The Yacht-Master debuted in 1992 with a name that had been trialed and prototyped in the late 1960s. It was the first new model introduced by Rolex since the Daytona in 1964 and the nautical-inspired watch has since assumed a position among the world’s most luxurious timepieces.

A Brief History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

Considerable attention was paid to the original Rolex Yacht-Master (ref. 16628) at launch as Rolex enthusiasts debated its similarities to the Submariner. The 40mm Rolex Yacht-Master gold case was outfitted with a gold Oyster bracelet and the line’s signature bezel – a brushed, bi-directional rotating ring carrying high-polish numbers and markings. It was water resistant to 100 meters despite the use of the same Triplock crown found on the Submariner.

While the Sub was ideal for underwater exploration at depths of 300 meters, the Yacht-Master was perfectly comfortable enjoying the view from the deck of a luxury yacht. Rolex’s automatic calibre 3135 movement powered the Mercedes hands and date. Gold 35mm and 29mm versions, including a blue-dial variant, were introduced in 1994.

In 1999, the 40mm Rolesium model (ref. 16622) combined a steel case with a platinum sandblast bezel, catapulting the Yacht-Master to the top of many Rolex enthusiasts' list of must-have watches. Its monochromatic palate served as a perfect canvas for the varied textures, polishes and lines carried through the bezel, case and Oyster bracelet. It was considered a more versatile design that contrasted well with the flashier yellow gold and two-tone Rolesor versions.

Rolex released several subsequent variations of the Yacht-Master featuring new dial colors and materials. Standouts include:

• The 2005 40mm Rolesor (ref. 16623) which complemented the existing 29mm and 35mm versions
• A blue dial Rolesium (ref.116622)
• Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

Rolex also reconfigured the Yacht-Master’s case sizes, which today include 42mm, 40mm and 37mm options. The current lineup of Yacht-Master sailing watches features a beautiful 42mm white gold version with a black dial and ref. 116655) ( ref.226659) and the dark rhodium dial with subtle blue highlights on the Rolesium (ref.126622). Also included is the 44mm Yacht-Master II, which debuted in 2007 as a professional sailor’s tool watch. The YM II features an innovative programmable countdown timer controlled by the Ring Command bezel. While it shares the collection’s name, its design and integrated technology differentiate the YM II Chronograph from all other Yacht-Masters.

Watchmaker’s Perspective

Throughout its history, a large number of Rolex Yacht-Master watches used the reliable Caliber 3135 movement. Watchmakers agree that the Caliber 3135 is one of the most successful movements Rolex has ever produced. That success was not just luck—Rolex made many innovations with this movement that led to its widespread popularity.

One of those innovations was the use of screw-nuts on the balance bridge for adjusting endshake of the balance wheel. Endshake is a watchmaking-specific term that relates to the vertical freedom that a wheel has between its jewel bearings. Too little endshake and the wheel will be held too tightly, increasing friction. Too much endshake and the wheel may lose engagement or malfunction in other ways.

Adjusting the endshake of a balance wheel is especially difficult, as the balance wheel is a much more complex component than a simple wheel (gear). This usually involves completely removing the balance wheel from its bridge and using a micrometric tool to make the adjustment—time consuming, to say the least. Getting the perfect amount of endshake will result in better iscochronal performance of the watch, and the screw-nuts in Caliber 3135 make it straightforward to make that adjustment. These screw-nuts on the Caliber 3135 used inside the Rolex Yacht-Master are a welcome improvement for all watchmakers.

Worker dies in a lathe accident

Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan, Russia – November 2020. A 65-year-old worker died at the KAMAZ PJSC factory when he got caught in a spinning lathe machine. The incident was investigated by the Investigative Committee for the Republic of Tatarstan. No further info.

Lathes are exceptionally useful for cutting metal or wood, but if used improperly they can be incredibly dangerous. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the most common injuries caused by lathe accidents are broken fingers, cuts to the hands and hot shrapnel in the eyes. When using a lathe, it’s important to take safety precautions such as wearing proper clothing, maintaining the proper speed and practicing safe cutting techniques.

