Viking River Cruises

Viking cruise ship under a bridge on the Mississippi River.

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

7 best Mississippi River cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Mississippi River cruises have surged in popularity in recent decades. They are especially appealing to mature travelers looking to enjoy guided tours of top cities and small towns in several Southern and Midwestern states.

Add in regionally inspired cuisine enjoyed aboard a luxurious river ship, plus the camaraderie of other culturally curious travelers, and cruising the most celebrated river in the United States promises satisfaction on multiple levels.

Two major cruise lines sail the Mississippi, which stretches 2,340 miles from New Orleans to Minneapolis-St. Paul: American Cruise Lines and Viking . Each line offers several similar itineraries ranging from eight to 23 days, but the ships themselves differ. Some are retro-inspired paddlewheelers, others sleek modern riverboats. The onboard dining and entertainment, as well as the excursions in port, also vary across the lines.

We've rounded up the best Mississippi River cruises for seniors, history buffs and Americana lovers, so you can find your perfect U.S. river cruise itinerary based on your interests and travel preferences.

Best cruise for Civil War history: Lower Mississippi (round trip from New Orleans)

riverboat in ms

The Deep South attracts history buffs with its Civil War battlefields and cemeteries and 18th- and 19th-century mansions guarded by regiments of live oaks. Both cruise lines offer a Lower Mississippi river cruise, sailing round-trip from New Orleans, but only one features multiple excursions geared to those with a keen interest in the 19th-century conflict.

On American Cruise Lines' eight-day New Orleans to New Orleans itinerary , cruisers can visit Vicksburg, Mississippi, where the National Military Park commemorates the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg in 1863. In Louisiana's capital, Baton Rouge, a guided excursion explores critical locations in the Civil War's Battle of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson.

Other ports bring to life the pre-war South. In Oak Alley, Louisiana, guests can tour a Greek Revival mansion on a sugar plantation built and maintained by slaves. While no Civil War fighting took place in Natchez, Mississippi, the city is home to hundreds of lavish mansions from the era and the Historic Natchez Cemetery, which dates to 1822.

This itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on four American Cruise Lines ships, ranging from the 150-passenger classic paddlewheeler American Heritage to the 180-passenger modern riverboat American Serenade. American Cruise Lines is known for its regionally inspired cuisine, served with complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner, plus complimentary cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and hosted entertainment in the main lounges.

Some excursions and a pre-cruise hotel stay in the Big Easy are included in the cruise fare. You can book additional day tours for an extra cost.

If you're especially passionate about Civil War history, look for American Cruise Lines' special Civil War-themed cruises on limited dates, which allow a deeper dive into the period. These include a nine-day Lower Mississippi itinerary from Memphis to New Orleans (or vice versa).

In addition to visiting monuments and museums, you'll enjoy onboard lectures and presentations and interaction with other Civil War buffs. These sailings are aboard 150-passenger American Heritage and 180-guest American Melody, American Serenade, American Splendor and American Symphony.

Best cruise for music: Lower Mississippi (New Orleans to Memphis)

riverboat in ms

If you love the musical genres of the South, a Mississippi River cruise from New Orleans to Memphis (or vice versa) should be your choice.

From Crescent City, the birthplace of American jazz, to Memphis, known as the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll, this itinerary celebrates the region's homegrown rhythms. Both cruise lines offer itineraries between New Orleans and Memphis, but Viking features more excursions and onboard experiences tailored to music lovers.

Viking's 12-day Heart of the Delta itinerary includes a two-night pre-cruise hotel stay in New Orleans. This allows ample time to enjoy the city's street musicians and jazz clubs.

In Baton Rouge, you can visit the Capitol Park Museum, which showcases exhibits dedicated to Louisiana's musical heritage and Mardi Gras traditions. While in Natchez, Mississippi, classical music (played on a 1903 Steinway piano) and Southern cuisine are the stars of the excursion to Lansdowne and Joseph Stone House.

The port call in Greenville, Mississippi, is steeped in the blues with a chance to visit a museum dedicated to hometown legend B.B. King. The grand finale of the cruise is two nights in Memphis, where you can enjoy all things blues, barbecue and Elvis Presley.

Viking is a newcomer to the Mississippi River, and all sailings are aboard the 386-guest Viking Mississippi. The riverboat debuted in 2022 and features a modern Scandinavian design. Itinerary departures are available in 2024 and 2025.

