Hi Trina- The charter was wonderful. I really appreciate a fast sport yacht now. We were able to zip around from place to place very quickly. The crew is also excellent and very helpful, especially the captain who obviously has a lot of contacts in the area because we always had the prime dock locations. This was very nice in the St Tropez harbor. The captain made sure our reservations were made and had many helpful suggestions on places to go and things to do. The entire crew did everything to make sure we enjoyed our time. Charter on the Mangusta ABILITY, South of France, Sept.

A superyacht for your superyacht? The rise of the support vessel

Augmenting your boat with an extra vessel can change your yachting experience, discovers Kate Lardy .

The year after Carl Allen sold his company, he gifted his wife, Gigi, a 50-metre Westport – naturally named Gigi – on her birthday. But he wasn’t done shopping. He then went to the Fort Lauderdale boat show and spotted a 55-metre Damen Yachting support vessel. “I didn’t even get on it,” says Allen. “I said that’s the one; that’s what we want.”

Allen personifies the down-to-earth, boat-loving, adventurous owner that gravitates towards tandem superyachting. “I never thought I would sell my company, but my wife and I looked at [the deal] and decided this gives us the opportunity to do some pretty wild stuff,” he says. Adding the support boat, which he named Axis , to his cruising program has made the wild stuff possible. “It has become the platform of everything we do, from Hurricane Dorian relief, pandemic relief, building Walker’s Cay (in the Bahamas), treasure hunting, recreational diving, fishing… The Axis has become the centre of the universe.”

Superyacht owners are increasingly seeing the benefits of augmenting their fleets with a vessel that takes the bulk of tenders and toys off of the mothership while also carrying extra stores, parts and fuel. It’s a solution that suits those cruising far and wide as well as watersports lovers closer to home.

Hans Georg Näder is of the former group. A typical year sees him sailing 25 to 30 thousand miles in his 54-metre carbon Baltic sloop Pink Gin , frequenting South America, the Caribbean and Med. And his time on board has only increased since last December when he purchased 46-metre Pink Shadow , also from the Damen Yacht Support range. “We are now able to be in two places simultaneously. We are able not only to support Pink Gin but also to go ahead or after her, minimizing the wait during the time yachts take to cross oceans,” says the shadow boat’s captain, Oscar Vallejo.

For instance, last winter in the Caribbean the support vessel was on hand to help the sailing yacht get regatta-ready, offloading weight and assisting in the preparations needed to train the 20 hired race crew. Then Pink Shadow took off on a 6,000-mile run to Uruguay while Näder enjoyed more time on Pink Gin in the Caribbean, flying to join the support boat after she arrived at her South American destination.

Näder’s approach of separating the vessels to cover more ground is one school of thought. Other owners, like Allen, prefer to keep them close. It makes sense logistically, he points out; they raft up when on anchor and his 23 crewmembers between both boats work together on tasks like meal preparation, night watch and laundry.

  • 13 Standout Support Shadow Boats

In recent years, a new type of owner has emerged: those using the support vessel as their one and only. Along with this trend has come an improvement in accommodations. “Slowly they are getting more and more yachtie features,” says Damen Yacht Support product manager Wouter Kleijpoel, who confirms that two Damen vessels, B3 and Game Changer , always cruise alone.

For Game Changer ’s owners, a refit post-purchase gave them the vessel they wanted in the timeframe they wanted rather than buying a more typical yacht. “To them it’s a very cool expedition yacht with a submarine, helicopter and very serious dive centre,” says the owner’s representative, Mike Rouse. “But the caveat to that is we charter as a support vessel.”

While cruising 48,000 miles in a single year – stopping in Antarctica, Central America, Indonesia and Australia, among others – Game Changer managed to pick up charters supporting other yachts along the way. “The reasons vary why we get charters,” Rouse says. “In the Mediterranean it’s predominantly as a helicopter platform and security, but in the Caribbean it’s maybe security and diving, and in Antarctica it’s for expedition staff.”

Tom McManus, former owner of 67-metre Global , also managed a successful charter program with his vessel, a product of Shadow Marine, which converted commercial vessels into dedicated megayacht support vessels in the early 2000s. He found demand everywhere, from hosting overflow security teams to offering submersible adventures with Triton Submarines – SpaceX was even a client.

