Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 review: This could be the yard’s most popular catamaran yet

Yachting World

  • July 30, 2020

This Elba 45 looks set to be one of the most popular Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans yet. Sam Fortescue travels to Portugal to find out why

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

Such was the hype surrounding this yacht that Fountaine Pajot had sold over 100 Elba 45 hulls before the first one even emerged from the mould. The customer response persuaded the La Rochelle-based catamaran builder to start work on a second set of tooling so that it could complete more than 50 of these yachts each year.

True, at 45ft LOA, it is bang in the sweet spot for cruising cats, but even so it is almost unprecedented to have pre-sold the first two years’ worth of production.

Armed with that knowledge, my expectations were high as I crossed the protected waters of the Río Sado just south of Lisbon in Portugal for the sea trials. And though I certainly wasn’t disappointed by what I saw bobbing at the dock, it takes more than a glance at the Elba 45’s lines to understand the appeal she exerts.

That’s not to say that first impressions aren’t good. As with most modern catamarans, the Elba 45 has towering topsides, especially towards the bow, so has quite a physical presence. Couple this with the extensive glazing of the saloon and the large hull lights, and you have a modern-looking boat. Olivier Racoupeau’s design is aerodynamic in the way that Lagoons, for instance, are not: she has slightly back-swept forward windows and a flowing curve to the coachroof.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-running-shot-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

The new Elba 45 is the next generation of the successful Hélia 44, with faster hulls and greater interior volume

There are a few small details which give away the degree of careful thought that has gone into this new model. There is a useful skirt to the transom wings so that you can step easily aboard from the side, for instance. And on this model, the davits had been replaced with the optional ‘transformer’ bathing platform (€17,200), which can hydraulically raise a tender up to 3.2m long, and 150kg in weight.

The headroom under the hard top is also excellent. It all adds up to about two years of design work across some 150 meetings between Berret-Racoupeau and Fountaine Pajot. “The 45 is the core of the market of Fountaine Pajot, so we were not allowed to make a mistake on something that didn’t work,” Racoupeau tells me phlegmatically. “It’s always such a big challenge to innovate or take a risk.”

Catamaran sailing across the Atlantic: Why multihulls are taking over the ARC

Something big has happened in ocean sailing. It could be the tipping point in the 34-year history of the Atlantic…

Design challenges

Although Racoupeau designed the Elba 45’s hugely successful predecessor, the Hélia 44, he went back to first principles on the new boat, testing a range of new hull shapes with lower drag. “We reduced it [drag] by 10% and that helps the boat sail better at medium and high speed, and more efficiently under engine,” Racoupeau explains. “It may not sound like much but, for us, that’s a big deal.”

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-running-shot-tall-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

Lounging space on the flybridge has been increased threefold in the new model

The design team even managed to make the hull some 15cm longer and 15cm beamier in the process, introducing a small chine in the aft section. “This kind of hull shape will be used on future Fountaine Pajot designs,” Racoupeau confirms.

Another big focus for design work in the new boat has been the flybridge. The Hélia, too, offered a lounging space under the boom next to the helm station, but the Elba 45 has really gone to town.

Seating for four or five and a big sunpad cover more than 10m2 – nearly three times the area offered by the Hélia. On an overcast day in Portugal, you don’t really get it, but it’s not hard to imagine dinner with a view up here, and it means good company for the helmsman mid-ocean.

There’s a console with drinks holder and a convenient little recess for belongings, and still space for solar panels along the trailing edge of the hard top. The trade-off is a slightly higher boom, which in turn raises the centre of effort of the sail, creating more lateral force.

“We have really enlarged the flybridge with more comfortable areas and relaxing areas,” says Racoupeau. “At the same time, I really wanted to keep the classic Fountaine Pajot steering position in the middle, where it’s safe. I didn’t want to put it on the flybridge.”

That helm strikes an effective compromise between an outright flybridge, which adds cachet for some, and a bulkhead steering position peeping over the coachroof. There’s room for two behind the wheel, and a roomy pit ahead of it for someone to grind away at three large Lewmar 50 coachroof-mounted winches.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-upper-helm-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

There is plenty of room to keep the helmsperson company

If you were single-handing, you’d need to engage the autopilot to move round and trim, but all the sheets and control lines apart from the optional gennaker or code sail come back to the helm station, mostly on nice short runs that keep friction down. Even the genoa sheets come back across the coachroof: great for sail handling, but posing a risk with their flailing in the tack.

Elsewhere on deck the Elba 45 boasts an impressive range of outdoor space, with the emphasis on eating in the cockpit and lounging either there, on the flybridge or on the foredeck sunpads. The deep cockpit offers sofas and a sunbed so you can choose where and how to conduct your afternoon siesta. And you can opt for a built-in plancha grill or a barbecue next to the transom seating unit.

For all that, though, the most noticeable fruits of Racoupeau’s redesign are found inside. “Volumes in the saloon and in the cabins are much bigger,” Racoupeau claims. I don’t have a Hélia on hand to make the comparison, but one thing strikes as soon as I enter the saloon: this boat is all about liveability and interior space.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-saloon-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

A new lounging area has been created at the forward end of the saloon, whose wrap-around windows are larger than ever

At 17m2 area, the saloon may not have changed shape much, but it has been reconfigured to make the galley more open and improve stowage. The boat is no Tardis, though, so of course there is a compromise that won’t suit all. “From our personal experience, we saw that we make less and less use of the chart table,” Racoupeau explains. “We go there for information, but not to sit down and work like we did in the past.”

So the chartplotter and instrument panel has been demoted from the front of the saloon to a smaller area around a technical cabinet on the starboard side of the aft door. You can still pull up a chair and consult the read-out – which is now just a step from the bottom of the helm station stairs – but there’s no dedicated space to spread out a chart and get to work with the plotter and dividers.

This is an issue that divides sailors. But if you, like me, rue the loss of the chart table, then at least the coffee table or the flat surfaces behind the sofas would serve.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-galley-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

The galley has shifted to the aft end of the saloon, and the chart table demoted to a shelf by the instruments

Interior size matters

The volume previously dedicated to the chart table has been used to increase the saloon and galley. “We have introduced the concept of the meridienne,” says Racoupeau, “a place where people can have a drink, read something on the iPad, lounge in a chair; always staying in the middle of the area to be able to discuss, share with friends.”

This is a successful ploy, with the deep, comfy L-shaped sofa looking more like something borrowed from the superyacht world than standard yacht seating.

The galley is well equipped, with the sink along the aft bulkhead of the saloon and the hob to port, punctuated by the stairs down to the cabins below. Splitting the galley in this way may not be ideal, but it does create more space, and keeps the connection with the cockpit via the swing-up aft window and fold-away door.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-cockpit-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

The cockpit layout is flexible and convivial thanks to the opening doors and windows that connect it to the saloon

The standard boat offers a large 190lt refrigerator to starboard, and an optional 130lt refrigerator or 90lt freezer by the sink. Freshwater capacity is a reasonable 700lt, and there is an option to include a 60lt/hr 12V watermaker for bluewater cruisers , or a beefier 180lt/hr model on the 220/110V system.

