America’s Cup clothing: What each team wears and why

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 8, 2021

This edition of the America's Cup sees teams racing at speeds of up to 50 knots in an incredibly intense environment. So what goes into the kit bag of a sailor at the very top end of the sport?

americas-cup-world-series-contenders-american-magic-patriot-crew-credit-Will-Ricketson

Watching the AC75 s cracking along on a foil, it’s easy to forget that innovation pervades every element of elite racing, particularly America’s Cup racing and goes well beyond simply boat design.

Right down to the helmets the sailors wear and their choice of rash vest, hundreds of hours of R&D lie behind the garments on display.

America’s Cup rules stipulate between 3kg and 5kg of gear per team member, which has to include everything from water bottles to goggles, personal flotation devices to gloves. Little wonder, then, that there has been an intensive effort by the clothing brands that work with each team to develop new materials and new ways of building garments.

“No ‘off-the-shelf’ sailing kit exists for the extremities of America’s Cup racing, so the athletes’ technical gear needed to be custom made,” says Henri-Lloyd’s Sarah Alexander. Those garments are now being put to the test, and the most successful elements will find their way through to the commercial lines available to us mere mortals, when we choose what to wear sailing . Here’s a look at what might be heading for your locker.

Garmin Wearables

In gearing up for the Cup, all the teams made use of cutting edge electronics to monitor heart rate and performance during training sessions, logging progress. For instance, INEOS Team UK crewmembers wore Garmin HRM Pro heartrate monitors connected to Fenix 6 GPS watches and Edge bike computers.

“There were no special tweaks made for the team,” says Garmin’s Erika Dulay. “But they do use certain features more than others (training load, sleep etc). From this they were able to collect data and show progression from the beginning of their training throughout.”

The crew on American Magic wore specially commissioned Garmin Marq Captain watches, with sailing features including ‘tack assist’ and wind direction analysis, and fitness tracking that includes a specific profile for sail grinding.

INEOS Team UK just missed out on the America's Cup

INEOS Team UK made it to the Prada Cup Final

INEOS Team UK

All eyes were on Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK after the team confounded pundits ahead of the Prada Cup. They may have ultimately failed to win the Prada Cup but the team threw a great many resources at their impressive effort alongside partners like Henri-Lloyd on the clothing side. They have developed the Aero-Foil line, which they describe as the lightest, most agile sailing kit they’ve ever made.

The range includes a neoprene pant and long john, a hybrid pant, long- and short-sleeved rash vests and the warmup jacket.

Features include varying thicknesses of neoprene to balance protection and mobility. So, there is a 3mm panel in front of the knee and over the hips, which are constantly working, with thinner 2mm neoprene behind the knee and in the body. There is no lining or hem to arm and leg holes, to eliminate a few more grams of weight, while the arm holes are oversized to make it easier to pull the garment on and off when wet.

There are seams, but they are positioned with great precision to avoid chafing. And instead of heavy stitching, they use glue and tape for closure. A silicone coating is printed to the inner cuff for grip and anti-abrasion material is printed onto the knee and seat.

Although air temperatures in Auckland are pretty balmy, there is a real risk of cooling down after the intensity of a race is over. “We are sailing in 25°C plus of heat in a black trench with no airflow, so for us to have kit that we can be close to max heart rate in, be comfortable in, be super sweaty in, and the kit not be an annoyance is fantastic,” says grinder David ‘Freddie’ Carr.

“Then as soon as we finish the racing and we’re calming down on the tow back in, when the wind chill is quite high, to chuck on all the relevant kit [such as our Henri-Lloyd warm up jacket] to keep you primed and warm and ready to hit the dock in good shape is equally as important.”

Limited numbers of the AC line are available, but Henri-Lloyd is awaiting final feedback from the team to see which features to bring forward into new collections. “Many of the Aero-Foil items will be standard kit going forward,” says the firm’s Sarah Alexander.

America's Cup Defender, New Zealand

Emirates Team New Zealand is the Defender of the America’s Cup

Emirates Team New Zealand – America’s Cup Defender

Swedish outfit, Sail Racing International, is the official supplier to the kiwi team. It produces two grand prix collections called 50KTS and Reference, developed with Oracle Team USA during the last America’s Cup.

The Emirates Team New Zealand gear is heavily based on that – all in black, naturally enough. “We have made some tweaks to the garments that ETNZ is using while racing to make the team more flexible, faster and waterproof,” says Erik Martinsson, crew centre manager at Sail Racing.

“On the neoprene pant, for example, we have excluded some shin guards to make it a little bit lighter, and made the waist on the back a little bit higher.”

