Thursday, January 21st, 2021

Written by: Marine Industry News

mylor yacht harbour marine team

Volvo Penta has appointed Mylor Yacht Harbour as an authorised UK service and sales dealership – acknowledging Mylor’s marine team as a ‘go-to’ for installation, servicing, warranties and sales for the many thousands of vessels containing its products.

The marine team met the criteria required by Volvo Penta to both supply and service technologies used in the leisure boating and commercial markets, placing the Cornish yacht harbour within a global network of dealers and distributors.

“We have worked extremely hard to ensure we meet Volvo Penta’s exacting standards and we’re looking forward to being able to provide this additional service to our customers in 2021,” says Nathan Percival, Mylor Yacht Harbour’s engineering manager.

“Our experienced team of marine engineers has successfully undergone all the bespoke training required by this world-class organisation and are ready and able to provide sales, service and support for Volvo Penta engines throughout Cornwall and the wider South West.”

“We welcome all the Team at Mylor Yacht Harbour Ltd to the Volvo Penta family,” says Graham Pretty, the firm’s dealer business manager for UK/Ireland.

“With Mylor’s impressive facilities and extensive skill sets, they will be able to provide assistance and advice to all our customers and be sure to enhance their ‘on water’ experience.

“Our marine segment has remained very strong throughout recent times and continues to grow with Volvo Penta leading the way in innovation and new technology. By partnering with Mylor Yacht Harbour Ltd we can further support our valued Volvo Penta customers in the South West.”

Boasting some of the finest sheltered waters in the UK, the Carrick Roads offers a great base for sailing , boat charter and other water sports such as kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing and much more. There are many yacht racing events, both local and national, that take place throughout the season in the area.

The entire area is protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from the mouth which has St Anthony Lighthouse (aka Fraggle Rock) to one side and Pendennis Castle to the other, deep into the tree lined creeks to Truro. It is home to many wading birds, seals and otters, not to mention all the basking sharks and dolphins that come into the Roads to feed.

New MD for Mylor Yacht Harbour

  • Katy Stickland

Neil Salter has been named as the new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall. He will replace Robert Graffy who has stepped down.

The new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour Neil Salter

Neil Salter

Mylor Yacht Harbour has announced that its new managing director will be Neil Salter.

He will replace Roger Graffy, who has stepped down after 20 years in the role.

Salter has spent the last 18 years working with Marina Development Limited (MDL), managing some of the largest marinas and their related operations in the UK.

He has also set up marinas in Spain and Italy and has consulted widely within the industry.

Devon-born Salter has now moved to Cornwall from Southampton to head up the state-of-the-art marine business.

Roger Graffy and Neil Slater of Mylor Yacht Harbour

Neil Salter (right) will replace Roger Graffy as managing director

Mylor Yacht Harbour has been built up by Graffy after he took the helm two decades ago.

Spotting its huge potential, he and his co-owner, wife Dinah, set about a £7 million investment programme to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marinas.

They aimed to match Mylor’s fabric and infrastructure to its natural environment.

Speaking following his appointment, Salter said: “This is a golden chance I couldn’t miss – a chance to use all my years of experience in the marine field, working with a fantastic team and building on Roger’s great legacy – all in one of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles.”

Nearly 100 people applied for the position.

Graffy explained while Salter was “the dream candidate”.

“We needed someone who would share our values and was capable of building and growing the business and all the people in it,” said Graffy, who will remain as chairman and, with Dinah, will continue to own the company.

“We also wanted to find someone who was better than me – and I’m delighted to announce that such a person exists!” he continued.

“Neil believes in building great teams, delivering excellent customer service, developing sites, working safely and maximising financial performance – all of which makes him our dream candidate for the job,” concluded Graffy.

Salter will be in overall charge of all Mylor Yacht Harbour’s operations.

This includes its marine team of engineers, technicians and boat-builders, its boat storage and marina activities and developments.

The search is on for a new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall.