Two basic interior configurations are offered – the maestro (owner’s) version, which dedicates the whole port hull to a double cabin with fold-out TV, dressing table, truly copious clothes storage and a large shower room and heads.

The alternative is the charter-friendly four-cabin, four heads set-up, costing an extra €4,000. There is also room for a single crew berth in the starboard bow and a crew heads to port, although this would chip away at very handy sail locker space.

Racoupeau’s redesign has also opened up the vestibule between the two starboard cabins by removing the wooden ceiling that divided this space from the saloon on the Hélia. “It gives the feeling of more room, with more fresh air in the corridor and in the hull,” he says. “From my point of view this is the worst place in normal catamarans: dark and enclosed.” It sounds like a small detail but, strangely, he’s absolutely right.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-guest-cabin-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

The double cabins all feature semi island beds

The quality of the finish is as you would expect in a series yacht, all in a light grey oak for the furniture, dark oak flooring and a choice of neutral upholstery as standard. It all feels very sophisticated and urban, but arguably lacks a bit of warmth. Luckily, there are plenty of options.

However, the area in which Fountaine Pajot excels is in its hull lay-up, using a sophisticated vacuum infusion process for consistent high quality. They use polyester and vinylester resin over glass, with a final coat of epoxy primer under the antifouling. The spacious transom engine compartments reveal how neat and tidy that finish is.

The yard also insists on some good additional design features, such as the way the stub keels are mounted. They are simply glued into a deep recess moulded into the hull, so there are no keel bolts to rip out in the event of a grounding or of striking a submerged object.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-owners-cabin-credit-Gilles-Martin-Raget

In the ‘maestro’ version, the owner’s suite fills the port hull offering a large amount of storage space

Those keels provide helpful ballast low down to make the boat more stable, but they also slightly improve tracking to windward. During our test, we didn’t see more than 12 knots of true wind, so the boat was only occasionally hard pressed as gusts punched their way down the steep mountainsides. However, she managed a decent 40° off the apparent wind without making excessive leeway, judging by the wake astern.

The Elba 45 is fun to sail in that nippy way catamarans are: you look down and realise that you’re barrelling along at 8 knots without even trying. With the fully battened main and the standard 120% genoa, we managed an easy 7 to 8 knots beating into around 12 knots of true wind.

Powerful mainsail

It is designed with an 18.1m mast with double diamond stays for a good amount of bend and a more powerful mainsail shape. There is also an option to have a lighter carbon fibre mast. It all adds up to a maximum 74m2 fathead main and a 45m2 genoa.

fountaine-pajot-45-catamaran-yacht-review-sailplan

The larger headsail keeps boat speed up in light winds and means that there is less need for a dedicated reaching sail. Unfortunately we weren’t able to test this claim because our boat, rushed down to Portugal for sea trials, didn’t have the correct mast.

Nonetheless, there is the option of a central longeron which protrudes beyond the bow to provide a tack for reaching and downwind sails, at a cost of €5,850. The sail itself costs about the same again and should have made speeds of 10-11 knots feasible in the conditions we had.

I found the wheel a little undersized for the boat, and too sticky – something that could no doubt be rectified. A feature I liked better was the ingenious hook sheave mounted on the car that pulls the mainsail up the mast. Thanks to the sheave, there’s a 2:1 purchase on the halyard already, but the hook pulls the headboard of the square-top main in close to the masthead. It doesn’t engage until the halyard is nearly bowstring taught, keeping the sail loose for a low-friction raise.

Standard propulsion comes from a 40hp Volvo Penta diesel in each hull, coupled with fixed props. You can upgrade to 50hp units for a relatively modest €1,000 per engine, which would make a worthwhile option if you’re expecting to spend a lot of time motoring. And for less than €1,900 ex. VAT you would certainly want to upgrade both with the 18in Volvo folding prop to reap an extra knot or so of boat speed.

A greener option?

Fountaine Pajot realises its boats are large chunks of non-recyclable plastic, but is nevertheless trying to cultivate greater eco awareness. Solar panels and water management systems aim to make the boats less polluting, while the manufacturing process aims to use fewer dangerous chemicals and waste is minimised and recycled.

But the biggest potential green win comes from a tie-up between FP and Volvo Penta, which is using the smaller Lucia 40 as a testbed to co-develop their own electric propulsion system.

This would undoubtedly be a comfortable boat on which to make an ocean crossing – the design work by Racoupeau and Fountaine Pajot has seen to that. But remembering that old adage about the 85% of the time that bluewater cruisers spend at anchor, the Elba 45 excels at offering big volumes for living on the water. You may spend a bit more time on passage compared to a more performance-orientated cat, but comfort ensures you’ll barely notice.

Fountaine Pajot Elba 45

45 person catamaran

The Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2019. This cruising cat is going head to head with one of Lagoon’s most popular models: the Lagoon 46 – the replacement for the 450, which came in both a flybridge (450F) and raised helm version (450S).

So how does the replacement to the Helia 44 from FP stack up?

Liveability

Fountaine Pajot are known for continuous improvement of their range rather than radical redesign, so it should come as no surprise to discover that the new 45 has incorporated many of the popular features of her larger and smaller siblings.

  • Even more space than her predecessor, the Elba 45 boasts some of the biggest living space in her class.
  • The Fly Lounge is clever. You get the lounging space at anchor, a helm that is connected to the aft cockpit and a lower boom than you would see on a flybridge cat.
  • She’s pretty nippy off the wind, a good compromise between comfort and speed
  • The keels are mounted and glued into recesses which is a good safety feature should you ground the boat. They should just shear off with minimal damage to the hulls.
  • The flybridge means a slightly higher boom, which means a higher centre of effort on the mainsail.
  • She’s no stellar performer upwind, but that’s true of most production cruising cats.

This 45 feet yacht, with its inverted bows keeps that signature raised helm station that you’ll see on many of their other boats, plus a fly “lounge” on the bimini that has proven so popular on the Saona 47.  This is a neat trick as the bimini lounge gives you most of the benefits of that great view at anchor without the windage or raised boom of a full flybridge cat like the Lagoon 450. And that means its easier to get to the boom of you encounter any problems under way – with the reefing lines for example.

There is space for four or five and a big sun-pad cover more than 10m2 and you still have space for solar panels. The price you pay is a slightly higher boom, which the centre of effort of the sail. However, the boom is still a lot lower than you would find on a flybridge cat like the Lagoon 46. This is a neat compromise.

There’s still room for two on the helm seat, and plenty of space to work on your 3 large Lewmar 50 winches.

