Another dual outrigger sailing kayak/canoe design, the Triak trimaran was designed to be effortless and fun, especially for beginners. Car-top the Triak anywhere for a quick sail or plan for a week long expedition, but always count on having a great time on this easy little boat.

For the sailor who prefers the finer things in life, the Radikal 26 delivers. Perfect for bringing the whole family out for a day on the water, this high performance, trailerable sailing trimaran strikes the most luxurious balance between quicksilver speeds and a smooth, comfortable ride. The Radikal 26 trimaran is as convenient to transport and set up as it is pleasant to sail, with a folding system that minimizes rigging hassle and also makes this a trailerable tri. Built for a fast and comfortable sail rather than a hold-onto-your-seats thrill, one-the-water safety and overall pleasure makes the Radikal 26 what it is.

Caudrelier wins the 2022 Route du Rhum with new course record
- Toby Heppell
- November 16, 2022
The close-fought three-way battle for victory among the giant Ultimes in the 2022 Route du Rhum saw a new course record and win for Charles Caudrelier on Maxi Edmond de Rothschild
Charles Caudrelier sailing his Ultime trimaran Maxi Edmond de Rothschild was first to cross the finish line of the 2022 Route du Rhum race this morning in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe in a time of 6 days 19 hours 47 minutes and 25 seconds.
This is a new (yet to be ratified) course record for the Route du Rhum with Caudrelier beating the previous best set in the last race by Francis Joyon of 7 days 14 hours 21 minutes and 47 seconds, despite early conditions being far from favourable.
After the line an emotional Caudrelier said: “I’m not even tired. The first 24 hours were hard.”
The Gitana campaign is one of the most long-standing and committed sponsorships in sailing. Caudrelier took over the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, also known as Gitana 17, as solo skipper last year, having previously co-skippered with Franck Cammas for double-handed and crewed campaigns.
He continued: “I so wanted to win the race for the team. I’ve been dreaming of it since I was young. It’s for the family Rothschild. It seemed like a crazy idea, building a boat that could fly. It’s for Franck Cammas, as he had the experience. Without him I wouldn’t be here. He left me the place for the Rhum. He could have won it himself.
“It’s a Formula 1 team and I just drive in the race. This is a team effort and there’s Guillaume Verdier, the designer. I recently lost my mother and she isn’t here to share this moment. Thanks to everyone for believing in me.”

It has been an impressively close battle between the top three Ultime trimarans ( Gitana , Sodebo and SVR-Lazartigue Ultime ) throughout much of the 3,542-mile race. Caudrelier led the fleet from the start but has not had things all his own way.
Initially the race committee called Gitana as was one of several boats over the starline, which would have required Caudrelier to stop for a mandatory four hour penalty. However, the Gitana race team were able to provide a significant amount of GPS data to the race officials to show that he was actually 50m behind the startline at the gun and the penalty was dropped.
Although Gitana led out of the start and at the finish, the lead swapped between Caudrelier and François Gabart (sailing SVR-Lazartigue Ultime ) on a number of occasions as the huge foiling multihulls navigated several complex light wind transitions. But is was Caudrelier in the lead most of the time, with his gap to Gabart remaining around 40nm for much of the Atlantic crossing with a maximum gap to second of a little over 100nm.
Gabart is set to finish shortly, picking up his second consecutive 2nd place in the Route du Rhum, having lost victory to Francis Joyon in the final minutes of the 2018 edition of the Route du Rhum.
Thomas Coville on Sodebo Ultim 3 also remained in close contention with the lead two boats throughout this year’s Route du Rhum and was close enough to be consistently putting pressure on Gabart in second. This morning, however, his team reported he had caught a fishing net on his final approach to Guadaloupe.
Four years of improvement
Most significantly, this Route du Rhum resolved many questions of reliability for the giant Ultimes, with no significant incidents after Armel le Cleac’h on the Maxi Banque Populaire XI incurred foil damage at the start (he was able to repair and restart later).
It is a significant contrast to the 2018 Route du Rhum, which saw the previous Banque Populaire capsize and break up, Maxi Edmond de Rothschild had a whole bow section ripped clean off, the previous Sodebo suffered structural issues, while Gabart’s Macif limped to the finish missing two of its newly retrofitted foils.
This time around the Ultime skippers consistently managed 30-plus knot speeds and periods of headwinds and large swells, without capsize or serious damage. The reality of these giant 100ft trimarans racing around the world solo has got a step closer.
Route du Rhum still close for the other fleets
Further back, in the middle of the Atlantic, Charlie Dalin ( Apivia ) remains the clear leader of the IMOCA 60 fleet – a position he has held since the fleet sailed out of the English channel shortly after the start of the race. But a singnificant lead for Dalin has been reduced as he was the first to hit a lighter weather front allowing the rest of the fleet to close on him.
This gateway to the trade winds is very narrow and keeps changing for the IMOCA 60 fleet and is causing headaches for those in the tight pack immediately behind Dalin. “As long as we haven’t slipped under the area of high pressure and crossed the ridge, it’s going to be complicated,” commented Jérémie Beyou ( Charal ) early in the morning on Wednesday 16th November.
Jeremie Beyou is in a close fight for second in the IMOCA 60. Photo: Eloi Stichelbaut
The winds are light and variable going from 6 to 13 knots. “I’m getting passed by Thomas (Ruyant). He is two miles above me, but I can’t find the wind here… It’s complicated with a lot of people around me, but that does offer the advantage of indicating where the wind is. Losing or gaining places happens very quickly, when it’s close like this.” His lead of ten miles over Paul Meilhat ( Biotherm ) and Thomas Ruyant ( LinkedOut ) has quickly vanished.
There is a similar situation with the Ocean Fifty boats with the gaps narrowing between the three frontrunners, Quentin Vlamynck ( Arkema ), Erwan Le Roux ( Koesio ) and Sébastien Rogues ( Primonial ). Eighty miles separated the three yesterday, but now the gap is down to less than 25.
Things are slightly different for the Class40 boats with Yoann Richomme, skipper of Paprec Arkea leading the fleet since Monday afternoon. He continues to extend his lead and is now thirty miles ahead of Corentin Douguet ( Quéguiner – Innoveo ). “I’m trying to sail well and keep cool. There is another front moving in from the west. We have to get in the right place to deal with it. I’ll be trying to cross it where there is the smallest risk. The weather changes very quickly. I’ll try to avoid the calms, as it would be a pity to get stuck in there. We have to remain on it. The gateway is narrow and changing all the time. This is a critical and crucial moment in the race,” concluded Yoann Richomme.

