Azimut Magellano 60 Reviewed
- By Phil Draper
- December 7, 2023
I find myself in need of the Hogwarts Sorting Hat to properly categorize Azimut’s Magellano 60. Judging by much of the specification sheet and the accommodations plan, it seems like a mainstream flybridge motoryacht. But it’s not. Strictly speaking, the Magellano 60 is a semidisplacement model, but then again, these designs aren’t normally quite so sprightly. Azimut uses the term “crossover” for its Magellanos. It fits.
Longtime designer Ken Freivokh’s work with Azimut on its newer and bigger Magellanos is masterly. His designs have a timeless quality and an elegance that’s so often missing from models with big diesels and top speeds closer to 30 knots than 20.
The 60 marks a new entry-level size for the Magellano range, with the older 43 and 53 Magellanos gone, and the 8-year-old Magellano 66 remaining as the last of the older series to be drawn by Cor D. Rover. The more recent Magellano 25M (an 82-foot raised pilothouse) and Magellano 30M (a 97-foot trideck) are by Freivokh. They share the same design DNA, with bluff bows and signature wooden battens on the after corners of their superstructures.
Outdoor spaces aboard the Magellano 60 include a foredeck terrace with booth seating and sun pads, a big flybridge beneath an optional hardtop, and a generously sized cockpit with a glazed transom panel and a full top-deck overhang for proper shade. Azimut calls the aft deck an “infinity terrace” with bi-fold doors that open to extend the salon. Furniture in the cockpit includes a table and two facing sofas, which means guests look out at the sea rather than back into the boat. There’s also a two-stool bar to port that shares its countertop with an aft galley when the drop-down window is open.
Inside, the decor is by Azimut’s in-house team, with clear influences from bigger sisterships that have 1950s-inspired schemes by Milanese-based architect Vincenzo De Cotiis. Beyond the galley and up one step are a lounge area amidships, a C-booth sofa to port and a pair of two-seat sofas on either side of a coffee/dining table to starboard. The overall palette is light-stained oak veneers and off-whites—all remarkably soothing. The salon views are superb too, particularly to starboard, where the biggest picture window measures a whopping 8 by 5 feet.
Beneath the raked aft windshield, the lower helm has two Aras bucket seats with the wheel inboard, prioritizing access for the skipper. Immediately to port is a dogleg staircase that leads to the deck below.
This is essentially a three-stateroom, three-head yacht with two showers. There are no other layout options. The owner’s space is amidships with en suite facilities to port. The VIP is forward and shares its portside en suite with the twin-berth stateroom across the companionway. A separate day head is there as well.
Power is also one choice only: a pair of 730 hp i6 MAN diesels. With them spinning at their maximum 2,350 rpm, and with the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer engaged, the Magellano 60 had consistent speeds of around 26 knots at half-load. There’s no obvious hop-up onto plane, but I felt a distinct step change passing through 1,600 rpm. Azimut calls the semiplaning hull geometry “dual mode,” which means it is efficient at displacement as well as faster cruise speeds up to 20 knots. According to my data, the yacht will run all day at that speed, which equates to 2,000 rpm. Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, there’s a working range of around 330 nautical miles. Ultimate range could be near 600 nm at 10 knots.
The Magellano 60 is surprisingly nimble too. The hull happily self-levels once the speeds push up into double digits with a 3-degree, bow-up attitude. The wheel remains light but precise, and it will turn this vessel surprisingly quickly. Although I had a calm day and minimal swell during my time on board, I found that the yacht felt most comfortable with the manual trim tabs fully up. They should come into their own in lumpier beam or quartering seas, when the gyro is probably best kept off.
Those engines, incidentally, are hooked up to V-boxes, and the shafts run out via half-tunnels, which help reduce the draft to a Bahamas-friendly 4 feet, 6 inches at full load. The space for the engines beneath the yacht’s cockpit sole is compact, but the machinery area does not encroach beneath the salon, which makes for a particularly quiet boat. I recorded just 67 decibels at the lower helm at 20 knots, 72 decibels in the owner’s stateroom and 62 decibels in the VIP.
There is an option to specify the lazarette as a single-berth crew cabin. Either way, this space has its own entrance from the port side of the hydraulic swim platform.
Like other newer Magellanos, the 60 that I got aboard had a striking custom paint job, this one a blue-green metallic hull. Italians call it ottanio. Americans call it teal after the duck. A light-gold boot top set it off. The standard specification includes white gelcoat.
The Azimut Magellano 60 premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Once production hits stride, the builder expects to deliver one every two weeks.
