The beauty of the Sea Mist perfectly complemented the beauty surrounding us. She’s a beautiful custom yacht full of wide open spaces that are unexpected for a boat. Every detail is immaculate. There wasn’t enough time to truly enjoy all the comfortable seating areas around the boat. While the Sea Mist could likely comfortably carry 20+ people, the small, private group made us feel like royalty. In addition, the smoothness of the ride aboard the Sea Mist is unparalleled. We never felt like we were out on the water. This would be the perfect trip for anyone who otherwise struggles with seasickness.

I cannot rave enough about Alaskan Luxury Cruises. For this being my first time visiting Alaska, the experience was more amazing than I imagined. The whole crew on the Sea Mist were so hospitable and warm and welcoming. Kate did a fantastic job of making sure we were taken care of. And chef Dave made every meal with so much thought. Alaska is the Perfect Summer Yacht Charter Destination

Alaska holds major appeal for those looking to reserve a tour on a private boat rental, but its greatest shortcoming is its extreme weather, making charter season only a few months long – from mid-May through mid-September.

Summer temperatures are pleasant with highs generally between 55-78° Fahrenheit. Nights are comfortably cool as the temperatures drop to the 50s, meaning you can spend your evenings outdoors or on the deck of the yacht, but you will need a jacket.

Top Alaska Boat Charter Destinations

The Inside Passage runs from Juneau and Glacier Bay in the north to Ketchikan in the south and puts on a dazzling display of ice.

The coastal mountain ranges and islands of the Inside Passage offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Tracy Arm Fjord About 70 miles south of Juneau, you’ll find Tracy Arm Fjord, a narrow, inlet with towering, craggy walls. The fjord is fascinating all by itself, with waterfalls and national protected forests along the way. If you’re lucky, you might see a black or brown bear, harbor seals, or wolves in the adjacent Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness.

But the real reason to visit is the fjord’s glaciers. Tracy Arm is home to some of Alaska’s most photogenic glaciers, including Sawyer Glacier. Sawyer is an active tidewater glacier – which means large chunks “calve” off. And when you see it up close, you’ll have the chance to witness one of these massive bergs breaking off and crashing to the sea below, as it’s known to calf regularly.

Glacier National Park If you’re in search of glaciers, you’ll find plenty in Glacier Bay National Park. Located north of Juneau, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers many spectacular sights to see, including 7 active tidewater glaciers.

Glacier Bay is home to some of Alaska’s largest active glaciers. Grand Pacific Glacier – for instance – sits at the back coast of the bay. It measures two miles wide, with ice walls towering 15 stories. Grand Pacific’s neighbor, Margerie Glacier, though, is the star of the show.

Margerie Glacier is majestic, so no wonder it is a must-see sight for many charter boats. With an ice face measuring 25 stories tall, watching the glacier drop ice into the bay will take your breath away. Beyond the glaciers, the National Park is also an incredible spot for whale-watching, kayaking, and other water sports.

Juneau Juneau is Alaska’s state capital and one of the most beautiful cities in the state. The city can only be reached by airplane or boat, there is no road access. Juneau is the perfect base for starting your Alaska yacht charter.

You can’t visit Juneau without a trip to Mendenhall Glacier. Located just 10 miles from downtown Juneau, the glacier is part of the Juneau Icefield, a photographic panorama of steel blue ice that’s been here since the last Ice Age. More on Juneau .

Sitka Sitka is located on the outer coast of Alaska’s Inside Passage and lies at the heart of the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rain forest in the world.   More on Sitka

Ketchikan Ketchikan, a lively fishing and logging community, is located in the southernmost city on the Inside Passage. Also called the “Salmon Capital of the World”, Ketchikan is known for fishing, beautiful scenery, and rich Native culture. More on Ketchikan

Hubbard Glacier Hubbard Glacier – north of Glacier Bay – is North America’s largest tidewater glacier. This is a massive giant you have to see to believe. Measuring 6+ miles wide, the glacier is continuing to grow, or “surge,” and Hubbard towers 40 stories tall.

Hubbard is also one of the most beautiful glaciers in Alaska, with jade blue and frozen sapphire hues. Not only does it wow with its vastness – it’s also a treasure to see up close. The Disenchantment Bay and journey into the fjord put on a show of wildlife. The fjord is home to seal and whale populations, and the region is well-known for its fishing.

