Four Britons are reportedly among six people missing after a luxury superyacht sailboat sunk off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning as a tornado hit the area.

A body has been found after the 56-metre boat, which had 22 people on board, sunk around 5am near Porticello, Palermo , Italian authorities reported.

The vessel has been named by the SuperYacht Times as the Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian.

The daily Il Giornale de Sicilia reported the sailboat was flying a British flag and had been moored in the port at Porticello. It had set sail on Sunday evening.

The outlet reported that firefighter divers have recovered a body in their search for missing yachtsmen near the vessel’s hull.

The vessel had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, representing British, American and Canadian nationalities, the Italian coast guard said.

Fifteen people, including a one-year-old child, were rescued by Italian Coast Guard patrol boats and taken to shore at Porticello. Eight people were taken to hospital.

A helicopter and rescue boats from the coast guard, carabinieri, fire rescue and civil protection service were at the scene searching for the missing and had located the wreck at a depth of 50 metres.

Mum of rescued girl tells of terror

The mother of a one-year-old girl who was rescued from the Bayesian has told of her terror as it sank.

She told of how managed to board a lifeboat with 10 other people as the boat capsized while clutching her baby daughter.

Speaking to Giornale Di Sicilia, she said: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.

"I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

The girl has been taken to a nearby hospital and is in a stable condition.

Bayesian, the yacht which capsized in Italy believed to be carrying British passengers, is 56 metres long, according to ship tracking website VesselFinder.

She was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

Her registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd.

There is little publicly-available online information about the company, which appears to be based on the Isle of Man.

Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily.

Witnesses have told of their shock at seeing the British-flagged Bayesian superyacht sink suddenly on Monday morning.

"I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big. I saw it sink suddenly", Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello told Corierre Della Sera.

Another witness added: “That boat was all lit up. At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful boat where there had been a party.

“A normal holiday spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. The boat was not far from the port. It took very little to raise the anchor and head for the port.

“Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid sinking."

Girl, 1, rescued from yacht wreck

A one-year-old child has been rescued from the downed yacht.

Eight of the 15 people rescued, including a one-year-old child, were transferred to local hospitals. All were in a stable condition, with the young girl reportedly given chest stitches for a slight graze.

The missing people were of British, American and Canadian nationality, the Italian coast guard said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coast guard official in Palermo told Reuters.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days - with floods and landslides causing major damage in the north of the country - after weeks of scorching heat.

Helicopter drafted in to search for missing passengers

The boat capsized at around 5am on Monday morning off the port of Porticello.

Experienced deep-water divers were arriving at the scene to try to enter the hull, said a fire brigade spokesperson.

Those who had not been rescued included one member of the crew and six passengers, the coast guard said.

Local media said a fierce storm, including water spouts, had battered the area overnight but the skies appeared clear by Monday morning.

Yacht had 'mostly Brits on-board' as seven passengers remain missing

The Italian daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported that the yacht had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

Speaking earlier, Filippo Tripoli, the mayor of Bagheria in Sicily, said: "This morning, off the coast of Santa Flavia, a foreign boat sank due to bad weather, 15 people recovered and seven missing.

"Already all the police forces and emergency services are operational and our Red Cross volunteers are present."

Foreign Office 'ready' to help affected Brits

The Bayesian is a luxury sailing yacht.

It can accommodate up to 12 guests across six staterooms, the SuperYacht Times said.

Bayesian was made in 2008 by Italian yacht builder Perini Navi. It features exterior design by her builder, with interior penned by Rémi Tessier and naval architecture by Ron Holland Design.

The SuperYacht Times said: “Together with her streamlined, full aluminium hull and 1,500 square-metres of sail, she can reach speeds of 15.5 knots.

“Under power, she boasts a maximum cruising range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 knots, with power coming from twin Caterpillar C-32 diesel engines.”

One body was found near the wreck, but six others are unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

Those still missing include one member of the crew and six passengers, the coast guard said.

Seven people were initially reportedly missing, including the ship’s cook, four Britons, two Americans and a Canadian.

On board there were mostly British citizens, and also a New Zealander, a Sri Lanken, two Anglo-French and an Irishman, news agency Adnkronos reported.

