Denmark's oldest jazz festival

Since the beginning in 1966, Denmark’s oldest jazz festival has been an extremely popular event with a truly unique atmosphere. The city simply  breathes jazz for 5 days. With swinging parades in the streets, open air stages in the town squares, concerts in nearly every café and on the water, restaurant and venue in town, you won't be able to escape it - but why would you?

If you want to experience the ultimate Riverboat Jazz feeling, you should book a ticket to one of the sailing concerts on board " Hjejlen " - the world's oldest working steamboat - or one of its siblings.

Riverboat Jazz Festival

Since the Riverboat Jazz Festival started in 1966 with three small passenger boats sailing on a 2 hour sailing tour of Gudenåen, the festival has grown into an event of great volume in both quality and scope.

Since the end of the 1980s, where the festival got its international flair, it has become one of Northern Europe's biggest jazz festivals for classical jazz.

More than 70 orchestras / soloists perform for about 50,000 jazz fans over the 5 days the festival lasts. Riverboat Jazz Festivals musical profile is still the classic jazz, like New Orleans and Dixieland Jazz, swing and mainstream, but in recent years there has also been room for renewal with national and international younger jazz and young talents.

Three large tents each with space for 1000-1500 people, many eateries and bars in the city center, streets and back yard resounding with infectious jazz - and most of them are free!

This is made possible, due to the three main partners: Silkeborg Kommune, Tuborg and Nordea Foundation as well as a large number of companies and organizations that, through their sponsorship and partnership, help secure the festival's economy.

The rest of the economy is ensured by the public by supporting the bars in the tents and on the boats. The festival is run by a board, as well as by employees at the festival office that deals with planning, booking and a number of practical things that precedes a festival.

The festival office also organizes the work at the festival for the 350 volunteers, making the entire project possible The festival always takes place on the first weekend of the summer school summer holiday and is a musical gem in one of Denmark's most beautiful cities.

The Riverboat Festival – a musical gem in Denmark’s Lakeland district If you say Silkeborg, you will inevitably also have to say beautiful lakeland scenery. The lakes are an integral part of life of the town located in the middle of Jutland, just West of Århus. Silkeborg is The town by the lakes, and the lakes have inspired the locals to many events throughout the times, one of them being the Riverboat Jazz Festival. Apart from being Denmark’s oldest jazz festival, it has grown into being one of Northern Europe’s largest festivals for traditional jazz: New Orleans, Dixieland, and Swing jazz. In recent years, however, the festival has also introduced modern jazz and young talents.

Inspiration from the Thames Since the 60-ties, jazz and jazz clubs have been part of Silkeborg’s cultural life. One of the people behind the concerts then went on a trip to London and experienced a musical cruise on the Thames in true Mississippi style... Almost immediately the idea came: If you can play New Orleans jazz on the Thames, then why not on the local river Gudenåen, where river steamers were already running regularly. Shortly after, they got started, and during the initial years, the Riverboat Jazz Festival took part on the three river steamers, that sailed on the lakes at that time.

From local to international Throughout the years, the festival has constantly grown. At the beginning everything took place on ships in the water, but the amount of bands and festival-goers grew in numbers. The festival started taking churches, music venues, bars and restaurants into use, tents were put up, and other creative, ideas for venues developed. During the first 20 years, only Danish bands played, but since 1986, the festival can call itself international. Every year they have been able to attract internationally renowned orchestras and soloists, and the annual amount of highlights have increased.

The popularity of the festival, both among artists and visitors show, that people will travel far to experience this event. Year by year, the amount of orchestras and soloists has grown to number 70-80 ensembles, that have an audience of 40.-50.000 during the five days of the festival. The festival can be enjoyed free of charge, and many volunteers and sponsors make an enormous contribution to making the festival a success every year. All events are free of charge and can be reached within walking distance in the city.

Well, Silkeborg is buzzing of events throughout Spring and Summer: Experience some of the greatest Danish musicians at Silkeborg’s rockfestival Nye Hede Rytmer - hot rhythms. The festival is held at Indelukket by the lakes. The woodlands by Silkeborg Spa are swarming with freedom fighters, German soldiers and officers, English soldiers - in fact all the characters you could have encountered at the spa during and just after the German Occupation - at the annual Bunker by Night . During the second part of World War II, Silkeborg Spa was taken into use as German military headquarters. You can also pay a visit to the Country Music Festival offering a variety of Danish and foreign country singers and bands. This festival is held at the openair stage by Indelukket. Are you the nostalgic type and into classical, old cars, the place to go is Automania . Here you can get a good look at sports cars and perhaps the car you remember your Granddad driving once.   Open studio doors where a broad range of artists in Silkeborg and its environs invite the public to come and visit their studios. Here you will get a unique opportunity to see how the works of art are created -and you might find a piece of art, that you would like to bring home.