Passengers can enjoy a sun terrace with an aft infinity pool and an Explorer's Lounge with panoramic forward views of the Mississippi. The Restaurant serves both Southern regional cuisine and global favorites, and the ship welcomes local musicians onboard for evening entertainment.

Best cruise for art and architecture: Upper Mississippi

riverboat in ms

An Upper Mississippi cruise between St. Louis, Missouri, and St. Paul, Minnesota, provides access to some of the top architectural landmarks and artistic treasures of the American Heartland — from Eero Saarinen's soaring Gateway Arch to Frank Lloyd Wright's inimitable Taliesin.

Both cruise lines offer Upper Mississippi sailings from July through September. Viking and American Cruise Lines' itineraries and excursions are our picks for fans of American art and architecture.

Viking River Cruises' American Heartland itinerary sails from St. Louis to St. Paul (or vice versa) and runs 12 days with pre- and post-cruise stays in 2024 and 2025. You'll explore architectural gems aboard Viking Mississippi, itself an example of sleek, Scandinavian-inspired nautical architecture.

Highlights include St. Louis, where you'll admire Saarinen's circa-1965 Gateway Arch, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis featuring a 41-million-piece mosaic and the Renaissance Revival-style City Hall. From Dubuque, Iowa, you can head to Spring Green, Wisconsin, to visit Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's private home, studio and school from 1911 to 1959.

After a day in Redwing, Minnesota, known for its pottery studios, you'll end your journey in the Twin Cities, home to the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis and well-preserved Victorian buildings in St. Paul.

Related: River cruise packing list: What to pack when traveling by riverboat

American Cruise Line's nine-day Upper Mississippi river cruise covers much of the same ground, with a few differences. Sailings are available on the 150-passenger paddlewheeler American Heritage as well as on three sleek new 180-guest riverboats, American Melody, American Serenade and American Symphony. They're offered between June and late September/early October in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Beyond the landmarks of St. Louis, highlights include Hannibal, Missouri, where you can visit the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, and Dubuque, Iowa, known for its colorful Victorian mansions. (An excursion to the Field of Dreams featured in the 1989 Kevin Costner movie is also available.)

Winona, Minnesota, boasts some of the state's most architecturally significant buildings, many featuring the beautiful stained glass for which the city is known. Then it's off to Red Wing, Minnesota, where you can explore the Pottery Museum before completing your journey in the Twin Cities.

Best extended cruise: Complete Mississippi

riverboat in ms

Want it all? You can visit 18 ports in six states on a 23-day Mississippi River journey from New Orleans to St. Paul. These itineraries are offered by both American Cruise Lines and Viking, and are perfect for seniors with plenty of time to explore.

American Cruise Lines offers the 23-day Complete Mississippi Cruise in 2024, 2025 and 2026, with sailings available on three 180-passenger modern river ships: American Melody, American Serenade and American Symphony.

After a pre-cruise hotel stay in New Orleans, passengers journey through all aspects of American history. You'll visit ports known for ornate mansions (Oak Alley and St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi), Civil War battles (Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Vicksburg, Mississippi), music (Memphis and Greenville, Tennessee) and architecture (St. Louis and Dubuque, Iowa). You'll also call on a historic Missouri trading post in Cape Girardeau (a French river port).

Viking River Cruises' 22-day Grand Mississippi Voyage , available in 2024 aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi, also embarks in New Orleans and visits 16 ports in nine states as it cruises north to St. Paul, Minnesota.

During this sailing, you'll overnight in Memphis, so there's time to fully savor barbecue, the blues and Elvis Presley's Graceland. A port call in Paducah, Kentucky, lets you explore the National Quilt Museum and colorful street murals.

You can enjoy excursions in Missouri's most famous big city (St. Louis) and small town (Hannibal) and then visit three ports in Iowa known for their historic architecture and agriculture (including a tour of the John Deere Pavilion). Learn about the Norwegian heritage of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and get to know the eagles and pottery of Red Wing, Minnesota, before disembarking in St. Paul.

Bottom line

History buffs and Americana lovers will find plenty to enjoy on a Mississippi River cruise. Your ship will stop in major cities and lesser-known towns, offering excursions to historic sites and evenings spent enjoying locally inspired cuisine and regional music.