Southwestern Iowa was reeling Wednesday after a destructive wave of storms, including a tornado, swept across the state the day before, leaving five people dead and at least 35 injured, the authorities said.

The tornado devastated the city of Greenfield , where survey teams estimated it had wind gusts of up to 165 miles an hour, powerful enough to cause major damage to buildings.

“It is just gut-wrenching,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said at a news conference on Wednesday morning in Greenfield, where large swaths of the town were destroyed by the tornado. “It is just horrific; it is hard to describe.”

Here’s what to know:

Four people died and at least 35 others were injured by a tornado in the area of Greenfield, about 50 miles southwest of Des Moines, the Iowa State Patrol said.

There were multiple reports of tornadoes in southwestern Iowa, the National Weather Service said.

Governor Reynolds issued an emergency disaster proclamation in 32 counties. In Adams County, one woman driving a car died after being caught in a storm, according to the county medical examiner’s office.

The Weather Service warned of “ unsettled and changeable weather ” from the West Coast to the Great Plains in the next few days. On Wednesday evening, forecasts were not as worrisome as they had been on Tuesday. A tornado watch was in place in central and northeastern Texas until 8 p.m. Central Time, but the risk was considered much lower. Hail and high winds were possible there and in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas. Some stormy weather could stretch as far north as New York.

The storm devastated Greenfield, a city of about 2,000 people, where video footage showed destroyed homes, mangled cars, and roads covered with debris after a reported tornado swept through the town in the afternoon. The Adair County Health System hospital in the city sustained tornado damage, and patients were transferred to other nearby hospitals, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

The city announced a curfew on Tuesday from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. local time as it assessed the death toll and damage. “This tornado has devastated a good portion of this town and community,” Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol said at a news conference on Tuesday evening.

In Adams County, near Greenfield, television footage showed that three wind turbines had been toppled . One appeared to have caught fire, releasing a large plume of smoke.

Tornado reports in the Midwest

The storms began on Tuesday morning with pea-sized hail, strong winds and heavy rains sweeping through Madison County, southwest of Des Moines. Multiple tornadoes were reported in southwest Iowa, as well as several north of Des Moines. At one point on Tuesday night, more than 13 million people in parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin were under tornado watches.

It was the latest bout of severe weather to strike the Midwest in recent weeks. Earlier storms have killed dozens of people across multiple states and injured many more. There have been more than 150 preliminary reports of tornadoes in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri so far this year. Most of those reports occurred before May and June, typically the peak period for tornadic weather in these states.

Pinellas residents left with major damages after tornado swept through county

CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. - Some Pinellas County residents have repairs and cleanup to deal with after a tornado swept through the area overnight Thursday.

Cleanup crews cut broken trees and tossed debris in the Carlouel neighborhood in Clearwater Beach Thursday.

"We’ve dealt with some flooding from the hurricane. But as far as some wind danger goes and structural damage, it’s crazy how it is right now," said Cory Jursik, who lives in the Carlouel neighborhood.

The National Weather Service said a waterspout moved onto land and became an EF-1 tornado, ripping through Eldorado Avenue. Jursik said he actually saw it because he was already awake.

"I go to the front door, and I look out, and the lightning was lighting up the sky," said Jursik. "I literally watched a tornado, came right through the front of the house. You can kind of see the path all the way up here."

His house was spared, but others did not escape damage after 110 mile an hour winds tore through walls and roofs. The Carlouel Yacht Club also had some damage. 

"That was one of the first places I walked last night. Obviously, [there’s] a lot of debris, trees. The roof’s fine. There were some windows that had been blown out. The furniture’s kind of all over the place," said Jursik.

First responders in Clearwater say the tornado damaged at least two homes on Eldorado Avenue on Clearwater Beach early Thursday morning. They say no injuries have been reported, but one woman was evacuated after the second story of her home began to cave in.

Pinellas County officials said the tornado then swept through the Dunedin Causeway and up toward East Lake. The NWS estimated that the tornado was an EF-1 when it came ashore and then eventually became an EF-2. 

A Baywood Shores neighbor was shocked by the damage. 

"Our neighbor, his car got picked up and turned, flipped over and bent the frame and cracked the windshield. He said it was 10 seconds, 10 of the scariest seconds of his life," said John Beebe, a Baywood Shores resident in Dunedin.

