MAXI YACHT ROLEX CUP: CLASS PERFORMANCES

yacht a porto cervo 2023

Porto Cervo, 09 September 2023 – Since the early 1980s, maxi yacht owners and sailors have been drawn to the Costa Smeralda and specifically the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Considered the perfect sailing package the event unites first-class organization, a majestic sailing environment and the world’s leading maxi yachts and professional crews.

Rolex and event organizer the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) have enjoyed a close partnership for nearly 40 years. The longevity of this collaboration has been at the heart of the event’s continued success and evolution. Support for the organization of the week-long regatta is provided by the International Maxi Association (IMA).

The 2023 edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be considered a special vintage. Four days of racing offered the full repertoire of the Costa Smeralda sailing experience, from the strong breeze, big waves and robust sea state of the regatta’s initial exchanges to the light, unstable conditions which closed proceedings.

The Maddalena Archipelago’s myriad of race courses feature numerous narrow passages and rocky outcrops. On such testing fields of play, sailing powerful yachts at high speeds requires total synergy in teamwork and deft boat handling skills.

Sailors, drawn from the cream of professional sailing talent, were left enthralled by the week’s competition. Former Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Mike Sanderson, part of the afterguard on  Bella Mente , was one such example:

“The location is so special. Sun, big waves and big breeze. For so many teams this is the pinnacle event of their year. We have worked all year to develop the boat to be ready for this regatta.”

For Mitch Booth, two-time Olympic medallist, overall Rolex Middle Sea Race winning skipper in 2021 and tactician on Leopard 3 , the event is without equal:

“Coming together in such an iconic place, it is a real season highlight and a clash of the titans, the best against the best in perfect sailing.”

Accolades went to the six class winners who showed great consistency and expertise in dealing both with the vagaries of the conditions but equally the formidable nature of the opposition. Proving triumphant were:  Galateia  (Maxi Class A),  Bella Mente  (Class B),  Spirit of Lorina  (Class C), Y3K  (Supermaxi),  Svea  (J Class) and  Allegra  (Maxi multihull).

Since its foundation, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has been the showcase for the evolution in maxi yacht design and technology. The 48-strong fleet at this year’s 33rd edition was one of the most eclectic to date. From the largest entrant,  Svea  (43.6m/143-ft) through to the smallest  Blue Oyster (18.3m/60-ft), an eye-catching range of yachts were on display.

Innovations for the 2023 edition included the first ever appearance of the maxi multihulls. As YCCS Commodore Michael Illbruck explains this aligns with the event’s perennial commitment to be at the forefront of developments:

“Change is a constant in the world of yachting, and continuous evolution has been the key to the success of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, right from the first edition in 1980 up to the present day. The inclusion of multihulls fits perfectly with this perspective, a natural development of an event that has always been characterized by cutting-edge technology. Opening up to other categories allows owners to continue to pursue their passion and may inspire others to do so.”

The oldest competing yachts included the J Class  Velsheda  and the recently restored  Baruna , both dating back to the 1930s. Thomas Bscher’s Baltic 68  Open Season  proved a highlight amongst the newer launches and one which symbolises a movement within sailing design to consider even more closely the environmental impact across all aspects of boat building and performance. Creating fair and exciting competition across such a diverse fleet requires significant race management organization, one the event has long been renowned for. The rating system and division of classes is constructed with this in mind and to provide owners and sailors with the platform to pursue their passion for the sport.

On the water, one of the closest divisions was the eight strong Maxi B group where American yachts  Bella Mente  and  Proteus  broke away to contest the title. Going into what proved to be the regatta’s final race, they were tied on points.  Bella Mente  finished first to cap an impressive week on the water which saw the stellar crew, predominantly together for the past decade, claim two bullets and three second places. Delight for owner Hap Fauth:

“We come every year and it is the pinnacle of our season. This is our fourth victory in eleven years and the hardest fought.”

yacht a porto cervo 2023

Even closer was the Supermaxi competition. Only three points separated the top three yachts –  Moat ,  Inoui  and eventual winner  Y3K , the recently launched Wally 101. It marked a return to Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup success for owner Claus-Peter Offen:

“I have been racing here for 25 years. For us it is the highlight of the regatta season. This is where we want to be thanks to the beauty of the area and of the yacht club.”

