafted from the highest quality mahogany, teak, and cedar. Beveled mirrors, leaded glass cabinets, and an Italian marble countertop distinguish the unique bar area.

A modern entertainment center, complete with a color television, VCR, and stereo system with CD player, balances the old-world charm with modern-day sophistication.

Whitehawk’s full array of electronics, including two radars, two GPS installations, a Loran, weatherfax, SSB radio and sophisticated sailing computers and plotters, assures safe navigation on every voyage. The large galley, with every convenience for preparing international gourmet cuisine, features an oven/broiler, microwave, large refrigerator and freezer, dishwasher, trash compactor, and ice maker.

Her three air-conditioned double staterooms each have a private bath, with the master stateroom featuring a queen-sized bed and a stunning bathtub carved out of Maine cedar.

With a crew of five to expertly attend a charter group’s every need, Whitehawk comfortably accommodates up to six overnight guests and up to 25 for day sails and social gatherings.

Above deck, more spectacular woodwork is accented with extensive custom-designed fittings. A hand-carved teak wheel and beautiful binnacle with 12″ Constellation compass are from an era gone by. Beneath the stars or under the sun, an oversized teak table gleams in the cockpit, inviting twelve to dine. Yet for all her traditional styling, luxurious accommodations, and modern technological conveniences, Whitehawk is even more. She is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
