Fatcat 4000 feedback.

FatCat owners are varied in their primary use and enviroments but they all have one thing in common - they rave about their boats!

FatCat 4000 (Tiller) - Great Barrier Island

Having a boat-only access property comes with plenty of challenges - the FatCat solved so many of them. The space and stability mean it can be loaded with building supplies, gear and people safely. Added plus is our teens & their mates use it as a pontoon for popping manu's!

Stephen Newman

Great Barrier Island

My world has opened up dramatically going from a 4m alloy dinghy to a FatCat 4000. It's easily tripled in size in terms of comfort, distance I can travel, stability, space, size, height. We do things in this boat we’d never dream of in the other - It’s just so easy. I use the boat for fishing, diving, snorkling. I catch Kingi’s off it.

Richard Jackson

Camo FatCat 4000 Fisherman (Tiller) - Wanaka

Richard bought a camo FatCat 4000 that is used on lake Wanaka and other South Island lakes. He loves the space inside for taking his family and going flyfishing from. “Service that is second to none!” “Exemplary sales and support”

Description

Additional information.

Fatcat2 is still really a prototype boat even though I can show photos of a completed boat. What happened is that the builder, who is in his mid 80's, was taking the prototype to the lake to test when it was damaged in a road accident. It's been repaired but the boat is near Green Bay and it will be next summer before any testing can be done.

Fatcat2 is a cuddy cabin sailer patterned somewhat after a traditional catboat. She's the widest boat I've ever done, proportionally speaking, but lots of boat have been built to these proportions and my my Piccup Pram , which is almost similarly wide, certainly has no difficulties in rough going. The multichine bilges make a big difference and I wouldn't try a serious boat like this with a totally flat bottom. This boat has a short wide cockpit with benches that should be comfy for three adults. The cabin will be nice for a solo camp or a hide-out for two.

fat cat sailboat

The mast is about the same length as the hull and steps in a tabernacle, both features should make for quick rigging. With a crutch or gallows to hold the struck rig you should be able to fold it all down without unhooking all those lines that a gaffer needs. I've seen it done on a Mudhen and it looks like Walter has rigged his Fatcat2 that way. If you look hard at the tabenacle in the photos you might make out that Walter also has rigged a winch to pull the mast up.

fat cat sailboat

This boat is not ballasted. I did some paper studies of its stability which backed up my experiences in boat like this. They are usually most stable at about 20 degrees of heel, which might be the most heel you should sail at normally. Beyond that point the righting moment decreases until it reaches zero at about 50 degrees of heel and she'll go over. I'd expect her to lay high on her side because the rig is buoyant. Most likely you will have to parbuckle her upright with a rope if the leeboard is on the high side of the knocked down boat and out of your reach. I'd expect a rope or transom step will be needed to reboard the boat. The cockpit will take on a small amount of water but I'll bet she'll sail with it. A bucket is the only way to clear that sort of water, those pretty hand pumps being about useless. (Making Fatcat2 self righting in the usual way would mean making the belly twice as deep to float about 400 pounds of ballast, then add a self draining raised cockpit. A very different boat that some might prefer.)

Fatcat2 is built with taped seams and no jigs or lofting required. The plywood bill looks like four sheets of 1/4" plywood, fours sheets of 1/2", and two sheets of 3/4" plywood for a thick bottom.

Update 2009...

Mike Sandell showed up at the 2009 Rend Lake Messabout with what I guess we can call the prototype Fatcat2. Here he is...

fat cat sailboat

Mike wrote...

"I had the first launch of my Fatcat2, named the "Julia L." during the 19th Annual Midwest Messabout at Rend lake in Southern Illinois. This is the sailing report.

The "Julia L." sails very smoothly (at least in calm conditions). Tacking or jiibing was very brisk, and even in light winds I could come about in about five seconds. It was difficult to determine how close-hauled she could sail, as once again the winds were very light and variable. There was little tendency to heel in the light wind conditions that existed.

fat cat sailboat

The polytarp sail was smooth, and required only a bit of tuning to hold a near-perfect shape. Handling the rigging was typical for a gaff-rigged boat, meaning more complicated than a balanced lug, but only during the initial tuning process. Lazy jacks were added the second day to keep the sail out of the cockpit.