For the class winners, crowned at the final prizegiving, victory at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is reward for overcoming world-class competition, an intense and challenging racing programme and having prepared in peak form for the pinnacle event in the maxi yacht calendar. The overriding sentiment was an appreciation for an event which always delivers on excellence.

ABOUT ROLEX AN UNRIVALLED REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND EXPERTISE Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Perpetual watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization. The word ‘Perpetual’ is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet. Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts and culture, sport and exploration, as well as those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet.

Aspire lift 5.5 Metre world title after tense final day in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has won the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after a tense final day on the water in light winds with just one race possible. They overcame a massive challenge from  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) who ended up just one point behind, while Race 9 winners  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) protected their third overall.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Ku-Ring-Gai III  led at every mark to take a well-deserved bullet and secure third overall, while  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) sailed a great race to cross third to end a tough week for them   For  Aspire , this was their first attempt at the world title and also marks the first ever 5.5 Metre title won by a Polish team. Winning major titles, and Olympic medals, is no stranger to Kusznierewicz but he was genuinely delighted, and relieved, to have taken home this title this week.   “It's an amazing feeling to be the world champions in the 5.5 Metre class. We enjoyed it so much. Actually, I must say, it was tough. We had to put a lot of energy into it. We built up for a couple of days after arriving here, and every day we were striving to improve. I believe this dedication was the key to our success – to never give up, to be better every day. We delivered. Just one point ahead of  Artemis . Congratulations to them. Also, a shoutout to the Australian team led by John Bacon. The entire fleet was fantastic, and we truly enjoyed Porto Cervo and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Thank you very much.”

Middleman, Przemysław Gacek, added,  “We really enjoyed our time here. It is my first title ever, so I'm super excited. I was practically pushed into the water already, so I'm quite wet. It’s been an amazing few days in Porto Cervo, a great venue for sailing with different angles and conditions. Today was a surprise because after the first race, it calmed down, and we thought we were going back. Then they let us go for the last race, which was just unbelievable. We pretty much, let’s say, defended the championship in the last two, three hundred meters. An amazing time. Also, big congratulations to Mateusz, our incredible skipper, and to Ed, who, after becoming the World Champion in Finn, secured his second World Championship this year. We are proud to have him as a team member.”   Current Finn world champion, and bowman, Ed Wright, was overjoyed to win a second title this year, “ It was an awesome regatta, really. Porto Cervo is an incredible venue with some really good winds, offering a mixture of sailing conditions – wavy, flat, windy, light, medium, testing every sort of angle of sailing technicality. Being a member of  Aspire  was fantastic, and I'm happy to have won the world championship. It was stressful along the way with our ups and downs, but in the end, we came out on top.”

Aspire and Artemis slug it out for 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) extended on the fleet with a race win apiece on the penultimate day of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia.  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) moves up to third.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Thursday brought light and occasionally moderate winds for a great day of racing in Porto Cervo, while many of the top 10 recorded some high scores, which opened the gap for the top two boats.   The first race started with a Mistral wind of 8-9 knots with several boats over the line at the start, which left them playing catch up. The front runners from the start were  Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott),  Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  rounding the first windward mark in that order, very close to each other.    Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  used the downwind pressure well, both passing  Jean Genie  and from that point onward, they led the race, with  Aspire  crossing first ahead of  Ku-Ring-Gai III .  Jean Genie  managed to secure third on the last downwind leg, passing  Artemis .

Artemis fight back on Day 3 of World Championship in Porto Cervo

Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) put in the best performance on day 3 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, to pull back to within three points of event leaders  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright).  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) moved up the third after winning the last race of the day.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Despite the earlier start at 11.00 to make the best of the forecast, Wednesday produced light and shifty conditions of no more than 5-8 knots that challenged everyone and brought a lot of different boats to the front of the fleet. It was a tough day and many decisions had big consequences as the fleet navigated the tricky wind.   In Race 5,  Marie-Françoise XXII  (SUI 232, Jürg Menzi, Lionel Rupp, Christof Wilke) rounded first and sailed away to a comfortable win. Behind them,  Beta Crucis  (AUS  63, Bob Stoddard, Martin Cross, Simon Reffold) rounded second with  Artemis  in third and battled downwind and up again with  Caracole  (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Daniel Stampfli, Nicolas Berthoud) also in the mix. As they approached the finish,  Artemis  just had enough lags to cross in front of  Beta Crucis  to take second.   The breeze looked like it might increase for the second race but in fact dropped to 5-6 knots. This time,  Isla  (GBR 40, Stephen Quigley, William Finlay, Tom Quigley) rounded first from John B and  Melx III  (GRE  5, Stavros Papagiannopoulos, Panagiotis Kamouridis, Pavlos Kagialis). At the gate  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) was just ahead of  John B  with the Greeks still in third. It all changed on the second beat with  John B  making a break and leading down to the finish from  Artemis  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III.