Sustainable Diesel
The Azimut Magellano 60 I got aboard ran on hydrogenated vegetable oil instead of diesel. The claims for this sustainable fuel include emissions reductions from 60 to 90 percent, depending on the raw materials used during the refining process. Thanks to a deal with Italian producer Eni Sustainable Mobility, all Azimut owners can request delivery of new boats with HVOlution biofuel in the tanks.
Formidable Flagship
The Azimut Magellano 60 is the start of the builder’s four-model Magellano range. On the other end of the range is the 97-foot, 6-inch Magellano 30 Metri. The 30 Metri is notable for its ability to hold more than 3,800 gallons of fuel while consuming about 15 percent less than traditional hard-chine planing hulls. Twin 1,500 hp MAN diesels give the 30 Metri a reported 16-knot cruise speed and a 20-knot top hop.

Magellano 60: On board Azimut's latest family model
It’s a sultry day in Viareggio, the Tuscan seaside town that’s part beach resort, part shipbuilding hub, and the new Azimut Magellano 60 has just arrived in town. Ahead of its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, we enjoyed a sneak preview of the latest model in a series that comprises boats from 18 to 30 metres and look similarly good across the entire gamut.
The Magellano series kicked off with a Ken Freivokh -designed 22.6-metre cruiser that combined the no nonsense looks of a trawler with the glamour that comes with large glazed surfaces and chic, contemporary interiors. The 18.5-metre Azimut Magellano 60, lying dockside in Azimut’s Viareggio shipyard, has the same straight bow, horizontal hull lines and teak inserts in the fashion plates as her bigger sisters, and the hull colour of choice remains ottanio , a lovely dark teal that looks like deep water.
Freivokh explains the Magellano philosophy: “The 60 is the latest of a very focused line-up that started more than 10 years ago in close cooperation with the Azimut team,” he says. “In line with the most recent models, such as the 25M and 30M, the 60 benefits from a fresh approach aimed at achieving a very purposeful little yacht while further developing the timeless elegance that has been a hallmark of the range. An essential attribute of the full range is the stated objective to offer a design that is suited for living on board, for exploring and for accommodating a family in comfort. In contrast with most planing boats, the Magellano 60 is designed to really live at sea.”
Swedish naval architects Profjord AB and Azimut’s own R&D Department designed an efficient new Dual Mode hull that runs solidly with a comfortable top speed of about 25 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots. As we pull off the dock, the boat’s shaft drive propulsion system and twin 730-horsepower MAN engines let off a familiar grumble that fits well with the Magellano’s trawler aesthetic. But old-fashioned this is not: the boat can run on Eni’s HVOlution biofuel as well as traditional fuel to offer the extra value of greener navigation.
As the name implies, the Magellano series is about exploring and going the distance. Outdoor living areas are a key part of the package, and while the 60 may be the series’ little sister, her extra-large aft deck provides plenty of space for easy living. Longitudinal sofas face each other and overlook the water, while a teak-capped glass bulwark leaves views to the swimming platform free and clear. “We aimed to offer the best possible views of the ocean, and to achieve this we proposed an open transom and the incorporation of a glass cutaway transom,” Freivokh explains.
The galley is set aft in the saloon and becomes part of the aft deck by simply opening the door between the two areas and dropping a sliding window into the bar. This convivial setup, complete with bar stools, makes cooking and serving drinks for friends all part of sharing the fun.
Just one step up from the cockpit and galley, the saloon is like a glasshouse with views straight through and side to side; if the difference in temperature and humidity wasn’t so great, you could almost forget you were indoors. Freivokh points out the design highlights: “Signature details and unique features developed and improved on every successive model in the range, including the very recent Magellano 30M, have successfully migrated to the smaller yet quite unique Magellano 60. The midship seating groups enjoy these panoramic views thanks to the dropped bulwark sides.” The yacht’s teal hull colour is picked up and repeated in the carpeting, and soft, curved furnishings in shades of white are set off by black accents like the piping on a Chanel suit. The same colour scheme is used in the three bright and spacious cabins, a VIP forward, a twin and an owner’s cabin amidships, giving the boat a unified and coherent look.
The indoor helm station, just one step up from the cockpit and galley, is an integral part of the saloon so that everyone aboard can appreciate the boat at work. Raymarine touchscreens and joystick controls make navigation easy and intuitive too. But there is no better spot to helm than on the flybridge, where there is, as Freivokh points out, “great views and also excellent protection from the elements”. The elements are rather welcoming on the day of hot sunshine and flat seas we’re experiencing. These aren’t the most extreme conditions for testing the boat’s seakeeping capabilities, but it’s perfect for seeing what life on board could feel like. And it could feel good.
