Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
First advertised (1963) as the COLUMBIA CLASS. The COLUMBIA 5.5 has it’s origins with ‘Carina’, a 5.5 METER designed and built by Sigurd Herburn of Norway, winner of the 1958 Scandinavian Gold Cup. It is said that Columbia used this boat as a plug, (with a few modifications) to build it’s own fiberglass version. Though a development class, no fiberglass 5.5 meters had been built at this time. The International 5.5 meter governing body decided that it did not conform to the class rules. The COLUMBIA 5.5 was raced as a one design class on the west coast US for a few years. Later it was modified and received a new model designation COLUMBIA SABRE, a cruising version with a trunk cabin, bunks for four and other amenities. Between 300 and 400 SABRES were built between 1963 and 1969. A similar version was also built by Ericson Yachts as the SCORPION 32 (almost certainly from the same molds).

International 5.5m 50th anniversary
- June 24, 1998
The Int 5.5 Metre class is alive and well and racing on The Solent writes Malcolm McKeag . Nine nations from all around the world are participating in a 5.5 regatta just getting under way off Cowes.
The Royal Thames Yacht Club and Royal Corinthian Yacht Club are together running a 50th Anniversary regatta for the class. In the first week the RTYC are running the Scandinavian Gold Cup and the UK Open Championship. The RCYC are running the worlds in week 2.
The Scandinavian Gold Cup has an interesting format: one boat per nation, first to win three takes the Cup – and after three races if you haven’t won a race, you are out of the competition. Henrik Lunberg of Finland won the first race, the second and third races are today. The UK Open championship, which sweeps up competitors eliminated from the SGC, begins later today.
Fifty Years On The Story of a Thoroughbred
The Five-point-Five was conceived just fifty years ago this year when in 1948 the IYRU gave the go-ahead for a new rating-rule yacht to replace the Six Metre as the Olympic three-person keelboat.
For a long time that great British yacht designer Charles Nicholson had wanted to produce a boat to the Metre-class formula that was as elegant and pure-bred as the Twelves, the Eights and the Sixes, but not so full-bellied and heavy. Nicholson produced the formula – a variation of the International Rule that had been in use since the beginning of the century and which gave us all the beautiful Metre boats – and in 1949 launched and raced the first of the new 5.5 Metres. Appropriately, she was called The Deb – debutante of the new Olympic class. 1998 is thus not only the fiftieth anniversary of the inception of the class, it is also the fiftieth season in which 5.5s have raced.
A year after The Debs debut that great American writer and sailor Alf Loomis saw her for the first time racing at a regatta and in the magazine Yachting wrote of her “she was fresh, she was sleek, she was fast”. Fifty years on it remains a description that any writer might with accuracy use of a 5.5.
The 5.5 is rating-rule yacht, a restricted design as opposed to a one-design class wherein all yachts are the exactly the same. The 5.5 metres from which the class derives its name is the answer the designer has to get when he runs certain crucial dimensions of his new boat through Nicholson’s formula. Within a few other restrictions and regulations the designer can make the boat any shape he wants – as long as the answer to the equation remains 5.5m. It is, in the jargon of yachting, the yacht’s rating. The principle difference between Nicholson’s new formula and the classic International formula was that his rule placed much less benefit on displacement.
Nicholson’s 5.5 was indeed a fresher, sleeker version of the older-style boats, although the difference 50 years ago was not nearly so marked as it is now. The Deb looked very like a slim, pretty Six Metre. Indeed, an idea of the shape of early 5.5s may be had from Cowes local version of the class, the Daring. Still raced keenly and still as sleek and elegant as ever, the Daring is an Arthur Robb one-design based on his successful 5.5s for Stug Perry – Vision, the Silver-medal winner of the 1956 Games, and Vision II – a Fifties state-of-the-art 5.5 frozen in time.
The 5.5 herself has continued to advance. In the Seventies the rule was altered to allow the rudder to be separated from the keel (a modern idea first tried out on model and indeed full-size yachts at the end of the 19th century – nothing is truly new) and this allowed 5.5 designers to continue to develop the design of boats to the rule.
After Australia II’s famous winged-keel win of the Americas Cup in 1983, even cruising boats felt the need to try out some of this underwater exotica, so it is hardly surprising that by now the 5.5s, too, have tested nearly all forms of the craze that that great US 5.5 sailor Buddy Melges once dubbed, in another co

