From the mouths of our very own Yacht Week veterans, we have collated a list of Yacht Week hotspots and activities that you won't find on google maps.

Poros - Greece

Hike to the clock tower - If you are looking for a view of the terracotta-roofed houses, Poros is the place. Wake up early and walking through the small town of Poros. The town is a labyrinth of narrow stone-paved streets, packed with quaint shops, traditional tavernas, and cosy cafes. Before the sun is beaming down on you, walk up the hill to the church and clock tower at the top and get many views for the price of one. 

Lemon forest - This renowned  lemon forest  - the only one in Greece - is situated opposite the port of Poros on the shores of the Peloponnese (which is accessible via a short boat ride). In May, the whole town of Poros is engulfed in the heavenly scent of citrus. The Lemon Tree Forest (Lemonodasos in Greek) was immortalized in Kosmas Politis' 1930 story of the same name, which captured its unique atmosphere. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it significantly contributed to the flourishing of the local economy, as Poros exported large quantities of lemons. Today, the Lemon Forest is made up of hundreds of small orchards, some of which are fenced. Though it no longer resembles what Kosmas Politis had described in his story, it is a great place for hiking and great views.

Poseidon Sanctuary - Poros has one attraction for those that love ancient history. Poros possesses one of the largests (though leveled) sanctuaries of the god Poseidon. The story you ask? The larger island of Poros, Kalavria, was offered to Apollo, but as he was more interested in Delphi, he exchanged Poros for Delphi with fellow god Poseidon. For Poseidon a large and beautiful temple was built in 520 BC on one of the higher points of the island. The actual site has stunning views in the direction of Athens and looks down on a rather flat area of which some say was used for sports games in the ancients days. These days you will only find the ruins of what once was Poseidon’s Temple. It is an excellent place for meditation where some say you can still feel the energy of the sanctuary.

Hvar - Croatia

Scooter inside a lavender haze -The Hvar lavender flowers blossom only in early summer, during June and July. Even late May is still too early to see the full lavender in bloom. The main Hvar lavender fields are located around Zastrazisce, Gdinj and Bogomolje, around 15 minutes from the old town. If you have a rental car ready, your best option is to drive there or hire a scooter up the highest point of the island and you will be surrounded by blooming lavender and 360 views. Make sure you capture the moment as this is a spectacle our staff count down the days to see each year.

In case you are more interested in lavender souvenirs – there are tons on local markets and shops, such as at the fresh market in Split – throughout the year.

Dubovica beach - Escape the madness of the tourist heavy streets and beaches. Just 20 minutes away from Hvar town, on the south shore of Hvar island, lies a pebbled beach called Dubovica. With just a few small restaurants and bars, you can really take a second to embrace the calm and the Croatian beauty around you.  It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or to savour the local cuisine, as the restaurant is perched on the beach with a picturesque garden home to fluttering butterflies. The area hosts the clearest sea water and a house of the Kasandrić family from the 18th century. If you're lucky (or not) you'll hear the owner singing opera from his window.

Peka at Konoba Dubokovic  - You cannot go to Croatia without trying Peka. Peka is a very popular traditional method of preparing various specialities across Croatia. It involves roasting the food over open flames using a clay or a wrought-iron baking vessel. Beef, lamb, or even octopus if commonly cooked in this way, which all develop a specific flavour in the process. Meat roasted under the bell is juicy and tender, easily separated from the bone, and is normally accompanied by potatoes that are roasted in the meat juices that give them a distinct flavour. Sit with your favourite people and watch your veggies and meat being made in the traditional way in this gorgeous konoba (Croatian for restaurant). This konoba is settled in the middle of the island in a tiny medieval town called Pitve, elevated above sea level with a distant view of the sea and vineyards. Take a moment to appreciate where you are and the Croatian culture you've just immersed yourself in.

The Yacht Week Greece

A London-based school friend booked a yacht and skipper on The Yacht Week  Greece one February and slowly filled up the nine spaces with friends and friends-of-friends.  After months of excitement we finally arrived on a Saturday in August to meet Richard, our skipper from Sweden and boarded the ‘Galene’ for the first time at Lavrio Marina. We stayed in the port the first night (despite prior communications saying we’d sail that afternoon) and went to Aqua Bar. It was a far bigger night than anticipated and shots kept arriving courtesy of fellow sailors.