There’s also a foredeck lounging area, although this looks more like an add on and not as much of a feature as, say, a Leopard with its forward cockpit accessible from the saloon.

The cockpit has several sofas, a sunbed, benches and a  long dinner table. And then there’s the hydraulic dive platform aft, which carries the tender when you are under way. This is a cat with plenty of space and the space really “flows” on this boat. We didn’t feel like we were dodging things to get from one zone to the next.

Big windows and hatches bring a lot of natural light and ventilation inside the boat, both in the saloon and in the hulls. The forward window swings up in its entirety connecting you to the forward cockpit and nets. You can’t get much better ventilation than that! (Make sure it is securely closed when you are underway though).

As an option, you can replace the davits with the ‘transformer’ hydraulic bathing platform (around €17,k), which can raise a tender up to 3.2m long, and 150kg in weight.

45 person catamaran

The Owner suite and guest cabins are quiet and comfortable with en-suite shower rooms depending on the version.

Fountaine Pajot boats are nimble for cruising cats if you keep the boats light. In terms of performance, you are looking at something between a Lagoon and a Nautitech, but make sure you don’t overload her. All the sheets and control lines (gennaker or code 0 excepted) come back to the bulkhead helm station.

45 person catamaran

The mast is set forward and integrates well into the saloon down below. This gives you a well balanced sail plan with the overlapping genoa (there is no self tacking jib unlike much of the competition) that remains well powered up even in lighter winds without having to fly a code 0 or gennaker off the bowsprit.

Off the wind in a decent breeze you could be seeing speeds in the low teens in the right conditions.

She won’t be able to compete with a dagger-board cat upwind like an Outremer 51 , for obvious reasons, but that’s the case for any keel cat: that’s your trade off for all of that space. You are likely to hit her sweet spot at around 60 degrees to true. If you need to get upwind faster, you can always stick on the leeward engine at low revs and charge your batteries up.

This boat is a great set up for owners who want a solid performing boat that will be very comfortable at anchor. The design cleverly maximises all the available space, with the stand-out features being that lounge on the bimini at anchor and the size of the cabins down below.

The saloon and cockpit flow together very nicely and the helm station is well connected, with all the lines coming back making her an easy boat to sail short-handed. There’s something to be said for their strategy of continuous improvement on these boats!

Other Options

You might want to look at the South African competition (read our Leopard 50 review for example) and of course the Lagoons are worth a look too in this category. Nautitech will give you more speed but there is a trade off on comfort.

45 to 46-foot Catamaran Models Comparison

This 45 to 46-foot catamaran models comparison covers the features of four premium yacht brands. This size category holds a special place in the multihull market. They are as generous in terms of communal spaces as the 47-48′ catamarans, but usually have only four cabins, which is more than enough to accommodate one or two families.

Significantly more spacious than the 42′, which can also have four cabins, they offer more room for a comfortable sailing experience. With the popularity of this size catamarans, it’s no surprise that the four brands we discuss are competing in this segment. Lagoon 46, Bali 4.6, Excess 14, and Fountaine-Pajot Elba 45 – each offer a unique approach, and share a commitment to quality and performance.

Lagoon catamarans are yachts designed with a primary motto in mind: comfort. The division of Bénéteau that builds them belongs to the brand’s Floating Real Estate sector. Floating Real Estate is an entire program dedicated to comfort on the water aboard a sailboat.

And on this yacht, comfort is everywhere – large cabins, welcoming flybridge, as well as comfortable navigation with self-tacking jib and powerful engines; everything you need to take this floating house of nearly 100m2 (1075 ft2) anywhere.

A roof that extends far to the back, three large modern rectangular hull windows, panoramic vertical windows wrapping the salon, a high-placed boom and a forward trampoline cockpit – all the distinctive elements of a Lagoon can be found on this new Lagoon 46 .

45 person catamaran

The Lagoon 46 is built around its salon that houses the galley kitchen along with a lounge area and chart table. In the aft section lies a separate outdoor cockpit with an eight-person table opposite it; the daybed perfect for taking naps and an outdoor fridge and sink complete the layout.

On each side of the flybridge a staircase leads up to centrally-positioned steering station where the helmsman has a series of winches on each side, with the main ones being electrically powered. The multifunction screen is placed on an inclined navigation console for comfortable viewing. Up top, the helmsman has plenty of company with space for five people on either side of him. In the aft section, there’s a lounging area with cushioned mattresses.

At the front, two trampolines are found on either side of the beam, along with a lounge area with a U-shaped bench perfect for enjoying an evening drink.

Inside, Lagoon has done a great job with this 46. The four cabins are very similar in terms of volume and bed size. Four identical cabins with their own bathrooms is extremely rare and a major advantage of this comfortable boat.

The sail plan of Lagoon catamarans is designed to make maneuvers as easy as possible. The shipyard has chosen to continue using a traditional large mainsail and self-tacking jib. This configuration usually limits the surface area of the jib, but here Lagoon has moved the mast step further back on the roof, providing the jib with a surface area of 46m2 in addition to the 83m2 of the mainsail. With this rigging setup, you can tack without touching any sheets, making sailing with a very small crew (1 person!) more than possible!

45 person catamaran

A skipper who does all the maneuvers alone is a reality. Lagoon fully embraces it on this boat. When you have two couples and four children on board, you need eyes to watch over them and arms for cooking and activities. That’s where the self-tacking jib makes perfect sense.

Spacious and very comfortable, the Lagoon 46 is like an apartment at sea; a boat that leans more towards these characteristics than those of a pure sailing vessel.

45 person catamaran

Bali is the “mainstream” division of the famous Catana cruising catamarans. Balis are comfortable cruising catamarans, direct competitors to Lagoon, which they challenge with some unique features that have contributed to their success.

45 person catamaran

The Bali catamarans design is almost magical. Solid deck over the front, deck over the aft hulls, and you get the largest usable surface area in this category. A rectangle of 100m2 (1075 ft2)!

At the front deck on the Bali 4.6 , there are no trampolines but instead a series of sun loungers and a forward deck cockpit with a table and seating. The front area connects to the salon through a convenient door – and this salon is designed for enjoying outdoor dining moments. It’s the only yacht in this comparison that doesn’t have trampolines, and kids will surely complain if asked to choose their dream catamaran!

45 person catamaran

At the back, Bali equips almost all of its boats with a pivoting rear door, similar to the operation of tilting garage doors. With minimal effort, the entire cockpit/salon partition disappears against the ceiling and the side windows slide open – you feel like you’re outside! Close everything up and you’re protected inside. This trick allows for a very large table and spacious kitchen to be housed in the covered area of the salon. The table is surrounded by sofas on one side and chairs on the other, with another sofa facing it, making the whole space very comfortable and versatile.