Both  Artemis  and  John B  put in impressive performances in very tough conditions. With the discard now in after six races,  Aspire  holds a three point lead over  Artemis , which scored two amazing second places today, while  John B  is a further nine points back.   Gavin McKinney said,  “The first 10 minutes of the race set the tone, and whether you're a slow or fast boat matters. If a slow boat gets in front, faster boats may catch up, but if a fast boat positions itself well, it becomes challenging to be overtaken. Two days ago, a faster boat passed us when we were in front. Today, we had good pressure, played some shifts well, and that seemed to work in our favour.   “It's crucial to secure a decent lane at the start and then position yourself on the right side. In the first race today, unfortunately, we were on the wrong side, and we faced some challenges. However, in the last race, we made the right call, and upon tacking, we achieved a favourable angle and quickly moved ahead of the fleet. It's a bit like rolling the dice, and consistency pays off. We're pleased, especially considering we were almost late for the start today. We managed to get out there, and we used our light gear, which was a bit of a gamble, but it turned out okay. It was the first time we've used it.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

It's the first major championship for the Greek team and they are really enjoying the fleet and the competition.   Stavros Papagiannopoulos said, “ We truly appreciate the class and the races, and the race committee does an excellent job. The weather has been very pleasant, and today's conditions were particularly accommodating for us, resulting in a much better performance compared to previous days.   “In the second race, we fared quite well, relatively speaking. The initial part of the race was solid, and we managed the downwind section effectively. However, we encountered some challenges in the second part, leading to a bit of a setback and we ended up in 11th position.”

Aspire seizes lead on Day 2 of 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has taken the lead at the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after two more races on Tuesday, in very different conditions.   The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) drops to second and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) remains third.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Highlights from Day 2 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Louise Morton, possibly the first, but certainly the first women in a long time, to win a 5.5 Metre world championship race said,  “It was a fantastic day of racing. We had a clear plan going into it, but unfortunately, we got off to a rough start and had to cross a few boats on port after the initial start. However, we decided to head towards the right side of the course, where we found better wind pressure, and it paid off. We managed to secure a lead at the first mark and maintained it throughout the entire race. It was incredibly thrilling, even though I wasn't allowed to glance around much. I kept asking, "Are we still in the lead?" So overall, it was a great experience, and I'm thrilled with our performance. Winning a race in a world championship is a first for me, and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it.   “However, the second race didn't go as smoothly for us. We had a decent start and managed to reach the top mark in the vicinity of fifth place. Unfortunately, the wind became extremely light, and the waves were still quite substantial. We encountered some challenges, including hitting a mark, and this led to various mishaps. Several boats ended up passing us during this race. We're hoping that this race will be our discard, and we can bounce back in the upcoming races.”

Aspire  has taken the overall lead after four races. Kusznierewicz said, “ Sailing in Porto Cervo for the World Championship has certainly presented its challenges. We always have a plan for the first beat after the start, but here, you really have to sense what the wind will do. The conditions are made trickier by the significant waves, which persisted even when the wind was lighter today.    “The 5.5 boat is fantastic, and I absolutely love sailing it. However, it's crucial to work as a cohesive team; it can't be just one person's effort. I'm genuinely pleased with how Ed and Czemek (Przemysław) performed today.    “We operated as a unit, responding to the waves and the wind. Really good job for Louise and her team for winning the first race of the day, and I also want to commend Bernard Haissly from the  Caracole  team for their good performance.   “But we're mindful that this regatta is far from over; we're not even halfway through. Our focus must remain sharp. I've stressed to my team that it's going to be a long week. The weather forecast for the upcoming days suggests it won't be easy. We can expect varying wind conditions, sometimes even light winds. There are plenty of exceptional sailors here who are fully capable of winning races. So, we're staying focused, aiming to enjoy the experience, and in the end, we'll see where we stand.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