We were the first kiwi boat of the summer. Other crews were from the USA, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland and the UAE.

Our first stop on the Yacht Week Greece (and perhaps my favourite) was Poros . We went for a walk and had pistachio ice cream and browsed the shops. Later we caught water taxi to ‘Love Bay’ for a swim at the beach before returning to where we’d docked for a Greek dinner at a local restaurant. Greek Salads, Calamari and Honey coated fried feta quickly became food staples for our trip. Most of our boat was still hung over from the night before so few of us stayed out late.

At Ermioni , our second port we spent a lot of the afternoon jumping off the boat and attended a ‘day party’ (it started at 5.30pm) with table service. We got a bottle of Vodka and made a punch and (those of us still standing at 9pm) ate an amazing meal at a local restaurant.

On the way to Plaka on Tuesday we swam in a bay near Paris Hilton’s holiday home and played on inflatable swans. Having seen The Bling Ring  the week prior and realising the girl is known for leaving her door unlocked I wouldn’t have minded swimming to shore.

Once we reached Plaka we took part in a Volleyball tournament (eliminated first round, competition was tough) we jumped off some rocks as we’d seen local children doing and then attended a dinner at a long table set for 150. It was also Hana’s birthday so there was cake!

Dhokos is a natural bay with no buildings meaning this was the only night we didn’t go out for dinner. All 15 boats were anchored and tied up to each other and we boat hopped and floated in the water on lilos and inflatables in shapes such as swans, dinosaurs and paddling pools.

Our final stop, Hydra , was a packed port with tourist prices. It was home at some point in time to The Rolling Stones, Leonard Cohen and The Onassis Family. Having been voted one of the top five crews of the week we were invited to cocktails at Sunset bar at sunset (fittingly).

After a rough 5 hour sail we arrived back at Lavrio for our final night. We attended a pool party at a bar and bought a fair few of the rings sold at a street stall (7 Euros, 25 Euro’s, “That’s half price for you” at Hydra).

The not so glam no one warned me about when it comes to sailing with a group:

• The toilets and showers on the boat (the place really went to the dogs around day 5)
• Risk of designer sunglasses going overboard
• Lost property – handbags, jewellery, shoes etc. left in bars or on other boats
• People spewing off back of yacht.

My Yacht Week Review: If you’re single and looking to let loose and hook up for a week you’ll love the Greece Yacht Week. If not you may find yourself looking on in a slightly horrified manner for the first day or two but still loving it. Positioning yourself as ‘not afraid to leave the club first’ wins friends later in the week after a few late nights in a row when others would secretly also like to bail early. I’m told The Yacht Week Croatia is even more nuts – 60 to 80 boats compared to the 15 here and crazier parties.

This island is immensely green due to the color of the trees, which from the distance create an exquisite image of its hill connecting with the sea.

Considered by many to be the friendliest yacht destination in Greece as well as having a very rich naval history, dating back to the 18th and 19th century. In the past, Russia had created a shipyard to horde their fleet in order to support Greece during their wars against Turkey. The remains of this dockyard are still present today for visitors to see as well as a very pleasant beach available to enjoy.

3 TOP THINGS TO DO IN POROS

Built in 1922, the clock tower is one of the islands most iconic structures which can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. Standing tall in the center of the island, dominating the surrounding view. A walk from the waterfront to the tower might be more draining than you think, however once you arrive at the top surely the reward will be well worth it. The view is spectacular and an incredible breeze revitalizes and enchants you. This being the reason it is such a popular location for well-known photographers trying to capture the atmosphere and incredible views experienced here.

Don’t forget to take a photo of your sailing yacht while you are at the top! The best time to visit would be during the late afternoon or close to sunset, due to the high temperatures present during the day.

Being close to Athens, one can imagine everything is a little more sophisticated here. This has no effect whatsoever on the relaxed atmosphere and vibe of the island which welcomes you with its colorful gardens and neoclassical buildings. Walk in the main street and watch the yachts mooring along the way, stop and dine in one of the many restraunts available on the seafront (ask your skipper for the best option according to your preferences) and finally return back to town for a fun night out!

