Kialoa II 1971 Sydney Hobart Dare to Win – Kilroy Family

Historical:

Kialoa II (name derived from a Hawaiian word for ‘long, beautiful canoe’) was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Yacht Dynamics, in Harbor City, California out of aircraft grade aluminum (largest aluminum yacht built in the United States in 1963) for Jim Kilroy.

Jim Kilroy – “a comfortable 12 Meter.” Cruising comfort, regardless of weather conditions for her crew, wife and five children. Forced-draft system, air-conditioned, and useable underway…unknown to most of her racing competitors at this time.

The Class A boat weighs approximately 92,250 lbs / 45,000k, carrying 2,700 square feet of sail area, accommodating a crew of 16, with auxiliary power from an aluminum GM 4-53 130 hp. diesel.

Dynamic’s President Kenneth Watts comments at the time of building Kialoa II – Aluminum shapes and special developmental sections for the racing sloop are being produced by Harvey Aluminum. Built Cheaper “Cost-wise,” said Watts, “we believe aluminum boats can be built cheaper than boats out of wood. The value of a boat like Kilroy’s Kialoa II 20 years from now will be worth a lot more than the money paid for it. “An aluminum boat will not get what we call tired. After 30 years of use, it will be just as rigid and strong as it is today. A wooden boat has a tendency to get sort of lax or hogback, just like a chair. It requires greater upkeep and takes on a musty odor in a few years. “An aluminum boat won’t.

Andrea Francolini @afrancolini

Kialoa II won numerous races on the Eastern and Western seaboard, the Transpacific Race to Hawaii in 1965, the Transatlantic race to Ireland, the Sydney-Hobart in 1971 and many other races. Rigged sometimes as a sloop and sometimes, a yawl, Kialoa II won one of every four races she sailed, and finished on the podium in more than half of them.

When Mr. Kilroy built his third Kialoa, he donated her to the U.S. Coast Guard to be used as a training vessel. In 1978 she was sold by the Coast Guard to a Martin Crowley. After considerable repairs Crowley took her through the Panama Canal to the West Coast. In 1982 she was chartered for the Victoria – Maui race, and was subsequently entered in the Clipper Cup in Hawaii.

Kialoa II was chartered for a while in Maui, and then was brought back to California and put up for sale.

In 1999 Jos Fruytier, a Dutch sailor with a soft spot for historic sailing vessels, flew to Honolulu on Christmas Day and bought her on the spot. A sound hull was one reason that Fruytier decided to point Kialoa’s bow southwest into the South Pacific and begin a 20,000-mile voyage lasting over a year. He flew home periodically to attend to family and business, but eventually delivered Kialoa II to Metur Yachts in Bodrum, Turkey for a full refit, completed in 2003, before continuing to cruise Kialoa II mainly in the Med and northern Europe.

Patrick and Keith Broughton bought the 73’ yawl in 2016 with the view to compete in the classic ocean races as Kialoa II did under Jim Kilroy.

Reviving the Legend of Kialoa

Published on August 3rd, 2017 by Editor -->

It’s been 46 years since the 73-foot Kialoa II took line honours in the 1971 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and when the boat lines up for the 603 nm Rolex Fastnet Race off Cowes in the UK this Sunday, its racing revival will be complete.

Brothers Patrick (AUS) and Keith Broughton (UK) purchased the aluminum warhorse, the second in American Jim Kilroy’s series of maxi racing yachts called Kialoa, in 2016 with the view to compete in the classic ocean races, as Kialoa II did under Kilroy.

They will mark the boat’s racing comeback as one of a record 350 entries in the biennial Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rolex Fastnet Race starting Sunday August 6, 2017. The last time Kialoa II completed the Fastnet Race was in 1969 when she finished runner-up over the line.

A combined Australian and UK crew of 18, including key members of what was once Australia’s most successful maxi yacht team on George Snow’s Brindabella – names like Bob Fraser, Lindsay May and Tony Hearder among the stalwarts – are preparing for the start of the world’s biggest offshore race in a few days’ time.

“We anticipated much of the work but thought we had two to three years to address the issues,” Paddy admitted. “It turned out that there were some fundamental problems that could not wait, including the fact all the sail handling systems from the old days had atrophied to the extent that they were almost completely absent.” The refit also included all the standing and running rigging along with a complete new suit of sails.

Paddy said in the short time of their ownership Kialoa II has shown an amazing capacity to stir fond memories. “We have been approached by some of Mr Kilroy’s crew with anecdotes and hints as to how they used to sail her. His daughter Trice has been helpful with information and contacts and former members of the US Coastguard have been in touch and provided help in a number of areas. ‘I remember seeing her in 19xx’ is a regular conversation starter.”