Visibility over the cabin was restricted a bit by the raised cabin hatch, but this only blocks the view to 11 o’clock or 1 o’clock, depending upon which tack you are on. Because of the slightly raised bench seats I built, visibility straight forward from either side of the boat is fine.

The cockpit is so comfy that on one occasion I nearly fell asleep at the helm! She does have a wee bit of lee helm, but I think that adjusting the slot in the leeboard guard to allow a more vertical position for the board may cure this. Anyhow, I need to test her out in a wider variety of wind conditions to have a good feel for that aspect of her sailing qualities.

Some moderately brisk winds came up briefly on Sunday morning, and the boat seemed quite speedy in those conditions, although without a GPS I could not measure the speed. I do remember that on Saturday I was slower than the Family Skiff that was out on the lake, but a bit quicker than the Philsboat.

Construction

Construction of the "Julia L." took me a lot longer than it should have- nearly eighteen months. I really should have had the boat completed in time for the 2008 sailing season, but extended business trips and other commitments kept me from the project for long periods of time.

The boat is constructed of ¾" MDO on the bottom, ½" MDO on the bilge panels, foredeck and afterdeck, and ¼" " okume for the sides. Typical home improvement store lumber was used for the framing and rigging. Most of the hardware was purchased from Duckworks, with some coming from the local hardware store.

Assembly was typical stitch and tape, and the bottom of the boat also is armored with a full layer of 6 oz. fiberglass cloth and resin. Paint was a latex acrylic porch paint purchased at Ace Hardware, and the running rigging is all rope purchased at Menards, another home improvement store."

Another great job, Mike, and thanks much!

NOW, I gotta tell you that I sailed a bit with Mike and the boat struck me as being light with a really big sail, so don't skimp on the reef points!

Fat Cat Boats

Does anyone have real world experience with Fat Cat Boats? I'm buying a new boat soon, and I have checked them out some. They seem very well built, excellent attention to detail, and they run very nice. I'm just curious if anyone else has input on them. Price wise, they are in the SCB world (or former SCB world). But I have to admit, I'm very hesitant to slap down close to six figures for a relatively new name, regardless what the warranty is. Warranties are no good if a company goes out of business. For reference, I'm looking at a 21' Manta Ray Sport, or the 25' CB. Both "cat hulls".

I suscribe to this thread

You might wait a bit and see what Shallow Sport does with the SCB rebrand.

This. It's going to be a while till we take orders on them but they are getting all the attention they need.

Hello my name is Rick George. i would like to answer as much of your question as I can. I personally have been designing and Building boats since nineteen seventy six. Most all of my time has been spent in the racing world. From big offshore racing boats with turbines to now back in the Drag Boat world running both a Top Fuel and Top Alchohol hydros . Not to mention that I personally designed along with Dan Elison. Doug Wright and I are also working on several cutting edge big offshore race boats also. We are also about to go and make a run at the Outboard World Record which has not been attempted in thirty plus years. When I left after tooling on the Recon for Eric at SCB . They vast majority of employees followed me to Corpus and have been here since opening day. The rest did come after the closure. I think if we can play at the Top the game in all of these fields building a minimal powered fishing boat is pretty much a Cake Walk. Thanks for your interest in our product. Have A Great Weekend

I appreciate the background info. The boats I've seen look great, and seem to be constructed with a great attention to detail, which I can appreciate. My primary concern is, and with no offense intended, solely to make a large investment in a relatively new brand name. Basically determining how much of a premium a label is worth. I've seen great products fail for a lot of different, and sometimes uncontrollable, reasons. I suppose that can happen to any company, but with a more established company, I'd be much less concerned with resale value, worst case scenario.

So basically, as a supplement, I'm trying to determine interest by other people, as well as any first hand experiences that are out there.

Hi Climax, thanks for posting. I would love to see some reports posted by owners about how your boats perform. Or have some third party post a review of your product. That is something that a lot of us would like to see.