But the year before he sold Global in January 2020, the vessel was involved in a very different kind of operation. After Hurricane Dorian wrecked havoc on Grand Bahama and the Abacos Global was first on the scene to provide assistance. “We made it our mission. It was something that needed to happen. We had the perfect platform and more ability than most to execute it in a scalable way,” McManus says.

Using their helicopter and amphibious car to reach inaccessible areas, the crew worked with the Global Empowerment Mission and volunteers from World Central Kitchen to bring supplies and set up kitchen facilities to serve the islanders over dozens of trips between Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas.

Allen, who bases his yachts in the Bahamas, also found Axis to be essential in the weeks following Dorian. “We brought over a million pounds of supplies, not including diesel, water and gasoline. It was a really exciting time for us, being able to help like that,” he says.

Allen’s latest endeavour has been to resurrect Walker’s Cay, a former sportfishing mecca in the northern Bahamas, which had been deserted since the 2004 hurricane season, which left its marina and hotel in shambles. He praises Axis for its cargo-carrying ability during the redevelopment, and says the boat will be central to the new marina, which will have its soft opening this spring.

When he’s not busy on the island, Allen uses his yachts to scour the shallow Bahama Banks for shipwreck treasure, aided by Axis ’s Triton submarine, Icon amphibious airplane and extensive dive facilities. His permit covers the shoals that snagged many a ship that missed the turn to Europe in bygone centuries. “There are thousands of wrecks out there,” he says. “We’ll probably open a museum next year in Lucaya to show off some things we found.”

  • On board with Carl Allen, serial yacht owner and CEO of Allen Exploration

Allen’s retirement adventures epitomise the endless possibilities that a support vessel brings. With their enormous aft deck, they are essentially a blank slate that can be moulded around anyone’s dream. For instance, Rosetti Superyachts had been speaking with two potential clients about a 43- and 55-metre support vessels, both custom designs by Hydro Tec and wildly different in their intended uses.

The 43-metre was for a client who wanted dive facilities and a helipad for extreme fishing and hunting expeditions. The 55-metre would be used to carry containers of bicycles and scuba diving equipment for the owner’s annual bike trip with friends. Outside of that voyage, the containers could be placed dockside and the deck becomes a vast space for his seven children to stretch their legs off the mothership.

  • Hodor: Is this the world's largest toy box?

While each vessel must be customised for an owner’s programme, a few common features have emerged that define a great one. Naturally cargo-carrying ability is one. And while utilitarian in looks, it must have a modicum of aesthetic appeal to blend with the superyacht crowd. Finally speed. A support boat best be able to outrun the mothership, whether to beat it to the next anchorage or to catch up after picking up toys from the last one.

Several players entered this market with an advantage when it comes to speed. Damen, Incat Crowther and Rosetti Marino Group (parent of Rosetti Superyachts) all have long experience building or designing supply vessels for offshore platforms. Working in the uncompromising oil and gas industry, these boats must be comfortable and quick in all weather.

Damen got into the yacht support business after Roman Abramovich’s fleet manager ordered two of its 50-metre offshore supply vessels to accompany 163-metre Eclipse and company. The Dutch shipbuilder realised there was an opportunity here and presented a yacht-adapted concept at the 2009 Monaco Yacht Show.

The idea took off and it has since built vessels ranging from 46 metres to a 75-metre (currently in build), with the most popular size being 55 metres, which tops out at 20 knots. Oscar Vallejo, captain of the 46-metre, gives the design the thumbs-up. “It is surprisingly good at sea. I was not expecting that. We have an axe bow that extends 3.5 metres down, the deepest point on the boat and it’s just like an axe. We don’t pound into the waves; we break through the waves. It’s incredible.”

The ShadowCAT , designed by Incat Crowther, originates from technology developed for catamaran fast crew boats. New on the superyacht scene, the team launched the first ShadowCAT, 66-metre, 22.5-knot Hodor , in 2019. “We’ve used the catamaran platform as a support vessel for offshore oil and gas, which required robust engineering to carry high payloads at high speeds,” says Dan Mace, Incat Crowther technical manager. “That engineering and that ability to carry the high payload is what formed the basis of the ability to deliver Hodor .”