The two cruise lines sailing America's most legendary river offer itineraries for every interest on ships designed with mature travelers in mind. The TWILIGHT designed and built by Captain Dennis Trone, is a replica of the lavish Victorian steamboats of over a century ago.

Her unique rounded stern and ornate architectural detailing are reminders of those classic riverboats Mark Twain called “Floating Palaces”.

Built at LEEVAC shipyard in Jennings, Louisiana, the TWILIGHT was completed in April 1987. The main deck has a length of 126 feet and breadth of 30 feet. Her full load draft is 5′ 6″.

The propulsion is twin screws, diesel-electric drive. The main propulsion engines are Cummins KTA-19, 510 horse power each, driving 450 KW generators. The propeller shafts are driven by a General Electric traction motor. The propellers are Columbian bronze, 5 blade, 48″ diameter. The fuel capacity is 3000 gallons in 2 integral tanks.

The TWILIGHT is annually inspected and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard.

If you are not vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to do so, however, at this time the Riverboat Twilight does not ask for proof of vaccination. Mask wearing is the choice of the individual. The Twilight offers ample indoor and outdoor seating on all three decks and plenty of fresh air.

We will continue to maintain our increased sanitization efforts of the TWILIGHT and our boarding facilities, and we continue to provide hand sanitizer aboard the boat and employ a strong air purifier that uses UVC lighting that has been proven to destroy viruses and other bacteria.

For the safety of our passengers and crew and to maintain proper cleanliness, we have implemented the following guidelines for parents of children under the age of 14. While onboard the vessel and when making use of our food and beverages services, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. With your cooperation and understanding, we will be able to continue to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

As an owner, of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Le Claire, IA and the President of Great Lakes Management Group which manages the hotel’s day to day operations, I wanted to say thank you. The business relationship with the Riverboat Twilight and her passengers is valued and much appreciated. We all know businesses from every industry has been operating in a different environment the last 8 weeks and will encounter new changes in the future.

We continue to monitor the franchise, local, state and federal safety guidelines to insure our guest and staff safety. For example, we anticipate a few changes in the near future which will include the following: a plastic shield / barrier at the front desk check,  revised breakfast offerings without a buffet setting, hand sanitizer located in the lobby and all floors at the elevator landings, continued use of hospital grade products to clean and sanitize the guest rooms, individual sanitizer wipes as an in-room amenity, removal of all products in the rooms that are reusable for example, pens, pads, laundry bags, and throw pillows, these items will be available upon request. We hope to see you soon. Stay safe and healthy!

Hannibal River Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat

The Mark Twain Riverboat brings the mystique of the Mississippi River and the history of Hannibal to life through one-hour sightseeing cruises, two-hour dinner cruises, and the Captain's Sunday Lunch events.

Schedule can vary, call for times.

Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat have been a tradition for decades

The Mark Twain Riverboat has been a unique fixture on the banks of the Mississippi for more than 30 years, offering visitors an up-close view of the Mississippi River during 1-hour narrated sightseeing cruises or 2-hour dinner cruises.

Hannibal river cruises give visitors the opportunity to explore the Mississippi just like Tom and Huck.  This Mississippi River Cruise departs from Center Street Landing three times daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with two departures daily during September and October.  Dinner cruises depart at 6:30 p.m; check for availability. Built in 1964, the Mark Twain Riverboat is 120 ft. long, 33 ft. wide and has a 400-passenger capacity, so there is plenty of room aboard the vessel, which is wheelchair accessible (w/ some limitations.)

1-Hour Sightseeing Mississippi River Cruise

If you have an afternoon to spare in Hannibal, the Mark Twain Riverboat is a must-stop.  One-hour sightseeing cruises on the river include commentary on river history, legends, and sights.  You will see Jackson’s Island, Lover’s Leap, and of course, the Mighty Mississippi rolling along.  Beverages and sandwiches are available on-ship for purchase during these tours.  A cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat is great for family events.  Whether you are a visitor or resident of Hannibal, you can make wonderful memories aboard our unique riverboat experience!