Thanks guys. I fully understand. There are about four full time guides that may chime in or I can connect you with them personally all of which have been in our boats since day one. We also have a long list of tournament fisherman on the build list that would also be willing to talk to you and give you a ride if you would like. Or you can come down and go for a ride on any of the boats on any given day and get the feel first hand. Thanks for your time and consideration. Rick George

fat cat sailboat

Maybe StoutTrout will chime in. He runs the V hull and the cat with lift console. Both are very nice boats. I wouldn't hesitate on buying if I could afford one right now. I'm sure Ryan would be more than willing to give you a ride in either boat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've been trying to find any info on what will become of SCB...can't seem to find anything other than everyone's friend of a friend told them they'll be back to business in no time. Doesn't seem likely to me.

PM sent.

You might want to look at the Southshore Cat...

I ran the 21 and 25....

What was your take?

fat cat sailboat

I've only seen pictures of the fat cats and from what I've seen I'm not impressed. The center consoles look like a complete waste of space. You wanna see with your own eyes ?? Look here in the boating forum and you can see all the pictures you want of the center consoles. But, if your a Ricky Bobby and you want to go fast, the fat cat might be for you. If you want to go fast and have a good fishing rig, well you might want to find a used SCB or order one from Shallow Sport. I can promise you this, the new SS SCB will not be anything less from what SCB was building.

I don't find them ugly as some I suppose. But I'm having a very hard time justifying spending the money on one. I had a friend who bought a Titan boat up in Houston, upstart with racing and high end bay boat roots. Spent a big chunk of change, then the company went under, or stopped building bay boats, or changed their focus or something. He was left kinda high and dry. Ended up selling the boat for a fraction of what he paid. Like Fat Cat, the company didn't even show up in NADA or have enough presence to demand anywhere near what he paid. So even as well polished as they are, they make me nervous as hell. I probably don't have as much money as some of the people on here, so 80k is a big investment for me. I like the cat hulls, but I guess it's a bad time for the market right now. SCB is in limbo, and Fat Cat is just too new to get the money they are asking (from me). My second choices are Haynie and Dargel. Two vastly different boats, but they are both solid with a great name and service record to boot. Just hard to make up my mind...I've read every single forum on here and ridden in both...Lol. Someone pick for me!!!

fat cat sailboat

My last two Haynie's weren't on NADA either.....just a comment.....I knew what they were worth.

fat cat sailboat

How many SCB's do you remember pre-2007/8? There were some out there but a few short years later there were 10 on Sunday beach any given weekend. I guess the difference is they were 50-60k back in '08, even 45k or so when the "sport" came out, and worked their way up to near triple digits by '12/'13. Had they not been bought out by such a large builder, who would be handling those warranties? I understand OP's concern, but if you are selling a well performing boat at an appropriate price, it's going to sell. It will be harder without the name recognition but that's half the Texas boats anyhow (if selling outside of Tx coast). Your Haynie and Dargel backups are more my type, but you likely aren't going to get the same type of performance, at least the speed anyhow. Iirc, fatcat built Chris a very lightweight 24', which started out Eric's attempt at a Vhull, then sold to Haynie, and then made its way to Fatcat and stretched to a 26'. It's been a few years but I believe it was them. My point is I believe they are known in the boating community. See post #4, how involved was the "tooling" in the beloved Recon?

I have the 25 black and red boat that's on the Internet. It's a great boat. Fatcat backs their product. I am trading mine in on a new fatcat as we speak.

I'm curious on all the stats

I saw a property for sale sign on the lot, r they going out of business or moving to new digs????

fat cat sailboat

I heard the owner or manager recently passed away and they are not building any more boats, just doing service now. Not saying it's true we all know how rumors are! Prayers out to em if that's the case... I will say i have done a walk through of their factory and went through a few of their rigs in the past and their fit and finish is some the best i have ever seen. I thought SCB was good until i saw theirs! TS

fat cat sailboat

All that attention to detail comes at a price ... add to it that crazy hydraulic center console they were trying to develop and I think they ran themselves out of cash and business ... .

Fat cats The manager did pass away and I don't know if they are going to build any more boats.