High payload, indeed. The number of tenders and toys Hodor has stowed on board is astounding: five tenders, four Jet Skis, four quad bikes, a five-person submarine, not to mention the decompression chamber and helipad for an H145. Incat Crowther estimates the catamaran design allows for carrying 40 per cent more volume and 60 per cent more tonnage than a monohull. Furthermore, the inherent stability of the hullform permits 70 per cent more weight to be craned off the side – an important attribute when you consider how large chase boats have become. Impressively, Hodor is able to lift and carry a 17-metre boat.

Lynx Yachts comes with a different perspective – from that of a yacht owner. “Our president is a yachtsman with long experience cruising in the Mediterranean. During his cruising he realised he needed more space for the toys and tenders, but he didn’t want to increase the size of the yacht,” says Filippo Rossi, sales and marketing manager. So he introduced the Yacht-X-Tender, YXT for short, a line of support vessels under 40 metres that are purpose-designed for yachting. Four of them from 20 to 27 metres are currently plying the seas, supporting yachts from 28 to 70 metres with owners who are all crazy about watersports.

The concept is also evolving into a new genre of yachts. Lynx calls theirs the Crossover, a hybrid of sorts between a support vessel and an expedition yacht. “We have a 27-metre Crossover under construction for a passionate gentleman from California who was fascinated by the shadow vessel line, but he also wanted to have space for his family. We added a saloon on the main deck and extra cabin, and in the end, you have a boat that dedicates 50 per cent of the space for guests and 50 per cent for toys,” Rossi says. You can also see this roughly even split on other recent launches, like the 39-metre expedition catamaran The Beast and 85-metre SilverYachts Bold .

These feel like a natural evolution in an industry that’s never been known for its restraint. Its “toys” are growing alongside the mothership – higher-capacity helicopters, submarines, chase boats – but at some point size becomes a limitation. “When you go bigger and bigger you can find yourself anchored 10 miles offshore or at a commercial port next to a container vessel,” says Kleijpoel. Add a second vessel instead, and you get more privacy on the white boat and more access to ports. As Carl Allen, with his two vessels totalling 105 metres, says, “The way we’ve done this is we get the best of both worlds.”

Breaking news, british tech ceo mike lynch’s ‘devastated’ family break silence after bayesian yacht disaster.

The teen daughter of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s was remembered as an intelligent, Oxford-bound student and “special friend” as news broke that her body had been recovered from the sunken Bayesian superyacht.

Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last remaining person still unaccounted for after the luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily in a freak waterspout storm on Monday.

Mike Lynch and his 148-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven killed when the Bayesian superyacht sank on Monday.

Her body was  pulled from the submerged hull by divers on Friday , one day after her mogul dad’s remains were recovered.

Friends of the teen immediately mourned the “warm and beautiful soul” and described her loss as “unbearable,”  the Washington Post reported .

Hannah was “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind. I’ll always remember her smiling,” said Gracie Lea, one of her classmates from London’s elite Latymer Upper School.

One of the beloved teen’s teachers, Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, said the young woman “combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm.”

Rescue personnel retrieved the body of Hannah Lynch from the sunken vessel on Friday.

After acing her national exams, Hannah was set to study English at the University of Oxford, “a goal she had worked so hard towards,” the devastated teacher told the Washington Post.

“I taught Hannah for four years. I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment,” he added.

Other tributes quickly flowed in for the teen as friends, teachers and relatives lamented how the recent high school graduate had been “taken on the precipice of her life.”

“Hannah lived, loved, cared, thought and felt more deeply than anyone I have ever known. Growing up with her and being best friends has been the greatest privilege of my life,” her friend Angelica Read told the Telegraph .

“Hannah was charming and ferociously intelligent with an insatiable thirst for life and knowledge. She was also warm, loving and deeply considerate; remarkably for her age,” added Patrick Jacob, a friend of the Lynch family.

Sushovan Hussain, a close friend of Hannah’s father, also paid tribute.