2-Hour Dinner Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat

For an extended Mississippi River cruise, be sure to reserve your spot on a 2-hour dinner cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Guests aboard Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruises are treated to live music, a buffet meal featuring Riverboat Roast Beef, Baked Boneless Chicken Breast, Baked Potatoes, Seasoned Green Beans, the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad, a Deluxe Tossed Salad, Dinner Rolls and Dessert.  Iced Tea and Coffee are included, and a cash bar is also available.

Once on board, you are escorted to your table, then you are free to roam the boat until the captain announces that dinner is ready.  After dinner, you are free to dance or sit back and enjoy the music.  Live entertainment is included on Dinner Cruises.  It may be The Rivermen playing modern jazz (Saturday night from Memorial Day thru September), or you might get to enjoy the music of Tim Hart (Mondays & Tuesdays), or Adam Ledbetter and David Damm (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).  Listen or dance to their favorite tunes — and they have been known to take a request or two.  And you never know when a crew member or two may step up on the stage and join in.

It’s a fun night of music for the young and the young at heart!  The dancefloor is available after dinner if you are so inclined, or you can choose to dance under the stars on the outer decks (no dancing on the tables and chairs, please).

The Captain’s Sunday Lunch

Enjoy lunch and a cruise on a lovely Sunday!  The dockside meal includes a buffet of Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Seasoned Green Beans, Deluxe Lettuce Salad with dressing, Dinner Roll, and the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad.  Iced tea, coffee and water accompany the meal.  Top all of this with a delicious Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie.

Following lunch, enjoy a delightful one-hour sightseeing cruise on the “Mighty Mississippi” complete with river history, facts about Mark Twain, riverboat stories, and a few (or more!) tall-tales.

Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m.  Departure from the dock will be at 1:30 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m.

We hope you will join us for a delicious meal and casual river cruise; where you’re sure to become more like family by the time the landing whistle blows across the hills of Hannibal!

About La Crosse Queen Cruises

Cruise back in time and explore the Upper Mississippi with us! The La Crosse Queen is a modern-day replica of the grand river boats that plied the Mississippi River in the early 1900s. Cruising out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, she is one of the few authentic Mississippi River paddlewheel river boats still in operation in the United States today. In keeping with early traditions, she was built with sternwheels that are her only means of propulsion.

The La Crosse Queen has a split sternwheel, and each half is run by a twin diesel engine that powers hydraulic motors, which turn the paddles. The split paddlewheel gives the Queen greater maneuverability and dependability. This is in contrast to most Mississippi River paddlewheelers in operation today that have a “free wheeling” paddlewheel at the stern of the boat for visual effect, but have traditional screw-type engines hidden for their real means of propulsion.

The La Crosse Queen is U.S. Coast Guard inspected for safety and is licensed to carry up to 149 passengers.

We took this boat cruise on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The boat was full, but there was plenty of room. Drinks are very reasonable and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. One big plus was the bathrooms were clean and spacious, something I didn't think I would find on a paddle boat! I would recommend the La Crosse Queen.

la crosse queen cruises

We took this cruise with a group and it was a lot of fun! We saw eagles, blue herons, foxes, osprey, along the banks of the Mississippi. We were able to go through the locks, which was lucky since if there is a barge in the area they do not allow this. We are talking about going again in the fall when the leaves are changing and birds are migrating.

We took the Friday night Pizza cruise and enjoyed fantastic views of the Mississippi River. Several people from our group had never been on a river cruise and were amazed. Free Pizza and beer along with cruise for $18.95 is hard to beat! Some questioned the cheap price, but soon found out it was good.

This was an excellent tour. The guide who did the narrative was friendly, fun and knowledgeable about the town and river. We saw bald eagles, a swing bridge, fancy homes, etc. We sat on the top deck which is covered and has open air sides so you get out of the sun and a nice breeze.

Always wanted to take a cruise on the Mississippi and we booked the early afternoon cruise on a weekday. Boarding went smoothly - they take your picture for sale later as a souvenir. Boat was clean and comfy and captain and staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They do have a snack bar and bathrooms on board. Relaxing and enjoyable!

We went on the La Crosse Queen on a beautiful day. Cruising on the river was so cool. The breeze, scenery was awesome. Best place to view everything is on the top deck. The crew were so polite and fun to talk with. If you have questions they answered them. Hats off to the La Crosse Queen.

Wonderful time on a 2-hour Sunday Brunch cruise. The buffet was small but the price was still good. Met wonderful folks inside and outside during the trip. Got to go through a Lock and Dam. The wait staff were very accommodating. Definitely worth every penny for this adventure.