Roger Graffy has announced he is stepping down from the post. Although he will be less involved in the day to day management of the company, he will still remain as chairman and owner.

Graffy. who had a childhood passion for the sea and boats, spent 20 years and millions in investment turning Mylor Yacht Harbour into a thriving, state of the art marine business.

He and his wife, Dinah bought Mylor Yacht Harbour in 1997 after recognising its potential.

Mylor’s enormous natural charm had made it a draw for the yachting community from the 1960s and 200 years earlier it was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports.

The husband and wife team set about a £7 million investment programme “to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marina – matching the fabric and infrastructure of this Cornish gem to its incomparable natural environment. Their vision – and investment to date – has enabled the creation of a modern marina and onshore facilities, securing the preservation of the historic buildings, landscape and working traditions for future generations,” said a press release from the company.

Recent shore-side development has seen the building of a new yacht club, café and shops, shower blocks and a new marina office – counterbalanced with the demolition of the dilapidated old yacht club in order to save and protect the Grade II Listed Quay on which it stood.

“This has been a hugely rewarding project and a big part of my life,” says Graffy. “It’s taken all the energy of our fantastic team of 45 and support from the whole community including berth-holders, customers, fishermen, local council and holidaymakers. We’ve continued to thrive and expand the yard with our Marine Team of expert craftsmen and technicians who have the world-class skills to match any vessel – ancient or modern.”

One of Graffy’s proudest achievements with his team was realising a dream to build the first new classic wooden Falmouth Sunbeam yachts in 20 years – built in the Mylor sheds on exactly the same lines as their 90-year-old sisters.

“I’m about to turn 60 and Mylor has occupied my energies and enthusiasm for the past 20 years,” says Graffy, “so I think it is a good time to hand the helm to someone brilliant with the vision to keep this wonderful business and way of life growing and thriving into the future.”

Ports of Call Marvellous Mylor

Alex whittaker explores an idyllic slice of cornish heritage with its own sheltered modern marina ….

M ylor Harbour is just up the River Fal from Falmouth, situated on the famed Carrick Roads. This is a broad and deep estuary that often feels like a Scandinavian fjord. It is listed as the third-largest natural harbour in the world. In fact, it is a geographical ria: a flooded river valley created by vast amounts of meltwater at the end of the last ice age.

All-tide harbour

For our sort of vessel, with a draught of less than 2m, Mylor is accessible at all states of the tide. In typical Cornish style, the trees and lush greenery of the Carrick Roads come right down to the water’s edge. ‘Idyllic’ is a somewhat overused descriptor these days, but frankly, for Mylor Harbour, the Fal Estuary and the Carrick Roads, it fits the bill.

Approach from sea

Mylor Harbour is situated on the western shore of the Falmouth Estuary. In fact, Mylor Harbour lies at the mouth of Mylor Creek, 2 miles downstream of Mylor Bridge village. The approach from sea is straightforward. As you pass St Anthony’s Lighthouse and Black Rock at the entrance to the Carrick Roads, you will see St Mawes on your starboard hand and Falmouth and the docks to port. Continue heading north up the Carrick Roads following the channel markers to stay in deep water. Famed Pendennis Castle, one of Henry VIII’s forts, lies on the wooded hill to port. Legend has it that it was circular so that French cannonballs would bounce off. When adjacent to St Just on your starboard hand, turn to port and head straight for the Mylor channel markers at the outer edge of the moorings. These can be hard to spot against the foot of the forest of masts of the marina moorings, but look closely and you will make out the red port and green starboard Mylor Harbour entrance buoys. Trickle between them and follow the marked fairway through the moorings and you will arrive at the entrance to the marina.

Visitors’ pontoon

The visitors’ berth is called ‘E Pontoon’. Call ahead on Channel 37 or 80. It is clearly signposted and surrounds the eastern side of the marina. Water, electricity and fuel are all available on this pontoon. Note that the marina and moorings never dry, and that the marina and fairway are dredged to 2m below chart datum. Only if your vessel has a draught of over 2m must you take care on your approach to Mylor at low water.