The short and long-sleeved rash vests are in super-stretchy layered construction of nylon, elastane and durable water-repellent treatment. Astonishingly, this imparts waterproofing similar to that of a top-line foul weather jacket (20,000WP), and breathability that goes far beyond the norm.

A mesh panel at the back permits extra stretch and there are Rashguard panels on the arms and sides.

The long john is in thin 2mm neoprene, while there is stretchy GORE-Tex fabric for the warm-up jackets. “When you come to rashguards and bottom halves, we still have some neoprene but we have also applied some super-stretch fabric instead,” says Henric Vikestam, head of design and production. “Neoprene is a rubber sponge, so not so functional.”

Some of the ETNZ garments are available online, but the more specialised gear that has been modified for the America’s Cup is only available for the team. “These items are usually based on gear we have in our collections, but small adjustments are made to fit even better for purpose of these fantastic AC75s!” says Vikestam.

The Kiwi team also wear helmets designed by Aldo Drudi, a legend in the motorcycling world who elevated Valentino Rossi’s headgear to a piece of art.

American Magic

Helly Hansen is the clothing brand behind the US team’s clothing. Terry Hutchinson and his crew may have gone home empty handed, but they also devoted huge attention to the technical gear worn in the boat.

“Every fabric, seam, panel and zipper makes a difference in enabling crews to execute their responsibilities to perfection on deck in such a fast-paced environment,” says Paul Stoneham, CEO of Helly Hansen.

Helly Hansen has translated the extreme requirements of its America’s Cup garments into a slightly more commercial offering under the HP Foil Pro moniker, available through its online shop. The range currently extends to a jacket (830g), a smock top (630g) and a pair of shorts. A softshell jacket will also be launched this spring, built of 4-way stretch fabric that gives great freedom of movement.

Photo: Will Ricketson/American Magic

Based on feedback from the American Magic team during training, the smock top was designed with low-profile zippers on the front kangaroo pocket and front zipper, hiding a mesh ventilation system. The close-to-body fit reduces drag and improves freedom of movement. All the garments use three-ply Helly Tech for waterproofing and extreme breathability, plus sonic-welded seams to keep weight down and improve aerodynamics.

The jackets also incorporate latex neckline and cuffs for comfort. “We are honoured to work closely with the American Magic team as we continue to evolve our designs to perform at the highest level of professional sailing,” said Øyvind Vedvik, category managing director of sailing at Helly Hansen.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

The Italian team took a unique approach by signing up Australia’s Woolmark company to develop technical garments made with natural merino wool.

Among the properties of its very fine fibres are superb breathability, good wicking away of moisture and excellent thermoregulation – all key traits in technical sailing clothing. “We tested the garments on support tenders in rough conditions at 50 knots, by fire-hosing someone for 30 minutes to test waterproofing,” says Luna Rossa’s design and development manager Shannon Falcone, also a crewmember and veteran Cup sailor.

“Our Merino wool garments passed these tests and more. I want guys on the team to wear this, not because they have to contractually, but because it’s the best gear they’ve ever worn.”

The wardrobe includes a waterproof jacket, a soft-shell jacket, a polo shirt, a wet jacket, a blouson, a T-shirt and a wetsuit and base-layers – all made from varying proportions of Merino wool alongside some synthetic fibres.

There’s also an impressive sustainability message to the tie-up between Luna Rossa and Woolmark. “Choosing a fibre like wool, that is both natural and biodegradable, is closely tied to our goal of minimising ocean pollution, an issue to which our team is very sensitive,” says Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena.

Personal Floatation Devices in the America’s Cup

There’s no off-the-shelf option when it comes to the mandatory personal flotation device that each Cup crewmember has to wear.

Light weight is obviously key, and it must include comms equipment, an oxygen cylinder and snorkel for emergency breathing, and a safety knife. It should also allow the sailors to move as freely as possible, and be highly breathable.

Spinlock supplies INEOS Team UK’s PFD and has used innovative materials to maximise breathability, while getting the overall weight down to about 600g. INEOS Team UK trimmer Nick Hutton says the PFD is based on work done with Spinlock during the previous America’s Cup. “For this next iteration, we have retained all the ‘likes’ of the previous model and developed them for our new AC75 PFD.

“Every detail needs to be taken into consideration when developing our kit and we need to go into a training session or race knowing we have done everything we can to ensure the crew are wearing the best safety equipment while also being comfortable and able to perform to their optimum.”

www.spinlock.co.uk

new york yacht club apparel

ETNZ and Luna Rossa have both opted for the Sea-Guard PFD designed by Dainese, best known for its motorbike and skiing protection. Consequently, the garment looks somewhat different, with much more visible spinal protection than the Spinlock vest. It weighs a little more at 700g, and includes a water bladder at the top of the back.