We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary on the La Crosse Queen. The dinner exceeded our expectations. The turkey and roast beef were both tender and moist. For being a buffet the food was delicious. The staff was attentive and live music was a surprise. We were fortunate to have wonderful weather and really enjoyed ourselves!

A History of Riverboats in Mississippi

The mighty Mississippi river stretches from Northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The second-longest river in the United States, the Mississippi is integral to the history of America — particularly in the state of Mississippi. Riverboats facilitated travel, commerce, and cultural exchange within Mississippi and beyond. Learn more about the impact of Mississippi riverboats in this post from Visit Mississippi .

Riverboats: The Early Days

While people have navigated the waters of the Mississippi River for centuries, steamboat technology was not viable until the early 1800s. The first steamboat to travel the Mississippi was the New Orleans, whose October 1811 maiden voyage began in Pittsburgh, PA, and ended in New Orleans after traveling along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

The New Orleans stopped in Natchez in December 1811 before continuing to its final port in New Orleans. First established by French colonists and later ruled by the Spanish, Natchez was an important center of trade and cultural exchange.

The Golden Age of the Steamboat

By the 1830s, steamboats existed all along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. The growth of Mississippi’s riverfront communities, such as Bolivar, Commerce, and Greenville, can largely be attributed to the riverboat trade. Riverboats also brought new settlers to the state, helping to speed up agricultural development in the fertile Mississippi Delta.

Propelled by steam-driven paddle wheels, steamboats could navigate the river more quickly and effectively than barges or flatboats. They carried goods such as cotton, timber, and livestock up and down the river, expanding trade throughout the growing U.S. However, steamboats could be dangerous — the boilers used to create steam could build up too much pressure and explode. Steamboats were also susceptible to hitting obstacles such as rocks or logs, which could cause them to sink. This created a growing industry for a smaller type of riverboat called a “snagboat.” Snagboats patrolled the Mississippi River looking for tree stumps, debris, or other hazards and removing them before they damaged larger steamboats.

Wealthy Mississippians could enjoy leisure travel on a showboat — a riverboat used for theater and musical performances. Showboats were ornately decorated and would announce their arrival at a port by playing music that could be heard for miles.

Riverboats During the Civil War

During the years after Mississippi’s secession from the Union, many steamboats were used to support the Confederate Army. Riverboats carried troops, provisions, and supplies along the Mississippi during the Civil War. Demand for ships was so high that both the Union and Confederate governments chartered steamboats. Riverboats also played a role in the defense of Vicksburg, an important Confederate stronghold that connected the South to the Western states.

Gaming on the River

Riverboat gambling became popular in the early 1900s due to legislation surrounding gaming. By keeping poker, roulette, and other games of chance restricted to a riverboat, business owners could evade the anti-gambling laws that were in effect on land in states along the Mississippi River. Riverboat gaming in Mississippi was legalized in 1993, but unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina destroyed many riverboat casinos. In response, Mississippi lawmakers allowed casinos to move 800 feet inland.

However, you can still find a few riverboat casinos throughout the U.S. In Mississippi, visitors can try their luck at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Vicksburg , a riverboat-style casino and hotel located right on the water.

Mississippi Riverboats in the Present Day

According to National Geographic, by 1900, the growth of railroads across the U.S. significantly reduced the demand for transporting goods and people via steamboat. Many riverboats were retired, but a few showboats remained as a testament to this period in history.

The popularity of riverboats continues to thrive in the Magnolia State. Today, tourists can enjoy the relaxing and immersive experience of river cruising. These luxury expeditions offer a unique way to travel the Mississippi, where guests can admire the breathtaking scenery along the waterway. First-class accommodations, fine dining, and a variety of things to do can be expected on a luxury tour on the Mississippi. Companies such as American Cruise Line and Viking River Cruises offer a variety of cruises that vary in duration and cities visited, like Vicksburg and Natchez.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is keeping an eye on the Mississippi River as water levels have begun to reach low water impact stages.

The lack of rain is starting to show effects in Mississippi. Meteorologists with the corps said river levels in Ohio are forecast to fall below low water stages possibly by the weekend.

