The vessel is valued at an eye-watering 200 million dollars and it will be docked in the city until spring 2024, while it undergoes maintenance.

It's name is I Dynasty and it is a 101-metre superyacht that has just anchored at the Port of Malaga and will remain there for the whole winter.

It's the first luxury vessel scheduled to spend the cooler months in the Marqués de Guadiaro basin, the reformed area in the city port for luxury craft and megayachts. The marina was designed and built several years ago to receive large vessels and provide them with the necessary services during the low season, such as high-power electrical connections.

The I Dynasty, with a crew of 30, is scheduled to remain in Malaga throughout the autumn and winter, until the spring of 2024, according to port sources.

Business opportunities

The megayacht will undergo maintenance throughout the winter, for which the concessionaire of the marina, IGY Málaga Marina, is looking for various suppliers in the province which specialise in various technical tasks.

Maintenance required may include sanding, hull painting, welding, electrical, mechanics, carpentry and plumbing. IGY Málaga Marina is creating a database of interested companies, for which they ask anyone interested to contact them directly.

The I Dynasty is a modern megayacht built in 2015 on behalf of Alijan Ibragimov, a billionaire from Kazakhstan. He is the co-founder of the multinational Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) and is involved in diversified natural resources such as mining, processing, energy and logistics. Its owner died in February 2021, reportedly due to Covid-19.

The vessel was built at the Kusch Yachts shipyard in Germany, with interior design by Massari Design. It can accommodate 22 guests in 11 luxury cabins; and 30 crew in another 15 cabins. Among its features, it has a 30-square-metre indoor swimming pool, which also serves as a dock for dinghies and pleasure boats.

The ship is powered by a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric propulsion system, with a top speed of 17 knots, and a cruising speed of 14 knots. It has a range of 6,500 nautical miles (about 12,000 kilometres), making it particularly suitable for journeys between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It is valued at around 200 million dollars, with maintenance costs estimated at 15 to 20 million dollars a year.

Motor Yacht

In 2008, the 59.30 metre superyacht I Dynasty emerged from the Benetti shipyard in Italy. Her immaculate styling by designer Stefano Natucci works seamlessly with the construction quality of Benetti and interior of Studio Massari to create a yacht with true Italian pedigree.

I Dynasty has travelled the Mediterranean exclusively with her original family, and has been kept to the highest standard since. Her Made in Italy style is accentuated by masterclass design features which takes the lifestyle experience on board to a new level.

Her ornate elevator, sliding smoothly through the glass atrium, provides access to all decks and stretches from the lower guest cabins and plateaus at the private gym on the sundeck.

From the top down, the gym allows those on board the choice of exercising in private with air conditioning or opening up the doors to feel the sea breeze; all with an unbeatable view of the ocean.

An authentic Scandinavian sauna transforms a gym into a full wellness centre, as guests can go from the heat to the plunge pool Jacuzzi before retiring to the sunbathing area.

As the evening rolls in, guests can arrive via helicopter or onboard tender to dine under the stars on the sundeck, surrounded by a port on the upper deck aft or inside the luxurious dining suite for privacy. Dining itself is a joy thanks to the fully equipped galley, all at the hands of an onboard expert in culinary craft.

The full-beam Master Stateroom on the main deck forward, is something to behold. While a large dressing room, study and all round panoramic views are as standard, the unique touch of installing a Jacuzzi in her bathroom, and a Turkish steam room in his, immediately elevates this yacht in terms of attention to detail.

The VIP cabin also offers panoramic views on the upper deck, and four double guest cabins on the lower deck provide all the space possible for guests to enjoy their time on board in both style and comfort.

Manslaughter probe announced in Sicily yacht wreck that killed 7

Portrait of Jeanine Santucci

Italian authorities are opening an investigation into whether the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian, which killed seven people including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, was manslaughter.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said Saturday that the investigation is not targeting specific individuals so far, but that it was "plausible" that the crimes of manslaughter or causing a shipwreck through negligence were committed.

The Bayesian went down off the port of Porticello, near Sicily's capital of Palermo, after an unexpected storm early Monday morning. Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife and the owner of the yacht Angela Bacares, were rescued from the water.

A frantic search of the water and the sunken vessel ultimately recovered the bodies of seven people over the next few days: Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; lawyer Christopher Morvillo, an American, and his wife Neda Morvillo; Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer; and Recaldo Thomas, who was the ship's chef. Lynch had recently been acquitted in a fraud trial in the U.S.; Christopher Morvillo was one of his lawyers and Jonathan Bloomer served as a character witness on Lynch's behalf.