The harbour and marina

Mylor actually comprises a historic working harbour, a unique horseshoe-shaped fully serviced marina and a large number of deep-water moorings. The marina offers 180 pontoon berths and there are a further 250 moorings in a vast fan beyond the marina entrance. For any keen boating person, this is all as it should be. These vast moorings reminded us of the huge summer armada moored off Abersoch. The marina feels like a river and possesses that authentic air of history and heritage. Thankfully it has not been overdeveloped, but luckily for us fussy powerboaters it does have all the modern facilities we desire. You can spend a long time at the quayside hostelry sipping a cold drink and watching harbour life go by.

Mylor Harbour

Harbour reception

This is slightly up the hill from the quay. This building is the overall reception for the harbour, as distinct from the marina office and reception on the quay.

We are utterly delighted to report that Mylor’s main public slipway is free. Truly excellent. Other council harbours and marinas take note (Mylor Harbour is privately owned by the Graffy family). We could certainly put our 24-footer into the water with its twin-axle trailer on this wide ramp. There was also a nifty coin-op washdown machine at the top of the slip. We have used similar in the Med and they are very handy. You can wash off the light fouling and salt from your hull, outboard or drive before tackling the long road trip home. The harbour also has its own chargeable slip and very convenient hoist. For many moons, we have preferred to get our own boat hoisted in, thus avoiding any salt damage to our trailer, its brakes, lights and wheel bearings.

Car and trailer parking

You may arrange trailer and car parking with the marina. There are special zones for trailers with appropriate pay machines. However, we would always advise ringing ahead in the very busy summer season to check availability.

Toilets, showers, launderette

At first glance, the white toilet and shower building looks a bit like a ‘bog block’ from a 1970s campsite. However, inside is a very different story. Most significantly, it has a disability access ramp. It is also well appointed inside. However, the high point is the truly wonderful shower arrangements. These shower cubicles have been designed by sensible boating adults well versed in family practicality, and not some big-city design house. And get this: your shower cubicle is very much more than that. It has a larger outer dry cubicle with a decent-sized shower cubicle inside that. And here’s the killer: you also have a lavatory en suite! In addition, the whole design is sufficiently spacious that dressing is easy. Unlike some tiny marina shower cubicles, you never bang your elbows on anything harsh. Furthermore, the floors do not run with water, and your Docksides, clothes and towel remain dry. This happy functionality is worth a thousand designer tiles, and a score of irritatingly fashionable mixer taps. Full marks, Mylor.

Mylor

Boatyard and services

Mylor Harbour as a whole has a reputation for its provision of comprehensive boat services. On top of the third-party services, engineers and support businesses that you may choose yourself, Mylor provides its own one-stop ‘Marine Team’. Full details on their website. The idea is to offer the boat owner a complete service. However, one little consumer tableau we observed (anonymously) may prove instructive … It was early morning and we were standing by our tow vehicle where the Marine Team were mustering long before work. One Marine Team mechanic was drinking his coffee when an ordinary punter like you or I came up and needed someone urgently to look at his engine. This was at least 10 minutes before official opening time. The Marine Team mechanic immediately took ownership of the problem, put down his mug and walked off briskly with the punter to sort out the problem. Now, over the years I have often been that punter, and the responses I have received have been variable to say the least. Once more, full marks to Mylor.

Linear boatyard

The boatyard itself really amazed me. It was very unusual, and very attractive – in a traditionally boaty way. Essentially it is a linear boatyard running uphill within a picturesque wooded ravine. It’s long too – around three-quarters of a mile. Here and there were stations for boats on the hard, with metered electricity points and water. One sunny morning before breakfast, I walked all the way to the top. Here it meets the green fields and the lowing of cows. If you love being among boats and boatyards in a rural setting, this might be the best and most dramatic yard you will find.