“At this point, we should see boats start to, if they’re not careful, they could start to see more groundings,” said Corps of Engineers meteorologist Anna Wolverton. “USACE is working to dredge the river and dredge the main channel and maintain the 9-foot depth channel that they’re mandated to keep open. They’re working to maintain that, but when we get to those low water stages, it gets a little harder to maintain that.”

The Corps of Engineers said the most important thing people traveling the river need to know is to use extra caution and check with towboat navigators or the U.S. Coast Guard.

Worshippers bless the Mississippi River by boat, in an act of Eucharistic revival

The procession pushes a 14-foot-tall golden sculpture, called a monstrance, through the streets of Baton Rouge on Aug. 14, 2024.

BATON ROUGE, La. — The air was already steamy at 8 a.m. on an August morning, the sidewalk radiating heat waves as a crowd filtered into St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Baton Rouge. Hundreds filed into the church, adorned in veils and athleisure wear, white robes and tennis shoes.

They were among thousands of Catholics who converged on the Mississippi River Aug. 14 and 15 for the Fête-Dieu du Mississippi. The two-day boat procession traveled down the river from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. Its star attraction is a 14-foot-tall golden sculpture called a monstrance, which is used in Catholicism to house the spirit of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

The Fête’s concept of a blessing from God bestowed upon a fleet of ships and those who come out to witness it has deep roots in Louisiana tradition. Vessels setting out on shrimping voyages garnered blessings from Catholic priests as far back as the early 1900s. Shrimping was — and still is — a prominent industry in Louisiana and used to be a lot more dangerous. Drownings, accidents involving hooks and pulleys and frequent engine explosions on board were common enough for shrimpers to seek divine intervention in order to feel safe.

Onlookers watch from the banks of the river in Baton Rouge as tugboats are loaded with a giant crucifix and other ceremonial items before the launch of the Fête-Dieu du Mississippi Eucharistic procession on Aug. 14, 2024.

This blessing, usually held on Bayou Teche in the Atchafalaya Basin, represents an intersection of Catholic and Louisiana tradition. Having the pilgrimage on the water rather than on land, “recalls our rich Acadian history and, in a way, re-enacts the journey made by the Acadians 250 years ago,” according to the Fête-Dieu du Teche website .

“The Mississippi River is known around the world,” said Aimee Dawes, an attendee from Baton Rouge. “To put Jesus on the boat with the crucifix to travel down the river, so many more people get to witness him.”

Silver carp jump in the Fox River in Illinois.

The procession started with a Mass on Aug. 14 at Baton Rouge’s oldest church, the gothic building filled to the brim with people from all across the southeastern United States. Inside, the church boomed with sound as the orchestra and choir played and sang in grand unison. Great mahogany arches towered over the parishioners as sweat stained the backs of shirt collars. Paper programs gained a second life as fans to swirl around the still, hot air.

“Let the blessings of our Lord and Our Lady of the Palm Sunday be upon us this hurricane season,” Father Michael Champagne said from the pulpit.

“Lord, hear our prayers,” the crowd responded.

Clergy and congregants pushed the 14-foot-tall golden sculpture, called a monstrance, through the streets of Baton Rouge to the riverfront, before loading it onto a boat for the procession and blessing of the Mississippi River.

The procession, a pilgrimage organized by Champagne and the Community of Jesus Crucified in St. Martinville, carried at its center the 14-foot-tall golden monstrance, central to the tradition of the Eucharist. Deacons and volunteers, red-faced from the heat, pushed the glittering structure from St. Joseph Cathedral to the Baton Rouge boat dock on the river using a rolling metal cart adorned with boxes of pink, red and white carnations.

The 130-mile voyage down the Mississippi River took place against the backdrop of a nationwide Eucharistic Revival, sponsored by U.S. bishops with the goal, according to the National Eucharistic Revival’s website, to “be united once again around the source and summit of our faith in the celebration of the Eucharist.”

The Eucharist is a Catholic ceremony commemorating the Last Supper, in which Jesus ate bread and wine with his apostles the night before his crucifixion. At the core of this ceremony is the idea that the bread and the wine are not just symbols but become “the real body and blood of Jesus” after undergoing a process called transubstantiation.

According to the Pew Research Center, in a 2019 survey , 69% of self-described Catholics believe the bread and the wine used in communion are symbolic representations, deviating from official church doctrine that says the bread and wine aren’t symbols, but truly are the presence of Christ.