Sad deal that guy knew crazy amounts about hull design

fat cat sailboat

It's sad that knowledge was not passed down. In some companies it's all built around one guys knowledge. In other companies it's a shared knowledge that exist. I've worked in both. Shared knowledge is better for the consumer and the company in the long haul. I can name several other Texas boat companies that are built around one guy. I won't name them because it's too early for popcorn.

Update on the status of Fat Cat Boats. I recently (4 months ago) purchased a CB-21 from Master Marine in San Antonio. So seeing this thread and the recent post had me concerned. So I put a call into Fat Cat Boats yesterday. I got a answering machine saying they were unavailable, but to leave my number and they would get back to me. Today I received a call from the owner, I believe he said his name was John Hern. He told me about the death of his manager, but assured me that Fat Cat boats was moving forward and not going out of business anytime soon. Matter of fact, he said that they were going to be at both the San Antonio and Corpus boat shows.

Good to hear hopefully all the design and molds were done and they can continue. The quality is great on the ones I have seen

So the dude posting here was Rick George (climax on 2cool) apparently he was a big player in the go fast boat world. Sad deal http://www.riverdavesplace.com/foru...eorge-Racing-(Climax-Race-Boats)-28-foot-cat& http://www.screamandfly.com/showthr...o-Climax-Race-Boats-based-out-of-Corpus-Chris

Sweet looking boat. Did you ask them about warranty stuff? I was just thinking about that today. They looked to be very well built the few I looked at.

Fat Cat's Sniper 25, affectionately known as "The Skinny Cat" or "Sniper," features an innovative hull design meticulously engineered for superior performance in skinny waters. Artist Svetlana Petrova Explains The Inspiration Behind Her Fat Cat Art (VIDEO)

Many cat owners are obsessive about their feline friends, but few have immortalized their pets quite like artist Svetlana Petrova. The Russian painter has become an Internet sensation after she placed her cat, Zarathustra, in popular classic paintings, which are now displayed in a gallery in Abingdon, England. Petrova joined HuffPost Live to talk about her art and her famous fat cat.

Petrova explained that her inspiration for this series came after her mother's death.

"That's my mother's cat. My mother died in 2008, and she left me this cat, which she adored. So she spoiled him, that's why he's fat. and now he can't lose his weight. And I got bad depression after her death, and I couldn't work in art anymore," she revealed to host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin . "But then, when my friend told me, 'Why you don't make an art project with your new cat? He's so funny,' I thought maybe I'd make a still life with him, like in a style of Dutch paintings, with food. By chance, I inserted him in another painting that I began."

Her website gallery includes paintings from various eras: ancient Egypt, the Italian Renaissance, the Dutch Masters of the 17th century, 18th-century French masterpieces and famous 19th-century American and Russian works. But whether it's Rembrandt, Titian, da Vinci or Whistler, all feature Zarathustra.

Petrova admitted that she knew her work would likely end up in an exhibition."I'm a professional artist, and I was fond of Internet memes, and I thought maybe I can make an Internet meme who would at the same time [be] a work of art. And I did this."

Catamaran Tours Boat Information

Find out more boat information on our Catamaran Tours by reading our frequently asked questions or contact us for any more information that you cannot find. Here you will learn more about Fat Cat Sail and our catamaran tours and what is included such as food, drink and fun!

What happens if there is bad weather on the day of our catamaran tour?

The weather in Mexico at certain times of the year can be very changeable.  We may get rain for half an hour and before you look round the sun will be back out.  This is what keeps the beautiful country so green.  We keep a close eye on the weather and the ocean conditions.  If we can see from the satellite that there is going to be a lot of rain we will not send you out.  If the ocean conditions are rough, even on a beautiful sunny day, we will not send you out.  We will contact you and give you the option to the reschedule to another day and if this is not possible we will give you a refund of the deposit paid for your charter.  Additional chef services cannot be cancelled but we can arrange for the chef to come to your villa with any additional food ordered.

What are your policies of cancellation?

For cancellations made 14 days or more before the date of your trip we only retain 5% to cover our administration fees.

If you cancel between 6 and 13 days from the date of your departure we will retain 20% of the cost of the total charter.

If the cancellation is made with less than 6 days notice the entire deposit will be retained.

Is the boat child friendly?