Since the Kilroy days, Kialoa II has been used as a sail training vessel for the US Coast Guard and cruised extensively under various owners. Now the Broughtons’ journey to re-race the classics is set to begin.

First up is the Rolex Fastnet Race which will be followed by a lengthy delivery sail for the 45 ton boat to Sydney in November to tackle another major bluewater event, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on December 26.

Unlike 1971, when Kialoa II’s waterline length and speed made the Sparkman & Stephens yawl the hot favourite and ultimate Sydney Hobart line honours victor, the boat will stand up on Boxing Day against a fleet of modern 100ft supermaxis and other carbon fibre lightweights.

“What will suit us in the Rolex Fastnet and Sydney Hobart are conditions that allow us to use her waterline length and yet not enable the competition to plane. We shall see; there’s so much to re-learn,” Paddy added.

Background : The 603nm Rolex Fastnet Race is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and just 7 boats sailed in the first race in 1925. The race has been sponsored since 2001 by Rolex SA of Geneva and is legendary within the world of ocean racing. The 47th edition of the biennial race will start off the Royal Yacht Squadron line, Cowes, Isle of Wight on Sunday 6th August 2017. It is the largest offshore race in the world and attracts the most diverse fleet of yachts.

Owen Clarke Performance Yacht Brokerage is pleased to offer a rare opportunity to purchase a classic boat with huge provenance. Kialoa II was one of the first ‘Maxi’ racing yachts. This ocean racing legend was designed in 1963 by Sparkman & Stephens and built in lightweight aluminium for the famous yachtsman Jim Kilroy. She was launched in California in 1964 and became one of the most successful yachts of her time.

From inception she was designed and built to  compete and win the maxi ocean racing category. During her first decade she successfully won most of the major ocean races at least once, including the 1965 Transpac Race.  She came 2  in Fastnet in 1969 and took line honours in the 1971 Sydney-Hobart Race.

The current owners bought the 73’ yawl in 2016 with the view to compete in the classic ocean races as Kialoa II did under original ownership with Jim Kilroy.  They have completed over 40,000 nautical miles and multiple ocean races during their tenure.

She has comfortable accommodation down below with 3 ensuite cabins a well-appointed galley and a spacious saloon. She can sleep up to 12 persons (9 single berths) and races/deliveries with 18 on a 2-watch system.

She would be ideal as an ocean racer or for entry in the numerous classic yacht regattas or alternatively as an adventure yacht to reach the high latitudes and furthest corners of the globe. She has many more years and sea miles to be enjoyed by a new owner.

Roast dinner round the Rock: onboard the iconic Sparkman & Stephens design Kialoa II

The iconic 1963 S&S Kialoa II drew quite a crowd in Plymouth after the Rolex Fastnet Race, we took a tour

kialoa ii sailing yacht

Without question one of the yachts that attracted the most lingering glances on the busy pontoons of Plymouth Yacht Haven at the Rolex Fastnet Race village last week was Kialoa II , the famous 1963 S&S design.

The languid, elegant lines of the 72-footer drew plenty of comments about being ‘a proper yacht’, while experienced racing sailors could often be spotted examining the hefty deck gear and explaining to younger crews how things were done in the days before retractable poles and asymmetrics.

Kialoa II was sailed in the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race by her current owners, brothers Paddy and Keith Broughton. Paddy described the race as an ‘absolute hoot’, with Kialoa’s  long waterline length helping eat up the miles on the upwind early stages before her considerable sail plan, bolstered by a mizzen staysail, saw them fly back from the Rock to finish in just over four days.

“In straight lines she goes fantastically,” commented Broughton. “Where there’s a fetch, and you’ve got a reasonable amount of breeze but not so much that other boats can get up and plane, the waterline line length really comes into its own.

“She leans over a little bit, puts all those beautiful lines in the water all the way from the long bow to the transom and just charges! We were doing steadily 10-11 knots for ours on end and it was wonderful.”

The team included stalwarts from the campaigns such as the famous Aussie maxi Brindabella , including navigator Lindsay May, who has over 40 Sydney-Hobart Races to his name.

Kialoa II was one of the very first aluminium yachts, and was built of aircraft grade metal for legendary owner Jim Kilroy in 1964. She entered most of the major ocean races, as recounted in Kilroy’s famous autobiography, Dare to Win. Victories included winning class in the Transpac Race in 1965, a year after her launch. She was also first home in the punishing 1971 Sydney-Hobart Race, a year which saw the fleet beating for much of the 600-mile course to Tasmania. Her previous attempt at the Fastnet, in 1969, saw her cross the line 2nd, to take 5th overall. Unlike the later  Kialoa yachts,  Kialoa II  also cruised many of the world’s oceans.