Investigation underway to find out how yacht sank

Investigators will pull the sunken ship from the sea bottom, where it is lying on its side about 160 feet down.

"It's in the interests of the owners and managers of the ship to salvage it," Cartosio said, adding that it's not out of the question for the investigation to shift to focus on a person.

The catastrophe has puzzled naval experts, who say the yacht should have withstood a storm of this magnitude. No other boats in the area reported damage from the storm.

Survivors, including the Bayesian's captain James Cutfield, have been questioned by authorities about what happened on the ship, but haven't yet spoken publicly. Cutfield was "extremely cooperative," Raffaele Cammarano, another prosecutor, said Saturday.

A maritime legal expert told USA TODAY the disaster could lead to lawsuits and possible criminal charges against Cutfield. Mitchell Stoller, a maritime expert witness and captain, said it was Cutfield's duty to monitor weather and prepare to maneuver the boat through rough waters instead of staying anchored. Italian authorities have said the Bayesian was likely anchored before the disaster. It's not clear if Cutfield has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf, and messages seeking comment to a Facebook profile appearing to belong to him went unreturned on Friday.

WHY DID THE BAYESIAN SINK? Investigators seek answers to why the luxury superyacht sank in storm

"Indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew, not issues with the boat's design, led to its sinking, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Reuters.

Cammarano said the passengers were likely asleep when the storm hit, which could be why several were unable to escape. The bodies of most were found on the left side of the boat, where they may have gone to try and find pockets of air as it sank, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra of Palermo's Fire Brigade said.

Maker of bayesian yacht blames crew for ‘indescribable, unreasonable errors’ in doomed vessel’s sinking.

The CEO of the company that built the $40 million yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week has blamed the crew for the tragedy — saying they had 16 minutes and could have easily saved the seven who died.

“The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors,” Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Reuters of the Bayesian sinking Monday, killing seven of the 22 onboard.

“The impossible happened on that boat … but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell,” he said.

Mike Lynch wraps his arm around his teen daughter Hannah and both smile for a photo, on a sidewalk.

Blaming the crew for the “incredible mistake” of not being prepared for the storm, he said: “This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance.”

Costantino, whose company includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the 183-foot superyacht in 2008, staunchly defended its construction — saying it had survived far more extreme storms during 22 years of trouble-free navigation.

Instead, he expressed horror that the crew was unable to save the seven who died — including the Bayesian’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

He said the crew had a 16-minute window before the craft sank — plenty of time to get everyone to safety.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes,” he told the Financial Times.

“It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said. It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart,” he said.

Constantino wears a navy suit , smiles and folds his arms while standing next to a model ship on display.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino said.

Had correct procedures been followed, all passengers would have gone back to sleep after one hour, “and the next morning they would have happily resumed their wonderful cruise,” he added.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety.”

“Ask yourself — why were none of the Porticello fishermen out that night? A fisherman checks the conditions and a ship doesn’t? The disturbance was completely readable on all the weather maps. It was impossible not to know,” he said.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

graphic of tragic yacht

Bayesian had 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew — when it capsized and sank during a storm while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily.

Of those on board, 15 people — including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares — were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

Rescue divers located Lynch’s teen daughter Friday, the final missing person, the Italian coast guard said.

The bodies of the other dead passengers, including Lynch and New York attorney Christopher Morvillo, were recovered Wednesday and Thursday from inside the hull of the sunken yacht. Those on board were there to help Lynch celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial.

Rescue boats search the waters off the coast of Porticello near the Sicilian city of Palermo on Aug. 23, 2024.

Meanwhile, Italian authorities launched a manslaughter investigation into what downed the $40 million yacht after it was struck by an intense storm early Monday, local media reported.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese had started making inquiries and was looking at a slew of offenses — including “shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide against an unknown person,” sources told Palermo Today.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the Sicilian yacht tragedy: All you need to know

Yacht trip to celebrate $11b fraud case win turns tragic, five bodies recovered

The Bayesian

In June, a San Francisco jury acquitted British tech tycoon Mike Lynch in a fraud trial related to the multi-billion dollar sale of the software firm Autonomy to Hewlett Packard. Prosecutors had alleged that the 59-year-old entrepreneur inflated Autonomy’s revenue prior to the 2011 sale.