Rachel Hafford, right, principal at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Elementary in Destrehan, leads students along the levee in Luling in advance of the Fete-Dieu du Mississippi boat procession Aug. 15, 2024.

The movement to drum up support for stronger Catholic belief in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist began in 2022 . It rolled out with a three-year action plan culminating in a National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis this past July and pilgrimages like the Fête-Dieu du Mississippi happening across the country.

The Fête was held on the Mississippi River this year rather than Bayou Teche to match a central idea in the Eucharistic Revival: Go big.

Downriver in St. Charles Parish, hundreds of faithful gathered Aug. 15 for the second day of the Fête under the Hale Boggs Bridge in Luling. The event coincided with the Feast of the Assumption, a holy day for Catholics that marks the death of Jesus’ mother, Mary, and her ascension into heaven.

Three busloads of students from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in nearby Destrehan were among the participants who lined the riverbank. Their principal, Rachel Hafford, made it a priority to bring the kids to see the flotilla.

“We started [school] last Thursday, so it was quite a task to get a field trip underway and get buses and all that,” Hafford said. “But … being such an instrumental part of our faith, there's no way … that we would miss this opportunity.”

Two women kneel on the riverside as the first boat in the Fête-Dieu du Mississippi Eucharistic procession passes Luling on Aug. 15, 2024.

A few nearby tugboats maneuvered to flank the Eucharistic procession, mirroring people on the riverside who kneeled as the giant golden sculpture floated by under the bridge.

The celebration included a solemn moment in remembrance of those who died in the George Prince ferry disaster almost 48 years ago. St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell placed a wreath on the riverside to mark the occasion.

Teenagers and younger kids with Spring Initiative, an after-school program in Clarksdale, Mississippi, row down the Mississippi River while on a canoeing trip in Helena, Arkansas on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

As the vessel carrying the Eucharist passed along the river, Ann Roshto of Baton Rouge joined many others on their knees and wept. Her tears were brought on by the significance of the moment and the river to her life and the state, she said.

A group of young girls dressed and veiled in white spread flower petals on the road ahead of the Eucharistic procession in Baton Rouge on Aug. 14, 2024.

“The river is important to Louisiana. It’s just a blessing.” she said. “And for Jesus to travel down the river, to allow us to come here and to give him praise and worship, He deserves all the glory.”

The journey down the river ends with another Mass in St. Louis cathedral and celebration in Jackson Square in New Orleans. Onlookers gather around the outside of the church as faithful enter through the arched central doorway. A boy sits on a man’s shoulders and cups his hands over his eyes, peering past the wrought iron fences and French Quarter lanterns in Jackson Square, curious.

'It was surreal': Mississippi alligator hunters bag 14-foot, state record monster

'he dictated everything we did. it was exhausting, but you're adrenaline is going so you don't notice it. it was more mentally exhausting than anything because he kept getting off.'.

Portrait of Brian Broom

When a Mississippi alligator hunter set out on the opening day of the season on Friday, he had no idea he would meet up with the largest alligator ever officially recorded in the state .

He also didn't know it would take him and three other men in his party seven hours to land him.

"We got on the water right at dark," said Donald Woods of Oxford, Mississippi. "We were seeing a lot of alligators. It was a calm night. We saw a lot of 8-footers, 10-footers, but that's not what we were after."

Woods, the tag holder, was hunting on the Yazoo River with Joey Clark of Jackson, Will Thomas of Madison and Tanner White of Flora. He said they've harvested plenty of big alligators in the past, so they weren't going to settle for something smaller the first night.

"We've been hunting these things a long time," Woods said. "We've killed a lot of 12-footers ."

However, it wasn't long before they saw one that caught their attention.

Huge alligator trashes equipment

"We knew he was wide," Woods said. "His back was humongous. It was like we were following a Jon boat."

At 9 p.m., Woods got a hook on the alligator and the next seven hours resulted in broken lines, broken tackle and a broken state record.

"We held onto him a while – until 10 or so," Woods said. "He broke my rod at that point.

"We hooked him eight or nine times and he kept breaking off. He would go down, sit and then take off. He kept going under logs. He knew what he was doing. The crazy thing is he stayed in that same spot."