Youngsters need careful supervision near water and being on a boat is no exception.  Please just remember that they should wear a life jacket at all times and avoid moving around on board unnecessarily, especially if it gets choppy.  There are plenty of shaded areas and they will have a ball swimming, snorkeling and jumping off the boat when we are anchored.

Can I Bring My Own Alcohol?

Yes, no problem at all.  Please just let us know when you arrive and we will have the crew help carry it to the boat and stow it safely to avoid breakages.

Can We Change On Board?

Yes, we have a cabin where you can change and also 2 bathrooms although they are quite small!

Can We Play Our Own Music?

Yes, this is no problem at all.  Bring along your smart phone and we can connect it for you.  However, many of our guests leave asking for our guides playlist!  They are always happy to share this information.

How Safe are the Catamarans?

The catamarans sailed to Mexico from South Africa so they are ocean going.  We are a family run business and have an excellent reputation for not sending the boats out in poor ocean conditions.  The safety of our guests, crew and our boats in our first priority.

How large and stable is that catamaran?

Each catamaran is 45ft long.  It sailed to Mexico from South Africa so no question that it is an ocean going vessel!  Because it is a catamaran and has a broad base it is very stable in the water.

Can I bring my own snorkeling gear?

Snorkeling in Mexico – If you have equipment you are familiar with please bring it with you.  Just remember to take it home at the end of the tour!

Is transport included?

We include transport on our shared tours but not on charters.  Often guests chartering Fat Cat already have a transport company picking them up at the airport and taking them on other excursions.  We like to give you the flexibility to choose the best option for your group.

Is there bathroom on board?

There are 2 bathrooms onboard our catamaran, so you can feel totally at ease chartering our catamaran

Are there child life vests on board?

Child Friendly Catamaran Charters  – Yes, we are very family friendly and like to encourage youngsters aboard.  We have life jackets for children and infants and snorkel equipment for children too.  Again if they have their favourite mask and fins please let them bring them

What is the size of the boat?

Our catamarans are 45ft long, ocean going Voyage DC450s.

Is there shade on board?

Our catamarans are Voyage DC45 catamarans.  They are specifically  built to accommodate guests who are onboard just for the day with ample seating areas, lots of shade and easy access to two bathrooms.

Will salsa and guacamole be enough food?

On a four hour charter, yes.  Please remember on a morning charter you will have breakfast before you leave your hotel or villa and be back in time for a late lunch.  On an afternoon charter you will have lunch before you join us and be back in time for dinner.  We recommend that you spend the time on boat enjoying the ocean, snorkeling, swimming and sailing.  However, if you would like additional food, and you know your group better than we do, we will be happy to provide you with our additional menu options.

Could It Be Cold?

In the winter if we have a north wind it can get a little fresh in the evening, especially after swimming or if you are taking a sunset charter.  We recommend that you bring a hoodie or sweater during these months.

What’s the minimum age on the Catamarans?

There is no minimum and maximum age everyone is welcome on the Fat Cat Catamarans

What is included the 4 hours boat ride?

Our Standard 4 Hour  Catamaran Tour Includes:

  • 45 minutes of snorkeling on the reef of Inah
  • 30 minutes swimming in the natural swimming pool just south of Puerto
  • Cruising the rest of the time
  • Snorkelling gear
  • Open bar including rum, vodka, beers, soft drinks, juices and water
  • Lunch bag per person including sandwich, crisps / chips, cookies and fresh fruit
  • For private charters salsa, guacamole chips and fruit or lunch bag
  • Other food options available for private charters at additional charge

What should we bring with us for our Catamaran Trip?

Please bring your beach towel, sunscreen (biodegradable if possible please) and a tip for the crew, assuming you feel they have done a good job which we are sure you will they will appreciate the recognition.

How accessible is boarding the catamaran?

Accessible Catamaran Charters  – There is a simple step up from the dock onto the side of the boat to board in the marina.  To get back on the boat after snorkeling there are two strong metal ladders at the back of the boat.  Our crew are also very willing to help less able guests board.

Do you cater for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes, this is no problem at all.  Please just let us know at the time of booking in the comments section and we will get in touch with you to make sure we have something tasty and suitable on board for you
