Aerial photo of motor yacht Shemara

2014 saw the completion of a three year project to completely update the interior and exterior styling of the 1930s, 65-metre, gentleman’s motoryacht, Shemara. Design Unlimited played a major role in the project that brought her up to 21st century standards while retaining her 1930s character and ambience. Over 6,000 hours were spent on the detailed redesign of both the interior and exterior styling and the full interior layout. The exterior work included detailed designs for almost all the features and equipment; ranging from the funnels and the plunge pool down to the stanchions and biminis.

Inside, the brief was to return her to her original look and feel, complete with wood panelling, brass work, marble bathrooms and fittings redolent of the 1930s.

Shemara was originally built at the Thorneycroft yard at Woolston, Southampton and launched on 30 April 1938. Her owners were Sir Bernard and Lady Docker, well-known socialites in an era of austerity and social change, and over the years the yacht played host to royalty, film stars and aristocrats. The refit was an all-British affair, completed at Trafalgar Wharf in Portchester for a British owner and using local suppliers.

Shemara received a Judges Commendation at the 2015 World Superyacht Awards

The refurbishment and interior design of a historic motor yacht, originally built in 1938. Our goal was to create a family home – albeit a floating one – that made sense for the client and team of staff. We designed the interior to evoke the glamorous spirit of the boat’s extraordinary history without becoming a slave to it.

By Editorial Team   8 December 2014

The magnificent 65m/212ft classic superyacht SHEMARA makes an exciting addition to the global charter fleet this week and is available in the Caribbean throughout the winter.

SHEMARA was originally built by Thornycroft & Company in 1938 as one of the largest private yachts in the world and went on to serve as an A/S vessel during World War II. For three years she underwent an extensive, one million man-hour rebuild project that saw her returned to her former glory and transformed into a superyacht at the highest levels of design and luxury. She was re-launched earlier this year and has now been made available just in time for the Caribbean yacht charter winter season.

M/Y SHEMARA's new interior is elegant and spacious

The refit took place at Shemara Refit LLP which was set up by her Owner who then recruited naval architects from BAE along with a number of subcontractors and Studioilse for the interior design to collaborate on the project. The results are spectacular and have seen SHEMARA reconfigured, refreshed, and largely rebuilt, retaining her classic charm while boasting an array of innovative new additions to include a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric drive train.

For three years she underwent an extensive, one million man-hour rebuild project that saw her returned to her former glory...

Classic yacht SHEMARA's stunning master suite

SHEMARA’s new interior has also been sympathetically designed to emphasise her original features. The living areas are spacious and elegant, encompassing stylish furnishings and high quality fittings, finished with neutral décor, intelligent lighting solutions and leather and wood materials and a grand central staircase to link all decks. She sleeps up to 12 guests in eight beautiful staterooms to include six double guest cabins and a larger VIP on the lower deck, and an owner’s suite forward on the upper deck.

Charter guests can enjoy relaxation in SHEMARA's sundeck Jacuzzi

Outdoors there are a great selection of versatile spaces, from the observation deck atop the wheelhouse, to a large sunbathing area aft on the bridge deck, an expansive aft deck with plunge pool on the upper deck and an alfresco dining area on the main deck aft.

SHEMARA is available for charter at weekly rates starting from €275,000 and €300,000 plus expenses over the winter, contact your preferred charter broker for more details. Alternatively take a look at the full range of classic yachts available for charter .

You Can Now Charter This 65-Meter, Eight-Cabin, Four-Deck, Two-Saloon Yacht

The newly renovated 65-meter Shemara is one of the prettiest private yachts that boat folk are clamoring to charter this summer. Interiors, by Ilse Crawford, include eight cabins, four decks, two saloons, and a Hollywood-worthy grand staircase. Late for lunch at Eden Roc? Just ask the captain to kick up the Rolls-Royce diesel-electric system to full throttle, at 14 knots. But, remember, this lady is about old-school glamour over nouveau speed.

Continue for deluxe photos of the Shemara and two other classic super-yachts.

Samadhi superyacht

When superyacht Samadhi sailed out of the shipyard following an extensive refit, she was virtually unrecognizable. Originally built by Dutch yard Feadship in 2006 and rebuilt for charter in 2023, she features fresh exterior design and naval architecture by Dutch studio De Voogt and contemporary interiors by French designer Remi Tessier.