Dry berthing

The dry berthing offered at Mylor is where your boat is stored safely and securely ashore, and not on a floating pontoon. Essentially, you ring ahead with an agreed lead time, and the marina staff put your boat in the water for you. This offer interested us, especially if one was considering stationing one’s trailer boat at Mylor for a whole summer season.

A Mylor single dry berthing cycle consists of launch, haul-out and pressure wash. Boats stored on trailers receive 10 launch cycles per package, while vessels without a trailer receive six. Dry berthing contracts begin at 6.1m and do not include smaller craft. You also get car parking for one car – an interesting proposition if you were researching the idea of keeping your boat in sunny Cornwall for a season and just driving down to it. The Mylor website has all the details.

fuel berth

Mylor does have a big blue crane, which is probably used for stepping masts, but most powerboaters would be interested in the marina’s Marine Team 35-tonne hoist.

Water and electricity

All marina pontoon berths have water and electricity.

The marina Wi-Fi is free and is a fibre connection. Naturally, fair use conditions apply.

Very conveniently, Mylor has a well-stocked chandlery on site. It is on the ground floor of the aforementioned harbour reception building. This reassuring facility helps to make longer summer stays in Mylor that much more attractive – especially so since Mylor is a bit remote from other boating centres by road.

Mylor Harbour has both petrol and diesel fuel available at its easily approached fuel berth. Mylor Marina offers discounts on fuel for berth holders.

A full range of recycling options are offered. We all need to do our bit, and every little helps.

Victualling

There is no shop at the harbour, but the ever-helpful Café Mylor offers staples such as eggs, milk and bread for sale. There is a village stores, but that is a long walk away (see Mylor Bridge details below).

The water taxi service costs £2.50 per trip and serves all the marina pontoons and the 250 outlying moorings. A seasonal pass costs £116 per boat. Significantly, this pass is free to marina contract holders.

Mylor Sailing School

This enterprise offers the full range of RYA courses and more. Check the website for full details.

Mylor Yacht Club

With its commanding presence above the harbour and its massive terrace, it was easy to imagine this smart new building thronging with happy, healthy yachting and powerboating types. Alas, the curse of Covid meant that we could only use our imagination. However, it is clearly a bold new facility. We really liked the building, and its little brother, the quayside marina office. Check out the MYC website:

https://myloryachtclub.org.uk

As we always note at this point, yacht clubs are mines of local knowledge for the visiting powerboating family.

Harbourside accommodation

Mylor Harbour offers self-catering accommodation. We noticed the handsome white Kingsmoor Cottage, right on the quay. Details on the Mylor website.

Mylor is at the end of a very long and sensationally pretty country lane. It is quite a way to any pub or restaurant, so if you have arrived by boat, your choices may come down to eating out around the harbour. You have two choices. In the interest of journalistic integrity, we tried both alternatives for you. We could not try the yacht club since it seemed to be closed due to Covid.

Cafe Mylor

Spacious Mylor Yacht Club with convenient food and retail units under.

We breakfasted at Café Mylor, situated on its own terrace with great views, just beneath Mylor Yacht Club. On a brilliantly sunny Cornish morning, it was a joy to eat out above the busy quay.

Top tip: Go for the ‘Mini Cornish Breakfast’, which was easily enough to see us through the day!

The young staff were very good indeed. As already mentioned, in the absence of a provisions shop, you can also buy a few staple foods here. They offer a click and collect service for meals too. Handy for impromptu back-deck parties.

This is both a restaurant and a pub, the latter bafflingly being called Castaways East. There is also a related range of outdoor tables on the quay, so Castaways actually offers two choices of al fresco and interior dining. We attended (without booking because we were late) on a very busy summer evening. The friendly and slickly efficient staff made a heroic effort and fitted us in. Better to book! We dined upstairs and the menu would certainly suit most crews, especially those with children and fussy teenagers. We tried the steak frites from the Castaways menu. It was very good, and not dear either at £17 each. The full menu is accessible online complete with prices: https://castawaysmylor.com/menu .

They also have a good ‘grape list’ since they are also a wine bar. The house red was very smooth, and the brandy offered with the after-dinner coffee was pukka Courvoisier. No silly prices, just good value for money. Recommended.