Again, breathability is the key. “Once you’ve got it on, you almost don’t feel you have it on,” says Dainese CEO Cristiano Silei.

While ETNZ has opted for a proprietary Dainese technical fabric for the vest, Luna Rossa uses a fabric incorporating precious platinum from another supplier. It also carries the spinal protection right down to the coccyx. Shannon Falcone of Luna Rossa adds: “I think we couldn’t have expected anything better. It is the ideal combination of practicality, wearability and safety.”

www.dainese.com

Some of the gear worn by America’s Cup crews is outside any sponsorship deal, and selected by each individual simply because they like it!

This is the case for footwear, for example, where most sailors wear the shoes they know and love.

Dynamic Aussie clothing manufacturer Zhik says it has worked with lots of America’s Cup sailors on a non-branded basis, ‘due to other clothing sponsorship commitments’.

It has used the experience to hone its products, and now offers a broad range of protective garments, including its P2 personal flotation device, H1 helmet and Kollition impact suits.

The Legendary Harlem Yacht Club Harlem New York 1883 –

new york yacht club apparel

The Harlem Yacht Club , currently based on City Island in the New York City borough of The Bronx and incorporated in 1883.

Is the third oldest continuously functioning yacht club in the City of New York, the first being The New York Yacht Club, founded in 1844 in Harlem New York.

The Club is currently active in Manhattan and in Newport, Rhode Island), and followed by the Williamsburgh Yacht Club (founded in 1871 in Brooklyn, and currently still active in College Point, Queens).

The club currently has over 100 enrolled members in various membership categories.

Harlem Yacht Club was originally one of several boating clubs founded in the 19th century on the banks of the Harlem River in Harlem, New York, where it established its first clubhouse at the foot of 121st Street.

HYC was originally one of several boating clubs founded in the 19th century on the banks of the Harlem River in Harlem, New York, where it established its first clubhouse at the foot of 121st Street.

Over the next two decades, the club grew and acquired a station at College Point, Queens, where most of its races and regattas took place.

In 1894, the club sold the station at College Point while establishing a new one on property it had purchased on City Island, as its membership grew.

For the next ten years, the club occupied both locations – a clubhouse in Harlem and its City Island station on Hunter Avenue.

In 1898, the club began building an impressive Victorian-era clubhouse on City Island, which opened in June of the following year. Its opening was heralded by a “salute of seventeen guns … an illumination [of the fleet], and fireworks ashore and afloat.”

By 1901, the New York Times noted that …in place of the fishing smacks and oyster boats that once anchored in East Chester Bay is the fleet of the Harlem Yacht Club .  In 1903, the club gave up its location in Harlem , which was taken over by the newly-formed Metropolitan Yacht Club.

HYC has been at its present location on City Island since then.

The clubhouse built-in 1898 was destroyed by fire on May 29, 1915, and was replaced by the club’s current three-story structure that same year.

The destroyed building was valued at $15,000. Contents lost included the Brooklyn Yacht Club’s Deep Sea Challenge Cup.

This trophy, presented by Thomas Lipton, had been won by club member J.A. Crowley, in 1913.  Also lost were equipment and records needed to run the annual regatta.

The nearby New Rochelle Yacht Club (no longer extant) loaned HYC the required equipment to run the regatta that year.

The HYC was an early driving force in the evolution of sailing in the New York area, and a founding member of three yacht racing associations: The New York Yacht Racing Association (no longer extant), the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound (YRALIS), and the Eastchester Bay Yacht Racing Association (EBYRA). The latter two are still active today.

HYC conducted numerous regattas and became known locally for its Memorial Day Regatta. Conducted on its own initially, this regatta later became part of the YRALIS championship circuit. For over 60 years, this race was considered to be the start of the yacht racing season in western Long Island Sound. In 1892, seventy yachts participated in the event.

In its 1911 YRALIS Memorial Day regatta, the HYC hosted the first regatta of the Star class – a small fixed-keel sloop that was established as an Olympic Games class in 1932, and is still raced today.   In that same year, The New York Herald reported on the Stratford Shoal Race: Fast time was made by the twenty-six yachts that took part in the annual Stratford Shoal races of the Harlem Yacht Club, which were started from off the Execution Light…  As was common in that era, the race had both power and sail divisions.

In 1921, forty-three yachts, in twelve classes ranging from Herreshoff designed New York Yacht Club Fifties to sailing canoes, participated in HYC’s thirty-ninth annual regatta.

The NYYC Fifty class was so evenly matched that after sailing the 15-1/2 nm triangle course in just shy of two and a quarter hours, the last place boat finished only one minute and forty seconds after the leader.