“We have known Hannah since her birth, and for her to be taken on the precipice of her life is cruel beyond belief,” he told the outlet.

Earlier on Friday, the Lynch family issued their first statement since the shocking sinking.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” a spokesperson said.

“Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coast guard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.”

In addition to the bodies of Mike and Hannah Lynch, divers also retrieved the remains of New York attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda, as well as Morgan Stanley exec Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy.

Search teams had discovered the body of the on-ship chef, Ricardo Thomas, shortly after the Bayesian sank around dawn on Monday.

The doomed voyage was intended to be a celebration of Mike Lynch’s acquittal in the United States on fraud charges related to the 2011 sale of his software company, Autonomy.

Morvillo represented Lynch in the case, which was tried in San Francisco in June.

Lynch’s wife – and Hannah’s mother – Angela Bacares was one of 15 passengers and crew who managed to escape the ship before it was too late.

Sicily Yacht Company CEO Shares "Endless" Errors That May Have Led to Fatal Sinking Tragedy

After the sinking of a yacht off the coast of sicily that left six people—including tech tycoon mike lynch—dead, ceo giovanni costantino is shedding light on the errors that could have been avoided..

The CEO behind the sunken superyacht believes the tragedy in Sicily could have been prevented.

Just days after  superyacht the Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy  during a freak storm early Aug. 19,  Giovanni Costantino , the founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group which owns the company that built the ship in 2008, is shedding light on what he believes was an "endless chain of errors from the crew."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera  Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

As Costantino explained, the crew should have known about the storm, calling the claim that it was sudden and unexpected untrue.

"It was all predictable. I have the weather charts here in front of me," he said. "Ask yourself: why were no fishermen from Porticello out that night? A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The storm was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The CEO also asserted the Bayesian was "one of the safest boats in the world" and practically "unsinkable."

"I'm saying that, in fact, mistakes were made," he added. "There's a world between the arrival of a storm and the loading of water. A series of activities had to be done to avoid finding ourselves in that situation."

In order to have avoided the tragedy, he explains that the first step would have been to armor the hull and deck "by closing all the doors and hatches, after having placed the guests in the assembly point of the ship as per emergency procedure."

Twenty-two people were originally on the yacht when it sank, including 10 crew members and 12 guests. The group had come together to  celebrate the acquittal  of tech tycoon  Mike Lynch  on charges of fraud related to Hewlett Packard's $11 billion takeover of his company Autonomy Corp.

Unfortunately,  Lynch's body was recovered on Aug. 22  from the ship's hull. The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman  Jonathan Bloomer  and his wife  Judy Bloomer  and Clifford Chance lawyer  Chris Morvillo  and his wife  Neda Morvillo   had been recovered on Aug. 21 .

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter  Hannah  is the sixth and final missing person, with rescuers still searching for her.

In all, 15 of the 22 passengers survived the wreckage—one of them Lynch's wife  Angela Bacares —while the body of the ship's cook  Renaldo   Thomas  was recovered following the sinking.

One survivor,  Charlotte Golunski ,  recounted the harrowing experience , sharing how she, her 1-year-old  Sophie  and partner  James Emsley  survived.

"For two seconds, I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves," she told Italian newspaper  La Repubblica  Aug. 20, per the  BBC . "It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

According to Golunski, a lifeboat was soon inflated that 11 of the survivors—including her family—climbed in.

Director of Sicily's Civil Protection Agency  Salvatore Cocina  had previously stated that it was likely a waterborne tornado—known as a waterspout—that struck the area and caused the tragedy.  He noted that the yacht was unfortunately  "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Final Body Is Recovered From Yacht That Sank Off Sicily

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday.

Rescue workers in orange wet suits on the deck of a boat with a green body bag.

By Emma Bubola and Elisabetta Povoledo

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing.

On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived.

Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case.

There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday.

Fifteen survived.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored.

But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies.

The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore.

Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht.

In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.”

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added.

As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access.

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them.

In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck.

Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat.

Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday.

The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain.

One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly.

The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers.

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed.

But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label.

Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out.