Coastal footpath network

Mylor Harbour is right on a network of local footpaths. Walking under the trees with glimpses of blue water on a sun-dappled pathway is one of the great joys of traditional Cornwall. It never disappoints – and, of course, it is free.

Mylor Bridge village

This pleasant Cornish village has a well-stocked shop for provisions and booze, but it is quite a way up alongside Mylor Creek from the harbour – around 1.4 miles and about 30 minutes, in fact. A bit too long for me to walk and haul back the groceries on a hot day!

The verdict

Mylor is a prime ‘staycationing’ venue for the keen powerboating family. If we were to re-station our petrol powerboat in Cornwall, Mylor would be our first choice. It has all we would need, set in an area of truly outstanding natural beauty. The secluded local beaches, which are only accessible by boat, are very alluring. The range of day boating and cruising options further afield is rich and varied. The harbour has retained its heritage and yet offers all the modern facilities we might require. We loved the marina’s simple but good eating-out options, and Mylor’s amazing linear boatyard. Most of all, we loved that almost indefinable celebration of Cornishness.

10 fun facts about Mylor

7 Major Ports in Russia

As the largest of all the landmasses in the entire world, Russia has an extensive coastline. It features on the periphery of the Arctic Ocean surrounding its entire North for trading prospects. The Barents Sea, with the South-Eastern side touching the Sea of Japan encompasses the major ports in Russia.

60% of the total cargo movement on the international scale for Russia takes place through the sea. This includes almost 722 million MT (2016) cargo movement through international vessel calls.

A staggering 67 thousand plus ship calls come through this busy network every year. However, the modern handling facilities ensure that the median handling time for these ships remains 1.45 days. This means the port facilities under the Russian Government’s reach are the best in the business!

As a shipping nation, the Russian seafarers are plenty in number across the globe. The country’s shipping strength boasts over 2820 vessel registrations and 98,000 seafarers under them.

Major Ports Of Russia

In this article, we review the major ports in Russia of inland and international importance. We highlight their share in building the 571 496 million current US$ shipping market in the country. The details also contain their accurate location, identity code, and other geographical information.

1. Port of Novorossiysk (Krasnodar Krai, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUNVS Latitude: 44.720065° Longitude: 37.81373°

Port of Novorossiysk

The port of Novorossiysk has a 3.4 sq. km harbour area with a land area worth 2.7 sq. km. This includes a total of 89 functioning berths for vessels of all sizes. It features as the biggest seagoing port for Russia for over decades with almost 50% higher turnover.

The establishment of the port of Novorossiysk dates back to 1829, with major exchanges since 1846. The port’s range of services recorded 143 million MT of cargo handling for 2020. It includes one of the first Timber wood handling facilities to feature across the Black Sea ports.

Cargo Handling

A total of 11 berths are important in handling timber and other bulk cargo. 4 separate berths over a quay length of 570 meters handle the container operations. The sheer size of the facility allows maximum handling limits of 208 million MT every year.

Network and Layout

The timber operations across the 4 berths (31, 32, 31/A, 31/5) are the most advanced facility across Europe. Their throughput every year crosses figures between 400 thousand to 600 thousand.

This connects with direct railway and loading facilities, reaching out to 70% of timber industries. Meanwhile, 180 thousand and more TEU capacity of container handling adds to the port’s large-scale profits.

2. Port of Saint Petersburg (St. Petersburg, Russia)

UN/Locode: RULED Latitude: 59.91933° Longitude: 30.327035°

Port of Saint Petersburg

The Port of Saint Petersburg has one of the deepest drafts for any Russian facility. The inner anchorage ranges between 23 to 25 meters while the channel draft is approx. 18.5 to 23 meters.

As one of the major ports in Russia, its water area spreads over an expanse of 164 sq. km. Meanwhile, the beginning of its establishment dates back to 1869. At present, the facility uses 470 vessels for in-house operations along their coast.