The regatta was sailed in a nine to twelve knot northwesterly and lumpy seas leftover from a northeasterly wind that morning.

In 2000, the club was involved in a legal battle regarding the traditional colors ceremony. Following long-standing tradition at many yacht clubs, a cannon would be fired at sunset to signal that the American flag was about to be lowered for the day, and that all those present should stand with respect.

A complaint was filed against the club due to the noise of the cannon firing. The New York City Environmental Control Board ruled that the sound of the cannon violated city noise ordinances.

The club argued that the firing of the canon was a patriotic expression and thus constitutionally protected free speech.

In 2007, an appellate court ruled that the noise levels produced did indeed violate the Administrative Code of the City of NY, but that the club could still fire the canon, but only at reduced sound levels.

Today the Harlem Yacht Club has a diverse membership that is drawn primarily from New York City, Westchester County, NY, and New Jersey, and conducts an active calendar of racing and cruising events for owners of sailboats and powerboats.

Many of the boats are kept in the club’s large mooring field in Eastchester Bay, where it operates a 24-hour launch service during the yachting season. The club operates an active restaurant and bar on its premises.

New York Yacht Club

The mission of the New York Yacht Club is to attract and bring together a dedicated group of yachting and naval members to share and foster their interest in yachting and yacht racing; to sustain a leadership role in yachting, its history, its development, the preservation of its traditions, and the furtherance of good seamanship; to promote the highest form of Corinthian sportsmanship in national and international yachting forums and yacht racing competitions.

Stories from New York Yacht Club

On July 30, 1844, John Cox Stevens (1785-1857) and eight of his friends met aboard Stevens’ yacht Gimcrack, anchored off the Battery in New York Harbor. That afternoon, they established the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and made three critical decisions that day: first, they elected Stevens as Commodore of the Club; second, they agreed to develop rules and regulations to govern the Club; and, third, they resolved to cruise to Newport, Rhode Island, initiating the enduring connection between the Club and New England. The Club’s young fleet of eight schooner yachts set sail from New York Harbor for Newport three days later, marking the Club’s first Annual Cruise. During the passage, they made stops at various ports on Long Island Sound and even held informal speed trials. Upon reaching Newport, the members met up with yachtsmen from Boston to socialize and engage in racing activities. On August 8, the Club hosted a fleet race around Conanicut Island, a popular racecourse today. The year that followed was a busy one for the Club. It adopted its Rules and Regulations, opened its first clubhouse and held its first Annual Regatta.

The New York Yacht Club held its first Annual Regatta–a fleet race for a prize cup–on July 17, 1845. Nine yachts started opposite the new clubhouse at 9 a.m. on the Hudson River. They sailed to a turning mark near Sandy Hook in the Lower Bay and returned—a 38-mile course. The yacht Cygnet won, earning fame as the first winner of North America’s longest-running sailing regatta. Today, the New York Yacht Club has its signature clubhouse, a National Historic Landmark, on West 44th Street in New York, and a waterfront clubhouse, Harbour Court, in Newport. The Club’s first clubhouse survives. It was installed on the grounds of Harbour Court in 1999, where it serves as a reminder of the Club’s origins.

The Club continues to run its Annual Regatta, presented by Rolex. The Club also hosts the biennial Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, for international Corinthian sailors representing their yacht clubs and nations and the parallel event for U.S. yacht clubs, the Resolute Cup. The Club also hosts and participates in other national, North American and world championships.

rom 1884 to 1900, the clubhouse was a townhouse at 67 Madison Avenue. By 1898, it was chockablock with “models, members, and memorabilia,” according to the New York Daily Tribune. It was then that Commodore J. Pierpont Morgan stunned fellow members by announcing he would donate three lots on West 44th Street to build a new clubhouse. The building, brilliantly designed with nautical motifs by Whitney Warren, opened in 1901. It is famous for its Model Room and Library. The New York Times wrote of the clubhouse in 1906, “Except for the absence of motion, one might fancy oneself at sea.”

In 1987, the New York Yacht Club acquired Harbour Court, the former summer home of Commodore John Nicholas Brown, in Newport, creating a new energy and focus. The waterfront clubhouse opened in 1988 with 1,500 members and guests in attendance. In 2019, Harbour Court hosted the Club’s Dosquicentennial Celebration for members and friends to celebrate the Club’s 175 years of history.

The New York Yacht Club has hosted Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex since 1998 and many other regattas in recent years including world championships for the Etchells, J/70, Farr 40 and Melges 20 classes, the J Class Worlds, the Global Team Race Regatta, the Transatlantic Race, and the IC37 National Championships to name a few.