The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

The family of a couple who were killed in the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht have paid tribute to the ‘devoted, loving parents’.

Chris and Neda Morvillo are confirmed to have been killed after the Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

A statement from the family said: ‘Chris and Neda were each widely respected for their professional successes, Chris as a distinguished attorney and Neda as a skilled jewellery designer, but their true talents were that of mother and father, son and daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt and dear friends to so many.

‘Neda and Chris lived their lives as devoted, loving parents who always put their daughters and families first.

‘Their passing is a tremendous loss for our family and for the countless people who knew and loved them both.’

A total of six bodies have been found so far, with emergency services saying they believe identities are tech tycoon Mr Lynch , Morgan Stanley International bank chairperson Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife, Neda Morvillo and chef Recaldo Thomas.

Hannah Lynch, Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is still missing.

Oxford University ‘greatly saddened’ by news of Hannah Lynch’s death

Oxford University has released a statement saying it is ‘greatly saddened’ by news of Hannah Lynch’s death.

18-year-old Hannah was due to study English at the prestigious university in September after receiving her A-Level results earlier this month.

The statement reads: ‘The University is greatly saddened by the tragic death of Hannah Lynch, who held a confirmed place to study English at Trinity College from this autumn.

‘Trinity and the English Faculty had been looking forward to welcoming Hannah to the University, and we offer our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.’

Lynch family release statement

The Lynch family have released a statement following news of the final missing body being recovered.

A spokesperson said: ‘The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

‘Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy.

‘They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

‘Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.’

Who is Hannah Lynch, the last person still unaccounted for?

While rescuers have not yet identified the body recovered earlier today, the find will sadly weaken hopes of finding 18-year-old Hannah Lynch.

The teenage daughter of British tech mogul Mike Lynch was the last person yet to be accounted for following the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off Sicily.

Hannah had recently completed her A-levels at Latymer Upper School, a prestigious West London independent school, and was due to start studying English Literature at Oxford University.

Speaking to The Times, a friend described Hannah as a ‘supernova’ who was a ‘staunch feminist’, ‘voracious reader’, ‘natural intellectual’, ‘gentle and kind’ and ‘fun and fierce’.

Another former classmate told the Independent she was ‘incredibly shocked’ to learn Hannah was missing.

Divers find body of final missing person

Specialist divers have discovered the body of the final person missing from the Bayesian superyacht that sank off Sicily, the Italian Coastguard has said.

Hannah Lynch, 18, the daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, was the only person still unaccounted for.

Search for Hannah Lynch ‘hasn’t been quick or easy’

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, said the search for Hannah has not been ‘easy or quick’, comparing the sunken yacht to an ’18-storey building full of water’.

Mr Zagarola said: ‘From the first moment, it has not been easy or quick to inspect the boat.

‘Think of an 18-storey building full of water.’

‘Manslaughter investigation launched’ over sinking

A press conference has been announced for tomorrow at which prosecutors are expected to reveal more details of the criminal investigation being carried out.

Coastguard officials have been trawling through footage from homes and other properties with cameras facing out to sea in the area where the Bayesian went down, Palermo Today reports.

The Italian news outlet adds that the prosecutor’s office is also reviewing the actions and decisions of the ship’s crew.

Bayesian shipbuilder says crew had time to avoid disaster

The chief executive of the company that built the Bayesian superyacht has said it is ‘absurd’ the passengers were in their cabins when the storm hit.

Giovanni Costantino, who leads the Italian Sea Group, told The Times: ‘Why were in their cabins?

‘Local fishermen saw the storm was coming, why did no-one on board the Bayesian realise?

‘From 3.50am, the captain had four minutes to get the passengers out of their cabins.’

He continued: ‘They should have jettisoned the anchor, started the engine, pointed the bows to the wind and put the keel down.

‘If they had done that, no-one on board would have been afraid, they would have been back to bed in an hour and ready to push on with their voyage.’

Italian coastguard ‘trust’ there will be progress today

The Italian Coastguard ‘trust’ that there will be significant progress today in the search for Hannah Lynch from the wreck of a yacht that sank off Sicily, a spokesman said.

Asked if any developments are expected on Friday, Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, replied: ‘We trust.’