Originally a sloop, she was reconfigured with a trim tab and mizzen mast in 1967, and races today with a very similar sail plan arrangement to the days when she would have been skippered by Kilroy.

The Broughtons bought Kialoa II just over a year ago, and have worked on bringing her back to racing spec with experts such as Hugh Welbourn. One of the earliest things they realised on sail trials was that the yacht, which has deep, deep bilges, pitches fiendishly unless sailed with full fuel and water tanks.

Much of the original deck gear remains, including twin two-speed Barient coffee grinder pedestals with foot clutches and a metal chain uphaul on the inboard end of her mighty spinnaker pole.

While the original ‘Magnetron’, a forerunner of today’s microwave ovens, is no longer in the galley, the yacht’s unique gimbaled serving counter remains. It was used to full effect by the Broughtons’ crew, who enjoyed a full roast dinner served from her vintage galley on their trip around the Rock.

They now plan to sail her in some of the classic ocean races that Kilroy competed in, starting with a delivery sail down to Australia for the 2017 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race starting on Boxing Day. The plan is to set off from the UK for Cape Town, before heading across to Albany, Western Australian, letting the 53-year-old design stretch her legs in the southern Indian Ocean. In doing so  Kialoa  II would join an elite group of yachts which have competed in both the Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart Races in the same year on their own keel.

Watch out for a in-depth feature on  Kialoa II in a future issue of Yachting World magazine.

Southern Woodenboat Sailing

To Hobart aboard KIALOA II

By Tim Manion

Readers may recall Herschel Smith’s article in the February edition of SASC News — a tale of four gentlemen on a gentleman’s cruise to Lord Howe Island for the 20th BBQ last November. I won’t recount much of that return voyage except to say that if you had asked me at the 11th hour (out of a total of 36 hours spent lying ahull in a confused Tasman) if I was interested in going offshore again in 2022, the answer would have been an emphatic no .

kialoa ii sailing yacht

KIALOA II sailing in the Sydney- Hobart Classics Regatta last December-Photo John Jeremy

However, spending six days aboard Double Dutch beating/floating into a westerly must have unfortunately stirred the deep masochistic pull of offshore sailing and only seven days later I found myself suited up with the opportunity to race with Kialoa II to Cabbage Tree Island. What followed was champagne sailing. Coming out of Sydney Harbour under the full wardrobe (reaching conditions with the jib, staysail, main, mizzen staysail and mizzen main), followed by a lightning fast reach all the way to Cabbage Tree and back with no swell and clear skies. This offshore business is easy! Somewhere off Terrigal I was also provided an opportunity (at the expense of a patient) to flex my day job in the Emergency Department and put six stitches in the navigator’s leg. A ride to Hobart was offered in lieu of remuneration.

Kialoa II is a true beauty, initially designed as a sloop in 1963 by Sparkman & Stephens for the American yachtsman Jim Kilroy as a part of the decade’s long Kialoa program. A defining feature of Kialoa II was her aluminium construction, a significant step away from the typically wooden construction of her rivals at the time. At 73 ft long, she was one of the first purpose-built ocean racing maxis and toured the globe winning most major ocean races at least once, the most notable of these was perhaps the 1965 Transpac line honours in nine days and 19 hours. After being converted in 1968 to her current yawl configuration, she came to Australia for a single Sydney to Hobart start — a reportedly gruelling upwind race in 1971, taking line honours in three days, 12 hours and 46 minutes.

Jim Kilroy donated Kialoa II to the US Coast Guard in 1973 as he moved his attention towards Kialoa III (the yacht that went on to set the Hobart speed record which stood for 21 years). Kialoa II remained a training vessel until 1978 when she was sold to private owners and maintained as a cruising vessel for close to 40 years.

Her current owners, Paddy and Keith Broughton, bought the yacht in Europe in 2016 with a plan to return her to former racing glory and compete in the classic ocean races as she did under Kilroy. This included maintaining systems as close to original as possible with only two concessions — modern instruments and modern sail technology. They have done a truly incredible job with what was essentially a complete refurbishment of the standing and running rigging, and have since completed the Fastnet, Transpac, and multiple Sydney to Hobarts — beating Kilroy’s time of three days 12 hours on each occasion.