On  Ali Baba , five times (as helm) world champion Flavio Marazzi is sailing with his two daughters, Julie (15) and Eline (12). They are now in eighth overall after a 2,4 today, matching the score of  Aspire .   Julie explained,  “The 5.5 is an incredibly cool boat to sail and sailing with your family is always a fantastic experience. It allows us to spend quality time together and build a strong sense of trust and mutual respect. It's funny because when we were kids, we used to say, ‘Dad's a sailor,’ but we didn't fully grasp what that meant until we started sailing ourselves. We've developed a deep respect for his profession and what he does.   “Additionally, the location here is stunning, and sailing in Porto Cervo is a lot more enjoyable than back home in Switzerland at Thunersee. It's a bit wilder here with more waves and, usually, more wind. Although today's conditions weren't as windy as we'd hoped for, the first race was still amazing.”   In the Evolution fleet,  Criollo  (GER 30, Andreas Christiansen, Felix Christiansen, Moritz Christiansen) maintains her lead in 22nd, while the first Classic boat remains  Cibele  (ITA 72, Fabrizio Cavazza, Vittorio Zaoli, Duccio Colombi) in 24th. Racing in Porto Cervo continues Wednesday and runs through until Friday.   Results after 4 races 1  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) 10 2  The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) 19 3  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) 21 4  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) 25 5  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) 28 6  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) 29 7  Girls On Film  (GBR 41, Louise Morton, Andrew Mills, Sam Haines) 32 8  Ali Baba  (SUI 224, Flavio Marazzi, Julie Marazzi, Eline Marazzi) 34 9  Shaolin  (SUI 226, Philippe Dürr, Andreas Kindlimann, Hans Von Werdt) 36 10  Manly  (AUS 44, Marc Ryan, Dave Edwards, Marcus Burke) 38   Full results: https://www.yccs.it/regate-2023/international_55_metre_class__world_championship-3311/risultati-307/risultati_provvisori_dopo_r2   Many more photos in the gallery here::   https://www.flickr.com/photos/fivepointfivemetre/albums/72177720311474707

Guide to Porto Cervo

Where exceptional natural beauty meets world-class luxury and style.

Porto Cervo is a place that welcomes superyachts with open arms as one of the ultimate elite Mediterranean destinations. It is fully equipped for visitors, both ashore and on water, who can enjoy a smorgasbord of beaches, restaurants, events and shopping - all of world-class standards.

Situated along Sardinia’s north-eastern Emerald Coast is the Costa Smerelda’s glittering nominal capital of Porto Cervo. The marina is best known within the yachting industry as the host of renowned regattas such as the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, with the island’s spectacular coastline and ideal winds and waters providing the perfect conditions for competitive sailing. Despite its popularity, the 55km stretch of coastline has remained unspoilt thanks to it being acquired in 1961 by a consortium led by HH the Aga Khan in 1961 which has limited development while enhancing its many delights.

Khan knew that Costa Smerelda’s breathtaking natural beauty and fantastic cruising grounds made it an exceptional vacation spot for the international elite so he decided to add in modern comforts and facilities to accommodate the kind of crowd travelling with yachts, jets and helicopters. He also commissioned acclaimed Italian artist Luigi Vietti to design the village of Porto Cervo which still stands today as an idyllic white washed seaside town. This combination of scenic beauty and luxury style has long stood the test of time, each year welcoming charterers, sailors and celebrities to its shores.

During the high season the appeal of Porto Cervo can make it feel crowded, but if you enjoy the hustle and bustle amongst the rich and beautiful at the height of summer then take to the chic beach bars and enjoy. If you’re looking for a more relaxing Mediterranean charter vacation , embark later in the summer when the waters are still warm but you can explore the island in relative peace. A Porto Cervo yacht charter itinerary can include a number of Italy’s most beautiful areas, including the Maddalena Archipelago with its vast offering of glorious beaches and opportunities for water sports.

News New World Championship for September's Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

New world championship for september's maxi yacht rolex cup.