45 person catamaran

On the flybridge behind the helm area on the port side, a third dining location is provided by the cockpit lounge that can be transformed into a dining area with a view. This lounge adds another location option for meals – one of the central advantages of this catamaran.

To accommodate these features, the boom was raised high above the flybridge. To access it requires climbing up on the rigid bimini structure of the flybridge; where you are more than 4 meters high.

The rigging chosen is in line with this last characteristic, it’s a self-tacking jib and a lug main sail, battened, making sails easy to maneuver alone. We tacked without touching the sheets – it’s nice! In the version we recommend, the boat has 120 m2 of sail area upwind, an area slightly less than that of the Lagoon 46, but it’s a lighter boat by more than a ton.

The cabins are decorated in soothing and modern beige and brown tones. And just like on the Lagoon 46, the cabins put everyone on an equal footing, with all four having similar beds and storage. The beds are placed crosswise, unlike the Lagoon 46, and the Balis beds are larger than those of their competitor.

The 4 and 5 cabin versions are preferred for charter operations, the latter layout including a small “v-berth” cabin installed in the forward hull.

The Bali 4.6 is one of the most habitable in this 45 to 46-foot catamaran models comparison. Featuring three separate living/dining areas, it is the most versatile. Direct competitor of the Lagoon, the choice between these two very beautiful cruising catamarans in this 45 to 46-foot models comparison is only a question of personal taste!

Fountaine-Pajot Elba 45

The Elba 45 by Fountaine-Pajot is a yacht that, while not truly sporty, still remains oriented towards sailing without sacrificing comfort. On a Fountaine-Pajot, the booms are easily accessible, which is a sign of a boat that prioritizes sailing. The Elba 45 is a comfortable cruising catamaran, with a relatively compact silhouette and the characteristics of a real sailor’s vessel.

45 person catamaran

Fountaine-Pajot boats are very comfortable, but the shipyard has never lost sight of the need to be able to quickly perform reducing and hoisting maneuvers when necessary. For this reason, the boom of the Elba 45 remains easily accessible from the roof. The roof accommodates a large lounge area in front and a flybridge salon at the back. The steering position is offset to starboard.

Offered in a four-cabin version with their own ensuite bathrooms, the Elba 45 sailboats are very comfortable but forward cabins are slightly less spacious than those of the Lagoon 46.

The saloon features an L-shaped kitchen, a configuration that allows for cooking facing forward, and a welcoming lounge equipped with a coffee table. There is no chart table on the Elba 45, but instead a multifunction screen mounted in a cabinet near the entrance of the salon.

45 person catamaran

Relatively lightweight, the Fountaine-Pajot Elba 45 weighs nearly two tons less than the Lagoon 46 on the scale but two tons more than the Excess 14. The optional Tenderlift platform is well worth the additional weight it carries in terms of ease of launching the dinghy.

The Elba 45 catamaran’s rigging features a self-tacking jib and a large mainsail with three reefs (124 m2 at close-hauled). Taking reefs is made easier by the reasonable height of the boom from the roof.

The Elba 45 is equipped with two 50 HP diesel engines (optional 60 HP), and is also available in a Smart Electric version, fitted with electric motors, batteries, and a generator capable of providing it with a wide range of autonomy.

45 person catamaran

Sail-powered, slightly heavy, elegant, and well-designed, the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 makes for a great cruising catamaran intended for those who enjoy sailing without sacrificing comfort. And the hybrid electric version is an exciting option!

The Excess catamarans are designed to be radically different from the Lagoon catamarans, which are also owned by Bénéteau. To differentiate the line from the Lagoon, they created the Excess line of open, relatively lightweight catamarans that prioritize sailing sensations – performance and pleasure. The Excess 14 is the latest addition to this family of catamarans and the most performance oriented in this 45 to 46-foot catamaran models comparison.

45 person catamaran

Excess occupies a unique position in the catamaran market. They are not high-performance machines like the Marsaudon, which are very fast but unforgiving. No, Excess boats are athletes but in the way that amateur athletes are, Sunday sports enthusiasts like you and me who love sports but don’t make it their life. These boats are designed for sailing enthusiasts, passionate individuals who refuse to compromise on both sensations and comfort.

Weighing in at 12 tons, the Excess 14 is the lightest catamaran in this comparison. With its 118 or 134 m2 (pulse rig) of sail area upwind, it has the best sail area to lightweight ratio among the boats in this 45 to 46-foot catamaran comparison. The absence of a flybridge plays a significant role. But wait, when we say “absence,” it’s not entirely true! On the Excess 14, removable mattresses can be installed during stops to enjoy sunbathing – but only while at anchor!

45 person catamaran

The Excess catamarans , including the Excess 14, also feature a steering control system using textile ropes (dyneema), which provides more feedback sensations than hydraulic steering pumps typically used. The helm stations are located at the rear of the boat and an intelligent opening bimini system allows for monitoring the sails or enjoying shooting stars while at anchor.

45 person catamaran

The large cockpit table can seat eight people, and there are two trampolines at the front as well as two sunbathing benches.

The four-cabin version, preferred by charter guests, features separate baths for each cabin. The forward cabins are noticeably less spacious than those of the Lagoon 46 but redeems itself with many additional benefits!

45 person catamaran

The Excess 14 is a captivating sailboat, offering exceptional sailing sensations without ever sacrificing onboard comfort. It is a yacht that lends itself well to voyages, but it is also the only one in this 45 to 46-foot catamaran comparison that does not have a true flybridge.

A lighter version

The Outremer 4X is a performance catamaran that makes no compromises on seaworthiness by staying true to its ocean cruising DNA. Its build is optimized for weight gain. The sail plan and deck layout are studied to handle all weather conditions.

While preserving the same level of comfort as the Outremer 45, the Outremer 4X pushes the boundaries of performance on an ocean cruiser. Blue-water cruising as a family or competing in a regatta, the Outremer 4X can do it all!

45 person catamaran

A cruiser-racer sailplan

Genoa and staysail, the preferred configuration for demanding sailors for their cruising catamaran. To optimize performance in light airs and efficiency in heavy weather, nothing can match the genoa + staysail combination. Of course, you will have to do more maneuvers, manage tacking and set up the removable forestay to set the staysail, but the satisfaction of a well-set sail plan is more than worth the effort!

Structural weight savings

The 4X includes more carbon in the strong structural elements: mast, bulkheads, compression beam, bimini support, etc, but also benefits from additional weight savings: the attention to detail is pushed very far! On the scales, despite having more equipment, the 4X performance catamaran weighs 500 kg less than the 45, and therefore accelerates faster!

The hunt for superfluous weight in the interior

Simple and light-weight fixings, but the same quality of finish as the Outremer 45 blue water catamaran. To lighten the boat, we suggest, for example, replacing the doors and some shelves with fabric structures, closed with zips or even magnets: simple and effective. The storage space is the same, and even if some Corian worktops have been replaced by lighter composite, the same concern for quality can be seen in every detail of this comfortable liveaboard catamaran.