Riverboat Jazz Festival

Festivalen foregår på Silkeborg søerne og Gudenåen, hvor der er mulighed for de traditionsrige sejladser med Hjejlebådene med jazzorkestre ombord. Festivalen foregår også i byens centrum, på torve og gader, på restauranter og værtshuse, i kirker, på spillestedet RAMPELYS, i tre store telte placeret centralt i byen, samt i Kedelhuset, Car Lounge og i Jysk Musikteater på Papirfabrikken. Alt inden for gå-afstand fra centrum.

De fleste koncerter er gratis, men til enkelte særlige koncerter skal der købes billet.

Jazz for alle aldre

Festivalen inviterer også små jazzhoveder og hele familien til at træde ind i jazz'ens verden, når børnejazz-orkestre spiller op til leg i festivalens børneområde "Jazzland".

The world of jazz in Denmark

S ilkeborg in Denmark transforms into a jazz hub in the last week of June, when thousands of people flock to the city to hear more than 160 jazz concerts spread out across stages in the city, on riverboats and in cafés, bars and restaurants. The Riverboat Jazz Festival has, since 1966, been giving its many visitors a taste of jazz, with old and young enjoying the many, mostly free, concerts.

The festival brings together the best of jazz, with acts travelling in from across the world, including Cuba, the US, Spain, Sweden and, of course, Denmark. There are smaller, intimate concerts in some of the city’s cafés, while some of the big stages gather hundreds of people. Over the course of the five days, more than 60,000 people will visit Silkeborg to listen to jazz.

“It’s an amazing festival in the sense that the whole city is really behind it. The city comes to life during the week, and at every corner there are things happening and people enjoying themselves. We’ve always focused on the fact that it should be a festival for everyone, with easy access for both young and old,” explains Trine Valentin, festival manager.

Getting involved

Out of around 160 concerts, 130 are free. The ones that are not, often sell out quickly, including the original riverboat jazz cruises that sail through Silkeborg. This year, there will also be a Jazzland, where children can enjoy some slightly more funky and interactive jazz and get a feel for the music genre.

“The festival is about getting people involved in jazz. Everything’s allowed in jazz, which is also what makes it amazing, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy at the festival. It’s really a time for just pure enjoyment of life,” says Valentin.

Riverboat Jazz Festival is one of the best places to explore more about the infamous genre of music, and where young and old, aficionado and newbie can stand side by side and have an amazing jazz experience.

From stride to swing, from broadway to hollywood...on two pianos, sunday, october 13 2024 , 7:00pm, stephanie trick & paolo alderighi, “blending impeccable technique and mature musicality with humor and showmanship, they are considered the most engaging piano duo dedicated to the repertoire of classic jazz.”, “i love to hear stephanie and paolo together. they are an inspiration. such sympatico such back-and-forth individually they are marvelous musicians—we’ve known that, but together they play 4-handed stride as it’s never been done. brava, bravo”   – dick hyman, pioneers in the use of four-hands piano in jazz,  stephanie trick  and  paolo alderighi  have earned widespread success with their arrangements of classics from the stride piano, ragtime, and boogie woogie traditions, as well as from the swing era. in recent projects, they have focused on the repertoire of the golden age of broadway and hollywood, as the songs written for the musicals of the stage and screen represent a high point of creative ferment in american popular music., the piano duo has performed in a variety of venues across the united states, europe, japan, israel, and australia   (including the gilmore keyboard festival, jazz at filoli, the musical instrument museum in phoenix, the kobe jazz street festival in japan, the london jazz festival, the edinburgh jazz & blues festival, the ascona jazz festival in switzerland, the silkeborg riverboat jazz festival in denmark, the bohém ragtime & jazz festival in hungary, the milan conservatory, teatro dal verme milano, jazzland in vienna, and the jazz bistro in toronto), winning the acclaim of critics and fans alike.   stephanie trick (from st. louis), a leading exponent of stride piano, and paolo alderighi (from milan), one of italy’s foremost jazz pianists, met at a piano festival in switzerland in 2008. soon after, they started to collaborate on a four-hands piano project and have recorded six albums together. trick and alderighi explored the formula of four-hands duets on one piano, rarely used in jazz, in their first two albums,   two for one  (2012) and  sentimental journey  (2014) (the latter album was awarded the  prix piano  by the hot club of france). their partnership continued with  double trio live 2015  and  double trio always  (2016), recorded in the piano trio setting, but with two pianists instead of one. in 2018, they released their first album on two pianos,  broadway and more . their latest project is a double album,  i love erroll, i love james p.  (2020), and it features the compositions of two legendary figures of jazz piano, erroll garner and james p. johnson.   trick and alderighi’s touring schedule includes performances in schools and universities, as they believe in the importance of educational outreach. their programs range from lectures and concert lessons to master classes for students of all ages, with a focus on various topics, such as “a short history of the piano,” “intersections of jazz and classical music,” “early american popular music and the birth of jazz,” “women in ragtime and jazz,” “musical improvisation,” “blues and boogie woogie,” “ragtime and stride piano,” and “how to appreciate jazz.”    both stephanie trick and paolo alderighi have a background in classical piano. trick graduated  cum laude   from the university of chicago with a bachelor of arts in music. alderighi has a degree in piano performance from the giuseppe verdi conservatory in milan, italy, and also graduated  cum laude  from bocconi university in management of arts, culture and communication. since 2008, he has been teaching a course at bocconi entitled “critical approaches to the arts - music and society.”   they have worked with a variety of institutions, including the following: the eastman school of music, the university of mississippi, the colburn school (los angeles), the university of santa barbara, syracuse university, tri-north middle school and templeton elementary school (bloomington, indiana), tokyo nihon university, the tel aviv museum of art, bocconi university (milan), and others., thanks to jackson pianos for graciously sponsoring stephanie and paolo's appearance..