The 2024 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will feature the very first World Championship for Maxi 1 . Taking place out of Porto Cervo over 8-14 September as part of the main event, the "Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship" will be open to maxi yachts with an IRC TCC of 1.700-2.200 and up to 30.51m (100ft) in length. Typically it will include larger maxis, such as 100 footers (like Leopard 3)  and the former Wallycentos, down to the ClubSwan 80 My Song. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, is co-organised by the event’s host, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), and the International Maxi Association (IMA), the body responsible for overseeing and nurturing the sport of maxi racing and representing the interests of its maxi yacht owner members globally. While it had existed in this role for 30 years previous to this, in 2009 the IMA was formally recognised for these responsibilities by World Sailing. As a result, the IMA is permitted officially to hold two world championships each year. In 2010 the first Rolex Mini Maxi World Championship was held during the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and since then world championships have been held for the Maxi 72 and J Class under the auspices of the IMA, the latter taking place out of Newport, RI in 2017. “The International Maxi Association endeavours to adapt its world championships to wherever across the maxi fleet there is the greatest competition,” explains IMA Secretary General Andrew McIrvine. “Over recent seasons we have seen the 100 footers increasingly ramping up their programs with boats that were once cruiser-racers now becoming more thoroughbred racing yachts with all the development, sail programs and elite level crews that that entails. As a result we are expecting at least 10 Maxi 1 yachts to be competing at our new World Championship.”

yacht a porto cervo 2023

Despite entry to the event having not yet closed, the line-up for the Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship already looks impressive, including: the 100 footers Leopard 3; a trio of former Wallycentos - Magic Carpet Cubed, Galateia and V; SHK Scallywag - Seng Huang Lee's David Witt-led campaign returning to race in the northern hemisphere for the first time since the pandemic. Then there is the 93ft Bullitt, last year’s Rolex Middle Sea Race winner; the 85ft racer Deep Blue; the 82ft Django HF in her first race since receiving some major modifications; the ClubSwan 80 My Song; all eyes will be on the brand new 80ft Capricorno for which the Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship will be the first regatta in which she will race.

While yachts larger than 30.51m (100ft) compete in their own Super Maxi class, the IMA Maxi fleet today encompasses yachts of 18.29m (60ft) to 30.51m (100ft), as published annually in the IMA Maxi Class Rules.

In recent seasons the IMA has shed monickers from its classes such as Racer/Racer-Cruiser/Cruiser-Racer and Mini Maxi, in favour of dividing up the Maxi fleet solely by IRC rating. For example at the 2023 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Maxi 1 was for yachts with a TCC of 1.700< (ie 100 footers); Maxi 2 1.600-1.700 (ie the former Maxi 72s); Maxi 3 1.400-1.600 (the former Mini Maxi Racer-Cruiser class), Maxi  4 1.260-1.400 (the ex-Mini Maxi Cruiser-Racer class, but including a Swan 80 and a Southern Wind 82) and Maxi 5 <1.260 (the former Mini Maxi Cruiser class, ie Swan 65).

“The aim of this is entirely to encourage yachts of a similar performance to race against one another to ensure the best possible competition, rather than rely on any highly subjective terminology,” explains McIrvine.

Maxi yacht world championships have long been associated with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo. From the early 1980s the International Class A Yacht Association (ICAYA – the IMA’s previous name) regularly held here World Championships for the ‘Class A’ ; the name of the maxi class as defined by the IOR rule of that era. It is because of this that, to this day, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is still referred in sailing circles as ‘the Maxi Worlds’.

The last world championship held at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was for the Maxi 72 class in 2018 when it was won by Dieter Schön’s Momo. The world championship for this class was withdrawn due to dwindling numbers and the Maxi 72s increasingly racing out of class. Despite no longer racing within the confines of their box rule, the remaining former Maxi 72s continue to enjoy the best racing with four currently entered in September - Jethou, plus Jolt, Proteus and North Star, which will be competing in their own class in Porto Cervo in September.

From Now On), uno dall’India (Swan 58 Aquarius) cui si aggiunge l’armatrice egiziana del ClubSwan 36 Lady Ghada.

yacht a porto cervo 2023

Breaking news In evidenza Maxi Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Vela 17 Settembre 2024 Zerogradinord 0

Terzo posto per Northstar of London.

Beating the rain squalls at Rolex Swan Cup

Porto Cervo, 18 September 2024. Day two of the Rolex Swan Cup on the waters off Porto Cervo was marked by unstable weather conditions, managed skilfully by the Race Committee to fit in a coastal race for all classes, with the exception of the ClubSwan 36 class which completed a windward-leeward race, abandoning a second due to a squall that brought with it unpredictable and shifting winds. The coastal race was slightly shortened for Swan Divisions A and C and the One Design Classes for the same reason, while the course was reduced more significantly for Division B, the Swan Sparkman & Stephens yachts.