Yacht Charter Itinerary Alaska

Experience the true beauty of Alaska onboard your private charter yacht. The breathtaking scenery, staggering glaciers, abundant wildlife, and unique culture will leave you in awe. You’ll be retelling the stories of your  Alaskan yacht charter  for years to come.

You won’t want to leave this beautiful inlet once you’ve taken in the dramatic landscapes and breathtaking terrain. Cruise between the 3,000-foot-tall cliffs on either side of the narrow passage to see incredible glacier scenery. Arguably the most spectacular glacier in Alaska, Sawyer Glacier, can be seen from the end of the Tracy Arm. Pieces of ice will calve, or fall from the glacier regularly and can be as large as a cruise ship. During the summer months, you’ll cruise through the jade-colored sea past floating pieces of ice.

Disembark and trail to see bears (securely)

This unique location is one of the few places in the world you can see brown bears and black bears living in the same habitat. Anan Creek flows into Anan Bay and features the largest salmon run in Southeast Alaska. During July and August, you’ll spot bears of all ages and sizes hoping to feast on the bountiful pink salmon. The Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory and other private guides offer safe viewing and hiking through the Tongass National Forest where these bears inhabit.

Baranof Warm Springs

No Alaskan Yacht Charter is complete without visiting Baranof Warm Springs. A well-kept secret until 1891 it is in excellent condition thanks to the local volunteers who keep the area pristine. It’s nestled between a 100-foot waterfall and Warm Springs Bay on Baranof Island making the scenery unparalleled. You can choose to soak in one of the three bathhouses featuring privacy curtains and large tubs brimming with the 120°F water from the springs. Or if you’re feeling adventurous continue up the trail to natural pools for blissful soaking next to the impressive waterfall. Because this location is only accessible by yacht or plane, Baranof Warm Springs is the ultimate Alaskan destination.

Glacier Bay (2-3 Days)

There’s no better way to experience the beauty of Glacier Bay than on one of our pristine charter yachts. Take time to experience some of the most impressive scenery, wildlife, and tidewater glaciers in the world. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve spans over 3.3 million miles and is home to over 50 named glaciers. As you cruise through the Bay, you’ll be greeted by humpback whales, sea lions, and harbor seals. Peer off into the rugged mountains to spot foraging bears, mountain goats, eagles and over 200 species of birds. Before you leave the Bay, you’ll want to head up the West Arm to the Margerie Glacier which advances up to 14 feet a day and calves frequently.

Pybus Bay/Cannery Cove

Disembark and trail to see bears.

If you’re looking for recreation, relaxation, and remote scenery you’ll find it in Cannery Cove and Pybus Bay. Located on the Southeast side of Admiralty Island and along Stephens Passage, this is a stop you won’t want to miss. Start your day by making the catch of a lifetime fishing for the plentiful varieties of salmon and halibut off the coast. Continue your adventures on one of the many hiking trails that offer glimpses of bears in their natural setting. End your day by watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky as you unwind.

Frederick Sound/The Brothers

There are many places in the world that offer whale watching, but there is no other location that offers the raw beauty, tranquility, and grace of whale watching like the Frederick Sound. As you cruise past the humpback whales and seals be sure to stop at the Five Finger Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was the first government lighthouse opened in Alaska and the last lighthouse in Alaska to be automated. The unique architecture of the lighthouse will stand out from the rugged landscapes along the coastline.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday. 

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing. 

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.  

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are "designed to be unsinkable."

"And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever," CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that "obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water," suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage - the frame of a sun awning broke - even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the forecast storm rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch's U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered, on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht's hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

"We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours," Cari said.

Extensive private search led to the discovery of plane that went missing between Juneau and Yakutat

On the day Sam Wright, Hans Munich and Tanya Hutchins disappeared in the Fairweather Range, Haines pilot Drake Olson was doing much-needed maintenance on one of the three airplanes in his hangar.

The plane, his fastest one, was in pieces on July 20 when he got a call from Munich and Hutchins, who own Coastal Air Service in Yakutat. They were on their way back from Seattle when their flight from Juneau got canceled. 

They called Olson who said he couldn’t help them – but then thought of Wright, his neighbor. 

“I arranged it,” Olson said, sighing heavily. 

“Everybody was busy. It’s the heat of the summer, all the air carriers are busy,” Olson said. So I called Sam and he said ‘no’ because he had to go to a wedding. And then he called back and he said ‘you know, I should go,’ and I said ‘Yeah, I think you should go.’ That was stupid of me.” 

It was settled. Wright flew his distinctive 1948 Beechcraft Bonanza to Juneau, and picked up Munich and Hutchins. It’s not a backcountry plane.