$ 2,450,000
One of the key advancements of the MKII is the increased hull volume, allowing for a touch more luxury and convenience. However, the innovation doesn't stop at aesthetics - it is also presented in the revolutionized engineering behind the model. Embracing the cutting-edge technology, the entire platform now boasts full carbon construction for all full-width bulkheads as standard. To ensure optimal weight distribution and structural integrity, each component undergoes a meticulous vacuum infusion process.
The MKII introduces more versatility into this range with semi customizable layouts to suit most needs. The 3-cabin version features an intentionally open starboard aft cabin. This purposeful design allows for a multitude of possibilities, freeing up the space for owner customizations. The model features a stylish saloon, incorporating a large Corian and bamboo galley with ample storage. There is also a 4-zone induction cooktop paired with electric oven. A dual sink, microwave, storage for appliances and bar seating for 3 rounds off a fully functional kitchen with panoramic views to match. The galley table can also be converted into a full-size queen bed, perfect for overflow guest accommodation, kids’ area or comfortable location for long voyage navigations. There are two large sunroofs on the saloon cabin for additional lighting with great visibility of the mast and sails.
The MKII version now comes standard with the powerful Torqeedo deep blue propulsion system, showcasing their dedication to embracing electric propulsion. The traditional diesel option is offered as an alternative choice. The optional 'sail by wire' package provides an enhanced sailing experience. This package elevates the already exceptional steering system to new heights by incorporating two additional outboard seated tiller steering. positions. The R series embraces the concept of blue water cruising, effortlessly covering vast distances without the need to overwork any of the components. M5 (ex Mirabella V) restyled by Pendennis Shipyard
M5 's stern was remodeled at the pendennis shipyard in falmouth, uk and completed her sail trials successful..
M5 was originally built in 2004 as Mirabella V . Until she is still the largest sloop with over 75 meters (length of the hull) and an almost 90 meters long mast.
Designed and manufactured by Carbo-Link with OYS making the fittings, the 34 new carbon fiber stays, and titanium fittings with built-in dynamic fiber optics have decreased the weight of the rig by 18 tons. The sail trials not only established the M5 ‘s potential speed but tested the new system and balance of the yacht under sail for the first time. During several hours on the water with challenging sea conditions, the remodeled boat performed well, reaching 17.7 knots in 18-23 knots of wind.
The project, due to be completed over the next month, has seen a collaboration between Pendennis and the original designer Ron Holland , to achieve the Owners idea of extending the stern by 3m which has created a new sleeker profile providing an impressive aft deck area. During the refit, Pendennis has completed extensive engineering works and the interiors have been redesigned by UK company Redman Whiteley Dixon .

Driver drank 5-6 beers before crash killing NHL star, brother on bikes: police

Sean M. Higgins is charged with two counts of death by auto following the deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau. Salem County jail
- Matt Gray | For NJ.com
The driver who is believed to have been drunk when he slammed into and killed National Hockey League star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother as they rode bikes in Salem County, New Jersey, on Thursday night told police he drank five or six beers before the crash, according to court documents.
Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew R. Gaudreau, 29, were riding north on County Road 551 in Oldmans Township when a man driving an SUV hit the brothers, according to New Jersey State Police.
Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sean M. Higgins, 43, of Pilesgrove Township, was charged with two counts of second-degree death by auto and told police he consumed “approximately 5-6 beers prior to the accident,” according to the affidavit of probable cause state police filed with the charges.
Click here to read the complaint.
Higgins also admitted consuming alcoholic beverages “prior to and while operating his vehicle” and said his drinking “contributed to his impatience and reckless driving,” state police noted in the affidavit.
Higgins was driving northbound when he went into the southbound lane to pass a sedan, according to the affidavit. While passing the sedan, he saw another SUV in front of him in the southbound lane.
Assuming the SUV was trying to block him from passing, Higgins allegedly went into the northbound lane again to attempt to pass illegally the vehicle on the right side. He then, he hit the two bicyclists on the shoulder, police said.
Investigators later learned the SUV had moved into the southbound lane to make room for the bicyclists who were on a narrow shoulder, according to the affidavit.
After failing a field sobriety test, Higgins was taken into custody at the scene and jailed on the charges.
Higgins made a brief first court appearance via video from jail on Friday afternoon. The defendant was advised of the charges and his rights. He was represented by a public defender, but Higgins indicated he intended to hire a private attorney.
The Salem County Prosecutor’s Office will seek to have Higgins held in jail while he awaits trial, Assistant Prosecutor Brooke Harley confirmed during the hearing. A hearing on that detention motion is scheduled for next Thursday.
The Gaudreau brothers’ parents live on the same road where the crash occurred, and the men were planning to attend their sister’s wedding in New Jersey on Friday. There were multiple vehicles at their parents’ house on Friday afternoon as people arrived to offer their condolences, some bringing flowers. Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More
She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.
She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.
Here is an overview of where she stands.
Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.
She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.
As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
Climate change
Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.
“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”
During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.
In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.
Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.
This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.
She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”
Economic policy
In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.
She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”
As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.
Immigration
One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.
In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”
More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .
Israel and Gaza
Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”
In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”
She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.
Racial justice
Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.
She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.
Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.
Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