Storefronts in the Causeway Plaza boarded up damaged windows, leaving piles of debris in the parking lot. Utility companies also worked to restore power to thousands of customers. 

After seeing the aftermath, neighbors are thankful alerts warned them what was coming.

"Turn them all on, leave them all on. That woke me up. Had I not heard that I wouldn’t have known what was going on," said Beebe.

Pinellas County officials said residents and businesses with damage should go to disaster.pinellas.gov to fill out a damage assessment report and talk to their insurance companies.

4 dead, dozens injured in tornado that devastated Iowa town

Central Iowa was reeling Wednesday morning after what police described as a "devastating" tornado killed four people and laid waste to rural communities.

Iowa Department of Public Safety said four people died and 35 more were injured as a result of the tornado that tore through the town of Greenfield, a community of about 2,000 people 40 miles southwest of Des Moines, on Tuesday.

The names of the dead have not been publicly released, Iowa DPS said. The agency also said that the number of injured is likely higher, and that these numbers only reflect those treated at designated care sites.

Another person was killed in a weather-related car crash in nearby Adams County on Tuesday, police confirmed. The victim was named as Monica Zamarron, 46.

A state of emergency was declared in 17 counties on Wednesday night by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, after the declaration was made for 15 counties earlier Wednesday.

There were 18 tornado warnings across Iowa on Tuesday, as well as one each in Wisconsin and Minnesota, adding to an already exceptionally busy tornado season.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla said at a news conference that at least 12 people were treated in hospitals — although the town's Adair County Memorial Hospital was also damaged, forcing first responders to take victims to facilities elsewhere.

Reynolds declined to release the number of people injured or killed, telling reporters at a Wednesday news conference that "it’s still a search and rescue and we don’t want to give out any misinformation."

Joan Newell, 77, of Greenfield said the tornado sounded like a "train."

"So I knew I needed to get to my basement," she said.

Newell said she was trapped in her house for about 45 minutes before she was rescued. At one point, she could hear people outside but no one knew she was stuck.

"They didn’t think I was down there and I kept hollering, ‘I am here!’ But no one could hear me," she said.

Her Apple watch eventually alerted 911 that she had fallen and was trapped.

Newell has lived in the area for decades and has experienced a tornado before. But this one was "10 times worse," she said.

Maggie Masker's home was ripped from its foundation. In the basement where her family would have sheltered in place had they been home during the tornado lay a pile of bricks.

Luckily, Masker was at work, her husband had gone to help at the fire department and her 2-year-old daughter was in daycare.

“Crazy to think about," Masker said. "You just think like that’s where your safe spot is, and it’s not safe anymore. Never was.”

The risk of severe weather continues into Thursday for some 20 million people, from Memphis to New England.

Aerial footage from Greenfield, shot late Tuesday, showed entire streets that were in the path of the tornado turned to wreckage, with piles of debris among broken trees and demolished cars.

A man in nearby Red Oak, Montgomery County, captured footage of an enormous funnel cloud moving through the area as sirens wailed and intense rain fell.

The Montgomery County Emergency Management said in a statement that multiple confirmed tornadoes damaged at least 28 homes, with the damage ranging from "affected to destroyed."

Wind turbines were left in ruin near Prescott, Iowa. And the wind was strong enough near the town of Nevada, Iowa, to topple a semitruck that had stopped on a highway because of the extreme conditions. There has been no report of related casualties.

The situation was so severe in Iowa that the weather service said it was deploying three teams from its Des Moines office to survey the tornado damage, with the results expected Wednesday night.

Elsewhere, in Colorado large hailstones stripped the cladding from buildings and shattered car windows — NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver reported that the hail was at times the size of a baseball.

In Omaha, Nebraska, cars were swept away by raging floodwaters caused by between 4 and 8 inches of rain, leaving some stranded.

NBC affiliate WOWT of Omaha spoke to Mike Troy, a local man and school football coach, whose home was on a newly created island. The water was not considered deep enough to justify a rescue, he said.

Nearly 155,000 energy customers were without power in Texas as of 10:20 p.m. ET after a torrid few days of severe weather, according to the energy connection tracker PowerOutage.us , while 15,900 were also without power in Wisconsin.