Search for Hannah Lynch ends for another day

Specialist divers have stopped today’s search for the missing 18-year-old daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

She remains the only person unaccounted for after the superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily around 3am on Monday.

A total of six bodies have been recovered since the sinking of the Bayesian.

Emergency services saying they believe identities are  tech tycoon Mr Lynch , Morgan Stanley International bank chairperson Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

British crew member is ‘okay’, brother confirms

A British engineer who survived the disaster is ‘okay’, his brother has confirmed.

Tim Parker-Eaton, from Clophill, Bedfordshire, is one of the 15 people who survived the sinking.

His brother Stephen told The Telegraph he is ‘okay’, but cannot say anymore.

Stephen said: ‘I’ve just been advised that he’s in a situation, and they’re dealing with it, and I should not make any comment until that has been resolved with the right authorities.

‘I am not aware of the situation – as to what is going on there – I am just aware that he has survived.’

Tim has been associated with the Bayesian for more than a decade, and in 2013 served as the yacht’s chief engineer.

Yacht sinking ‘torture’ lasted 16 minutes

The chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which owns several boat brands including the Bayesian’s builder, Perini Navi, said the sinking lasted 16 minutes.

Giovanni Costantino told the Financial Times: ‘The torture lasted 16 minutes. It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said.

‘It went down in 16 minutes.

‘You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart.’

Chris and Neda Morvillo were killed in sinking, family confirm

The family of Chris and Neda Morvillo said the couple were killed in the sinking of the Bayesian yacht on Monday.

They said: ‘We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy.

‘Chris and Neda were each widely respected for their professional successes, Chris as a distinguished attorney and Neda as a skilled jewellery designer, but their true talents were that of mother and father, son and daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt and dear friends to so many.

‘Neda and Chris lived their lives as devoted, loving parents who always put their daughters and families first. Their passing is a tremendous loss for our family and for the countless people who knew and loved them both.

‘We extend our deepest gratitude to the Italian rescue services for their unwavering dedication and to Clifford Chance for all the support they have provided.

‘As we grieve this enormous loss, our primary focus remains on Chris and Neda’s daughters and other loved ones, and we respectfully request privacy.’

Mike Lynch was a ‘visionary unlike any other’

The chief executive of legal AI company Luminance has paid tribute to its founder Mike Lynch, saying he was a ‘visionary unlike any other’ following his death in the luxury yacht disaster off the coast of Sicily.

Eleanor Lightbody said in a statement: ‘I am devastated to hear the news about our founding investor, Mike Lynch, and all of those involved in this tragic accident.

‘Mike was a visionary unlike any other. He had a unique ability to spot the next technological revolution and solve tomorrow’s challenges before others even knew they were coming.

‘Beyond that, it was his connection to people that made him special. He had a steadfast belief in the UK’s technology sector, in our incredible academic institutions, and in the talent he took the time to spot and nurture, regardless of background or discipline.

‘Above all, Mike was a kind man who had an impact on many and will be sorely missed. I feel honoured to have known him, worked with him and learnt from him over the years.

‘The UK has lost someone with the means, authority, knowledge and drive to propel the UK into technological leadership, but his legacy will live on in all of the extraordinary businesses he built and mentored, as well as his family who are in my thoughts.’

Family friend of Mike Lynch says tech tycoon was ‘lively and enriching’

A family friend of technology tycoon Mike Lynch has paid tribute to him following his death in the luxury yacht disaster off the coast of Sicily.

In a statement, Patrick Jacob said: ‘Mike’s ability to identify and solve complex problems was phenomenal as was his ability to simplify and explain them.

‘As a friend, Mike was never dull and always ready for a lively debate on almost any topic conducted with intelligence and convivial vigour.

‘He could be challenging and direct but I never came away from seeing him without feeling my life was enriched by the experience.’

Athena Lamnisos, chief executive of the Eve Appeal, has paid tribute to Judy Bloomer who was a trustee of gynaecological cancer charity the Eve Appeal.

She described Ms Bloomer as ‘our very dear friend’ who was a ‘champion for women’s health, medical research and all that the Eve Appeal stands for’.