Poros is quite lively at night and provides all types of alternatives to enjoy in the evening. For those not interested in fancy party nights, we encourage you to sample a cocktail at one of the many sea view bars or cafes. Taking full advantage of your yacht sailing vacation!

Our general and friendly advice for all our yacht sailing guests is to experience the essence of each location. Meaning that the true spirit and beauty of the islands can be found in the people, food, history and sights which is a much richer experience onboard a yacht. 

Poros has nice flat surfaced roads which allow you to visit most places and take in the aromas of all the natural suroundings. Also, granting accessibility to amazing views and hidden gems scattered around the island.

There are many car and quad rentals available in order to spend half the day driving around getting acquainted with the locals, testing out less mainstream restraunts and possibly discovering some hidden surprises or beaches.

In my opinion, Poros is a wonderful island! It might not be the most traditional of the Saronic islands, however surely the most ideal when visiting by sailing yacht or catamaran. It is truly worth dropping anchor in "Love bay" and spending a night away from the harbor. Offering you the luxury to wake up in a protected bay, surrounded by beauty and taking a morning dive in crystal clear waters!

“Great family sailing experience in the Saronic gulf”

For our first week-long, family sailing-experience in Greece, we had rented a smaller boat ( Oceanic 37 ) from Yachtsailing.gr. with a skipper. As beginners, we were advised to sail in the Saronic gulf instead of the Cyclades, (which can be very windy), which turned out to be an excellent advice. We had a wonderful experience with the boat, the skipper, Panos, who was an excellent skipper and a very good person for us, and with everything concerning booking and arranging the trip. We would highly recommend this company and this trip for families, and we will surely go again.

Beaches worth visiting

Askeli beach.

Considered one of the most popular beaches but better to be visited if you are anchored in the bay. The reason being the large crowds and cars trying to access the beach. So the best way to enjoy the exceptional waters is privately on your yacht, not having to deal with the crowded seashore.

Russian bay

An excellent option to anchor, sit back and relax. Very well protected from the northern winds with exceptional scenary, loads of beautiful pine trees and beautiful serene waters. A truly picturesque bay with historical significance and interest.

As the name depicts this is a very romantic area with emerald waters sitting below hundreds of pine trees! Definitely one of the best beaches while sailing and looking for a revitalizing dive or swim.

Sites worth visiting

Visit the monastery of zoodochos pigi.

Situated near a small canyon surrounded by trees, only 4km from town is a lovely monestary, which was built in 1720. Probably the most significant religious sights on the island. During the Greek Libereation War of 1821 it was of substantial importance. Providing spiritual assistance to the freedom fighters, as well as social and financial aid. All this is said to have provided the support needed to win the war.

Visit the islet ‘Daskaleio’

There is no way you will miss “Daskaleio” as you sail towards the island of Poros. The small islet located in the center of the sea will mesmerize you with its presence. A small white church is located here and covers almost all the surrounding land which is not touching the sea.

Castle of Bourtzi

Built in a stragetic location, covering most of the land on a small islet, this area was used by the locals to supervise the vessels invading Poros from Hydra. Currently, it is only accessible by swimming or boat. So if you are interested, take a quick stop to visit the region.

Local tastes of Poros

Every morning the fishermen of Poros gather in the port to sell their catches from the previous evening. If one of our cooks is present onboard, we encourage asking them to select the type of fish you desire and have it prepared with our own unique recipes. Proving to be a perfect lunch alternative, away from the harbor and relaxing privately in beautiful surroundings.

Citrus fruits

With so many trees and natural scenery everywhere its hard to imagine Poros having a lack of fresh fruit available. Citrous fruits are indigenous to the island and present in juices served by many cafes and restaurants in town. There is also a wide selection of other delicious fruits available to pick from.

Meanwhile, another Sanlorenzo brand, Bluegame made headlines recently by successfully launching their first Bluegame Hydrogen (BGH) zero-emission, hydrogen-powered chase boat they developed and built for the New York Yacht Club American Magic team to use in the 37th edition of the America's Cup that’s just getting underway in Barcelona this week.

ROME – British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m. A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.