We take pride in our happy customers

Hello Cynthia, We cant thank you enough for all the hard work and efforts you have done to help our dream boat purchase go thru so smoothly. You went above and beyond helping find a Captain, boat slip and many other things you have done! We will always refer you to others looking to purchase or sell a boat.

Cynthia is a great yacht broker. I could list all the things she has done that make here amazing; however, it is not what she does that makes here amazing, it is why she does them. She has a huge heart, patience and an unrelenting drive to help people make their dreams come true. In the search for our boat, thru the purchase Cynthia was always available to answer any questions and negotiated diligently on our behalf. Combine that with her highly skilled understanding of boats as a broker, crew and a captain and you have a broker that anyone would be lucky to have on their team. Where some brokers would stop there, Cynthia continued helping us by finding dockage and ensuring our transition to boat ownership was smooth and painless.

— Matthew G.

I’ve done many complicated, stressful deals in my career and I highly value a good team. I really want you to know the importance of Cynthia’s involvement in making the sale happen. From the first time Cynthia came on my boat, I was impressed how quickly and aggressively she took on the assignment.  She was just “all over it” on day one!  She held everyone to task and made things happen. I cannot think of a time she didn’t follow-up immediately and completely.  As I live in California it was going to be difficult for me to go back-and-forth during the transaction.  Cynthia stepped up and helped find a new dock in Fort Lauderdale, she helped find the appropriate resources and helped in managing the repair work prior to the sale. Cynthia gave me good counsel as to how to approach the “deal” during the whole process.  All along the way she was just invaluable!!!!  Most brokers that I have dealt with were slow and painfully inept in this regard.  She is an excellent communicator and pays attention to the details.  While she represented both the seller and buyer we never once felt she wasn’t fair.  We just didn’t have to worry about it.  On top of everything else, Cynthia was fun to deal with!! Thanks so much!

Dear Cynthia,

I want to take a moment to thank you for all your assistance and efforts on the sale of my sailing vessel Orinoco. Your dedication to me as your client, skillful advertising and promotion for maximum exposure, together with your knowledge and experience in yachts, were a great combination to generate a successful sale. You also assisted me on finding a slip in Fort Lauderdale and, delivering the vessel to the new slip from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale on your personal time. It really was a pleasure to have your professional attention on all aspects of preparing the boat and making it more attractive to potential buyers.  I highly recommend you, not only as a helpful salesperson, but for all your knowledge, expertise and willingness to be there when I needed you. I can assure you that my next purchase of a boat, I will contact you for your awesome services.  Thank you, Johnny Sucre

— The Sucre Family

First of all, I’d like to say thanks to you both for taking the time to speak to me and for your help in facilitating the purchase. I was a little skeptical especially on the deposit but after speaking with you all it put me at ease that if for some reason this Lagoon wasn’t the right one that I’d get my deposit back. I have heard some horror stories. I actually started my search with a competitor but after thoroughly reading this companies reviews I decided to part ways early in the process. I’d like to let you know that Cynthia did an excellent job with me throughout the process. I’m not the easiest person to deal with, especially when I’m out of my element. My guard was up and she had to deal with that and with a seller at the same time. I can’t speak for the seller but she did not push too hard but applied enough to get me moving in the right direction and there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it takes a little push, a little reassuring, and a little reasoning. She overcame my objections with a few items and was all over the punch list in making sure it was done in a timely manner and I truly felt she was looking out for my interests. She is one of the main reasons, along with this particular boat, why I went ahead with the purchase. She did an excellent job and I wanted to make sure you all knew that. You have a

great employee and person in Cynthia and I wish her all the success in the industry! Thank you again!

17 Best Catamarans for Sailing Around the World

Catamarans are quickly outstripping single-hull boats for long-distance journeys. They are more stable and comfortable , and some can travel more than 200 miles in a day. In today’s article, I have put together a complete (well almost) list of some of the best catamarans for circumnavigating the planet; the question is, which one is best for you?

The best catamarans for sailing around the world include:

  • The Fountaine Pajot Ipanema 58

These cats focus on speed, safety, and comfort for longer journeys.

This article will show you the seventeen best catamarans for long journeys, and why they’re the best. You’ll also learn some great tips on what to look for in a Catamaran and how to save money by buying a used catamaran. Let this list be a jumping-off point for your future research!

Pro-tip; here are the actual costs of maintaining a cat and here are considerations on how to circumnavigate .

Table of Contents

The Best Catamarans for Sailing Around the World

A catamaran is a double-hulled boat with a deck or cabin area in between (bluewater cat definition in this article ). The double hull design means that the boat rocks less, sits higher on the water, uses less fuel to sail, and can be sailed in shallower waters than a single-hulled boat without worrying about grounding.

Catamarans come in a variety of sizes and can be sail-powered or motor-powered and range from single-person sailing boats to family-sized yachts. Every catamaran design is different, and the twin-hull shape offers many ways to customize the layout of a ship.

Each boat on this list is a larger catamaran (+40ft, more on size here ), so if you’re going to sail around the world, you want lots of space for provisions and rest.

Of course, there are tons of technical specs for each of these boats, but I’m going to focus on the overall features of each of these catamarans, what makes them stand out, and why they would each be an excellent choice for a transatlantic journey.

Antares 44i

The Antares 44i is an excellent option for sailing around the world and was explicitly designed for long-distance cruising. It performs well in any weather conditions, can be sailed easily by two people, and you’ll be able to sail long distances and live in comfort.

Although it can be easily sailed by a crew of two I believe that a true bluewater cat should be set up for single-handed sailing, more on that in another article .

This catamaran features a stateroom on each hull and a forward cabin with plenty of storage space. The living and entertainment features include a flatscreen tv and a high-end deck speaker system.

With this model, Antares dedicates itself to high-quality boats with optimal rigging and engine configurations.

Atlantic 42

Atlantic is no longer building this catamaran, but there are usually a few pre-owned boats on the market. You can also get it made custom if you love the design, but be prepared to spend more money on a custom boat (custom boat also gets custom problems ;)).

The Atlantic 42 is slightly smaller than some of the other catamarans on this list but is a seaworthy vessel. 42 ft is what most sailors I interview ( in this article ) said was the smallest cat to safely cross big oceans. It is also a decent size to counter the risk of capsizing (more on that here ).

It has a forward cockpit and pilothouse, which gives the owner a better use of space and makes the boat easier to navigate. With single-handed capability, one person can sail it easily and let the rest of the crew relax.

One of the best-praised aspects of the Atlantic 42 is its galley, more extensive than most 42-footers (12.8-meter) can offer.

One of the few 50 footers (15.24 meters) that can be sailed by just one person (many would of course disagree on this).