Images, that have been made public for the first time, reveal that the yacht’s interior has been completely outfitted. A beautiful light-filled main salon features comfortable curvaceous furniture that creates a cosy ambience despite its generous size. The dining room is is a show-stopper, with a circular table, striking artwork and large windows. Another new feature is a sky lounge that connects to the upper desk alfresco dining area – this space can also be converted into a cinema room.

The Best Electric Scrubbers To Make Cleaning Tough Spaces Easier

The best curling irons, based on several months of testing.

Samadhi sleeps up to 12 guests in six cabins. The Owner’s suite on the main deck forward is particularly special and features exquisite floral wall art that’s reflected in a bespoke carpet. A luxurious marble bathroom lets in views of the ocean and is completed with a traditional Swedish sauna. There’s also a private office for working while under way, hand-crafted walk-in wardrobes, a beauty salon and an intimate spa area with a massage table.

The remaining guest cabins comprises two doubles and two convertible twins with an en suite, plus additional cabin that could sleep children or a nanny.

Out on deck, there is a large swim platform, a hot tub on the upper deck and a fully equipped gym. When it comes to water sports, Samadhi is fully loaded. The garage is a treasure trove of water toys, including Seabobs, Jetskis, kayaks, standup paddleboards, wakeboards, water skis, plus an assortment of diving and snorkelling gear. There’s also a giant inflatable slide and a water trampoline, as well as a three-strong fleet of tenders for shore excursions, including a super stylish VQ45 Vanquish chase tender. All in all, Samadhi is the ideal charter yacht for an active family.

Samadhi is available to charter from $395,000 per week with Edmiston .

Ilse Crawford's top tips for yacht interior design

Consider the interiors right from the start.

Leslie Williamson

Ilse Crawford, the designer of Sir Charles Dunstone's classic yacht Shemara  and founder of Studioilse gives her top tips for doing up a superyacht...

Superyachts are an odd hybrid. On one hand, they have to be really functional – after all, yachts need to be able to float in some pretty difficult conditions. On the other, they are people’s homes, sometimes for quite a long time, so have to feel personal. The challenge is to combine the two. We describe this process as putting warm values into a cold system – it means integrating unmeasurable human qualities into the measurable system of building to tight schedules and strict performance criteria. On a boat, family, friends, guests and staff are all together in a confined space, and their movements and differing needs have to be considered.

Ensure people are central to the design

Casper Sejersen

Good design should start with people. To create truly bespoke, liveable, welcoming interiors, you need to understand their needs and desires. On [ Shemara  the 65 metre classic yacht restored to her former glory in 2015 after a three-year rebuild project], we looked at each space in terms of how it would be experienced at different times of day and by different people. Our aim was to make cabins and corridors, decks and saloons that would amplify and accentuate the activities that took place there. Everything on board has been considered so as to anticipate the needs of the owners and their guests. Shemara  (pictured) was designed for people to enjoy and feel at home in – not just look at.

The crew’s quarters are just as important

Your crew has a big impact on your yachting experience; they need to feel as happy on the boat as you do, so their cabins need to be respected. It was important to us that the fantasy of Shemara didn’t stop at the door to their quarters. We used the same solid materials and detail in their rooms as is found elsewhere (main deck bar pictured) on the boat. The rooms work rather like Swiss Army Knives – everything they might need fits precisely into the space.

Factor in the importance of feelings

We always try to create spaces that are intuitive – when an interior really works, it makes you feel safe and grounded, yet also free. Presented with a confusing maze of staircases and corridors on board Shemara , we decided to slice up through the middle to make room for one central staircase which gave much easier access to the owner's cabin (pictured).

It took its inspiration from the 1930s, adding a feeling of grandeur and becoming the boat’s focal point. It might seem rather indulgent to allocate such a generous space to a staircase, but it means you’re able to navigate the layout intuitively, which makes all the difference to your feelings about it.

Use materials that have integrity

We pay a great deal of attention to materials, from sourcing and lifespan to finishes and colour. On Shemara , those we chose – teak, pine, unlacquered brass, canvas, woven cane and linens – had a nautical feel and, wherever possible, were salvaged from the original. The decking, for instance, became floorboards, and we then plugged every former screw hole with a wooden peg.