Fresh from the courtroom victory, Lynch is reported to have organised a cruise on the 56-metre luxury yacht, named Bayesian, to celebrate his acquittal. His co-defendant Steve Chamberlain, also acquitted, was killed on Saturday (August 17) when struck by a car in Cambridgeshire, England.

The superyacht with Lynch and his guests capsized around 5am local time on Monday, off the coast of Sicily, during a heavy storm that caused waterspouts, Italian media said. On Wednesday, the Italian coastguard continued its search for the people missing. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among those missing as rescue efforts entered their third day. Four more bodies were recovered on Wednesday, bringing the confirmed death toll to five, with two people still missing.

Here’s what is known so far about the yacht and the tragedy:

How did Mike Lynch’s yacht sink?

According to Italian civil protection officials, a sudden and fierce storm hit the Sicilian coast early Monday, generating a waterspout (a sea tornado) where the British-flagged Bayesian was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo.

How many people were aboard Bayesian?

There were 22 people aboard the yacht, including the crew. Fifteen were rescued, five were found dead, and two are still missing. The 12 guests included British, American, and Canadian nationals, are members of Lynch’s legal team and their families, who were celebrating Lynch’s legal victory.

What did eyewitnesses say?

Karsten Borner, captain of another yacht moored nearby, told Ansa news agency and Giornale di Sicilia newspaper that he saw the Bayesian during the storm, but it was missing when the weather cleared. He saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, according to the Associated Press.

Other witnesses reported to Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the mast to break and the ship to lose balance and sink.

How many people were rescued?

Borner and his crew found a lifeboat with 15 people and took them aboard their yacht. Some were injured.

Who are among the missing?

Lynch and his daughter Hannah, 18, are missing. Top New York City lawyer Christopher Morvillo of global law firm Clifford Chance and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer, have not been found. Neda owns a luxury jewelry line under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri.

Jonathan Bloomer, chair of the insurance group Hiscox and Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy are also missing.

Who’s Mike Lynch?

Mike Lynch , 59, is a British tech investor and entrepreneur. Dubbed “the British Bill Gates,” he co-founded software company Autonomy, which was bought by Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion (£8.6 billion) in 2011. Autonomy helps businesses quickly find information buried in emails and other digital documents. The sale earned Lynch $800 million, making him one of the UK’s wealthiest individuals.

Who’s Jonathan Bloomer?

Jonathan Bloomer , 70, served as Morgan Stanley’s chair for nearly eight years and is also the chair of the insurance group Hiscox. He was on Autonomy’s audit committee and served as a non-executive director on the company’s board in 2010. Bloomer testified during Lynch’s trial in San Francisco.

Who’s Christopher Morvillo?

Christopher Morvillo, a member of a renowned dynasty of New York litigators, is a former US attorney who worked on the 9/11 criminal investigation. The 59-year-old, who works in private practice for Clifford Chance, had been leading Lynch’s defence in one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent fraud cases for over a decade. A Fordham graduate, Morvillo specialises in insider trading and corporate fraud cases.

Who are the survivors of the yacht tragedy?

Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares was among the survivors. Charlotte Golunski and her child also survived the storm’s fury.

“In two seconds, I lost the baby in the sea; then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” said Golunski, who was rescued with her daughter Sofia, according to Ansa. The father, James Emslie, also survived.

Ayla Ronald, a Clifford Chance lawyer, was rescued. The Dutch foreign ministry reported that a Dutch man survived but did not release his identity.

How many bodies have been recovered?

Five bodies have been recovered so far, and that leaves two missing. One body found on the hull of the vessel on Monday (August 19) was identified as onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, according to Reuters. Four more bodies were found on Wednesday (August 21), the BBC reported, but the Italian coastguard has not yet confirmed the age or sex of these bodies.

Where is the wreck?

Rescue authorities said the wreck lies at a depth of 50 metres, about half a mile offshore from the fishing village of Porticello.

What’s hampering the rescue efforts?

Divers told NBC News on Wednesday (August 21) that debris inside the vessel blocked their access to the superyacht, despite managing to force open one of the doors. The depth of the wreck makes the divers’ job difficult, with only 10 minutes available to search the 184-foot yacht before needing to return to the surface.

What is the Bayesian?

The British-flagged Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav, according to the Associated Press. Its single 75-metre aluminium mast is one of the world’s tallest. The name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning, and is used by Autonomy, the AP report said.

Maritime database Equasis noted that Revtom Ltd, based on the Isle of Man, owns the Bayesian, and Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner. Charter sites indicate the yacht was available for rent for up to €195,000 (about $215,000) per week.

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.