The Catana 50 is a catamaran worthy of an overseas journey. Its size adds to its stability on the open waters and its ability to sail straight through the choppy ocean and windy conditions.

The Catana is also incredibly spacious on the inside, with substantial cabins and showers. The biggest downside to the Catana 50 is its price, as it’s much more expensive than most of its competitors.

Catana also holds up well against some of the fastest cruising cats out there, here’s a list of the fastest cruisers if you are interested in that.

However, if you can find a gently-used Catana 50, you can rest assured that this boat will last!

The Dolphin 42 is unique because of the use of daggerboards instead of fixed keels. This upgrade means that the boat has some pretty decent upwind performance while at the same time being faster downwind.

Centerboards and daggerboards offer some interesting downsides compared to mini keels. This is an interesting discussion and I suggest you read another one of my articles if you want to deepen your knowledge a little.

These catamarans are some of the lightest on the market. Not many Dolphins were made, so they are relatively hard to find. However, if you want a small, lightweight boat capable of going great distances, the Dolphin 42 is an excellent choice.

Fountaine Pajot Belize 43

The Fountaine Pajot Belize is another well-built cruising yacht. Its core is made of foam instead of balsa, which reduces the risk of structural damage due to a rotten core in case of water intrusion.

The design of Belize offers many options for customizability, with large open spaces and a combined saloon, navigation, and dinette area.

There are two styles of Belize catamarans for sleeping quarters. You can either purchase a boat with an entire primary suite on one hull or one with two cabins in each hull. The first option is great if you are sailing the world alone and not expecting many guests, as it increases the storage capacity.

Understanding what factors to consider when getting a cat can be hard, there are just so many of them (such as the daggerboard discussion above), I have tried to compile some of the most important in this article .

The boat also has wraparound windows to increase the sense of space in the galley.

Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

Fountaine Pajot is one of the best sailboat manufacturers existing today, as their boats are well made and highly versatile. The Lucia 40 is no exception – it’s a smaller boat but has a lot of room for moving around and on-board living.

The living area is remarkably spacious on this catamaran for its size.

The galley and lounge easily accommodate 6+people. The Lucia 40 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to sailing either, as the narrow hulls slice through choppy waters with ease.

Most catamarans today are built to withstand rough weather but that doesn’t matter as much if the crew isn’t up for the task, I firmly believe that the most important thing a boat should consist of, is knowledge. Therefore taking online courses ( two free here ) or reading books ( my favorites here ) is imperative.

Gemini 105M

Gemini’s boats have been on the market for years and are solidly built for cruising. This boat is one of the most popular ever made, I personally would consider something different for offshore cruising, but since it has such a good reputation, I felt I had to add it to the list.

If you want to understand why I am hesitant to take this boat around the world, I recommend you read my article: What are trampolines on a catamaran?

The Gunboat 62 is a great catamaran and set the standards for the rest of the impressive Gunboat lineup. It’s sleek and spacious while being robust and capable of transatlantic journeys. You can easily travel the world in a Gunboat 62 with several people and not feel cramped.

The yacht was made for speed and power and remains one of the fastest catamarans on the market, even rivaling the newer Gunboat models.  GABO

Although the earlier models of the Gunboat 62 weren’t designed for a lot of cargo, you can still find space for everything you need without compromise.

Lagoon catamarans are known for their reliability and ease of use. If you are considering a catamaran for the first time and are unsure about the technicalities of sailing, a Lagoon boat is a great option.

The Lagoon 380 is probably the smallest cruiser on this list, which makes it better suited for solo or couple sailing.

When I go looking to buy something, whether it be a boat, campervan, or whatever, I create a checklist and classify all the things I want either by NEED or NICE to have.

I believe the Lagoon 380 to be sub-optimal for my NEEDS, even though it does check a lot of NICE boxes, there’s a step-by-step article on the NEED and NICE method here .

There are several cabin options available on the Lagoon 380, but if you’re sailing by yourself, you can settle for three cabins and a larger galley and living space. With a smaller cockpit and broader side decks, the Lagoon 380 packs a lot of practicality and ease of sailing into a more compact catamaran.

If you like the idea of a Lagoon boat but want a little more space, the Lagoon 42 is the upgraded version of the Lagoon 380. With all of the same benefits, it comes with more space for cabins or storage, making it one of the best-selling Lagoons of all time.

The Lagoon 42 is also a faster cruiser built for strength. While it’s not the fastest on the market, it works well in choppy waters and windy conditions, making it great for the beginning sailor to go on a more extended trip.

Many people have completed an around-the-world sail with this ship.

Although there is a flybridge version, I would recommend the “open” version due to several factors, some including increased windage and a higher boom. More on flybridges pros and cons here .

For stability, safety, and durability, you can’t beat the Lagoon 42.

The Leopard 45 performs better with less storage weight because of the relatively low bridge deck clearance. If the boat is fully loaded, you could experience some wave pounding. However, the cockpit is open and airy, with devices that block the sun and provide maximum comfort while sailing.

The Leopard 45 is an incredibly beautiful boat,   and has a strong reputation for excellent build quality!

Leopard catamarans are one of my personal favorites, as such I have written an entire article about the brand, so if you want to understand its pros and cons then here is the link . Gabo

Designed in South Africa, it features a high rear arch for extra support and very smoothly connected decks. The galley is large and open, and most Leopards offer a four-cabin plan. If you are traveling with another person, this boat is an excellent option for you!

The Manta 42 is another classic catamaran that you can buy used (at a decent price), as it is an incredibly seaworthy vessel. While still in production, the Manta was one of the most popular catamarans on the market.

It is still in high demand amongst circumnavigators. Buying a used Manta 42 usually means that you inherit some of the previous owner’s boat upgrades!

The Manta 42 also made it to my list of the 9 safest catamarans on the market ( link ).

This blue water cat can be sailed by one or two people, making it ideal for liveaboard couples or long-distance shorthanded sailing. The galley is in the saloon ( instead of in one of the hulls ), making the cabins below more spacious and better equipped.

Overall, the Manta is well equipped for sailing around the world.

Nautitech 44

Nautitech is an excellent brand of the catamaran, with several different designs per boat. The Nautitech 44 has a unique feature, you can have it with two options for steering: twin wheels or a single wheel.

The Nautitech 44 also features a cockpit on the same level as the saloon. The door between the two is more convenient than a hatch and dramatically reduces the risk of water damage during rain pour.

This is also the same boat that aeroyacht president Gregor owns, he has offered some great insights into Nautitech in the book Catamarans (amazon link )

Outremer 45

Outremer is famous for being one of the fastest brands of catamarans on the market. If you need speed, the Outremer 45 might be the perfect choice for you. It has a top speed of 16 knots, which is higher than almost every other catamaran of its class.

While the Outremer 45 is known for speed, it doesn’t compromise on the quality of living.