The passenger terminal at St. Petersburg handles over 450 vessels annually. This happens over a dozen of berths, with 2 major terminals having the alongside the extent of 360 meters.

The total mooring size capacity of this facility is over 30 kilometres. This includes the working capacity of more than 200 berths of various sizes in this facility.

St. Petersburg famously works with 8 major cranes of Panamax capacity. This couples with 3 RMG and 20 gantry nature cranes for handling container goods. This rounds off to the port’s annual handling figures to well over 2 million every year.

The facility connects with major cargo shipping destinations through 2 dozen operating lines. It acts as the major gateway for providing shipping access to the Russian interiors. The neighbouring ports like Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, etc. act as the feeder terminals for the super container ships .

Over 122 tugs and 3 dozen oil barges are resident for berthing and bunkering operations. The rail line operates through the container segment of the port, handling container transport.

3. Port of Ust-Luga (Kingiseppsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUULU Latitude: 59.68294° Longitude: 28.329515°

Port of Ust-Luga

The port of Ust-Luga stands only behind Novorossiysk in terms of cargo handling volume for 2020. It has the biggest handling facility for coal bulk operations in the Northern part of Russia. The additional expansion plans provide this facility with a total area of 30 sq. km.

Ust-Luga has 5 major berths that operate for round the year operation in severe temperatures. These handle over 30 vessels at once with anchorage facilities over 20 meters and higher depth.

The state-of-art coal loading facilities handle export abilities up to 20 million MT annually. It also is one of the newest facilities in Russia, dating back to 2011 for its establishment.

The loading conveyors for the coal handle up to 500 MT every hour on average. This facility accommodates vessels ranging up to 60,000MT of DWT for coal loading.

In addition, Ust-Luga also handles livestock, liquid, and general cargo operations. The overall cargo operations have figures worth 102.6 million MT for 2020. 2 mega cranes of 104 MT capacity and 1 of 80 MT capacity operate simultaneously with the conveyor system.

The berthing network contains a ramp bridge terminal and 7 deep berths spread across 1500 meters. Their operations handle 1000 to 1450 vessels up to 1,20,000 MT DWT.

The layout also has a warehouse for final goods handling, spread over 2800 sq. meters. This facility connects with the Ust-Luga railway terminal that has a special station for the port. The plan is for expanding the facility for over 26 train arrivals every day in the next decade.

4. Port of Vostochny (Nakhodka Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVYP Latitude: 42.762495° Longitude: 133.0514°

Port of Vostochny

The port of Vostochny operates with two major terminals for a handling capacity of 80 million MT. In 2020, the facility shows stats worth 77 million MT including the export. In the internodal structure, the coal loading takes place at the special coal terminal.

The facility is amongst the oldest in the major ports in Russia, dating back to 1974. The trans-Siberian railway connects the terminal to the most prominent end-user plants. Vostochny’s major exports connect with the Asian countries, with Japan and Korea using up to 60%.

Over 550 vessel arrivals for the year 2019 have mostly bulk carriers of different sizes. The facility accommodates vessels up to 1,80,000 MT DWT for bulk coal operations.

The general handling facilities show 300,000 units of rail cars carrying the cargo for this period. The discharge to these rails uses the conveyor mechanism with automatic operations.

The Vostochny terminal employs over 1700 people for the cargo and operational routines. The spreading layout uses 98% of mechanical and electrical automation for operations.

With the progressive development of their phase 3, the handling capacities will touch over 100 million MT. As a result, the net income of the facility amounts to an annual figure of 125 million USD.

5. Port of Primorsk (Vyborgsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUPRI Latitude: 60.3463° Longitude: 28.67096°

Port of Primorsk

The Port of Primorsk is spread across a land piece of 5.4 sq. km area for cargo operation. This is in addition to the 32 sq. km of water limits within their expanse. It features amongst the top Russian ports by volume, handling 50 million MT+ cargo annually.