At that point, the hunters were getting an idea of how large the alligator was.

What?: How did artifacts, thousands of years old, turn up in a Mississippi alligator's stomach?

"There was no moving him," Woods said. "We couldn't do anything with him.

"He dictated everything we did. It was exhausting, but you're adrenaline is going so you don't notice it. It was more mentally exhausting than anything because he kept getting off."

After fighting through the night and well into the next morning, Woods said the alligator finally started tiring. And it couldn't have happened at a better time. Wood said almost all of their rods and reels were unusable.

"We were down to pretty much down to those two rods and reels at that point," Woods said.

Hunters begin to realize how big the alligator was

Woods said at 3:30 a.m. they were able to get the alligator to the boat, secure it and dispatch it. They had him in the boat at 4 a.m. Again, they were getting a better understanding of its size, but not fully.

"We just knew we had a big alligator," Woods said. "We were just amazed at how wide his back was and how big the head was. It was surreal, to tell you the truth."

Once on land, they measured the alligator and it was in the 14-foot range. When officially measured by Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Alligator Program coordinator Andrew Arnett, the alligator came in at 14 feet, 3 inches and weighed 802.5 pounds. It bested the previous record set in 2017 of 14 feet, 3/4 inches.

'I was very suspicious': Fishweir, possibly hundreds of years old, found in Mississippi

So, what does Woods plan to do after catching an alligator like that?

"We're done with chasing big ones this year," Woods said. "I might even call it a career after that, honestly."

Why the Mississippi River got a shoutout at DNC from Sen. Amy Klobuchar

Portrait of Madeline Heim

Minnesota got a lot of love Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago as its governor, Tim Walz, formally accepted the vice presidential nomination .

But one speaker chose to draw upon something that connects the North Star State to many others: the Mississippi River.

At the end of a brief speech describing her closeness with Walz, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota invoked the river, which begins in her home state at Lake Itasca and cuts down the middle of the country before it pours out into the Gulf of Mexico. She named all 10 states the river touches — including Wisconsin — pausing to allow cheers from the delegates of each.

"Let us commit here and now to cross the river of our divides to get to a higher ground," Klobuchar said.

More: What the 2024 Democratic party platform says about climate change

Getting a shout-out at a national political convention was perhaps an unlikely moment of stardom for the Mississippi, one of the world's great rivers. But it's not new for Klobuchar. She used the same phrase when she announced her campaign for president in 2019 near the banks of the river, and in 2021 in a speech at the inauguration of President Joe Biden .

Who can blame her for recycling metaphors when a river makes such a handy one? And in truth, the Mississippi River connects more than just 10 states.

Its drainage basin is massive: all the rain and snow that falls across 31 states and two Canadian provinces ends up in the Mississippi. (About 60% of Wisconsin residents live in the Mississippi River basin.)

And it provides habitat for hundreds of fish and wildlife species, charts the course of millions of tons of goods exported from the U.S. and has a rich cultural history, featured in many beloved books and songs.

Whitney Clark, executive director of the Minnesota-based nonprofit Friends of the Mississippi River, said his team was thrilled to hear Klobuchar mention the Mississippi.

"It's all too easy to take this international treasure in our backyard for granted. But millions of Americans depend on the river for drinking water, recreation and respite, not to mention their livelihoods," Clark said. "And with challenges like climate change and increased flooding, we need all the river champions we can get."

Pearl River Revitalization Coalition forms supporting flood control plan

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A new group is joining forces to throw their support behind one of the flood control plans for the Pearl River.

The Pearl River Revitalization Coalition is comprised of the public and private sectors, non-profits, and other organizations.

Today the group held a kickoff announcing support for Alternative D or Compromise D.

Officials from the Mississippi Children’s Museum, Visit Jackson, The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership, and Jackson State University voiced approval for the project.

It would control flooding while creating an entertainment district and businesses along the water.

Congress has allocated $221 million for the project.

“The business community supports this,” said coalition member and Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership President and CEO Jeff Rent. “We see this as an opportunity for growth, not just in the next five years, but we’re talking 10, 20, 30 years down the road. Look at Tulsa, Oklahoma. Look at Oklahoma City. Look at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Every one of those communities embraced an urban river, developed it, and they are thriving communities.”

The coalition is awaiting a final report from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, expected by year’s end.