You can settle into life on this boat with complete peace of mind. Even as a beginning sailor, the steering is simple and easy to use, and the autopilot is top of the line, so you’ll be able to sail across the ocean in an Outremer without issue.

Privilege Serie 5

A French-designed catamaran, the Privilege Serie 5 is one of the most comfortable 50-foot (15 m) yachts available. The unique cabin layout includes the master cabin in the boat’s center instead of in one of the hulls.

The Privilege Serie 5 is also incredibly easy to sail, despite its larger size.

The sails and controls lead to the helm, where the raised deck makes it easy to see all around the deck. If you want to cross the ocean with a full crew then the Privilege Serie 5 might be perfect for you!

Seawind 1000

The Seawind 1000 is the smallest boat on this list, measuring 33 feet (10 meters) long altogether. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s not livable. If you are sailing on your own or with a partner, there is more than enough space to live in the Seawind 1000, which includes the option of a centered cabin or two hull cabins.

Because it’s small, the Seawind 1000 is easy to handle. The mast and sails are all manufactured for extra stability and ease of use.

Overall, the Seawind 1000 is an excellent example of a simple, safe, and seaworthy catamaran.

Note: since this is a small catamaran it will also be more sensitive to heavy weather so trip-planning becomes even more important.

The Voyage 44 is one of the oldest cats on this list, having had its hay-day in the mid-1990s. However, this also means that a used Voyage 44 will be cheaper than a newer boat. If you can find a Voyage with previous responsible owners, you will inherit any upgrades and fixes that they’ve made on top of a very seaworthy boat.

The Voyage 44 has more storage and space than most cruisers of its size and is known for behaving very well in choppy waters.

This catamaran does its job well while providing adequate space for cooking, sleeping, and living aboard.

What To Look For in a Long-Distance Cruising Catamaran

If you are planning to sail around the world, you need to be very careful about which kind of catamaran you decide to use. Many of the things you want in a boat really comes down to personal preference, so be sure you know what design preferences you want before you start shopping!

Size and Payload

The most important thing to consider when buying a catamaran is how much space and cargo you need because the larger the boats are, the bigger the payload it can handle. Decide how long you want the ship to be and how much you’re taking with you.

It’s vital not to overload a catamaran, this will reduce performance and increase risk of unwanted behavior in heavy seas.

Cabin Placement

Most catamarans have options for a “Maestro” cabin placement, where one entire hull is the master suite, and the other cabins are located on the opposite hull.

Cockpit and Protection From The Weather

Is the cockpit on the boat you’re looking at covered or open? This can make a difference on the high seas, especially during rainy weather.

The size of the ship also can affect how many people you need as a crew. If you’re traveling by yourself or with one other person, you don’t want to buy a boat that needs a larger crew.

Buying Used?

If you don’t want to spend the money on a brand new catamaran, I don’t blame you. Several of the ships on this list are out of production and can only be found used. However, for circumnavigation, you do want a boat of high quality to keep you safe and dry until you make it to your destination.

When buying a suitably used catamaran, it’s essential to look at the refit history of the boat more than the year it was made. Catamarans are sturdy, and the general design has been the same for at least the past decade.

If you find a newer, larger, cheaper boat, you should look into its history.

Your best bet to save money while buying a catamaran will be to buy an older, probably smaller boat with an excellent refit history and no serious issues. It will still be an investment, and a sturdy used catamaran will serve you well.

Final Thoughts

No matter which catamaran you decide to buy for your journey, you’ll be able to sail safely and comfortably. Catamarans are great yachts for long-distance sailing, and the ships on this list are the best of the best. These brands are time-tested and ready to accompany you on an adventure around the world!

The Corinthian 45 is the workhorse of our fleet. With inboard or outboard power, the boat can be configured for dive, excursion, ferry or other service

In addition to passenger service, the Corinthian 45 has also proved to be an excellent platform for a variety of other applications. We have outfitted Corinthian 45s as motion picture production platforms, harbor maintenance vessels and more. The boat is small and maneuverable but still caries a payload of 49 passengers or whatever you need to carry to get your specific job done.

The Corinthian 45's size also makes it readily transportable over the road or by ship. That makes it simple to get a boat to your base of operations safely, at a reasonable cost, and in a timely manner.

What Size Catamaran To Sail Around The World

What Size Catamaran To Sail Around The World | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

August 30, 2022

Catamarans are generally longer than monohulls, but their accommodations and handling vary widely between sizes.

The best size catamaran to sail around the world is 45 to 50 feet. The smallest catamaran with space for long-term provisions and a cabin is around 30 feet in length, and a 55 to 60-foot catamaran is the largest that can be accommodated at most marinas.

In this article, we'll go over the different sizes of catamarans and how they handle in the open ocean. Additionally, we'll cover each size category and the best sizes for traveling the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

We sourced the information used in this article from marine design guides and the consensus of experienced catamaran sailors.

Table of contents

‍ What Sizes Are Catamarans?

Catamarans come in all shapes and sizes, but the smallest models don't have the accommodations required to sail around the world. Most catamarans under 30 feet in length don't have a cabin at all, which is a stark difference that they have with monohulls.

Small monohull sailboats often have cabins, as there's plenty of room below on a wide single-hulled sailboat. Monohulls can be as small as 16 to 18 feet and still have a cabin, but catamarans must be much larger to have suitable accommodations.

The smallest catamarans are about 12 to 15 feet long. These are small recreational craft used primarily for racing, and they aren't designed for the open ocean. Larger catamarans in the 20-foot range can (and have) been used on the ocean, but they're usually classified as day boats.

Catamarans become practical for longer excursions once they hit about 30 feet in length. A boat of this size is large enough for a cabin and can usually accommodate between two and four people comfortably. Catamarans commonly stretch beyond 50 feet, which is where they're the most useful and comfortable.

Smallest Catamaran to Sail Around the World

So, what's the smallest catamaran you could use to sail around the world? In theory, any catamaran can sail long distances—but you need one that's large enough for shelter and storing provisions. Generally speaking, 30 feet is the bottom limit for an ocean-crossing catamaran.

Let's take the ME Cat 30 (Maine Cat) as an example. This small and nimble 30-foot catamaran makes use of its limited space and provides comfortable accommodations for a few adults. The ME Cat 30 is a split design that houses the basic accommodations in either hull, with an open seating area between them.

Inside the ME Cat 30, there's barely enough room for all the living spaces. It features a head and a large bed in one hull and a galley and a smaller berth in the other. With that, all the useful cabin space is filled—and this is considered a very good design for the size. As you can see, the best catamarans for sailing across the world are usually much larger.

Typical Ocean Crossing Catamaran Size

Based on what we discussed above, a 30-foot cruising catamaran is really pushing the limits on size. However, it doesn't take a whole lot more length to make a catamaran exponentially more comfortable and suitable for long journeys.