Do i need to print my ticket confirmation email.

No, you do not need to have a hard copy of your ticket confirmation email in hand. You will give your name at the door.

What is your refund policy?

Refunds and exchanges: We do not issue refunds on tickets. Tickets are a buy-at-your-own-risk item. Please keep this in mind when making your purchase. If you are not able to attend and wish to give your tickets to someone you know, you can transfer your tickets by calling the Box Office at 314-256-1745 or emailing us at [email protected]. In the event of postponement, cancellation, or rescheduling of the show, we are happy to offer refunds if you are unable to attend the new date. If you choose to continue to hold your tickets when we reschedule the performance, your tickets will automatically be transferred to the new date and you will be notified of the change via email.

Bad weather: We do not issue refunds or exchanges on tickets due to inclement weather.

Changes or cancellations: Performance names, dates and times are subject to change or cancellation. The Box Office will contact you with any changes to the event and review options as necessary.

Can I sit with my friends or add guests to my table?

Yes, we can accommodate groups of up to 8 people at a table. If you are buying tickets separately, please write the name(s) of the people you would like to sit with in the comments section during the checkout process online. If you need to make changes, please call the Box Office at 314-256-1745 or email us at [email protected].

What is Premium Seating?

Premium Seating guarantees you a table closest to the stage (within the first 5 rows). Please note that Premium Seating is not available for every show.

Can I request a specific table at your venue?

No. Your table assignment will be given to you by the host/hostess when you arrive. There is often a better opportunity to choose your table location the earlier you arrive.

Will other guests that I don’t know be seated at my table?

We do our absolute best to sit you at a table with only guests who are in your party. If a show is sold out, we may seat two parties together.

Do I have to pay the ticket fees if I purchase my tickets in person?

No. If you come to our venue to purchase tickets, you will not pay the ticket fees. Our box office is open Wednesday through Sunday, 6pm-9pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the show depending on ticket availability.

What time do doors open?

Please check your ticket confirmation email to confirm what time the doors open for your show. Most of our shows begin at 7:30pm, with doors opening at 6pm.

Do I need to make a dinner reservation?

If you have purchased tickets to a show, you may come in anytime after the doors open to have dinner. In the last step of the checkout process online, you may choose a dinner reservation time. This helps our staff to plan accordingly. Dinner and drinks are served before and during the show.

Do you have a food and drink minimum?

Yes. We have a $15 minimum (per guest) that can be met by purchasing food and/or drinks. Please take a look at our menu .

Can I see the stage from the bar?

Yes, all of our bar seats have a view of the stage.

Can I order dinner at the bar?

Yes, you may order food if you are seated at the bar.

What is parking like?

There is plenty of street parking (with no meters) available near Blue Strawberry.

What is your dress code?

We do not enforce a dress code. Business casual attire is typical.

Where should I stay if I am coming from out of town to see a show?

We have a special rate with Home2 Suites by Hilton which is less than a 5-minute drive from our venue. Please click here to book with the special rate.

Is your venue 21+?

We are an all ages venue. Children are allowed but some performances may not be appropriate for young children due to content concerns. If there is an age restriction for a show, it will be clearly outlined in the show description on our website.