The initial operations at the facility date back to the year 2001, with a further increase in 2004. The facility operates 6 major berths that spread across a length of 2.8 km alongside. The deepest tanker-handling terminals allow drafts up to 17.8 meters for convenient loading.

An annual handling capacity of 60 million MT and more of liquid cargo allows major export relations. The Primorsk port also stands out as the highest contributor to oil exports in Russia.

The operations include 50 major oil extraction firms for direct loading transfers. All loading arms connect for a throughput of 2800 cubic meters loading rate for bigger tankers. This allows tankers of 1,50,000 DWT capacity to arrive with better draft features.

The wide oil handling range connects with the Baltic Pipeline and serves at its one end. This comes with a specific terminal for gas loading operations that operates 8-24hrs for cargo.

The 2 phases of pipeline extending onwards span over 1000 kilometres for oil handling. These terminals involve 250 regular employees with camera surveillance measures.

6. Port of Murmansk (Kola Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUMMK Latitude: 68.984125° Longitude: 33.061°

Port of Murmansk

With its location on the northern end of the Arctic circle, Murmansk is the coldest Russian port. It also is the largest to lie on the North of this geography. It is also the geographical North-most amongst the major ports in Russia.

The port helps to house the ice-breaking vessels assisting the larger vessels passing through the Arctic. Its establishment owing to this reason is also quite old, dating back to 1917.

The port operates through its 15 berths, 11 of which are for solid cargo. These berths divide into 2 major port districts or nodes for operation. The general berths operate over 1.5 km in length, while the oil terminals operate on half the figure.

In 2021, Murmansk has figures worth 56 million MT of cargo through its facility. All major bulk cargo operations take place through the gantries at a steady rate. The operates to switch between 16 and 32 MT per hour operation capacity for these.

Meanwhile, the bulk liquid berths vary between 10 to 15 meters in depth. The 3 terminals that use the roadways facility operate the majority of bulk operations.

Despite its challenging location, Murmansk operates round the year. Its expanse has an additional third node for car and container handling tasks. It is the only node with length restrictions, with vessels coming up to 220 meters long.

Major bulk cargo storage facility houses more than 25000 MT in this area. The facility houses over 200 operators for cargo, and less than 100 for ice-breaking requirements.

7. Port of Vladivostok (Vladivostok, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVVO Latitude: 43.087445° Longitude: 131.9022°

Port of Vladivostok

The port of Vladivostok provides Russia with an opportunity to explore the Pacific. It extends towards the south-eastern end and touches the Sea of Japan for the bulk Asian traffic. This facility spreads across 55 hectares and also provides a cultural significance for the Russian landmass.

Vladivostok has a record of handling 24 million MT of cargo for 2021. It is significantly higher than its 13.9 million MT average across the decade. The port’s establishment starts in the 1800s, with free status existence in between.

The terminal operates through its range of 15 berths for general operations. Each of these varies between 10 to 15 meters for depth. The approach through the channel gives a depth of up to 25 meters.

A collection of 200 automatic and semi-automatic loading resources are available overall. This includes the STS, RMG, and RTG facilities operating alongside. The container handling facilities operate round the year for efficient discharging.

Being the south-eastern tip, the Vladivostok network has major relation with Asian ports. 45% and more of their trade flow through Korea, Japan, and China in combination. The layout divides into the universal and the container-specific terminals for operation.

An area of 450,000 sq. meters is available for the warehouse storage and handling of goods. The inter-port handling facilities feature a train map and 2 major truck checkpoints.

Russian Shipping Riches

The sea transport shares a stake worth 112 087 million current USD for the Russian trade. This creates a significant impact for managing international trade, despite the large land area. The concentration of land does not have too big inland waterways, leading to major ocean ports.

Moreover, the testing conditions while operating in the Arctic do not make the cargo movement easier. In such situations, the Russian authorities focus highly on developing the ice-breaking fleet for year-long operations.

With a diverse portfolio, the major ports in Russia handle cargo of every significant use. The country’s latest focus on developing a green corridor is in line with the shipping requirement and future.