The Club is also highly active in team and match racing. In 2006, the Club purchased 14 Sonars in dedication of these activities. In 2014, the fleet was increased to 22 Sonars, and today, team racing at the New York Yacht Club offers some of the most intense competition in the country.

Since 2009 the New York Yacht Club has conducted the biennial Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. After a successful decade of racing in the Swan 42, the eighth one-design class created by the New York Yacht Club since 1900, the Invitational Cup transitioned to using the Club’s fleet of 20 IC37 race boats in 2019. These purpose-built machines, combined with one-design sails from North Sails, identical gear and standardized rig tune, create a level platform for amateur big-boat racing. Yacht club teams worldwide and Corinthian (amateur) sailors flock to Newport to race in this competition. During the first Invitational Cup in 2009, 19 yacht club teams from 14 countries and four continents competed, and the New York Yacht Club emerged as the winner. Since 2009, more than 1,000 sailors, comprised of teams from more than 40 yacht clubs representing 21 countries and all six continents, have competed in at least one edition of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

On August 22, 1851, the 101-foot schooner America, built by New York Yacht Club commodore and founder John Cox Stevens, raced against 15 English yachts from the Royal Yacht Squadron in the “100 Guinea Cup,” an annual lap of the Isle of Wight. The visiting America won, finishing 8 minutes ahead of its closest rival. The trophy was renamed after the winners and donated to the New York Yacht Club, along with the “Deed of Gift,” specifying that it be held in trust as a perpetual challenge trophy. So America’s prize became “The America’s Cup,” and took up residency across the Atlantic.

Media ID-1148

No challenge to race for the America’s Cup was issued until British tycoon James Lloyd Ashbury's Cambria, which showed early promise during sea trials in the Solent. Representing the Royal Thames Yacht Club, the crew of Cambria believed that the trophy could be brought home and officially submitted the first America’s Cup challenge in 1870. Cambria, up against a 17-strong fleet of New York Yacht Club schooners in New York Harbor, placed eighth. Franklin Osgood's Magic, the overall winner, successfully retained the America’s Cup and became the trophy’s very first defender.

Milan, Italy / New York, USA — Inspired by the intersection of fashion and fandom, two of the most iconic and beloved sports teams in the world, AC Milan and the New York Yankees , have launched an exclusive joint ACM x New York Yankees lifestyle collection featuring outerwear, headwear, youth items and accessories.

The two brands are recognized around the world not only for their timeless looks and on-field success, but also for being symbols of their cities’ culture and energy.

Logos and insignias representing each club are sleekly and thoughtfully featured throughout the collection, which is punctuated by stylized applications of the Yankees’ interlocking NY, the red-and-black crest of AC Milan and the distinctive script wordmarks of both teams. Each piece reflects the elegance of Milanese design and the streetwise spirit of New York, creating a lifestyle collection with broad appeal for a diverse international audience.

Beginning today, fans can purchase items from the collection in-person at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, the MLB Flagship Store in Manhattan, San Siro Stadium and all AC Milan stores in Milan, including the new boutique concept store “La Bottega del Diavolo” within the Club’s Flagship Store on Via Dante in the vibrant heart of the city. The collection is also available online at yankees.com , store.acmilan.com and MLBShop.com .

The collaboration furthers the connection between the Yankees and AC Milan’s ownership group — RedBird Capital Partners founded by Gerry Cardinale . In August 2022, Yankee Global Enterprises acquired a minority stake in the ownership of AC Milan.

“With the introduction of the ACM x New York Yankees collection, we celebrate a unique moment in the history of our two iconic brands,” said AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani. “The entirety of this collaboration is an homage to the transcendent impact that the cities of Milan and New York maintain on fashion and culture around the world, and we are eager to see that cross-cultural spirit reflected as people enjoy the collection.”

“The New York Yankees and AC Milan are each synonymous with their respective sports and cities,” said Yankees President Randy Levine . “Bringing them together for this project made sense on so many levels, especially considering how our brands resonate among fans of both sports and fashion. We are also thrilled to deepen the ties between our teams and congratulate those who provided input in the design for making a collection that has style and substance.”

Led by the capsule’s signature piece — the varsity jacket — the collection features unique items for adults and children, including t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, cardigans and New Era baseball caps and beanies. Other co-branded items include baseballs, playing cards and a notebook.

The collection comes in two distinct chromatic variations, each of which pays homage to the visual identity of both teams. In New York, the collection’s base color will primarily be the Yankees’ navy blue, and in Milan, the primary base colors will be red and black. Fans should note that the inventory of all items is extremely limited.