“That was his, you know, his commuter,” Olson said. It’s fast and sleek.” 

He landed in Juneau and picked the Yakutat couple up. 

“I got a picture from Tanya [Hutchins] from the backseat of Sam’s Bonanza as they were departing Juneau,” Olson said.  

A few hours later he got a call from Yakutat – long after the trio should have landed, as the flight generally takes less than an hour.

“It was the guy who was actually waiting for Hans and Tanya in Yakutat and .. actually saw the signal stop in the Fairweathers,” Olson said. “He called me and said – like – there’s no airplane here and it’s weird, but the signal stopped in the Fairweathers.”

Olson scrambled to get up into the air, but he was working on a part of it that takes a lot of precision adjustment – think of the serpentine belt in your car – so, it took a few hours to get his plane back together.

“I put it together hurriedly. Thoroughly, but hurriedly,” he said. “I think I left around 7 [p.m.] and I was out until after 10. I was so tired and fatigued that I was like ‘I’m a bloody hazard out here. I’ve got to go home.”

The disappearance of two deeply experienced Southeast Alaska pilots, and Hutchins, touched off a weeks-long search for any trace of the missing plane.

And it left Olson searching for answers. He described Wright and Munich as mentors and some of the few backcountry pilots he relied on for knowledge and friendship in Southeast Alaska. 

“These are the closest people that I have there and in my little corner of the world,” he said. “It’s just like, in my current world, that was my inner circle. Like, poof. Gone. Just gone.” 

The initial call about an overdue plane came into the Coast Guard just before 6 p.m. on July 20. 

Coast Guard spokesperson Shannon Kearney said the agency put out a marine broadcast and sent out the cutter Reef Shark that night. They launched a helicopter from Sitka, and a C130 from Kodiak. The Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Rescue Coordination Center got involved, as did the Civil Air Patrol. 

The flight tracking stopped at about 10,000 feet in a specific location near Mount Crillon at the southern end of the Fairweather Mountain Range. So official and unofficial searchers combed the area. 

But, just under three days later, the Coast Guard called off the official search . That left people like Olson, Haines pilot Mike Mackowiak, Clayton Jones, and others from Alaska Seaplanes and Temsco helicopters to continue the search on their own . 

When pressed, Olson can’t remember everyone but he remembers seeing a lot of people out looking, including: a pilot from Gustavus, another who flies for Alaska Seaplanes but was using his own personal plane, another in a Super Cub from Juneau. 

Others went up and photographed the area in high resolution so the photos could be examined for what tired eyes may have missed. 

And as the days dragged on and people returned to their busy summer lives and schedules, Olson said they would still pitch in where they could. 

Like Randy Kiesel from Ward Air who would send pictures when he flew by the region.  

“Cause there was weather and we were always wondering  when we could go out there and not get skunked by clouds,” Olson said. 

The trio were well-respected, so that explains some of the private effort, but Olson and others also said there’s something of a code in the tight-knit aviation community. 

“It doesn’t matter if it’s somebody I don’t even like at all. It’s like, you go. There’s human life involved, something bad has happened, we’ve got to find them. End of story. I would want that for myself,” he said. 

Especially early on when there was no sighting of the plane and some, like Olson, wondered if the data showing the plane had stopped suddenly at 10,000 feet was incorrect.  Perhaps the plane had landed somewhere else and Wright, Munich and Hutchins survived or needed help.   

 “Even though the [tracking] data showed that they hit the mountain, there was no evidence,” Olson said. “So, you go, is the data wrong? What’s going on here?”

CONFUSION & SPECULATION

But while the private search unfolded, publicly there was a lot of speculation about what had happened to the plane – fueled in part by how journalists reported on the unfolding situation. 

Both Olson and Mike Wright, Sam Wright’s son, said they were frustrated by the way the news reporting impacted people connected to the missing and the private search. 

Multiple media outlets, including the Chilkat Valley News, reported on the ongoing search and the point at which the Coast Guard called off its search for the plane. 

But Wright and Drake pointed to a specific story in the Anchorage Daily News , published on July 25, that they say gave the impression that the wreckage had been found. 

It relied on interviews with a Coast Guard communications person, the Alaska head of the National Transportation Safety Board, and a report from the Civil Air Patrol which found an “area of disturbance.” 

The story initially indicated that the Coast Guard called off its search for the plane based solely on the presumption that the crash site had been found. 

