The award winning 59.4m motor yacht Vive la Vie was delivered to her owners in 2008 by German shipyard Lurssen . Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Lurssen, while Art Line is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 11.1m beam and a 3.5m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 1,277 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in mid 2006 with the keel laid under the project name 'Bounty Hunter'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of Vive la Vie is defined by its displacement hull configuration and raked bow. The yacht's hull is constructed from durable steel, while the superstructure is made from lightweight aluminum. Both the hull and superstructure are painted white, creating a cohesive and clean appearance. The boot top and the area below the waterline are painted black, providing a sharp contrast to the white exterior. The design is straightforward, focusing on functionality and durability.

Vive la Vie is equipped with a large sundeck featuring a spacious Jacuzzi and multiple loungers. The aft section of the lower deck serves a dual purpose. It stores two tenders which can be launched by crane through the large side shell doors. Additionally, the enlarged aft platform functions as a bathing platform with a conveniently hidden shower in the back door. 

When the yacht is at anchor, tenders and various watersports toys can be deployed from the side garage. This practical feature enhances the onboard experience by providing easy access to water activities.

A multi-functional passarelle with an integrated lifting device is capable of handling two motorbikes that can be stored in the tender garage, further underlining the yacht's practical design considerations.

Interior Design

Upon entering the main foyer, the staircase stands out as a primary feature, constructed with woven steel grills and glass bridges, adding a modern touch. The glass elevator in the foyer includes an illuminated sculpture with programmable lighting to match the time of day or desired ambiance.

The main salon is designed in an open layout but has four distinct areas. On the starboard side, a veranda with a raised wooden floor and a ceiling styled in wooden waves creates a relaxing space. The square dining table accommodates casual dining or breakfast for eight. A dedicated TV entertainment area with four lounge chairs provides a comfortable viewing experience. Additionally, a circular seating arrangement in white leather with adjustable backs completes the salon.

Forward of the main foyer, a passageway leads past a powder room to a fitness area that offers external views. Continuing forward, the passageway reaches a raised forward-facing formal dining room. This room features a crocodile leather table with a woven copper element lit from below; the table can be retracted into the ceiling to transform the space into a disco.

Accommodation

Vive la Vie is designed to comfortably accommodate up to 13 guests. The arrangement includes a master suite, a VIP suite, two double guest cabins, and two twin cabins. Each cabin is uniquely styled, featuring magnetic-backed shutters instead of conventional curtains and wire-mesh screens on the windows to diffuse light. 

The master suite features a bed with a high, semi-circular back that can be rotated to face any direction, including towards the private deck accessible through the windows. The master bathroom combines wood, marble, and mosaic tiles, integrating shelving seamlessly for a highly functional space.

She is also capable of carrying up to 15 crew. The crew is well-catered for with good-sized cabins and a dedicated mess area. The interior staircase provides direct access to the bridge and guest areas, facilitating efficient service. Crew facilities include extensive cold storage, a wine store, a laundry with professional-grade washers and dryers, and a well-equipped technical deck.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512 B Dita) 1,977hp engines running at 1835rpm, motor yacht Vive la Vie is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 160,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.

A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. The yacht features a tender garage with storage for a range of toys and accessories. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Vive la Vie also features deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.

How did they do it?

The yacht Vive la Vie's keel was laid on 19 June 2006, and she was completed on 26 June 2008, making the build time almost exactly two years.

Over two decades, the owner had studied yachting magazines, technical literature and observed other yachts. This research allowed him to formulate exactly what he wanted: a yacht that was comfortable, mechanically excellent and capable of anchoring in small harbours worldwide.

The owner’s journey began with smaller yachts, chartering them & travelling around popular cruising areas. This experience built a solid foundation for understanding what it takes to integrate mechanical elements and living spaces on a yacht.

With the decision made, the project took off in earnest. Lürssen, a shipyard in Germany, was awarded the contract. The interior design was commissioned to Art-line, a Netherlands-based company known for its proven, simple design formulas.

The main challenge? Accommodating the owner’s unique requests while maintaining technical excellence. The owner had a clear brief for his yacht, prioritising smaller, cosy areas over vast sun decks, which required a clever use of acres of glass to create a boundless feeling.

The Build Process

Lürssen and Art-line worked tirelessly to meet the exacting standards set by the owner. The technical floor plan was essentially thrown away and rewritten to avoid long corridors & conventional layouts. This approach ensured the yacht would be a pure reflection of the owner's dream.

Unique Features Inside & Out

One standout feature is the Sky Bar, which replaced the customary gym or dining area on the top deck. The Sky Bar is a light and airy space that transitions seamlessly from a daytime relaxation spot to a lively cocktail bar at night.

The interior, designed by Art-line, is devoid of long corridors. Instead, sight lines are broken up by a wave effect, hiding the mechanics & making the interior an exciting journey. The main deck saloon is a bright, invigorating space with huge windows & a raised interior veranda.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the most challenging aspects was fitting all mechanical elements while preserving the look and comfort of the yacht. Art-line had to rethink the typical floor plan.

The technical deck, a proven arrangement by Lürssen, was kept largely unchanged, so all necessary facilities were on one level. The aft garage, with side-opening doors, houses two tenders & even custom beds for the owner’s BMW bikes.