And so, after some further racing in the Sydney to Hobart Classic Yacht Regatta and a few extra training days thrown in, it comes to Boxing Day. A stunning Sydney day with a moderate NE sea breeze and sun for the flotilla of spectators. After an exhausting beat up out of the harbour for us winch monkeys (yes that original technology includes 60-year-old coffee grinders connected to the primaries via a horizontally-laid bike chain — not the most efficient) it was time to pop the kite and rip down the coast. Things remained fairly uneventful for the following 36 hours, as the northerlies continued to build down past Gabo and into the paddock.

What followed was some exciting downwind sailing. With wind speeds of up to 45 knots from behind, simple manoeuvres became all 18 hands on deck and up to 45 minutes of planning and execution just to safely gybe the 45-ton bucking bronco. As seas picked up through Bass Strait a number of helmsmen began to set new boat speed records for Kialoa II (previously at 17 knots) — much to the chagrin of the off-watch owner Paddy. Adding to Paddy’s woes was the third (!) blocked head of the race, which, to his utter credit, was immediately addressed with none of the cursing or carry-on that it probably deserved.

This was all soon to change on the following watch. Unsatisfied with boat speeds of 20 to 21knots, (given the new record is set at 21.7 knots) the skipper lines himself up and holds on with white knuckles as Kialoa II charges down a wave. 23 knots! With a poled-out yankee and a reefed main! The crew rejoices.

Rounding Tasman Island at dawn

With the northerly carrying us across the strait, all attention was on how to address the southerly change expected on the NE coast of Tasmania. Unfortunately for Kialoa II this meant a big soft patch and around two hours of searching for breeze on the afternoon of the 28th. As the front pushed through we didn’t have to look any further as we entered a long night of upwind slogging. There was plenty of work to do in a breeze that was shifting between 20 to high-30 knots on the nose — leading to calls of reef-in, reef-out, reef-in, second reef-in, second reef-out, both reefs out, one reef back in… and so on.

All was forgotten by morning as we were treated to a dawn rounding of Tasman Island, abating winds, a couple of dolphins and maybe even a Bloody Mary (courtesy of the cook Dani Blackmore who kept the entire crew satiated and hydrated throughout). A frustrating morning through Storm Bay was punctuated by some urgent repairs to the new No.1 off Cape Raoul.

Finally rounding the Iron Pot in the early afternoon, we were able to pop the kite and scream up the Derwent on a great fun shy reach. As we approached John Garrow Light it became apparent we may have bitten off a little more than Kialoa II could chew. With the E/NE winds taking us further left, Keith Broughton on the helm pushed the boat to its absolute limit with serious concerns about the safety of the kite and the rigging being shared amongst the bow team. Adding to the excitement was the media boat and a number of spectators in close proximity.

With some great steering aided by expert trim from Chris Harmsen, the rounding was made and Kialoa II was home and hosed. A 4 pm finish not only meant a new course record for Kialoa II of three days, three hours and 15 minutes, but also a primetime drive-by of the Taste of Tasmania festival. The reception in Hobart is legendary and we were not disappointed.

Nothing much happened over the next few days in Hobart... There was a quiet crew lunch at Shippies with a few awards — the Rolex tie going to the Most-Valuable-Player Sandy McWilliams, and the presentation of the preventer pad eye that was ripped out the boom in a certain unintended manoeuvre going to helmsman Rowdy McCullum.

Crew lunch at the legendary Shipwrights Arms Hotel

Another highlight was sharing our arm of the marina with the gaff-rigged beauty Maluka , skippered by Peter Langman to a division win, and another classic S&S 34 Azzurro with Shane Kearns and crew. It was also particularly special to be alongside Currawong , the Currawong 30 sailed two-handed by Kathy Veel and Bridget Canham into Constitution Dock as the midnight fireworks exploded overhead.

On 1 January we were joined by SASC Rear Commodore Chris Manion who joined us for the return delivery which departed on the 2nd. A skeleton crew of eight left at mid-morning, and it soon became apparent that our idyllic delivery of sightseeing and paddle-boarding was not to be. A window of three days in which to beat some heavy weather meant that we were racing back to home in Pittwater. Without dropping anchor, we came home in style under storm gear which went up somewhere off Gerringong, and settled the helm down to allow us to smoothly come around Barrenjoey Head in just over three and a half days.

Kialoa II is certainly a yacht put together by the efforts of its crew. Special mention must go to the legendary Lindsay May, prolonging his record for the most consecutive Hobarts which now stands at 49. Aside from those mentioned throughout the article, special effort was put into safety by Genevieve White, and into preparing the boat by Ian Goldsworthy and Andrew Cutler. The crew was rounded out by the expert bow-team of Jeff Beaton, Richie Snow and Paul Runyan, trimmer Dave Cummins, and my three fellow grinders — the brothers Mallee, Aero and Ek Leplastrier-Lambert. Most thanks, of course, go to owners Paddy and Keith Broughton, and the effort of Mel Broughton in wrangling 1 8 c r e w m e m b e r s a n d spearheading the preparation/ shore team of a big crew.