Points to consider

• Lathes can easily catch long sleeves and loose clothing and become incredibly dangerous.
• Correct dress is important, remove rings and watches, roll sleeves above elbows.
• Avoid reaching across the rotating chuck or work piece.
• Always stop the lathe before making adjustments.
• Always wear protective eye protection.

April 22, 2016 - Haier, the world's No. 1 major appliance brand, launched its first Russian refrigerator plant in Kamsky industrial park (KIP) "Master", Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan. The opening ceremony was attended by the Russian Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy of Federal District along the Volga River Bank Babic, President of Tatarstan Republic Minnihanov, Mayor of Naberezhnye Chelny Magdeev, representatives of related ministries and state authorities from Russia and China, Haier Group managers and employees.

''The fact that the region has attracted a global investor like Haier is the result of fruitful and intensive work done by both parts'', said the President of Tatarstan Republic Rustam Minnihanov. ''This new manufacturing base is the first major Russian-Chinese project in a non-energy area. We are very proud that we managed to create all the necessary conditions in the region to attract such hi-tech companies as Haier.''    

Being one of the world leaders in user-driven solutions specialising in home appliances, conditioning solutions, and consumer electronics, Haier has been pioneering the creation of a new territory of advanced socio-economic development (ADT) in Naberezhnye Chelny. Out of the four similar development territories in Russia, this territory was the first to start functioning in January 2016.

''Innovation and cutting-edge technologies are the genes of Haier's global strategy '' , said the Rotating President of Haier Group Liang Haishan. ''This gene is present in all our activities, be it manufacturing, developing industrial technologies, or making management solutions. We are happy that people here share our approach. Tatarstan is one of the most prospective Russian regions in terms of economic development, technologies, and innovations.''

The amount of money that have already been invested in the factory construction – $ 39,108,800.00, with $ 330,350,000.00 rubles spent on the technological improvement at the automate-turning department of KIP Master. From April to June 2016 the remaining part in the amount of $15,891,200.00 will be invested in the purchase of components and production development. Therefore, the total number of investment will amount $ 55,000,000.00.

Besides of financial investments Haier Group brings along in Tatarstan a unique production model and innovation technology wich yet has no analogs in Russia. The company creates new jobs and conveys its best practices to new employees. Thus, in 2015, the specialists from Naberezhnye Chelny had undergone a training at Haier factories in Shandong province, China and now back to put their knowledge into practice at the new factory. By 2017, there will be 500 people working on the Haier factory, 1200 jobs more to be created by outsourcing. Today there are already 248 employed by Haier in Naberezhnye Chelny. Furthermore, the establishment of the industrial park will allow Haier to deliver quality products and services to Russia and its neighboring countries, thus meeting various demands of users there.

With quality being the company's priority, Haier implements special flaw-minimizing technologies at all production stages from manufacturing to assembly and packaging. Haier regularly audits its products and the Traceability technology helps to follow goods and components during all the way, from production to customer. Moreover, Haier has built two laboratories in Naberezhye Chelny, one to check the quality of the products and the other to develop innovative technologies. 

With a whole range of optimizing solutions at a new industrial site, Haier has equipped its products with exceptional characteristics. For example, more durable, impact- and crack-proof materials, U-shap technology inside panels and fridge cover, lower compressor noise due to metallic fridge panel and foam-placed condenser.

''Furthermore, Haier has given up using a water-polluting painting technology , having opted for an environmentally-friendly and aesthetically agreeable coated metal'', adds the Marketing Director of Haier Russia Sergey Fomichev. ''The company is very considerate to environmental issues and constantly improves manufacturing processes trying to minimize water consumption and the release of carbon dioxide.''

Production capacity in the first stage will be 250,000 units, in the second – 500,000 units. The target markets include Russia and CIS countries as well as some parts of Europe.

The launch of Haier’s refrigerator manufacturing base in Naberezhnye Chelny is another crucial step on Haier’s road to localization in Russia.  Haier corporation has already taken up creation of R&D center at Naberezhnye Chelny.