The helming position fore is flanked by a sunpad whose headrest slides back to become part of the seating around the dining table when needed. Owners can install an outdoor kitchen with a grill and can choose to mount a carbon fibre hardtop, a bimini or even to leave the space entirely open. The same seating with backrests to convert from sunpad to sofa is used on the foredeck, making this another versatile outdoor space that can be used all day, cruising along in the sunshine while watching the world go by or enjoying a drink at anchor.
The up/down beach platform can be used both for swimming and for launching the tender or toys, and who would guess that what looks like a storage unit on the aft deck is actually a companionway that leads to a crew cabin, an essential feature for owners who want to charter or who like to be able to kick back and fully relax after a day on the water.
If Magellano in the Azimut sense means seaworthiness, flexibility of use and efficiency, the Magellano 60 packs all of these into a tidy package. With Freivokh’s timeless exterior lines and a well-planned and elegant interior, this is one little sister that knows how to live up to expectations.

Azimut Magellano 60 Review: Enchanting Voyages on the Horizon
The newcomer to the popular Magellano series is a delightful yacht ideal for cruising lovers, charming with timeless exterior, attractive interior and comfort in navigation
Discover the Azimut Magellano 60: A Newcomer in the Popular Series
Currently the smallest model in Azimut ’s crossover series Magellano, the new Magellano 60 debuted at the Cannes Boat Show . According to the builder, this new model aims for a contemporary style with a distinctly Italian feel, but holding on to the philosophy of the Magellano series – practical solutions, spaciousness and efficiency, with as little impact on the environment as possible and, of course, with readiness to face any and all weather conditions.
Azimut yacht for charter in Croatia
Interesting in many aspects, the new Azimut S8 Myne boasts great performance, large open exterior spaces and an elegantly designed interior. She accommodates up to 9 guests in 4 stylish staterooms and carries onboard 3 crew members.
Recognizable exterior lines of the Magellano series are still there, and the tall hull with a blunt bow unmistakably reveal this model to be another navetta. Large oval windows on the sides of the hull and smaller ones on the bow are also features of the current series present on its latest model.
The tall superstructure is glazed, with the dark glazing interrupted only by six horizontal wooden lines on the aft part of the superstructure, and the white roof. The flybridge has been moved slightly aft, and the highest point of the exterior is the carrier mast for the T-top. The T-top also serves the bow part of the flybridge.
The spacious aft platform can be submerged thanks to a hydraulic system, which allows tender lifting maneuvers, and it’s definitely spacious enough to serve as a beach club. Starboard and aft, there is a dedicated door of the crew cabin, and to the port, the entrance to the main deck interior.
Next to this glazed wall separating the interior and exterior aft part of the main deck lies the dining room, with the table surrounded by sofas. The sofas transform into a large bed with direct view of the sea. The relaxed feel of this space is further enhanced by a small bar with two bar stools right from the entrance and next to the galley.
Located to the left from the door, the semi-circular galley was designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, with wenge wood and black kitchen tops.
Interior Layout and Features: A Closer Look
The salon lies right next to the galley, but one step above, with the floor changing form wood to plush carpeting that continues in the rest of the interior. To the left, there is a large U-shaped sofa, while to the right, there are two small sofas and a small dining table. The interior helm station with two seats is served by a large and wide windshield, and boasts an elegant steering wheel rarely seen on vessels this size.
The predominant use of light tones in the interior in combination with discreet decorative elements in wenge wood lines or designer lighting fixtures give the interior and exterior a timeless feel and guarantee that the Azimut Magellano 60 will not lose its attractiveness for decades to come. To the right of the helm, a semi-circular staircase leads to the corridor connecting all three cabins.

The flybridge is well thought through, comfortable enough for a full day out in the open. Under the area protected by a T-top, whose central part opens for more sun, lies the exterior helm station, with two seats, a semi-circular sofa, a dining table and an element with several refrigerating units, while another bar behind the T-top structure holds an electric kettle, a sink and an ice maker. Interestingly, on the flybridge there is a rarely seen outdoor shower, connected to the T-top.
On the bow, there is a lounge with a spacious sunpad and a sofa hugging a small table, another cozy and private spot ideal for leisure cruising.
We found the cruising side of our experience extremely pleasant, as Azimut Magellano 60 is equipped with a classic shaft, a bow and stern thruster, and a joystick for easy steering. This all makes it easy to handle, and easy to maneuver into small berths and crowded ports, especially from the exterior helm, which enjoys excellent visibility.