The forecast light winds of 6 to 10 knots from east-northeast rotating to east-southeast proved accurate, and at 1:30 p.m. CEST the Race Committee sent the fleet on a tactically interesting coastal course: after rounding an offset mark 1.5 miles from the course, followed by a reaching run to a second mark, the fleet headed downwind towards the Secca di Tre Monti shoal, with the option of either passing outside the tricky Passo delle Bisce or going through it. Leaving the Secca di Tre Monti mark to starboard, the Swans headed upwind to round the Isola dei Monaci islet and return to Porto Cervo. For the Swan Sparkman & Stevens class, the finish line was moved up to the Secca di Tre Monti shoal.

Winners of the today’s race were:

Maxi Grand Prix, Swan 82 Kallima- Randstad; Maxi Cruiser, Swan 90 Freya; Mini Maxi Grand Prix, Swan 60 Sea Quill; Mini Maxi Cruiser, Swan 65 Marlin II; S&S Racing, Swan 38 Mascalzone Latino; S&S Classic, Swan 36 Isabella; Swan Grand Prix, Swan 45 From Now On; Swan Cruiser, Swan 54 Katima.

The Swan 82 Kallima – Randstad Sailing Team, with Paul Cayard at the helm, Tommaso Chieffi on tactics, and trimmer Federico Michetti, sailed particularly well to place second in the Swan Maxi A division by just 16 seconds behind Freya, and claimed the win in the Grand Prix subclass. Equally well sailed was Andrea Fornaro’s 60 CR Sea Quill in the Swan Mini Maxi A’s, demonstrating excellent speed and cleanly executed manoeuvres. Sea Quill also hosted 17-year-old Maddalena Spanu on aboard, an athlete from the Young Azzurra sports programme run by the YCCS and reigning Wingfoil World Champion.

Francesco Mongelli, navigator on the Swan 90 Freya: “Today’s victory was down to the crew’s excellent manoeuvres, with perfect sail changes on a very well prepared boat. This helped us make up for some errors in strategy and we came first in compensated time again, which was not at all easy today with the rainstorms that made both the intensity and direction of the wind unstable.”

With today’s first place, the modified Argentinian Swan 45 From Now On remains firmly in the lead in the Grand Prix subclass of Swan Division C. In the Swan C Cruising subclass, the German Swan 54 Katima also clinched a second win to hold the lead, with the Swan 53CB Bedouin from Australia hot on their heels with two second place finishes.

In Division B S&S Classic the Swan 47 CB Matilda retains the lead in the provisional ranking thanks to a second place added to yesterday’s win. In Division B S&S Racing the provisional classification sees the German Swan 48 Elan hold onto the lead, just one point ahead of Mascalzone Latino.

There was a second victory for German boat Olymp in the ClubSwan class too, now boasting a comfortable lead in the provisional ranking. Second place of the day went to Vitamina, whose mainsail trimmer, Alberto Bolzan explained: “For Vitamina it was a good day, second place on a day with such unpredictable winds due to the squalls around the race course is no mean feat. The very light breeze was shifting all over the place, sticking close to the coast and skimming the rocks below Capo Ferro, which we know well, paid off. From tomorrow we’ll be back on windward-leeward courses and we’re determined to continue as we did today.”

With a clean run of three consecutive victories, the ClubSwan 42 Canopo extended their lead, while in the Swan 45 group Ulika tops the provisional ranking.

Black Seal retains the provisional lead In the ClubSwan 36 class, followed closely by winner of the day Fra Martina, just two points behind.

Once back ashore, crews were treated to the customary post-race refreshments along with a lively rock concert by the Swan Bandits – a band made up of Swan sailors – embodying the true camaraderie and friendly spirit that permeates the Rolex Swan Cup.

Racing continues tomorrow at 12 noon CEST with windward-leeward racing for the One Design Division – where the brand new ClubSwan 28 will make its debut. All other divisions will be set a coastal course.

Nautor Swan owners will gather tomorrow evening at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s restaurant for the Owner’s Dinner.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup : Versöhnlicher Abschluss vor Porto Cervo

Endlich perfekte Bedingungen beim Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

From Now On), uno dall'India (Swan 58 Aquarius) cui si aggiunge l'armatrice egiziana del ClubSwan 36 Lady Ghada.

Vitamina Cetilar in gara

Vitamina Cetilar in gara

Allerta in Emilia-Romagna, l’alluvione e l’emergenza maltempo in diretta: scuole chiuse e treni sospesi