Ms Bloomer studied English at Homerton College, Cambridge, before working as a psychotherapist for 30 years.

She specialised in anxiety and stress.

Mike Lynch ‘retreated to his Suffolk farm’ before trip to Sicily

Mike Lynch who is was killed in the sinking of the Bayesian had recently returned to live at his Suffolk farm following his 12-year legal battle.

After he had been acquitted over multiple fraud charges in the US, he returned to his 2,500 acre farm in Wickham Market, Suffolk.

Speaking of his return, he told the East Anglian Daily Times: ‘It was one of those lovely English grey days.

‘I finally made it home and made it up into Suffolk and that was finally the end of the journey, so that was brilliant.’

He lived in Suffolk for 34 years and moved into the farm in 2009.

‘The one thing you find you want to hear about is the most simple things from home.

‘I just wanted to hear “the river is flooded today” or “the electricity went off” or “someone’s cow escaped” – all those things that bring you back to the real world.

‘I was lucky enough to get back to Suffolk in June. It has been a total delight to be back.

‘The lovely thing I find about Suffolk is there is still a real sense of community there. You get to know lots of people doing all sorts of things.’

Crew and passengers ‘had no warning’ about the storm

A boat carrying a dive team heads out to the site of the Bayesian on the fourth day of the search

Those on board the Bayesian yacht likely ‘had no warning at all’ about the storm which caused the boat to sink, an expert has said.

Oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall said although the vessel was legally obliged to have a watchkeeper, it would have been hard to spot approaching storms at night.

He told the BBC : ‘There wasn’t a lot of time for anyone who was on watch to respond.’

The bodies of UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and four of his guests on the superyacht Bayesian have been recovered, three days after it sank off the coast of Sicily, according to Italian officials.

The officials said the bodies of Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance and Jonathan Bloomer , chair of insurance group Hiscox and Morgan Stanley International, alongside their wives, Neda Morvillo and Judy Bloomer, have been retrieved.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing, after Bayesian went down in an intense storm near Palermo on Monday.

The five bodies were pulled from the sunken yacht on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The body of Recaldo Thomas, the boat’s chef, had been retrieved earlier in the week.

Mike Lynch

The officials asked not to be named as they were not authorised to speak publicly.

No formal identification of the bodies has been announced by the local authorities. The Italian public prosecutor is charged with making the official determination of the deaths.

A representative for the Morvillo family spoke of their “tremendous loss”.

“We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy,” they said.

A Bloomer family spokesperson described their “unimaginable grief”.

“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family,” they said. “Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.”

A spokesperson for the Lynch family declined to comment.

David Tabizel, who helped Lynch set up Autonomy, paid tribute to his “exhausting, exhilarating and incisive” friend, describing him as a “witty, loyal polymath with a mind like a razor blade”.

Brent Hoberman, the investor and entrepreneur who co-founded Lastminute.com and Founders Forum, said Lynch was a “pioneering titan of UK technology”. “He was an outlier and an original thinker,” he said.

Lord John Browne, former chief executive of BP, said Lynch “should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK”.

Suranga Chandratillake, former US chief technology officer at Autonomy and now investor at Balderton Capital, called Lynch’s death an “incalculable loss to UK tech”, as well as a “hugely inspirational friend who would always have time to help you find a solution [with] a sense of humour [and] a cup of builder’s tea”.

The trip on Bayesian had been planned as a celebration of Lynch’s recent acquittal on US fraud charges, after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his software group Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

Morvillo represented Lynch in his recent US case, and Bloomer appeared at the trial as a witness for the defence.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 survivors rescued in the early hours of Monday morning.

Italian and UK authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the shipwreck after some eyewitnesses claimed the yacht sank in just a matter of minutes.

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italian Sea Group, which owns Bayesian’s manufacturers Perini Navi, told the Financial Times that the 56-metre, British-registered yacht was “absolutely safe”. ISG’s tracking data shows it took 16 minutes from the time Bayesian started dragging its anchor until it sank.

A team of divers has struggled for days to access the interior cabins of the 540-tonne yacht, due to the volume of debris inside a wreck that lies 50 metres below the surface.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.