In navigation, the new Magellano 60 handled taller waves smoothly, with the Seakeeper 9 smoothing out any subsequent rolling. The steering is prompt and precise, and the model boasts a small turning radius without losing much speed in turns. However, the most interesting technical detail is efficiency, result of the excellent design of the semi-displacement Dual Mode hull.
The Performance of the Azimut Magellano 60 at Sea
The cruising speed is a pleasant 18 to 20 knots at 2000 rpm, with a consumption of 95 liters per hour per engine, while the maximum speed we achieved was 26.5 knots, with a consumption of 150 liters per hour per engine.
With its striking design and excellent performance, the new Azimut Magellano 60 may be the smallest of the series, but it’s also the best indicator of its quality, as well as a safe choice for a large number of owners looking for a comfortable and efficient yacht.

The exteriors bear the iconic signature of the Magellano Series: vertical bow, large windows, clean and elegant lines, with teak louvers as a mark of discreet and immediately architectural charm. On the Magellano 60, the clean lines evolve into more contemporary traits, with edges that define the contours of the surfaces, further enhancing the linearity of Ken Frievokh’s hand.
The bulwarked bow lounge soaks its social seating with sun, tempting guests to fold down the second row of sofas and extend the sunbeds. Suspended on deep cushions, feeling nothing but sky, sea and wind, another level of relaxation is possible.
The cockpit, conceived as a natural extension of the large lounge on the main deck, becomes an Infinity Terrace overlooking the water, offering uncompromising views without barriers thanks to a transparent glass parapet. Magellano 60 answers to the desire for closer contact with nature, for yachtsmen who love long stays on board and taking to sea in search of new frontiers and landscapes.
The interiors of the Magellano 60 express the intentions of the experience – an uninterrupted view of the horizon and a constant dialogue between indoor and outdoor environments – with bright spaces. A half-step separates the galley from the living area. The large windows and the fully opening cockpit doors create a conituum with the marine environment, bringing the pleasures of life at sea on board, into the curated main salon.
The internal dining area sits before a floor-to-ceiling window, which offers breathtaking views of the waves. A convertible dinette is placed next to the full-height window, offering a privileged, intimate view of the sea. It’s easy to imagine yourself here at breakfast, reading a book or having a conversation in the evening.
The warm and welcoming full-beam Owner’s Suite captures the contemporary and suspends it in time, the perfect sanctum for longer stays at sea. Chosen with care and attention to detail, the distinctive palette of materials ranges from a Viennese straw, adorning the furniture, to the softly textured fabric behind the headboard.
Exploring new frontiers, getting to know places of pristine nature and crystal clear waters also means trying to reduce emissions. For this reason, the R&D office of the Azimut|Benetti Group brings to the Magellano 60 the high-efficiency semi-planing Dual Mode hull designed to optimize fuel consumption and emissions, especially at low and medium speeds. Furthermore, the Dual Mode hull guarantees safety by satisfying a variety of needs, starting with seaworthiness: characterized by a marked deadrise at the bow, the hull allows smooth passage over the waves and has all the qualities to handle variable weather and sea conditions at a range of speeds.
Equipped with shaft-line propulsion, the crossover can comfortably cruise at 18 knots and reach up to 26, ensuring performance and comfortable navigation for guests on board.

Calda, accogliente.

How has Italy reduced small boat arrivals by more than 60% in a year and what is the Albania scheme?

Sir Keir Starmer has claimed that Britain can learn lessons from Italy on how to reduce migration , after far-right premier Giorgia Meloni ’s administration saw small boat arrivals fall by more than 60 per cent this year.
Ahead of a visit to Rome , the prime minister hailed Italy’s “dramatic” drop in unregulated migration and expressed interest in Ms Meloni’s proposed asylum processing scheme in Albania, just months after scrapping the Tories’ controversial Rwanda scheme .
Claiming his talks with Ms Meloni marked a return to “British pragmatism”, Sir Keir also praised Italy’s “upstream work” in north Africa, saying: “I have always made the argument that preventing people leaving their country in the first place is far better than trying to deal with those that have arrived.”
Reducing the number of perilous small boat crossings across the Channel is a political priority for Sir Keir’s government, which has announced its intentions to “smash” people-smuggling gangs but has stopped short of opening safe alternative routes for asylum-seekers to travel to Britain to have their claims heard.
The prime minister is now looking to Italy’s example, where the country’s interior ministry reported a 62 per cent fall in migrant arrivals on Italian coasts over the first seven months of 2024. Frontex , the EU’s border force, has calculated a 64 per cent fall in the number of people arriving from North Africa to Italy and Malta.
Hardline immigration policies
Italy has long struck a hard line against migration, with deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini having tightened asylum-seekers’ access to support and public services. He could now face six years in jail for preventing a boat carrying more than 100 people from docking in Italy in 2019.