“They got the whole community of Juneau and Haines in an elevated state with their misinformation and lack of follow-through,” Wright said. 

The story was later quietly corrected to say that the discovery of a potential crash site was “one of the factors,” that prompted the suspension. But there was no indication in the story that a correction had happened until a week later. 

In response to questions about community criticism of valuing speed over accuracy, Anchorage Daily News Editor David Hulen wrote in an email that the paper takes accuracy seriously and takes care to quickly fix errors when they learn about them. 

“In this case, we initially reported that the apparent discovery of the crash site prompted the suspension of the search. The next day, the Coast Guard reached out and said it was one of multiple factors. We updated the piece to reflect that. What we failed to do was add a note or correction to the article saying it had been updated and that the earlier information had been corrected,” he said. 

Both Wright and Olson said the piece caused a lot of confusion among people following the search or who knew any of the three people aboard who were missing. 

“The impact that it has is that people, when people have lost anything – a person or a possession – there’s a lot of hope and when hope starts to get fulfilled falsely then it creates a second wave of tragedy when they find out that it was an untruth.”

Wright and Drake said they had to tell people over and over again that the plane had not been found and that people were still out there, flying in the Fairweathers, searching for it. 

“They’ve got to relive this moment multiple times,” Wright said.

Olson said private searchers lost an entire day trying to verify what was being labeled as the probable crash site, something which ultimately proved to be inaccurate. 

A comprehensive account of what happened isn’t expected from the National Transportation Safety Board for some time. But, the agency released a preliminary report in mid-August.

It shows Wright’s plane leaving Juneau around 1:45 p.m. and heading northwest for about 70 miles before turning southwest and heading into the park for another 30 miles. Just after 2:20 p.m., the signal abruptly stops on the eastern side of East Crillon mountain. The plane was flying more than 160 miles per hour. 

The report details that a private search of the accident site revealed portions of the plane wreckage on the eastern side of East Crillon Mountain at just over 6,000 feet, some 4,500 feet below where the plane is believed to have crashed into the mountain. 

That private searcher was Drake Olson. 

FINDING THE PLANE

On the morning of Aug. 5, when Olson found the wreckage of the missing plane, he woke up early – around 4:30 a.m. He made himself a coffee and headed to his hangar at the Haines airport to prep one of his Cessnas. 

“The idea was the morning light, with no clouds, it was a different angle of light,” he said. “Maybe I’d pick up a reflection in that different light.” 

He was up in the air at about 6:30 a.m. and out near Mount Crillon to search within an hour. He looked for a while, but – it just didn’t feel right. 

“I was so fatigued,” he said. “I didn’t have my … you have to have this gunslinger attitude – your flight swagger – when you fly anywhere around here,” he said. “I felt like a child. I was out there like ‘wow. This is gnarly.’”

So, he descended and landed on a nearby beach. He walked in the warm sand, ate some food and took a nap.

“I looked my airplane over cause I hadn’t flown it in awhile. I did a few little tweaks because it was running a little hot. And, god, we were much better after that,” he said. “We were totally relaxed and in sync. We were like peas and carrots. We were right with the world.” 

He climbed inside, took off and started climbing. Zig-zagging back and forth, first over Mount La Perouse, a 10,700ish foot peak nearby. 

“The whole thing changed,” he said. “After that rest I was like – f*** – lots of people, professionals and everybody, amateurs have looked and looked and looked and really? This is how it ends? Like, not a shred, really? Because, this is it for me, I think. I’m about over this.” 

With that attitude – and the idea that he may never return to searching again – he really started to catalog his surroundings. 

“My eyes have never painted this area as thoroughly,” he said. “I’m seeing more of this area than I have ever seen. I’m back and forth and back and forth and back and forth.”

He practiced a few approaches in spots he thought he could land on La Perouse and Mount Crillon – learning the lay of the land, then just low power floating. 

“I just kept working my way up, up, up, up, until I was at that kind of crash altitude,” he said. 

The place where Wright’s plane stopped broadcasting a signal is right around 10,000 feet. It’s a place he had returned to over and over again. A place people had flown dozens of times looking but never seeing. 

And in that angled morning light, Olson saw a flash. 

“That reflection, right down below but you’re really right up against the mountain and looking down it,” he said. 

Initially it was hard to keep track of it. He could only see a flash for a second at a time as he was flying in circles, then it would be gone. 

“It was like a mystery every time. Every time I circled, I wasn’t sure I was going to see it again” he said. 