Folding System
Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.
Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.
The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.
TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS
Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

Derek Kelsall, the naval architect who invented the modern trimaran
The world of ocean racing has lost one of its pioneers. Architect Derek Kelsall passed away at the age of 89 on December 11, 2022. He will be remembered as the man who designed the first modern racing trimaran and developed sandwich construction. A look back at the history and career of an ocean racing pioneer.
Rural origins
Derek Kelsall was born into a modest family in Wales on May 15, 1933. His father, a farm worker, and his mother, a teacher, instilled in him traditional values. As a student, he entered the University of Bristol, but was unable to complete his studies due to lack of funds.
As part of his military service, he was deployed for a full year in Kenya. Upon his return, he entered the oil industry and was hired by BP.
After starting his career in the Persian Gulf countries, he was sent to an operation in Texas.
A transatlantic race with his first multihull
It was during this period, in the Caribbean Sea, that Derek learned how to build and sail multihulls. For the first time in his life, he had the money to become a skipper and built a 35-foot plywood trimaran which he named Crazy . Designed by Arthur Piver, this trimaran is rigged as a ketch and is not equipped with ballast, which was the norm at the time.
Then on a whim, and supported by his young wife Clare, Derek signs up for the 2 e edition of the English Transat in 1964 and took the start of the famous transatlantic race between Plymouth and Newport. He found himself alongside competitors such as Francis Chichester and Eric Tabarly , who mentions him in his memoirs as a " an attractive engineer, whose trimaran can create a surprise downwind through the trade winds.
Thanks to favorable conditions, Folâtre got off to a good start, but broke his rudder after five days of racing. After repairing in Plymouth, Kelsall took to the sea again and completed the journey in 34 days, while Tabarly crossed the finish line as the winner after 27 days at sea.
The pioneer of the oceanic trimaran
Convinced of the merits and potential of a multihull in an ocean race, Kelsall used his engineering background to design Toria a 45-foot trimaran. A visionary, Derek brought to his multihull a plethora of innovations that would inspire ocean racing for decades.
Built in a sandwich construction on an Airex foam base, Toria has long, bulky floats, connected to the central hull by two parallel arms. Its wetted surface is reduced, as it sails on two hulls when under sail. The microcosm of ocean racers was skeptical at the launch of Toria the monohull is still preferred in European culture.
Tabarly is invited by Derek to sail on Toria during a delivery trip to the south of England. On his return to France, Tabarly was amazed by the performance of the English trimaran and began designing Pen Duick 4. But for reasons of culture and cost, he turned to the French architect André Allègre to design this 68-foot aluminum trimaran. Kelsall will regret for a long time not to have been solicited for this innovative project.
The foam sandwich construction technology developed by Kelsall interested Sir Thomas Lipton, who asked him to build a 60-foot monohull to compete in the 1968 Ostar. Due to several breakdowns, Derek finished in 5th place e place in this edition, which was won by Sir Thomas Lipton. Tabarly and his Pen Duick 4, victim of a collision with a cargo ship, had to turn back.
1970-1980: the rise of the racing trimaran
In the early 1970s, Derek had further success in trimaran design, with the launches of Toria Triffle , Three Legs of Mann and Trumpeter who shine in Anglo-Saxon regattas. In 1973, he built for Chay Blyth the Great Britain 2 which is the largest composite boat of its time.
In the 1980s, all ocean racers turned to the trimaran. The projects flowed in this race for innovation, mostly taken over by Breton skippers.
Faced with the control of the "froggies", Kelsall designed a 52-foot trimaran , VSD with which Eugène Riguidel and Gilles Gahinet won the double-handed Transat Lorient-Les Bermudes-Lorient in 1979, ahead of Marc Pajot and ric Tabarly.
On the strength of this success, Riguidel maintained his confidence in the English architect by ordering a giant 93-foot trimaran from him, William Saurin, which is the largest trimaran in the world at its launch.
A career in yachting
Afterwards, Derek Kelsall left the microcosm of ocean racing to concentrate on the design of pleasure boats. He designs numerous cruising yachts and multihulls.
He developed a shipbuilding technique, KSS for Kelsall Swiftsure Sandwich, which consists of cutting flat composite panels instead of shaping them, thus improving shipyard productivity. This technique has been used to build small ferries and cruising yachts , as well as mass-produced models such as the Space 55, Suncat 40 and Islander 39, and larger models such as the 70-foot My Way.
An active retirement at the kiwi's
After the death of his wife Clare, Derek travels to New Zealand in the 90's to follow the construction of a 72 foot catamaran . Falling in love with the country, he decided to settle there and continue his activity as a ship designer. He will give his last strokes of the pencil there before disappearing at 89 years old on December 11, 2022.