But Italy’s hardline policies and rhetoric had failed to prevent cross-Mediterranean migration to Italy from continuing to rise dramatically until the fall seen this year, which has been widely attributed to controversial deals struck with the north African nations from which most boats depart.
While Italy has strengthened ties with Libya and is training and equipping the Libyan coastguard, the EU last year pledged €105m to Tunisia to stop migrant crossings from setting off. However, Tunisia later said it had handed back some €60 million of EU budget support amid a row over the funding.
Human rights observers have since warned that EU funds are being used by countries including Tunisia to carry out “collective expulsions” of migrants, including people intercepted at sea en route to Italy, who are then put on buses and dumped in remote or desert areas.
And as part of the crackdown on crossings funded by Europe, the UN’s International Organisation for Migration warned this year that it believed some 15,000 to 20,000 migrants had become stranded in rural areas near the central Tunisian coastline.
Human Rights Watch has also accused Italy and the EU of being “complicit” in crimes carried out against migrants intercepted at sea and returned to Libya, where the the UN has warned they faced “murder, enforced disappearance, torture, enslavement, sexual violence, rape, and other inhumane acts”.
Italy’s supreme court ruled this year that it is unlawful for Italy to return intercepted ships to Libya as it is not a safe country. That ruling followed long-running attempts by Rome to make it more difficult for charities rescuing migrants at sea to operate, including handing them fines for refusing to cooperate with Libyan authorities.
The fall in arrivals in Italy this year has also corresponded with a rise in arrivals via the shorter eastern Mediterranean route to Greece of nearly 57 per cent, according to the EU’s border agency Frontex, which previously fell under an EU deal with Turkey in 2016.
Warning that Italy’s apparent fall in numbers must be put into context, Alberto-Horst Neidhardt noted that this year’s figures are in comparison with a significant surge seen in 2023, while the fact that overall arrivals to the EU have remained roughly static suggests the flows of migration have merely shifted elsewhere.
Mr Neidhart, a migration specialist at the European Policy Centre think-tank, told The Independent that the reduction in arrivals are due to a combination of factors, including the obstruction of Mediterranean rescue operations and more vigorous efforts by Tunisia to prevent departures and return migrants to their countries of origin.
But he warned that the deals such as those with Tunisia and Libya are “short-term patchy remedies that treat the symptoms and not the root causes of irregular migration” which “serve the purpose of saving the face of European governments by keeping their most unacceptable side-effects, including violations of human rights, as far away as possible from European voters’ eyes”.
Mr Neidhart added: “There is also ample evidence that pouring money and resources into unstable countries governed by authoritarian regimes only makes the problem worse in the longer term, promoting elites’ economic interests, fueling corruption, and undermining good governance.”
Italy’s Albania deal
In a further bid to cut migration to Italy, Ms Meloni has struck a deal with Albania to create an offshore asylum processing system, which is yet to come to fruition.
In an echo of the UK’s costly and long-delayed Rwanda scheme, Human Rights Watch has described Italy’s scheme – initially intended to become operational in May – as a “model of mismanagement and a blueprint for abuse” costing hundreds of millions of euros.
But with Sir Keir now expressing interest in replicating the Albania deal, home secretary Yvette Cooper insisted on Monday that it was “very, very different” from the axed Rwanda plan.
Under the Tory scheme, asylum-seekers would have been permanently deported to Rwanda.
By contrast, Tirana will accept asylum seekers on Italy’s behalf while their claims are processed. Failed asylum seekers from safe countries will then be returned to those countries, while those whose asylum claims are successful, expected to be a small minority, will be brought to Italy.
Criticising the Albania scheme, Judith Sunderland of Human Rights Watch, said in June: “Italy’s latest gambit to offshore its responsibilities is all but guaranteed to violate people’s rights.
“Following its abusive deal with Libya, Italy now wants to take people who have effectively reached the country outside of the EU, breaching fundamental tenets of rescue at sea and undermining asylum rights and freedom from arbitrary detention.”
Both Ms Sunderland and Mr Neidhart warned it was unlikely to deter people from making dangerous boat crossings with the latter adding: “In fact, most of the persons processed in Albania will be transferred to Italy, after their procedure is over.
“The deal should be seen for what it is: a costly operation that moves the processing of claims outside the Italian territory, with questionable administrative benefits, and is intended to demonstrate to the Italian electorate that the government is acting on its pledge to crack down against irregular migration.
“It should also be seen a deliberate and more concerted attempt to create a hostile environment for those arriving irregularly in Europe, at a time of growing social and political divisions and tensions.”