The typical ocean-crossing catamaran is usually about 40 to 45 feet long. With the addition of 10 feet in length, designers can fit an enormous amount of additional accommodations in the hulls.

This is because adding a little extra length allows designers and boatbuilders to widen each hull significantly, which makes room for luxuries like private bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and entirely separate dining and cooking spaces.

Cruising Catamaran Floor Plans

A 40-foot to 50-foot catamaran usually comes with a mirrored floor plan. The traditional catamaran has an identical layout in each hull. That means if one hull has a private berth in the bow and a shower and a toilet in the stern, the other hull will have the exact same layout except opposite.

This is usually because spaces like the galley and sitting area are kept in the center console, where there's much more space to move around. Spaces that are used at night or only occasionally are kept in the narrow hulls, as this has proven to be a more comfortable layout for crews.

Storage is usually kept deep in the hulls as well, as there's extra space to work with when the only other design purpose is for sleeping in bathing. Catamarans in this size range can also have separate hull layouts, but the mirrored design is by far the most common.

Best Catamaran Size for Pacific Ocean Cruising

Catamarans are very versatile craft, but some function better in the Pacific Ocean than others. One of the main considerations when choosing a catamaran for Pacific Travel is that the Pacific usually has greater distances between ports and stopping points.

This is especially true on the US West Coast, where there are only a handful of ports and safe anchorages. The best Pacific cruising catamaran size is between 45 and 50 feet in length, as you're likely to need more space to store provisions for extended cruising.

If you're starting in San Francisco or Seattle, even a 'short' trip along the coastline could mean you'll pass hundreds of miles of steep rocky cliffs and no stopping points insight. When crossing the Pacific, you may travel thousands of miles before you encounter a port or island with any infrastructure at all, let alone stocks of provisions and a full-service marina.

The Pacific is a huge ocean, and the last thing you want to do is run out of food or fuel a thousand miles from your destination. Larger boats store more supplies, and they also give you more breathing room when you're surrounded by empty blue water for months on end.

Best Catamaran Size for Atlantic Ocean Cruising

The Atlantic Ocean is smaller than the Pacific Ocean, and the coastlines of many countries that border it tend to be well-developed. This makes it easier to get away with owning a smaller boat, as you don't need to store as many supplies, and your voyages will be shorter.

Another factor to consider is that not all marinas on the Atlantic can accommodate extremely large catamarans, or it may be prohibitively expensive to dock a 55-foot or 60-foot double-wide vessel. That's why the ideal size for an Atlantic-crossing catamaran is between 40 feet and 50 feet. Today, 45 feet seems to be average.

The boat of this size will fit in at most marinas in developed countries around the Atlantic, and its draft is shallow enough for island hopping and exploring the coral reefs that the Atlantic Islands are known for. Additionally, 40 to 50-foot catamarans are usually just as seaworthy as the larger boats, and they're less expensive to maintain.

Unlike the US West Coast, where ports are few and far between, the Atlantic in the Gulf of Mexico is littered with marinas and safe anchorages. You can travel for weeks along the coastline of the United States and parts of South America and never be further than a hundred miles from a full-service marina.

There are also hundreds of islands, tourist destinations, and service locations that reduce your need for large stores of provisions aboard your catamaran. This gives you a lot more flexibility in choosing a size and a floor plan, as your needs are different than that of a Pacific sailor.

Best Catamaran Size for World Cruising

If you're planning to go on a world tour or a circumnavigation, you're going to need a catamaran that's large enough to fit your crew and your provisions comfortably.

You'll also need a boat that is small enough to be serviced and accommodated in most locations but also seaworthy enough to whether anything you're likely to encounter out of the water.

For most people, the sweet spot seems to be around 45 to 50 feet in length. A 50-foot catamaran is more than large enough to store enough provisions for many months of sailing. It's also roomy enough to house two to six people comfortably for many weeks at a time.

Catamarans between 40 and 50 feet in length are also extremely seaworthy and have been known to make circumnavigation frequently. You're almost guaranteed to find a 50-foot catamaran in almost any remote anchorage in the world where sailors are known to frequent.

Also, almost any marina can accommodate a 50-foot catamaran, and most boatyards can perform at least basic repairs on a boat of this size. Most marinas have fee schedules for boats based on size, and the cutoff for large boats is usually 60 feet. This keeps you in the 'medium' boat category, which can save you thousands.

How to Choose a Catamaran Size

Choosing the right size catamaran can be challenging, but there are a few things you can do to narrow it down. First, examine how you plan to use the vessel. You can travel the oceans in a catamaran between 30 and 40 feet long, so if you have a small crew, you may want to consider a compact model.

Larger catamarans can sleep eight or more people comfortably. This is large enough for most people, though some charter captains may need additional room. A 40 to 45-foot catamaran is usually large enough for a small family, though a 50-footer would be more comfortable, especially if there are kids running around.

Video appears to show Ukrainian strike on key Russian bridge, which Moscow says was likely carried out using US-made HIMARS rockets

  • Ukraine said its forces destroyed bridges over the Seym River in Russia's Kursk region.
  • Footage shared by Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk appears to show the strikes.
  • Russia said one of the strikes was likely carried out by the HIMARS rocket system.

Insider Today

A spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry said that a strike on a key bridge in Russia's Kursk region was likely carried out using a US-made HIMARS rocket system .

"For the first time the Kursk region was struck by Western-made rockets, probably American Himars," Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram.

"As a result of the attack on the bridge over the Seim River in the Glushkovsky district, it was completely destroyed and volunteers providing assistance to the evacuated civilians were killed," she added.

The Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshchuk, shared footage appearing to show the strike in another post on the social network, writing: "Ukrainian pilots are conducting precision strikes against enemy strongholds, equipment concentrations, as well as enemy logistics centers and supply routes."

In a separate post on Sunday, Oleshchuk shared footage that appeared to show a strike on another bridge in the Kursk region.

"Minus one more bridge," he wrote in the text accompanying the video.

Oleshchuk didn't specify the exact location of the bridge, but several reports say it happened over the Seim River in Svannoe.

Bridges have been key for Russian supply lines, which Ukraine has been actively targeting.

In an address to the nation on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the country's forces were focusing on hampering Russian military logistics and reserves.

"We must inflict maximum damage on all Russian positions, and we are doing that," he added.

The strikes on the bridges came as part of a wider cross-border offensive launched by Ukraine last week — a move that surprised both Russia and the West.

While Ukraine continues to push deeper into Russia, it has said that it is not interested in "taking territory."

"The sooner Russia agrees to restore a just peace, the sooner Ukrainian raids on Russian territory will stop. As long as Putin continues the war, he will receive such responses from Ukraine," a spokesperson for Ukraine's foreign affairs ministry said, per the BBC .