He started descending in his circle. A long slow series of spirals, keeping an eye out for that flash every time. And finally, he got close enough to see the crumpled, polished aluminum. 

He pushed a button, marking the GPS coordinates, flew back up and headed toward Gustavus. He got cell phone reception over the Brady Glacier and called flight service and told them to call Eric Main, a helicopter pilot at Temsco. 

He also called Mike Wright, Sam’s son. The signal was bad – but Olson said he managed to get across that he’d found the wreckage.

Eric Main, the Juneau-based manager at Temsco Helicopters, got into the air that afternoon in an Airbus350 to verify it. 

The helicopter has a distinct advantage in this situation because the spot of the accident site is very essentially on the side of a mountain and something of a bowl. Olson has to maintain some kind of airspeed, so he can only get so low. 

Main in his helicopter can hover. He said he could have landed, but to do that they’d have had to have prior permission from the National Park Service. 

So he hovered within 10 to 20 feet looking at pieces of debris and taking pictures. 

“We started finding pieces that were obviously aircraft aluminum of that color,” he said. “We found some a bit later that had markings that more or less identified that it was that aircraft.” 

Olson said when he found the wreckage, he fell apart emotionally. 

“There it was. It happened. Everything else was just speculation,” he said. 

In that moment, Olson said he was finally able to let go of Wright, Munich, and Hutchins. Or, at least, the idea that they might still be alive and need help. 

“We don’t let go until we know,” he said. “That’s why, you know, that’s why there’s all these – like families are always – if they’ve lost somebody they just go through crazy attempts to get verification. You want to know because otherwise they might be alive.”

In that crumpled piece of aluminum, Olson saw the finality of what had happened. 

“Like, all this data was correct. This is bad. This is done,” he said. “It’s a bad scene, but they’re not anywhere else. There’s closure for sure for everybody. But, it’s – there’s also a huge void. My god, these guys were upper echelon pilots and Tanya, too, was – you know – just all good, good people.”

There will be a Celebration of Life in Haines for Sam Wright on August 24 at the Chilkat Center for the Arts at 1 p.m., a reception at 2 p.m. and a cannon blast at 4 p.m.

Yacht that sank off Sicily was carrying people celebrating UK tech magnate’s acquittal on fraud charges

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Police divers resumed searching Tuesday for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in deep seas off Sicily, including a British tech magnate who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who had defended him at trial.

The resting place of their sailboat is some 50 meters (164 feet) underwater off Porticello — a depth that required special precautions that complicated the work: Recovery crews said they were working in 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed down their efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the majestic, illuminated 75-meter (266-foot) mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappear over the course of a minute.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body has been recovered, identified by officials as the Antiguan-born on-board chef. The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

“It’s a great, great tragedy,” said Britain’s ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn, who visited Porticello on Tuesday. Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship and British citizens were among the missing.

Fire rescue officials have said the six other passengers will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage. They include the tycoon Mike Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology and was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

Also unaccounted for are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s lawyers, and Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch’s defense.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the 15 survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, said he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

“A moment later, she was gone,” he said. “They said they went flat on the water and were sunk in two minutes,” Borner added, quoting the survivors.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialized cave divers, worked Tuesday to open up access points to get inside the wreck, which lies at a depth far beyond what most recreational divers are certified to reach. They were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search.

The divers have not yet been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven’t verified their presence there through portholes.

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany’s coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space divers have to maneuver.

“That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight,” he said.

The outing was intended at least in part as a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal and a “looking forward to what was coming next,” said Reid Weingarten, a Washington attorney and a member of Lynch’s defense team who was not on the yacht.

“A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then of course this happened,” Weingarten said.

Some of the people who stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal were on board, including Morvillo, the lawyer, who Weingarten worked with and said “was like a brother.”

Morvillo’s wife, Neda, is also missing, according to his law firm Clifford Chance.

Aki Hussain, CEO of international insurer Hiscox Group, where Bloomer, the witness, was chairman, said the company was “deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.”

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” he added.

Charlotte Golunski, who survived the disaster, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, as did Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. Hannah Lynch, reportedly the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, is among the missing.

The yacht’s registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., according to online maritime database Equasis. Bacares is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

Its name, Bayesian, may be a reference to “Bayesian Inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Lynch’s company.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it had been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and was notable for its massive 75-meter-tall (246-foot-tall) aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The coast guard said to date there was no trace of fuel leaks from the wreckage.

In an unrelated event, Lynch’s co-defendant in the Autonomy trial who was also cleared, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, said Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg.