By the time this article goes to print Kialoa II will hopefully be in Antigua racing in the Classic Yacht Regatta, halfway back to the UK to compete in this year’s 50th Fastnet. It is unknown when she’ll be back to Australian shores, if ever, leaving a bittersweet taste for this historic yacht’s second wind as a racing machine.

kialoa ii sailing yacht

This famous aluminium boat, converted to a yawl in 1968, came from the USA to the race just once - in 1971 - and under her famous owner, Jim Kilroy, took line honours in just over three and a half days. Also took line honours in the 1966 Newport Bermuda and 1966 San Diego Acapulco races, won the 1969 Transatlantic Race from Newport to Cork, finished second on line in the 1969 Fastnet Race and took the double in the on the 1972 Trans-Tasman Race from Hobart to Auckland. Won and placed in many other races. Sydneysider Paddy Broughton bought the yacht in 2016 with his brother Keith, who resides in the UK, where the pair went to school.

Ahead of retracing the classic races the yacht had previously done, the Broughtons replaced the standing and running rigging, added new sails and tested all in the Rolex Fastnet Race. They finished 134 th overall from over 300 entries, and 37 th in a division of 60. Kialoa II was crewed by some of Broughton’s old Brindabella crew mates, including navigator Lindsay May and Tony Hearder – all booked for the Hobart, as is pro photographer, Dallas Kilponen, son of Kilroy’s abiding navigator , the late David ‘Fang’ Kilponen. Broughton was sailing Kialoa II from the UK to Sydney at the time of writing, joining an elite band to have competed in both the Fastnet and Sydney Hobart in the same year delivering to the venues under sail. The crew is supporting Movember and rocking the ‘70s theme by growing moustaches and wearing terry-towelling hats on Boxing Day.

ABOUT KIALOA

KIALOA originated from a shared love of being on the ocean as outrigger canoe paddlers, living on the windward side of Oahu. We paddled together, raced each other, and afterward talked story and celebrated the shared experiences that brought us together and kept us together - like family ('ohana).

We moved from the Hawaiian oceans to the Oregon mountains and realized that this shared love of being on the water applied equally to the oceans, lakes and rivers of the Pacific Northwest, and to the people who paddle them. Our reverence for being on the water is reflected in this new site, and what you'll find here; a collection of products for being in, on and around the water and stories from the people who use them. It's our intention to enhance the connection to the water and to one another and to share stories from the community that celebrate those connections.

Our Values

PO'OKELA (Excellence)

We strive for excellence in our product and our service through the pursuit of innovation and commitment to quality.

LAULIMA (Teamwork) Our employees, our customers, and our business partners - We are all in this together.

MĀLAMA (Stewardship) We honor the traditions of the past and dreams of the future by caring for people and our environment.

The Story Behind Our Name

When I was 12 years old, my parents enrolled me in a summer school woodshop class. While most of the students built cutting boards and skim boards for their class project, I told our instructor I wanted to build a model sailboat. I wanted to build a boat named Kialoa.

My fondest memories of my father are the times we spent walking around different places on Oahu. One of our “hangouts” was the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. On one of our tours, the fleet from the Transpacific Yacht Race was at anchor. Included in the fleet was race winner Kialoa II. In my 8-year-old mind, she seemed the most beautiful thing in the world.

I only saw Kialoa II once, but the impression of this sleek boat never left my thoughts. Kialoa II the sailboat morphed into Kialoa the dream. The dream a child has when looking to the future and thinking what can be. Somewhere along the line I told myself “ if I ever have a business, I will name it KIALOA ”.

In 1990, my wife Meg and I started an outrigger canoe paddle business on the backyard lanai of my parents’ home. We named the company KIALOA Paddles. In the years since, we have been asked many times if we named the company in reference to the Hawaiian definition for the word Kialoa – swift, fast canoe. The answer is always “no, we named the company after a sailboat owned by Jim Kilroy”.

I still have the model I built of Kialoa II, and while it is not an accurate replica of its namesake she does feature a cast lead keel so she could carry more sail. This model is the only toy I have kept from my childhood. But when I think about it, the model doesn’t matter. Kialoa is really about the time I spent with my father. A time, when he taught me how to dream.

Aloha, Dave Chun
